The effects of on-site sewage treatment and disposal systems on the relief canals of Indian River County, the St. Sebastian River, and the central Indian River lagoon

Unknown Date (has links)
Effluent from on-site sewage treatment and disposal systems (OSTDS) is generally known to impact groundwaters and surface waters with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and other contaminants. Little research has quantified this problem along the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), especially in Indian River County (IRC) where there are 26,660 active systems. This study assessed the effects of OSTDS on contamination of surface and groundwaters along three urbanized canals and the St. Sebastian River in IRC, all of which flow into the Central IRL. Multiple lines of evidence were used to define the source of the nutrient loadings including the novel approach of using the artificial sweetener, sucralose, as an indicator of human sewage impact. Results indicate that areas with high densities of OSTDS are contributing N to surface waters and elevating N:P ratios through submarine groundwater discharge and promoting eutrophication in the Central IRL. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Samet, Ahmed 08 December 2017 (has links)
The identification of inputs forces acting on structures and the detection of defects from operating measurement have been important topics in both academic and industrial projects. The choice of the used tool or method depends on the frequency band of study since there are appropriate approaches for each frequency domain. An energetic method so called the simplified energy method (MES) is used to predict the distribution of the vibro-acoustic energy density in the medium and high frequency band. The objective of this thesis is to extend this energy method to solve inverse vibro-acoustic problems and to identify the sources of vibrations on one hand and to detect the defects on the other hand. The inverse MES formulation (IMES) is numerically validated for continuous coupling-based systems such as the case of a system composed with several coupled plates and the case of a system composed of an acoustic cavity coupled with a plate. In addition, a new numerical methodology is proposed to extend this IMES identification tool for the detection of defects. A parametric analysis is performed in the case of plate with defects in order to test the robustness and the efficiency of this approach. Finally, an experimental study is carried out to validate the IMES technique to identify and locate the input loads for several scenarios, and detecting the defects.

In engineering computational modeling plays an important role in product design and development techniques for noise attenuation. In such context, this thesis investigates the acoustic intensity generated by sound radiation from vibrating surfaces. Specifically, the research focuses on the identification that effectively contribute to the radiated sound power into the far-field, especially when the driven frequency occurs below the critical coincidence frequency. The theoretical formulations of two different approaches are described. The first one, called supersonic intensity (analytical) is calculated via Fourier transforms for noise sources with separable geometries. The second, called useful intensity (numerical) is calculated by the method of boundary elements to classic fonts with arbitrary geometries. In both, the identification of regions is done by filtering the non propagating waves (evanescent). The work is focused on the presentation, implementation and analysis of a new numerical technique for calculating the magnitude useful intensity. This technique is a variant of the method-boundary element (BEM), based on the fact that the approximations for the acoustic pressure and normal speed variables are taken as constant in each element. Also in particular way to obtain constant speed by mean of a number of speeds interior of each element. For this reason, the technique is called the Average Velocity Boundary Element Method . The closed form solution of the normal velocity field for rectangular plates in eight cases with distinct combinations of classical boundary conditions is also obtained. Then, the supersonic intensity is estimated and compared to the acoustic intensity. Numerical experiments are performed comparing to the useful intensity via the conventional BEM with theAVBEM in order to illustrate the positive computational features of the method. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method is much more computationally effcient than its standard BEM counterpart, it enabling the use of a coarser mesh.

Quasi real-time model for security of water distribution network / Modèle quasi-temps réel pour la sécurité des réseaux d’alimentation en eau potable

Ung, Hervé 05 February 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to model the propagation of a contaminant inside a water distribution network equipped with real time sensors. There are three research directions: the solving of the transport equations, the source identification and the sensor placement. Classical model for transport of a chemical product in a water distribution network isusing 1D-advection-reaction equations with the hypothesis of perfect mixing at junctions. It isproposed to improve the predictions by adding a model of imperfect mixing at double T-junctions and by considering dispersion effect in pipes which takes into account a 3-D velocity profile. The first enhancement is created with the help of a design of experiment based on the Delaunay triangulation, CFD simulations and the interpolation method Kriging. The second one uses the adjoint formulation of the transport equations applied with an algorithm of particle backtracking and a random walk, which models the radial diffusion in the cross-section of a pipe. The source identification problem consists in finding the contamination origin, itsinjection time and its duration from positive and negative responses given by the sensors. The solution to this inverse problem is computed by solving the adjoint transport equations with a backtracking formulation. The method gives a list of potential sources and the ranking of thosemore likely to be the real sources of contamination. It is function of how much, in percentage, they can explain the positive responses of the sensors. The sensor placement is chosen in order to maximize the ranking of the real source of contamination among the potential sources. Two solutions are proposed. The first one uses agreedy algorithm combined with a Monte Carlo method. The second one uses a local search method on graphs. Finally the methods are applied to a real test case in the following order: the sensor placement, the source identification and the estimation of the contamination propagation.

Information-Theoretic Framework for Network Anomaly Detection: Enabling online application of statistical learning models to high-speed traffic / ITF-NAD : Ett informationsteoretiskt ramverk för realtidsdetektering av nätverksanomalier

Damour, Gabriel January 2019 (has links)
With the current proliferation of cyber attacks, safeguarding internet facing assets from network intrusions, is becoming a vital task in our increasingly digitalised economies. Although recent successes of machine learning (ML) models bode the dawn of a new generation of intrusion detection systems (IDS); current solutions struggle to implement these in an efficient manner, leaving many IDSs to rely on rule-based techniques. In this paper we begin by reviewing the different approaches to feature construction and attack source identification employed in such applications. We refer to these steps as the framework within which models are implemented, and use it as a prism through which we can identify the challenges different solutions face, when applied in modern network traffic conditions. Specifically, we discuss how the most popular framework -- the so called flow-based approach -- suffers from significant overhead being introduced by its resource heavy pre-processing step. To address these issues, we propose the Information Theoretic Framework for Network Anomaly Detection (ITF-NAD); whose purpose is to facilitate online application of statistical learning models onto high-speed network links, as well as provide a method of identifying the sources of traffic anomalies. Its development was inspired by previous work on information theoretic-based anomaly and outlier detection, and employs modern techniques of entropy estimation over data streams. Furthermore, a case study of the framework's detection performance over 5 different types of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks is undertaken, in order to illustrate its potential use for intrusion detection and mitigation. The case study resulted in state-of-the-art performance for time-anomaly detection of single source as well as distributed attacks, and show promising results regarding its ability to identify underlying sources.

Hydrocarbons present in the environment consist of complex mixtures of compounds derived from multiple sources. The main contribution lies on fossil fuel inputs due to the rate and spatial scale by which petroleum has been used as an energy source and chemical feedstock. The aim of this study was to assess the concentration levels and identify sources of hydrocarbons in the Upper Iguaçu Watershed and, in particular, in the area of influence of the President Getulio Vargas Refinery (REPAR). In addition to the factors of chronic pollution, the study area was the scenario of an acute accidental oil spill in July 2000. Numerous indicators in different environmental compartments (surface water, sediment, soil and groundwater) were assessed in the post spill phase and during the environmental monitoring programs over the course of several campaigns for more than a decade. Assessment efforts were concentrated on the following indicators: n-alkanes, alkanes isoprenoids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), petroleum biomarkers and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). The results identified as the main contribution of organic matter to surface waters of the Barigüi and Iguaçu Rivers the materials flows originated in the region upstream of the accident, reflecting chronic anthropogenic contribution of the city of Curitiba. In 2007 and 2008, the TPH and PAH concentrations in surface waters and sediments of the Barigüi and Iguaçu Rivers revealed a significant improvement in the conditions of these rivers when compared with 2000. Inside the refinery area (Point Zero), it was observed a clear natural decrease (attenuation) of the concentrations of TPH in the soil at all depths sampled over time in Marshes 1 and 4 and, in particular, an important decrease of concentrations between 2004 and 2007. Diagnostic ratios and chemometrics were used to identity hydrocarbon sources. The diagnostic ratios calculated from the concentrations of PAH suggested that, in the majority of sediments from the Barigüi and Iguaçu Rivers collected in 2000 and 2001 campaigns, the main source is petrogenic. Only in the station upstream the accident in the Barigüi River, the pyrolytic source predominated in these two campaigns. The diagnostic ratios that presented higher efficiency in identifying sources of hydrocarbons in sediments of the Barigüi and Iguaçu Rivers were: ΣC1- Phenantrenes/Phenanthrene; and (Σ3-6 rings parental PAH)/(Σ5 alkylated PAH series). The source identification through diagnostic ratios calculated from heights and areas of chromatographic peaks demonstrated its applicability establishing a relationship between the compounds found in soil samples of the internal area of the refinery and the sample of the oil spilled in the accident, after nearly a decade of occurrence of the spillage. The source identification through chemometric method based on principal components analysis (PCA) of preprocessed and combined sections of Selected Ion Chromatograms (SIC) showed that the most contaminated samples are inside the refinery area. These samples present a petrogenic pattern and different weathering degrees. Samples from outside the refinery area (Guajuvira, General Lúcio e Balsa Nova) are either less or not contaminated, and/or contain mixtures of diagenetic, pyrogenic and petrogenic inputs where different proportions predominate. The locations farthest away from industrial activity (Balsa Nova) contain, as expected, the lowest levels of PAH contamination. The biomarkers results do not show any evidences to conclude positive matches between the samples from outside the refinery area and the spilled Cusiana oil. The results along Barigüi and Iguaçu rivers and Point Zero demonstrated that emergency actions to contain the oil were appropriate for the rivers, and that the contamination resulting from the spill was mostly contained in the Point Zero and decreased significantly after one decade
