Laboratory measurements of sound speed and attenuation of water-saturated granular sediments

Argo, Theodore F., 1982- 13 July 2012 (has links)
The propagation of acoustic waves through water-saturated granular sediments has been widely studied, yet existing propagation models can not adequately predict the speed and attenuation of sound across the range of frequencies of interest in underwater acoustics, especially in loosely packed sediments that have been recently disturbed by storms or wave action. Advances in modeling are currently dependent on experimental validation of various components of existing models. To begin to address these deficiencies, three well-controlled laboratory experiments were performed in gravity-settled glass beads and reconstituted sand sediments. Sound speed and attenuation measurements in the 0.5 kHz to 10 kHz range are scarce in the literature, so a resonator method was used to investigate a reconstituted sand sediment in this range. The literature contains laboratory and in situ measurements of sound speed and attenuation at higher frequencies, but existing models can not predict both the speed of sound and attenuation simultaneously in some sediments. A time-of-flight technique was used to determine the speed of sound and attenuation in monodisperse water-saturated glass beads, binary glass bead mixtures, and reconstituted sediment samples in the frequency range 200 kHz to 900 kHz to investigate the effect of sediment inhomogeneity. The effect of porosity, independent of changes in other sediment physical properties, has not been demonstrated in the experimental literature. Therefore, a fluidized bed technique was used to independently vary the porosity of monodisperse glass bead samples from 0.37 to 0.43 and a Fourier phase technique was used to determine the speed and attenuation of sound. Collecting these results together, measured sound speeds showed positive dispersion below 50 kHz while negative dispersion was observed above 200 kHz for some samples. Attenuation measurements showed an approximately f⁰̇⁵ dependence in the low frequency regime and an approximately f³̇⁵ dependence for large-grained samples in the high frequency regime. The laboratory experiments presented in this work demonstrate that both sound speed and attenuation in idealized loosely packed water-saturated sediments can not be simultaneously predicted by existing models within the uncertainties of the model input parameters, but the independent effect of porosity on sound speed can be predicted. / text

Utfackningsväggar och trafikbuller - En förtätning av Albyberget / Infill walls and traffic noise - A densification of Albyberget

Granqvist, Andreas, Hall, Jonas January 2017 (has links)
One problem that has arisen is to find an infill wall that meets the requirements for noise and U-value, which at the same time is economically justifiable. The authors, on behalf of AUCTORITAS Projektstyrning AB, have examined 10 different infill walls with regard to noise reduction, U-value and price. The purpose of the work was to investigate the technical properties of the infill walls. The question that was addressed was the following: How does different materials affect the sound attenuation? Which infill walls can handle the noise requirements of a new construction on Albyberget? Can the problem be solved solely with the walls or does it require further action? Is it economically justifiable to choose a thicker wall with regard to u value instead of maximizing the living space? In order to answer these questions, the authors have carried out laboratory work, literature studies and also taken part in a reference object, acoustics reports, energy calculation reports and costing books/offers. An interview with a person with knowledge in the area of noise/acoustics have been completed and used as a complementary basis. The results led to a recommendation of a standard timber frame wall with a thickness of 395 mm, that met all of the project requirements and with a cost of 1 391 kr/m2 to be used in the buildings at Albyberget.

Acoustic characterisation of ultrasound contrast agents at high frequency

Sun, Chao January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate the acoustic properties of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) at high ultrasound frequencies. In recent years, there has been increasing development in the use of high frequency ultrasound in the fields of preclinical, intravascular, ophthalmology and superficial tissue imaging. Although research studying the acoustic response of UCAs at low diagnostic ultrasonic frequencies has been well documented, quantitative information on the acoustical properties of UCAs at high ultrasonic frequencies is limited. In this thesis, acoustical characterisation of three UCAs was performed using a preclinical ultrasound scanner (Vevo 770, VisualSonics Inc., Canada). Initially the acoustical characterisation of five high frequency transducers was measured using a membrane hydrophone with an active element of 0.2 mm in diameter to quantify the transmitting frequencies, pressures and spatial beam profiles of each of the transducers. Using these transducers and development of appropriate software, high frequency acoustical characterisation (speed and attenuation) of an agar-based tissue mimicking material (TMM) was performed using a broadband substitution technique. The results from this study showed that the acoustical attenuation of TMM varied nonlinearly with frequency and the speed of sound was approximately constant 1548m·s-1 in the frequency range 12-47MHz. The acoustical properties of three commercially available lipid encapsulated UCAs including two clinical UCAs Definity (Lantheus Medical Imaging, USA) and SonoVue (Bracco, Italy) and one preclinical UCAs MicroMarker (untargeted) (VisualSonics, Canada) were studied using the software and techniques developed for TMM characterisation. Attenuation, contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR) and subharmonic to fundamental ratio were measured at low acoustic pressures. The results showed that large off-resonance and resonant MBs predominantly contributed to the fundamental response and MBs which resonated at half of the driven frequency predominantly contributed to subharmonic response. The effect of needle gauge, temperature and injection rate on the size distribution and acoustic properties of Definity and SonoVue was measured and was found to have significant impacts. Acoustic characterisations of both TMM and UCAs in this thesis extend our understanding from low frequency to high frequency ultrasound and will enable the further development of ultrasound imaging techniques and UCAs design specifically for high frequency ultrasound applications.

The ASSR test is an electrophysiological examination that uses electrodes to capture the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and the brainstem without depending on the individual's response, thus eliminating the subjectivity of personal factors such as attention, response time, hearing ability, etc. This paper presents the results of a ten test which evaluated the hearing threshold of individuals, by first stimulating the hearing system without a protector and subsequently with a hearing protector. The results of this study were lower than those expressed in the Certificate of Approval: to plug a gap of 10.3 dB and dB the ear mufflers. The repetition of tests found a good repeatability with a difference between zero and 5 dB for 75% of the frequencies tested. / Mestre

Ljudreducering av värmepump

Runesson, Sven, Knutsson, Hugo, Johansson, Steve January 2008 (has links)
This degree project handles acoustic measurements of the heat pump EcoAir 107, made by Enertech CTC AB. The sound from the three sound sources of the heat pump, fan, compressor and four way valve, have been measured to find out how they affect the total sound level of the product. Measures to attenuate the sound level have been developed and tested. By comparing these with the sound of the heat pump, in its original state, we have found out the measures which have best effects. The best attenuating measures came to be: taped openings and holes around the compressor space, isolating the top and the bottom of the whole construction, support of the fan bottom part and shielding of the sound source with a screen at a distance of 110 mm These measures have been tested together and an average attenuation of the total sound level with 3,9 dB have been accomplished. In the front of the fan where the continuous sound is the strongest, the attenuation was 4,7 dB. This project is meant to be used as a guide by Enertech CTC AB:s during their future developing process.

Schallspektroskopische Charakterisierung von submikronen Emulsionen / Charakterystyka koloidalnych emulsji dzwiekowa spektroskopia / Characterization of Submicron Emulsions by Ultrasonic Spectroscopy

Babick, Frank 08 March 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The ultrasonic spectroscopy is one of few measurement methods applicable to the online characterization of disperse systems with regard to particle size distribution. However, its application in industrial practise is restricted to a rather low number of measurement tasks and material systems. In particular it is hardly used for the particle size analysis of submicron emulsions. This thesis therefore aims to the evaluation of the ultrasonic spectroscopy regarding its applicability to the online characterization of submicron emulsions. Main issues of the thesis are the modelling of sound attenuation in dense particle systems, the estimation on the influence that surfactant layers exert on sound attenuation, the resolution at which size distribution can be measured, the sensitivity of calculated size distributions to model parameters (particle concentration and material properties) and the analysis of measured attenuation spectra by unknown model parameters. The meanining of these issues are illustrated for typical characterization tasks.

Use of mode coupling to enhance sound attenuation in acoustic ducts : effects of exceptional point / Utilisation de couplage de modes pour l'amplification de l'atténuation du son dans les conduits acoustiques : effets du point exceptionnel

Xiong, Lei 24 March 2016 (has links)
Two strategies are presented to use the mode coupling effects to enhance sound attenuation in acoustic ducts. The strategy is to couple the incoming propagative mode with the localized mode, which is also called Fano resonance. This strategy is presented and validated in a duct-cavity system and a waveguide partially lined with a locally reacting material. The R-matrix method is introduced to solve the propagation problems. A zero in the transmission is present, due to the excitation of a trapped mode which is formed by the interferences of two neighboured modes. It is also linked to the avoided crossing of the eigenvalues and exceptional point. In the second strategy, a set of periodic rigid inclusions are embedded in a porous lining to enhance sound attenuation at low frequencies. The mode coupling is due to the presence of the embedded inclusions. Floquet - Bloch theorem is proposed to investigate the attenuation in a 2D periodic waveguide. Crossing is observed between the mode attenuations of two Bloch waves. The most important and interesting figure is that near the frequency where the crossing appears, an attenuation peak is observed. This phenomenon can be used to explain the transmission loss peak observed numerically and experimentally in a 3D waveguide partially lined by a porous material embedded with periodic inclusions. Finally, the acoustical behaviours of a purely reacting liner in a duct in absence and presence of flow are investigated. The results exhibit an unusual acoustical behaviour : for a certain range of frequencies, no wave can propagate against the flow. a negative group velocity is found, and it is demonstrated that the sound can be slowed down and even stopped.
