Supporting re-sourcing decisions : the case of maintenance in Uganda's downstream oil industryNabuuma, Betty January 2010 (has links)
A re-sourcing decision is a sourcing decision subsequent to an outsourcing arrangement. Effective management of re-sourcing decisions is vital in ensuring the stability and continuity of organisational operations supported by outsourced critical activities. However, despite the importance of this stage in the outsourcing cycle, most outsourcing research has focused on outsourcing determinants and outsourcing process control stages. The study reported in this thesis set out to explore maintenance re-sourcing decisions in an asset-intensive service organisation operating in a capital constrained economy. The objectives of the study were to determine the factors that influence the management of maintenance re-sourcing decisions in asset intensive service organisations and to propose a management model for guiding maintenance re-sourcing decision making processes in such organisations. In order to achieve these objectives, a qualitative style oriented in-depth case study was adopted. Results from a thematic data analysis revealed that the management of re-sourcing decisions is impacted by factors that fall into three categories: the purchasing organisation s structural elements, external structural elements and boundary spanning elements. However, of the three categories, boundary spanning elements were found to have a greater bearing on the effectiveness of the most critical stages, incumbent supplier performance evaluation and incumbent to alternative supplier comparison. In addition to the recognised role that outsourcing models play in guiding sourcing decisions, this study has revealed the importance of three more key enablers. These include: recruiting qualified and experienced individuals into boundary spanning roles, developing and maintaining enabling environments for boundary spanners to engage in behaviour that supports the purchaser s goals and values, and, developing information management systems targeted at enhancing regular capturing of incumbent and alternative supplier capability and capacity before re-sourcing decision time. The results from this study will primarily benefit sourcing managers in asset-intensive service organisations operating in capital constrained economies that have outsourced or intend to outsource maintenance.

Design and assembly of differential bevel gears : consequences of in sourcing / Design och montering av koniska växlar i differentialerBerggren, Adrian, Landgren, Jonathan January 2022 (has links)
The electrification of the automotive industry is the largest change in decades of the industry. This fact demands that established actors evaluate their current strategies and develop new competence. The engineering differences between conventional internal combustion engines vehicles and electric vehicles are many and significant. This means that strategies that made sense in past, needs to be reevaluated and recontextualized for today- and future needs. The goal of this case study was to create a basis from a ‘’birds eye view’’ of sourcing decisions for manufacturing companies. This case is designed based on Volvo Cars wishes and thoughts regarding the decision of in-house design and assembly of differential bevel gears. We believe that other manufacturing companies can use this report as a basis when faced with a similar sourcing decision. The basis of the case is qualitative, to get a thorough quantitative result, deeper investigation into engineering valus, economic impact and company-specific factors must be investigated. The study has been conducted in two parts, where the first part gives an understanding of the technical parameters to understand the process of the process of design and assembly of differential bevel gears. The second part examines, with the help of a business case, earlier case studies and compares the case company's situation and contextualize the wants and needs with a resource-based view and summarized through a SWOT-analysis to finally get a quantification with the help of a concept-decision matrix. Based on what the company's wishes were regarding a sourcing decision, a result could be determined in the form of a recommendation to the company. The results showed that insourcing would benefit the company. This is partly due to the fact that they would get cross-functional knowledge and that a collaboration between design and assembly would benefit the final product, the end-customer and therefore the company at large. The results from the concept matrix indicate that the company should choose the insourcing strategy. But there are many parameters to consider. What is not addressed in this report are the economic impact compared to the technical and organizational gains of an insourcing decision, which could be researched in future studies.

Deciding on Sourcing Option for Hosting of Software Applications in Organisations / Organisationers beslut om lokalisering av IT-drift för mjukvaruapplikationerJohansson, Björn January 2007 (has links)
Software applications are of great importance in organisations, and performance of an organisation depends on how hosting of software applications are organised. This thesis deals with the question: Why and how organisations decide on specific sourcing options for software applications hosting. The thesis describes and explains sourcing decision-making processes made in the Swedish Post (MeLo) and Jönköpings Kommun (the municipality). MeLo’s sourcing decision resulted in outsourcing of hosting, and the municipality’s sourcing decision resulted in internal sourcing of hosting. Both organisations were distinguished by a decentralised structure to a great extent and showed a huge diversity in software applications used. The sourcing decisions resulted in a change to a more centralised hosting of software applications. The thesis is a retrospective case study based on semi-structured interviews and documents analysis. Concepts from the resource-based view and factors described in sourcing literature are used to analyse these sourcing decisions. From nine theoretical initial propositions 28 propositions are developed about why and how sourcing decisions are made. From these propositions, relations are described and some conclusions are presented about why and how sourcing decisions are made. The main conclusion is that maturity level regarding software applications usage seems to influences the start, the process as such, and the outcome of a sourcing decision-making process. This is explained as the more mature the organisation is regarding usage of software applications the more proactive decision-makers are in the sourcing decision. It is also identified that involved factors can be either influencing or justifying, and it is found that control of software applications usage influences the start of a sourcing decision to a high extent. The findings suggest that a sourcing decision-making process can be described as an irrational decision process that aims at increasing commitment on an already made decision. The study suggests that the less mature and more decentralised the organisation is the more reactive and the stronger influence the need to increase control over software applications have in a sourcing decision-making process. Postens lokaliseringbeslut resulterade i utlokalisering.
