Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a complex anomaly characterized by developmental delay (ADNPM), craniofacial anomalies, and behavioral disorders. Among the anomalies highlight brachycephaly, short stature, sleep disturbance, behavior of self-injury and stereotyped movements. SMS is caused by an interstitial deletion of chromosome 17 (p11.2) or mutation in the retinoic acid-induced 1 (RAI1) gene, present in this chromosomal region. Its prevalence is estimated at 1:25.000 live births and may reach up to 1:15.000. The c1inical diagnosis for SMS is confirmed by molecular cytogenetic technique of FISH. In this work we performed a cytogenetic study by GTG, GTG high resolution and FISH total of 17 cases with c1inical suspicion for SMS.To perform FISH probes were used two commercial CYTOCELL ®, one containing the FLl1 gene and another gene RAI1. The c1inical results in this series compared to the literature showed that although we made some considerations, we demonstrate the similarity of the clinical diagnosis of SMS in both sub-del SMS and SMS-like Brazilians and literature. The cytogenetic results of GTG banding revealed that seven cases (7 1 17) have deletion 17(p11.2) and FISH confirmed the deletion of both the FLl1 gene and the gene RAI1 the seven cases identified. This work is of great importance for treating arare, little known and under-diagnosed in Brazil. Thus we emphasize that the use of medical records specific to SMS is important to define the diagnosis, 7 117 cases showed stable 17p11.2 deletion, and deletion of genes FUI and RAI, no significant differences between the c1inicalfeatures of this sample group comparing it with the literature and this is about the largest sample of Brazilian SMS already described

A Performer's Perspective on Double Clarinet Music: Pieces by William O. Smith, Eric Mandat, and Jody Rockmaker with Interviews and a Recording

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: This final research paper provides both a performer's perspective and a recording of double clarinet literature by William O. Smith (b. 1926), Eric Mandat (b. 1957), and Jody Rockmaker (b. 1961). The document includes musical examples, references to the recording, and interviews with the composers. The first chapter contains a brief literature review of sources on world double clarinets, biographies of the above-mentioned composers, and other pertinent information. Chapters 2-4 include the performer's perspective on the following works: Epitaphs for Double Clarinet by William O. Smith, Double Life for Solo Clarinet by Eric Mandat, and two compositions by Jody Rockmaker, Half and Half for demi-clarinet in A, and Double Dip. The final chapter examines how double clarinet music has evolved, the challenges and limitations of the repertoire, and the future of the double clarinet genre. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2013

Adam Smith's Circle of Ambition

Pearsall, Zakary 12 August 2016 (has links)
Adam Smith is often thought to be an unequivocal advocate of capitalism based on unfettered self-interest. Against this caricature, I argue that his attitudes towards commercial society are, in fact, more ambivalent. To ground this claim, I outline Smith’s account of ambition, a passion responsible for the dynamism of commercial economies but deleterious to individual happiness, and focus on the rhetoric Smith deploys in his portraits of three ambitious characters: the poor man’s son, the ambitious man, and the prudent man. Next, I challenge alternative interpretations. In particular, I contest Samuel Fleischacker’s view that Smith no longer sees ambition, motivated by vanity, as the driving force behind economic growth in commercial society by the time he writes the Wealth of Nations and, thus, is not meaningfully ambivalent. In the last section, I draw on recent work by Amelie Rorty to argue that Smith’s ambivalence towards commercial society is both appropriate and constructive.

Mechanisms Affecting Bench Press Throw Performance while Using a Counter-Balanced Smith Machine

Buddhadev, Harsh 05 1900 (has links)
The use of a counter-balance weight system of a Smith machine affects measures of bench press throw performance. Twenty-four men performed bench press throws at 30% of their one-repetition maximum under four different conditions: 1) counter-balance and rebound movement (RC), 2) no counter-balance and rebound movement (RNC), 3) counter-balance and concentric only movement (CC), and 4) no counter-balance and concentric only movement (CNC). Peak power, force, and concentric and eccentric velocities were measured using a linear accelerometer; and peak ground reaction force (GRF) was measured using a forceplate. Peak measures for concentric and eccentric velocities showed that NCB> CB and RBT > CBT. Peak GRF measures showed CB > NCB and RBT > CBT. The lower performance measures for CB were likely due to an increase in the net external load when the barbell accelerates faster than the gravitational constant causing the counter-balance weight becomes ineffective.

Flowage Differentiation in the Ultramafic Sills of the Cape Smith - Wakeham Bay Fold Belt, Ungava, P.Q.

Thompson, Danny 04 1900 (has links)

intrusive Ultramafic sill of the Cape Smith-Wakeham Bay Fold Belt, located in the Ungava Peninsula P.Q., was studied. Measurements of olivine crystals were made on enlarged images of thin sections to determine the average olivine grain size and volume across the intrusion.

The Bravo ultramafic sills exhibit a peculiar petrographic and chemical zoning, the rocks becoming increasingly rich in olivine as one moves toward the centre of the intrusion. Rock Compositions range from gabbro at the margin to olivine rich peridotite near the centre. The olivine grain size distribution exhibits n similar zoning, the grain size increasing toward the centre. However, the maximum value is skewed somewhat to the south along the edge of the central olivine rich zone, coinciding with the maximum value of Ns (Nickel in sulfides).

The zoning is a consequence of flowage differentiation. Along the margins of the intrusion grain dispersive pressure (the pressure due to mechanical interaction between phenocrysts is dominant and grains are forced toward the centre. Within the centre of the intrusion, where the increased crystal concentration results in plug flow, the force of gravity is dominant and the largest grains make their way to the base of the plug.

The Bravo Ultramafic Sills are pre-tectonic in origin being intruded into a group of eugeosynclinal strata in a sub-horizontal attitude.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Study on difference and analogy of Smithian and Marxian ideas on work, as the wealth of the society

Saiyar, Aydin January 2009 (has links)
This paper reflects and explores the grand narrative on work set by Adam Smith and Karl Marx during the early and later modernity. It tires to push forward the idea that Marx and Smith are one of the major influencers to the contemporary notion on work. It also tries to show the major differences and similarities between these two authors. Moreover, this paper seeks to point out the failures of idealism on work and tries to put forward critics of contemporary society. Maybe in this conduct idealism could be overcome in future and the world could be built on material, actual, needs, not on ideology.

Exploiting Multigrain Parallelism in Pairwise Sequence Search on Emergent CMP Architectures

Aji, Ashwin Mandayam 25 August 2008 (has links)
With the emerging hybrid multi-core and many-core compute platforms delivering unprecedented high performance within a single chip, and making rapid strides toward the commodity processor market, they are widely expected to replace the multi-core processors in the existing High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructures, such as large scale clusters, grids and supercomputers. On the other hand in the realm of bioinformatics, the size of genomic databases is doubling every 12 months, and hence the need for novel approaches to parallelize sequence search algorithms has become increasingly important. This thesis puts a significant step forward in bridging the gap between software and hardware by presenting an efficient and scalable model to accelerate one of the popular sequence alignment algorithms by exploiting multigrain parallelism that is exposed by the emerging multiprocessor architectures. Specifically, we parallelize a dynamic programming algorithm called Smith-Waterman both within and across multiple Cell Broadband Engines and within an nVIDIA GeForce General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU). Cell Broadband Engine: We parallelize the Smith-Waterman algorithm within a Cell node by performing a blocked data decomposition of the dynamic programming matrix followed by pipelined execution of the blocks across the synergistic processing elements (SPEs) of the Cell. We also introduce novel optimization methods that completely utilize the vector processing power of the SPE. As a result, we achieve near-linear scalability or near-constant efficiency for up to 16 SPEs on the dual-Cell QS20 blades, and our design is highly scalable to more cores, if available. We further extend this design to accelerate the Smith-Waterman algorithm across nodes on both the IBM QS20 and the PlayStation3 Cell cluster platforms and achieve a maximum speedup of 44, when compared to the execution times on a single Cell node. We then introduce an analytical model to accurately estimate the execution times of parallel sequence alignments and wavefront algorithms in general on the Cell cluster platforms. Lastly, we contribute and evaluate TOSS -- a Throughput-Oriented Sequence Scheduler, which leverages the performance prediction model and dynamically partitions the available processing elements to simultaneously align multiple sequences. This scheme succeeds in aligning more sequences per unit time with an improvement of 33.5% over the naive first-come, first-serve (FCFS) scheduler. nVIDIA GPGPU: We parallelize the Smith-Waterman algorithm on the GPGPU by optimizing the code in stages, which include optimal data layout strategies, coalesced memory accesses and blocked data decomposition techniques. Results show that our methods provide a maximum speedup of 3.6 on the nVIDIA GPGPU when compared to the performance of the naive implementation of Smith-Waterman. / Master of Science

Progresso e ordem na obra de Adam Smith / Progress and order in Adam Smiths work

Marchevsky, Julia Fleider 04 October 2018 (has links)
The work of Adam Smith is an expression of a new conception of progress elaborated mainly during the second half of the eighteenth century. Society\'s development comes to be understood as an effect of the interaction between individuals and of the expression of human faculties and dispositions. We examine how this new perspective appears in Smith\'s studies on different topics, such as the production of wealth, language and science, showing how the relationship between those spheres of society is characterized by an interdependence within a system. In analyzing how Smith addresses distinctive themes, we highlight an important common aspect among the author\'s different texts: the notion of order. The demand for it appears as a stimulus for the transformations of society. It also corresponds to the method of investigation used by Smith: the creation of explanatory systems based on the regularities among the most different societies. This model enables, for example, the formulation of the four-stage theory of development. It also ends up in a new way of producing history: instead of narrating the events of particular groups, one searches for the regularities between them to construct the history of the species. In short, this dissertation interprets how the ideas of progress and order in Adam Smith\'s work are strongly interconnected.
