Teachers' Beliefs in promoting Gender Awareness using Fiction / Lärares syn på genusmedveten undervisning genom skönlitteratur

Mai, Ann-Kathrin, Ljung, Jessica January 2022 (has links)
Every generation views the world through different lenses, and teachers must continuously expand their horizons to accommodate paradigm shifts. To better align with the current concept of gender, Skolverket is updating the curriculum as of July 1st, 2022, and proposes that all language teaching is well suited for this purpose. According to previous research on how to best teach sensitive subjects, particularly gender awareness, fiction is highly recommended. The present study sets out to explore teacher beliefs regarding teaching gender awareness through fiction in the EFL classroom in Sweden. Moreover, it investigates how teachers' beliefs affect the selection of fiction to address gender awareness. Semi-structured interviews with five upper secondary English teachers with various experiences were conducted. Contrary to previous research, the results do not reveal differences based on the participants' teaching experience. The results show that the participants acknowledged that gender awareness was to be implemented in teaching according to the curriculum. However, they differed in their interpretation of how and if this should be applied in EFL teaching. Furthermore, some participants stated that their implementation of gender awareness depended on their view of the classroom environment. In addition, results show a difference between participants' beliefs on addressing gender awareness and how this affects their selection of fiction. Keywords: gender, teaching, fiction, upper secondary, teacher beliefs, ESL, EFL

Skolhunden som pedagogiskt verktyg : Vad säger rektorerna?

Slagbrand, Alva, Gyllebring, Tove January 2024 (has links)
Slutgiltigt godkännandedatum: 2024-01-12

Heathcliff’s Complex Character : Psychoanalytic Theory of Personality and Reader-response Theory to Understand Heathcliff / Heathcliffs Komplexa Karaktär : psykoanalys och läsar-respons-teori för att förstå Heathcliff

Ashmawi, Mohamed January 2024 (has links)
Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights, presents Heathcliff as a complicated character that makes it hard for readers to declare him a victim or a villain, hence leaving them with questions about his morality. This work looks deep into Heathcliff’s tough character by integrating the view of psychoanalysis with reader-response theory. Using Freud’s ideas helps ussee how the Id, ego, and super-ego and defense mechanisms work together to help understand Heathcliff’s personality. It also shows how basic instincts and psychological aspirations pushhim desperately for revenge. Moreover, the essay explores Rosenblatt’s idea of reader-response theory and shows how different readers’ feelings and starting points make them give different opinions on Heathcliff. The changing relationship teaches us how people behave differently and that moral views can be transparent and fair. Brontë’s significant gothic parts make it hard todefine Heathcliff’s character. Her use of unreliable narrators and the horrific atmosphere challenge reality and perception, hence making the reader confused and as disoriented asHeathcliff, who cannot really justify his actions. Ultimately, this essay presents the depths of Heathcliff, explaining his complex character beyond the surface of the surrounding Wuthering Heights. Further explaining that his tragedy is a result of his own past, the demons within him, and our own subjective reaction. Combining the two theories – psychoanalytic and reader-response – will help to reveal his mystery, providing a glimpse into the depths and shadows lurking in the human mind.
