Survey on the management of Alveolar Osteitis ( Dry Sockets) in South AfricaNokaneng, Emmy Ngoakoana January 2009 (has links)
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium (MChD) / Exodontia remains one of the most regularly done procedures in dentistry in South Africa (SA) and alveolar osteitis (AO) is considered one of the most common complications associated with exodontia. Despite the extensive research done on this clinical entity, the management of AO still remains controversial. Various management protocols have been suggested in the literature, varying from prophylactic to symptomatic management of AO (Blum,2002). However, none of these management protocols have to date shown any conclusive
evidence on the effectiveness and benefit over another protocol. The author was of the opinion that general dental practitioners (GDPs) in South Africa generally use preventative and treatment protocols based on what they were taught at their alumni dental schools or use protocols modified from their own clinical experience in practice. The aim of this study was to assess which treatment protocols are routinely used by GDPs in South Africa for the management of AO and suggest a scientifically sound treatment protocol for AO. The study was done in the form of a questionnaire and the participants were randomly selected from the Health Professions Council's register. The results showed that most of the GDPs in South Africa continued to use the same treatment protocol as their alumni dental school. They were of the opinion that these protocols were still clinically the most effective. Despite the plethora of intra-alveolar medicaments available, Alvogyl®still remains the medicament of choice of GDPs. As there is no evidence in the scientific literature that suggests that one intra-alveolar
medicament or antibiotic is more effective than the other, the author does not encourage the use of the medicaments or antibiotics in the treatment of AO. However, by following simple measures such as improving patients' oral hygiene and using a pre-operative 0.2% chlorhexidine mouth rinse, the incidence of AO can be reduced significantly.

Wireless Sensor System for Monitoring Sportsmen Exposed to Hazardous ConcussionsIdrisoglu, Alper January 2019 (has links)
Sport-related Traumatic Brain injuries (TBI) are a major problem in ice hockey. Reports show that it occurs 160 concussion per 1000 hours of play time and 4.6% of head injuries leads to a concussion in Sweden. A system that can monitor the players in real time and indicate an impact can contribute to better understanding the biomechanical etiology of a concussion. Purpose of this project is to test the ability of a wireless sensor network for monitoring the g-Forces that affect the head of the ice hockey players in real-time. We build a wireless sensor network system called g-Force Monitoring System (GFMS) by implementing a Web Socket connection between the sensor nodes and the server. The sensor measures and transmits the data over the Web Socket protocol to the server and the server registers and allows monitoring of the g-Force values in real-time. We achieved a 6 ms sampling rate by using the g-Force Monitoring System. The system was able to operate during one hour play time without any significant problem. The stored data shows that the GFMS has an ability to indicate impact and its duration over a predefined threshold. The user of the system can monitor the g-Force data in real time or can do analyzes on stored values. The GFMS can deliver valuable indications. If the system can come to existence and be implemented into the ice hockey helmets, by letting medical experts to look at and analyze the g-Force data, it can decrease the diagnosis and recovery time of a concussion. It can help to make the Ice hockey arena to a safer place without having to change the rhythm of the game.

Estudo histomorfométrico e microtomográfico em cães / The effect of aPDT on the decontamination of infected alveoli prior to immediate implantation and on post extraction socket healing with or without xenogeneic graft. A histomorphometric and microcomputed tomographic study in dogsMandetta, Carolina de Moraes Rego 17 March 2017 (has links)
Alveolar bone resorption following tooth loss is an inherent condition of the natural healing process. Therefore, several techniques, such as immediate implants placement and post extraction socket preservation, have been suggested in order to limit the adverse changes suffered by the alveolar process. However, extraction sockets commonly results from the removal of teeth affected by chronic infection, which conventionally contraindicates immediate bone graft and implant placement unless meticulous wound debridement and alveolar irrigation associated to a suitable pre- and post-operatory antibiotic protocol are employed. Alternatives ought to be tested in order to substitute the indiscriminate use of systemic antibiotic therapy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in the decontamination of infected post extraction sockets, previously to immediate implant placement and in the healing of post extraction sockets associated or not to xenografts. In the first phase, periodontitis was induced with ligatures in the mandibular premolars of eight beagle dogs. After 2 months, in the second phase of the study the dogs had their mandibular bicuspids bilaterally extracted, and randomly one hemi-mandible was decontaminated by mechanic debridement associated to saline solution irrigation (Control Group - CG), and the other hemi-mandible was decontaminated with mechanic debridement and saline solution irrigation associated to antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (Test Group - TG). Thereafter, 3 immediate implants in each side of the mandible were placed and the following groups were devised: TG-I (Test Group - Implant) and CG-I (Control Group - Implant). The remaining sockets were used for the study of the healing dynamic. The sockets were randomly assigned to the following groups: Test Group - Blood clot (TG-BC), Test Group Bio- Oss® (TG-BO), TG - BOC (Test Group Bio-Oss® Collagen), Control Group - Blood Clot (CG-BC), Control Group - Bio-Oss® (CG-BO) and Control Group - Bio-Oss® Collagen (CG-BOC). After 12 weeks, the dogs were sacrificed and the specimens were processed for microtomographic, histological and histomorphometric analysis. When the post extraction healing process was evaluated, the aPDT decontaminated sockets (TG-BC, TG-BO and TG-BOC) presented better numerical results in comparison to both buccal bone crest height (BCL) and in the bucco-lingual dimension (BLD). However, there were no statistically differences among the groups for these parameters in the histomorphometric analysis. Only the BCL measured in the two-dimensional microtomographic analysis showed statistic better results in the TG-BC when compared to the CG-BC. In the evaluation of the immediate implant placement the histomorphometric analysis presented statistically better results for the TG-I in the bone-implant contact (BIC), as well as in the vertical buccal bone loss (VBBL). The bone density (BD) was numerically better in the TG-I than in the CG-I. Both two-dimensional (VBBL) and three-dimensional (bone volume BV, percentage of the total bone volume - BV/TV, bone surface density - BS/TV, trabecular thickness Tb.Th, trabecular separation Tb.Sp and trabecular number TB.N) microtomographic analysis showed statistically better results in the TG-I. The aPDT showed potential in the decontamination of infected post extraction sockets previously to immediate implant placement and in the healing of post extraction sockets associated or not to xenogeneic grafts, without the use of systemic antibiotics.

Estudo de cálice de fundação com ênfase nos esforços nas paredes transversais do colarinho / Study of the socket base foundation with emphasis on the efforts of transverse wallsNunes, Vinicius César Pereira 08 May 2009 (has links)
This research presents an analysis of socket base connections of precast concrete structures, with emphasis on the e orts of transverse walls. In the experimental program were tested two prototypes subjected to bending with great eccentricity: one with smooth interface, and other with rough interface through shear keys. It adopted a different detail for main vertical reiforcement, concentrating them around the corner, and was adopted for the socket, a thickness less than that recommended by the technical literature. Based on experimental results were performed the analysis of the strenght of prototypes, the deformations of the reinforcement, and the deflection of the walls. It was performed an analysis of experimental results with a design model of the technical literature regarding to the forces resulting in main vertical and horizontal reinforcement located on the transverse walls of socket, considering two different situations of behavior to transverse walls: bending-tension and tension. Analyzing the results, it was verified that the vertical reinforcement located near the corners effectively contributed to the strength of the prototype with smooth interface. It has been proved that the walls were subjected to a bending tension and that the theoretical model applied with 15% of bending and 85% of tension gives the best results, when compared with the values obtained experimentally.

Análise de blocos de concreto armado sobre duas estacas com cálice totalmente embutido mediante presença de viga de travamento / Analysis of two pile caps reinforced concrete with embedded socket by presence of locking beamBarros, Rodrigo 22 May 2009 (has links)
The present research studies the behavior of two pile caps reinforced concrete with embedded socked used in connections of pre-cast concrete structures. It was particularly evaluated the effect provoked by the locking beam on the pile-caps when supported by the socket lateral walls. Three-dimensional numerical analyses using software based on finite element method (FEM) were developed considering the nonlinear physical behavior of the material. To evaluate the adopted software, a comparative analysis was made using numerical and experimental results obtained from other software. In the pile caps studied, it was noticed a variation in the wall thickness, socket interface, strut angle inclination and action on beam. The results show that the presence of beam does not change significantly the pile caps behavior and that the socket wall is able to transfer effectively the force from the beam to the pile caps. By the tensions on the bars of longitudinal reinforcement, it was possible to obtain the force on the tie and the strut angle inclination before the collapse of models. It was found that the angles present more inclinations than those used in the design, which was made based on strut and tie model.

Análise da base de pilares pré-moldados na ligação com cálice de fundação / Analysis of the precast concrete column base in the connection socketEbeling, Eimair Bottega 22 May 2006 (has links)
The study presents the analysis of precast concrete column base in the connection socket. This research follows previous studies on this connection type. The research aim to fill out the lack of information about column base in the embedded length, because almost do not exist recommendations about this subject. An experimental investigation was developed with the construction of two models, which connection sockets were reused from previous researches. The models have smooth contact interface with different embedded lengths and the axial load with great eccentricity was applied in the models. Numeric simulations are presented by using the Finite Element Method adopting non-linear physical, geometric, and contact. A comparative analysis was done between the tests and numeric models that were observed the displacements, longitudinal and transversal reinforcement strain, cracking, and stress flow. The results show that the ruin of the models occurred for large strain in longitudinal tensioned reinforcement located out of embedded length. The transversal reinforcement presents little strain. Recommendations are made for anchorage of longitudinal reinforcement and at the end of the research an analytical model for column base behavior is suggested for connecting foundation by socket
