Effects of Acculturation Gap and Attachment Style on South Asian Adolescent Well-Being

South Asian (SA) adolescents experience the added challenges of identity development and coping as a minority population of color in a predominantly White host culture. Adolescent attachment style (AS) with their parents, along with an acculturation gap (AG) with their parents, can either add to or alleviate their struggles. A matched acculturation style and secure AS with their parents were hypothesized to result in higher ethnic identity and adaptive coping. The Brief COPE, Multiethnic Identity Measure, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, and the Bicultural Inquiry Questionnaire were used to measure the independent (AG and AS) and dependent variables (identity development and coping skills) among a sample of 39 SA adolescents and their parent dyads from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. All participants were recruited through SA temples, schools, and websites. Two-way ANOVAs revealed no effects of AG and AS on ethnic identity and coping skills, which corroborates with the results of several other studies. However, the small sample size obtained for this study reduced the reliability of the results. Further research with a larger sample is warranted for more reliable results with greater power. The use of alternative measures should also be considered given the difficulty with measuring the multifaceted constructs of acculturation and ethnic identity. More information on the impact of attachment and acculturation on well-being can contribute to social change by providing data needed to develop preventive and therapeutic interventions, community programs, and government policies to assist immigrant adolescents and families.

Precarious Citizens, Excepted State: Sikh Rootedness in Kashmir After the Chittisinghpora Massacre

This dissertation examines the ‘failed’ forced migration of the Kashmiri Sikh community after they became targets of an attack carried out by unknown perpetrators on March 20th, 2000, in Chittisinghpora, a quiet Sikh village hidden away in the mountains of South Kashmir. Claiming the lives of thirty-five Sikh men from the village, the attack was a first for Sikhs who by all accounts had been ‘spared’ the violence of the Kashmir conflict and had been living peacefully in Kashmir Valley for generations. Although no one knows who perpetrated the attack or why, speculation runs rife that its foremost purpose was to trigger a mass displacement of Sikhs from the region. Yet, after days of contemplating whether they should move, the Sikhs stayed. If indeed the aim of the violence was to trigger a mass displacement, then what explains why the Kashmiri Sikhs were not displaced? Using Chittisinghpora as an entry point, my dissertation aims to interrogate displacement as a response to violence. I use the term ‘rootedness’, which Myron Weiner describes as a sort of territorial ethnicity with which people make claims to a space, to describe the Sikh decision to stay and argue the ability (and desire) of people to continue living in a place of violence may be construed as an act of resistance not only to the intended consequence of violence, in this case displacement, but to the violence itself. Examining a failed forced migration, therefore, allows us to understand not only the circumstances under which a community resists getting displaced despite experiencing violence but also how people continue to live in the place of violence. To understand Sikh rootedness in Kashmir, I conducted ethnographic research in Kashmir over a period of eight months in 2018 and follow up visits in March 2019 and 2021, during which I collected over 100 interviews with Sikhs and Muslims in North, South and central Kashmir, and completed several hours of observation every week. Additionally, I collected data from newspaper archives located in Punjab and historical archives located in New Delhi. I explain Sikh rootedness as a function of two main factors: 1) the precarity that comes with being a group that is neither considered the ally of the Indian state nor of the Muslims, which allows Sikhs to negotiate safety and 2) the landedness of Kashmiri Sikhs, and to a lesser extent, their employment in government which are economic anchors. Together, both factors allow Sikhs to assert social and economic agency and maintain a peaceful ‘coexistence’ with Muslims, enough to justify remaining rooted. Although the focus on displacement in migration studies is certainly warranted given the massive numbers of people displaced due to conflict, the fact is that not everyone can, or wants to, leave. Given this, a focus on what keeps people rooted is urgently needed. In the scholarship on Kashmir, displacement has been a predominant theme, given the large-scale exodus of the Kashmiri Hindus (Pandits) following an escalation of violence in the state in the 1990s. This has led to an unfortunate communalization of much of the discourse that comes out of Kashmir, and also sometimes reduced it to a ‘Hindu-Muslim’ or ‘India-Pakistan’ conflict. Sikhs are predominantly absent from this scholarship. Even in the discipline of Critical Kashmir Studies which has sought to focus on the people’s experiences of conflict rather than a religious or statist narratives, Sikhs experiences in and of conflict, remain missing. Understanding their lived experience in Kashmir, therefore, attempts to correct this erasure and also disrupts binary discourses. / Geography

The human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) epidemic has surpassed forty years with many medical advancements in prevention and treatment. Often believed to be at negligible or low risk by society at large, sexual minority women have remained understudied regarding their risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), leaving their sexual health inadequately understood and supported in healthcare and social services. The sexual health of young South Asian sexual minority women, who are multiply minoritized due to their intersecting identities, has been entirely overlooked. This qualitative study aimed to understand the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of young South Asian sexual minority women as it pertains to their HIV/STI risk. Barriers and facilitators to accessing community-based sexual health supports and services were also investigated. A community-engaged approach was taken to develop this study in partnership with the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention to investigate the HIV/STI risk context and sexual health needs of this group residing in the Greater Toronto Area. A maximum variation sampling strategy was used to recruit six young South Asian sexual minority women and semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to collect narrative data. Narrative analysis of the data found socio-cultural and structural influences which guide the HIV/STI risk context for this group. The participants illuminated an inadequate understanding of sexual health when engaging in sex with women, an overall low HIV/STI risk perception, barriers to adequate sexual healthcare and health promotion resources, and multiple minority stressors which impacted their access to safe sex. These findings have major implications for school-based sexual health education, medical training for healthcare practitioners, and sexual health support and services provided by community-based sexual health organizations in the Greater Toronto Area. / Thesis / Master of Public Health (MPH)

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is played a vital role for boosting up the economies of developing countries. Hence, it is necessary to know the factors that determines the flows of FDI in the developing countries. This study has attempted to investigate how different factors affect the inflow of foreign direct investment in South Asian Countries. To attain the objective this study has collected data on the respective variables for 45 years and considered seven countries. The relationship between different economic variables and their overall impact on FDI inflows have been examined through various panel models like basic pooled OLS estimation, entity fixed effect model, time fixed effect estimation and random effect model. The outcome of this study is that GDP of the country is the main factor behind the FDI inflows in South Asian countries.

Effect of the Muslim Headscarf on Face Perception. A series of psychological experiments looking at how the Muslim headscarf influences the perception of (South Asian) faces.

The Muslim headscarf conceals the hair and other external features of a face. For this reason it may have implications for the recognition of such faces. The experiments reported in this thesis aimed to investigate anecdotal reports, which suggested that headscarf wearing females are more difficult to recognise. This was done by employing a series of experiments which involved a yes/no recognition task. The stimuli that were used were images of South Asian females who were photographed wearing a Muslim headscarf (HS), with their own hair visible (H), and a third set of stimuli were produced in which their external features were cropped (CR). Most importantly, participants either took part in the condition in which the state of the external features remained the same between the learning and test stage (Same) or the condition in which they were switched between the two stages (Switch). In one experiment participants completed a Social Contact Questionnaire. Surprisingly, in the Same condition, there was no difference in the recognition rates of faces that were presented with hair, with headscarf, or cropped faces. However, participants in the Switch condition performed significantly worse than those in the Same condition. It was also found that there was no difference in the % of fixations to the external features between the Same and Switch condition, which implied that the drop in performance between the two conditions was not mediated by eye-movements. These results suggest that the internal and external features of a face are processed interactively and, although the external features were not fixated on, a manipulation to them caused a drop in performance. This was confirmed in a separate experiment in which participants were unable to ignore the external features when they were asked to judge the similarity of the internal features of pairs of faces. Pairs of headscarf faces were rated as being more similar compared to pairs of faces with hair. Finally, for one group of participants it was found that contact with headscarf-wearing females was positively correlated with the recognition of headscarf-wearing faces. It was concluded that the headscarf per se did not impair face recognition and that there is enough information in the internal features of a face for optimal recognition, however, performance was disrupted when the presence or absence of the headscarf was manipulated.
