Proprietés syntaxiques et fonctionnements pragmatico-discursifs / Ligators of cause : contrastive study between the spoken Arabic of Tripoli and the spoken French of Paris. Syntactic properties and pragmatic-discursive functionBenmoftah, Najah 15 April 2016 (has links)
This contrastive linguistic thesis describes and contrasts the syntactic properties and the pragmatic-discursive function of parce que in spoken French in the seventh district of Paris and some of its Arab equivalents in spoken Arabic of Tripoli (Libya): liʔǝnna, ʕlēxāṭǝṛ, māhu and biḥkum.Regarding the spoken Arabic of Tripoli, these ligators may belong to two different grammatical classes: they may be conjunctional ligators and / or prepositional ligators. It depends on their degree of grammaticalization. While liʔanna and māhu are conjunctional ligators that introduce causal clauses organized around verbal or non-verbal predicates, ʕlēxāṭǝṛ and biḥkum can be used as prepositional ligators and introduce circumstantial complements or be grammaticalized as conjunctional ligators and introduce causal clause. In addition, these ligators can occupy a canonical position when the ligator follows a main clause and introduces a causal clause or a non-canonical position for which there are two cases : either the utterance begins with the causal which is introduced by the ligator of cause and is followed by the main clause, or the utterance begins with the main clause which is followed by the causal not introduced by a ligator of cause; the latter is found at the end of the causal and closing the utterance. From a pragmatic point of view, changing the order of the constituents when ligators and causal clauses are not in canonical position allows the focalization of the causal clause.Unlike the spoken Arabic of Tripoli, the examination of the “Corpus Français Parlé Parsien des années 2000 (CFPP2000)” shows that parce que is conjunctional ligator. It introduces a causal clause organized around verbal predicate, rarely non-verbal.Parce que can occupy a canonical position when the ligator follows a main clause and introduces a causal clause and a non-canonical position when parce que follows c’est and introduces a causal clause. However, it cannot be postponed and it does not accept either suffix. When parce que introduces several causal clauses, it may be found but in reduced form que, giving a series of que.In addition, parce que cannot connect two utterances coordinated by the preposition et. From a pragmatic point of view, when the utterance begins with c’est parce que this structure allows to focalisation of the causal clause.

A Bayesian Approach of Semantic Composition for Spoken Language Understanding Modules in Spoken Dialog SystemsMeurs, Marie-Jean 10 December 2009 (has links)
These systems are deployed into a wide range of application fields from commercial services to tutorial or information services. However, the communication skills of such systems are bounded by their spoken language understanding abilities. Our work focus on the spoken language understanding module which links the automatic speech recognition module and the dialog manager. From the user’s utterance analysis, the spoken language understanding module derives a representation of its semantic content upon which the dialog manager can decide the next best action to perform. The system we propose introduces a stochastic approach based on Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBNs) for spoken language understanding. DBN-based models allow to infer and then to compose semantic frame-based tree structures from speech transcriptions. First, we developed a semantic knowledge source covering the domain of our experimental corpus (MEDIA, a French corpus for tourism information and hotel booking). The semantic frames were designed according to the FrameNet paradigm and a hand-craft rule-based approach was used to derive the seed annotated training data. Then, to derive automatically the frame meaning representations, we propose a system based on a two decoding step process using DBNs : first basic concepts are derived from the user’s utterance transcriptions, then inferences are made on sequential semantic frame structures, considering all the available previous annotation levels. The inference process extracts all possible sub-trees according to lower level information and composes the hypothesized branches into a single utterance-span tree. The composition step investigates two different algorithms : a heuristic minimizing the size and the weight of the tree ; a context-sensitive decision process based on support vector machines for detecting the relations between the hypothesized frames. This work investigates a stochastic process for generating and composing semantic frames using DBNs. The proposed approach offers a convenient way to automatically derive semantic annotations of speech utterances based on a complete frame hierarchical structure. Experimental results, obtained on the MEDIA dialog corpus, show that the system is able to supply the dialog manager with a rich and thorough representation of the user’s request semantics

The agreement of the past participle in spoken French, as a sociolinguistic variable : production and perceptionGaucher, Damien Fabien Rémi January 2013 (has links)
This study represents a sociolinguistic contribution to the analysis of Past Participle Agreement (PPA) in [avoir+PP] constructions. In spoken French, this agreement is marked only for gender, and is subject to much variation in the production of speakers of French. The objectives of this thesis are twofold: firstly, to observe the variable in the context of production, by a quantitative study of several corpora. Variation in the production of PPA is tested against linguistic factors, such as the position of the participle in the verbal group where it appears. Social and stylistic factors are also considered, notably the socioprofessional category of the speaker. These analyses reveal that agreement is conditioned by a complex interaction of these factors. The second objective is the design of a Matched Guise Test, based on scripted conversations. This test was carried out with a view to measuring the extent to which the presence or absence of marked PPA, often considered a typical result of normative pressures, affects the stereotypical social representation of a speaker. Differences in informants' judgements were modest, and two issues are discussed with regard to this: firstly, the validity of the methodology, and secondly, the evaluation of PPA as a sociolinguistic marker. Both parts of this thesis reflect the methodological issues pertaining to the investigation of a rare variable.

Resource-dependent acoustic and language modeling for spoken keyword searchChen, I-Fan 27 May 2016 (has links)
In this dissertation, three research directions were explored to alleviate two major issues, i.e., the use of incorrect models and training/test condition mismatches, in the modeling frameworks of modern spoken keyword search (KWS) systems. Each of the three research directions, which include (i) data-efficient training processes, (ii) system optimization objectives, and (iii) data augmentation, utilizes different types and amounts of training resources in different ways to ameliorate the two issues of acoustic and language modeling in modern KWS systems. To be more specific, resource-dependent keyword modeling, keyword-boosted sMBR (state-level minimum Bayes risk) training, and multilingual acoustic modeling are proposed and investigated for acoustic modeling in this research. For language modeling, keyword-aware language modeling, discriminative keyword-aware language modeling, and web text augmented language modeling are presented and discussed. The dissertation provides a comprehensive collection of solutions and strategies to the acoustic and language modeling problems in KWS. It also offers insights into the realization of good-performance KWS systems. Experimental results show that the data-efficient training process and data augmentation are the two directions providing the most prominent performance improvement for KWS systems. While modifying system optimization objectives provides smaller yet consistent performance enhancement in KWS systems with different configurations. The effects of the proposed acoustic and language modeling approaches in the three directions are also shown to be additive and can be combined to further improve the overall KWS system performance.

The speech act of advice in educational contexts in isiZuluNgcobo, Lazarus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on the communicative processes of advice in isiZulu through
which people aid each other with problems and stresses of daily life, including ways
in which support is communicated. When friends or family members attempt to help
one another with stress and problems, they frequently give advice.
Within the field of pragmatics, advice is a common but potentially face-threatening
response to a friend or a loved one who is upset about a problem. Consequently it is
useful to identify ways a speaker may show regard for face in this kind of episode.
Advice can threaten the hearer's autonomy by imposing the speaker's authority and
solutions on the hearer and it can also imply criticism of the hearer's emotional
reaction or handling of the problem.
In this study, twenty-one advice topics, by Goldsmith (2000) that can be used in
various troubles talk episodes in isiZulu have been examined. It has been found that
some advice situations have more topics than others. The situation with more advice
topics is the one referred to as personal. This is because people are always very
keen to give more advice to people with personal problems than to people with other
problems. The situations with the least number of topics are abuse and teachers,
because they are very sensitive in nature. The study found that the sensitivity comes
from the fact that third parties are involved. People tend to be reluctant to give advice
which might lead to confrontation between the parties that are involved. In this
research, the parties that are involved are learners on the one side and the
parents/teachers on the other side. The other factor is that people do not want to see
a parent who is abusing his/her child going to jailor a teacher who does not like a
particular child losing his/her job because of the advice they gave to the learners.
ondersoek.
onderwerpe is.
'n Verdere

The speech act of advice in educational contexts in SetswanaMogase, Emily Phuti 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines data from advice-giving in Setswana relating to pragmatic theorists'
argument that every human interaction, to a large extent carries with it an element of
threatening one or both participants' face. The speech act of politeness has been
identified as one of the most effective speech acts to be employed in giving as well as
soliciting advice. Every speech act is influenced by contextual, cultural and many other
background factors associated to age, gender and rank to mention a few, which contribute
towards how the speech is composed.
The issues relating to the theory of politeness prompted this study on the extent to which
politeness plays a role in giving advice in an educational context of Setswana speaking
students. The study has evaluated Brown and Levinsons' theory of politeness as a
universal phenomenon against the findings of my data, in that the universality of these
theorists does not quite fit with this study. The variable percentages in this data, especially
in giving advice, indicate that politeness does not always exist in terms of positive and
negative face in the participants' mind but other considerations related to the goal of the
speech act are the main source of the speech act.
In this study, politeness in the Setswana school context has demonstrated that politeness
has been employed as a strategy for encoding distance between the speaker and the
solicitor. The purpose of advising teachers and students through politeness behavior is to
mitigate face and to create a favorable context anticipated by the solicitor.

Isenzo sentetho yokwala kumaziko emfundo esixhoseniMlandu, Mirriam Nozidima 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the speech act of refusal in educational contexts in isiXhosa. The
speech utterance is used to accept or refuse request. The request can be made by a
friend, parent, school principal etc. The authority of the one making request is very
important because it makes the recipient of the request to think twice before he or she
refuses. This is done by the fact that the recipient is afraid to damage the face of the
requestor.
Secondly, the rights that people have make it difficult for the person in authority to use his
powers in a way that is not satisfactory, because people belong to unions that protect their
rights. For instance, the teacher requests leave because he wants to go and make
provisions for his son who is coming from the initiation school. In this regard, the principal
is unable to refuse fully although the exams are around the corner. He has to use certain
strategies in convincing the teacher about the importance of the forthcoming exams.
In the Department of education there is a district director and his team, responsible for
certain departments, the school inspectors, subject-advisors, school principals, teachers
and students. Each and every one of the above-mentioned has a right to make request.
Some of them resort into using politeness strategies when requesting or refusing to obey
the request.

The speech act of apology in Setswana educational contextsMangwegape, Bridget Kesaobaka 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An apology in Setswana is offered ;when an individual has violated a social norm or want to restore
any form of a complainable. When it is given, it serves as a remedial work, designed to smooth over
any social disruption that was caused. Sometimes a person who is suppose to apologize may find
reasons to minimize the degree of the offence. If the offence in question is big, a verbal apology
may be insufficient to restore the damaged relationship.
Male and female learners commit a lot of offences towards each other at school and they are
obliged to apologize for such offences. In the process of apologizing, they are faced with a wide
chioce of strategies to choose from. In most cases, male learners have a tendency of giving an
explanation to their offences. They do not always seek for a direct apology. In the acceptance of
their offences, they opt for longer strategies to apologize. Males seem to be either proud or shy to
ask for an apology from females. Female learners on the other hand, do not want to use longer
strategies to apologize, but they ask for forgiveness immidiately.
It is not all the males who do not want to apologize directly to females, but there are some who
apologize directly. They are the ones who take females as their equals and they also want to
maintain a good relationship with them. The same applies with females, a minimal number of them
use longer strategies to apologize. They do not use direct strategies. There are other strategies also
useful to Setswana male and female learners, but their use is not so popular. Strategies like explicit
acceptance of the blame and expression of self-deficiency are considered the least of manifested.
An apology is usually influenced by the way the complainant shows his or her dissatisfaction. Male
and female learners also differ with the way they complain. They use complaint strategies
differently. Both male and female learners use direct accusation and indirect accusation extensively.
But the difference comes by the fact that females are longer with their complaints than males.
Females show their annoyance by involving more complaint strategies. Males do not take long to
complain, they involve a few strategies. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Apologie in Setswana word gedoen wanneer 'n individu 'n sosiale norm oortree het, of enige
vorm van 'n klagte wil herstel. Wanneer dit gegee word, dien 'n apologie as remediële werk,
In
so populêr nie.

Complexity accuracy and fluency in task-based instruction for Xhosa second language at tertiary levelMazwi, Ntombomzi Rose-May 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / Full text to be digitised and attached to bibliographic record. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores a framework for the implementation of task-based instruction for
Xhosa second language at tertiary level. Central to the task-based approach to second
language learning are the goals of complexity, accuracy and fluency as outcomes. The
principles of task-based instruction to syllabus design are examined as this approach to
syllabus design is believed to provide an effective base for successful second language
acquisition.
Theoretical assumptions as propounded by vanous researchers are discussed paymg
particular reference to the nature of second language learning and teaching pedagogy. Most
linguists agree on the view that Universal Grammar is a constant background against
which any language learning process takes place. Universal Grammar is also viewed as the
faculty which influences second language acquisition. The study will explore the
relationship between second language theory and pedagogy. The Communicative
Language Teaching is advanced in this study as an appropriate method for teaching
language.
The task-based syllabus is discussed with reference to different syllabus types which
exhibit tasks as a unit of analysis. The relationship between grammar pedagogy and taskbased
methodology is illustrated. A range of communication tasks for Xhosa is presented
as an example of a task-based course design and analysed according to a task typology to
investigate the communicative value of each task type. Salient functions, notions and
language structures are identified based on Xhosa communicative task dialogues.
It is hoped that Xhosa second language teachers and researchers will pursue the approach
that are advanced here and that they will be able to make a contribution to Xhosa second language course design. It is also hoped that this study has succeeded in dealing with
aspects of Xhosa second language learning and that Xhosa teaching will benefit in a
variety of respects.

'n Verskeidenheid kommunikatiewe
