Testing methods for calibrating Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) diameter growth predictions

Cankaya, Ergin Cagatay 20 September 2018 (has links)
The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is a growth and yield modeling system widely-used for predicting stand and tree-level attributes for management and planning applications in North American forests. The accuracy of FVS predictions for a range of tree and stand level attributes depends a great deal on the performance of the diameter increment model and its predictions of change in diameter at breast height (DBH) over time. To address the challenge of predicting growth in highly variable and geographically expansive forest systems, FVS was designed to include an internal calibration algorithm that makes use of growth observations, when available, from permanent inventory plots. The basic idea is that observed growth rates on a collection of remeasured trees are used to adjust or "calibrate" FVS diameter growth predictions. Therefore, DBH modeling was the focus of this investigation. Five methods were proposed for local calibration of individual tree DBH growth predictions and compared to two sets of results generated without calibration. Data from the US Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program were used to test the methods for eleven widely-distributed forest tree species in Virginia. Two calibration approaches were based on median prediction errors from locally-observed DBH increments spanning a five year average time interval. Two were based on simple linear regression models fitted to the locally-observed prediction errors, and one method employed a mixed effects regression model with a random intercept term estimated from locally-observed DBH increments. Data witholding, specifically a leave-one-out cross-validation was used to compare results of the methods tested. Results showed that any of the calibration approaches tested in general led to improved accuracy of DBH growth predictions, with either of the median-based methods or regression based methods performing better than the random-effects-based approach. Equivalence testing showed that median or regression-based local calibration methods met error tolerances within ± 12% of observed DBH increments for all species with the random effects approach meeting a larger tolerance of ± 17%. These results showed improvement over uncalibrated models, which failed to meet tolerances as high as ± 30% for some species in a newly-fitted DBH growth model for Virginia, and as high as ± 170% for an existing model fitted to data from a much larger region of the Southeastern United States. Local calibration of regional DBH increment models provides an effective means of substantially reducing prediction errors when a relatively small set of observations are available from local sources such as permanent forest inventory plots, or the FIA database. / MS / The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is a growth and yield model widely-used for predicting stand dynamics, management and decision support in North American forests. Diameter increment is a major component in modeling tree growth. The system of integrated analytical tools in FVS is primarily based on the performance of the diameter increment model and the subsequent use of predicted in diameter at breast height (DBH) over time in forecasting tree attributes. To address the challenge of predicting growth in highly variable and geographically expansive forest systems, FVS was designed to include an internal calibration algorithm that makes use of growth observations, when available, from permanent inventory plots. The basic idea was that observed growth rates on a small set of remeasured trees are used to adjust or “calibrate” FVS growth predictions. The FVS internal calibration was the subject being investigated here. Five alternative methods were proposed attributed to a specific site or stand of interest and compared to two sets of results, which were based on median prediction errors, generated without calibration. Results illustrated that median-based methods or regression based methods performed better than the random-effects-based approach using independently observed growth data from Forest Service FIA re-measurements in Virginia. Local calibration of regional DBH increment models provides an effective means of substantially reducing prediction errors. The results of this study should also provide information to evaluate the efficiency of FVS calibration alternatives and a possible method for future implementation.

Statistical analysis of corrective and preventive maintenance in medical equipment

von Schewelov, Linn January 2022 (has links)
Maintenance of medical equipment plays an important role in ensuring the healthcare quality so that the care can be conducted with minimal risk. Preventive maintenance is performed to maintain the equipment in satisfactory operating condition, while corrective maintenance is made when there is an unpredicted maintenance requirement. This study aims to determine what effect preventive maintenance has on corrective maintenance. A correlation analysis, regression analysis and survival analysis are performed on work-order data from 2000-2021. The results obtained indicate that increasing the number of preventive maintenances made to medical equipment will decrease the number of corrective maintenances required for the medical equipment.

Quesada Olmo, María Nieves 01 December 2019 (has links)
[EN] The goal of this research is to analise and to develop a system that allows the determination of the most general movement dynamics of a tall building, as well as to quantify its evolution over time by means of Gaussian algorithms revision and by applying GNSS techniques and methodologies. In this thesis, the oscillation of the control quadrilateral located on the roof of the ``Torre Espacio'' bulding and determined by a high precision survey network is assessed rigorously with the method of sequential solution with addition of variables or parameters using VRS-RTK techniques. It is the data processing, together with the gaussian adjustment methodology based on a conditional tax own physical reality and analysis of partial and final results allowing us to achieve a high level of confidence that translates into effective management real-time risk. In parallel, the instantaneous and simultaneous precision of each antenna in every moment is determined. That is the error surface and the individual, simultaneous reliability of each GNSS receiver. Prior to assessing the structure dynamics, the sensitivity threshold is computed, under which nothing can be affirmed or denied with respect to the displacement produced in the control structure. It involves testing the accuracy of the instrumentation GNSS and gaussian initial adjustment mathematical model. The project concludes with the development of a warning system that is activated at the time when the movement of the building reaches a preset threshold. On Updating Preconditioners for the Iterative Solution of Linear Systems

Guerrero Flores, Danny Joel 02 July 2018 (has links)
The main topic of this thesis is updating preconditioners for solving large sparse linear systems Ax=b by using Krylov iterative methods. Two interesting types of problems are considered. In the first one is studied the iterative solution of non-singular, non-symmetric linear systems where the coefficient matrix A has a skew-symmetric part of low-rank or can be well approximated with a skew-symmetric low-rank matrix. Systems like this arise from the discretization of PDEs with certain Neumann boundary conditions, the discretization of integral equations as well as path following methods, for example, the Bratu problem and the Love's integral equation. The second type of linear systems considered are least squares (LS) problems that are solved by considering the solution of the equivalent normal equations system. More precisely, we consider the solution of modified and rank deficient LS problems. By modified LS problem, it is understood that the set of linear relations is updated with some new information, a new variable is added or, contrarily, some information or variable is removed from the set. Rank deficient LS problems are characterized by a coefficient matrix that has not full rank, which makes difficult the computation of an incomplete factorization of the normal equations. LS problems arise in many large-scale applications of the science and engineering as for instance neural networks, linear programming, exploration seismology or image processing. Usually, incomplete LU or incomplete Cholesky factorization are used as preconditioners for iterative methods. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of a technique for updating preconditioners by bordering. It consists in the computation of an approximate decomposition for an equivalent augmented linear system, that is used as preconditioner for the original problem. The theoretical study and the results of the numerical experiments presented in this thesis show the performance of the preconditioner technique proposed and its competitiveness compared with other methods available in the literature for computing preconditioners for the problems studied. Analysis of Fix‐point Aspects for Wireless Infrastructure Systems

Grill, Andreas, Englund, Robin January 2009 (has links)
A large amount of today’s telecommunication consists of mobile and short distance wireless applications, where the effect of the channel is unknown and changing over time, and thus needs to be described statistically. Therefore the received signal can not be accurately predicted and has to be estimated. Since telecom systems are implemented in real-time, the hardware in the receiver for estimating the sent signal can for example be based on a DSP where the statistic calculations are performed. A fixed-point DSP with a limited number of bits and a fixed binary point causes larger quantization errors compared to floating point operations with higher accuracy. The focus on this thesis has been to build a library of functions for handling fixed-point data. A class that can handle the most common arithmetic operations and a least squares solver for fixed-point have been implemented in MATLAB code. The MATLAB Fixed-Point Toolbox could have been used to solve this task, but in order to have full control of the algorithms and the fixed-point handling an independent library was created. The conclusion of the simulation made in this thesis is that the least squares result are depending more on the number of integer bits then the number of fractional bits. / fixtal, telekommunikation, DSP, MATLAB, Fixed-Point Toolbox, minsta-kvadrat-lösning, flyttal, Householder QR faktorisering, saturering, kvantiseringsbrus

Detection and quantification of poliovirus infection using FTIR spectroscopy and cell culture

Lee-Montiel, Felipe, Reynolds, Kelly, Riley, Mark January 2011 (has links)
BACKGROUND:In a globalized word, prevention of infectious diseases is a major challenge. Rapid detection of viable virus particles in water and other environmental samples is essential to public health risk assessment, homeland security and environmental protection. Current virus detection methods, especially assessing viral infectivity, are complex and time-consuming, making point-of-care detection a challenge. Faster, more sensitive, highly specific methods are needed to quantify potentially hazardous viral pathogens and to determine if suspected materials contain viable viral particles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with cellular-based sensing, may offer a precise way to detect specific viruses. This approach utilizes infrared light to monitor changes in molecular components of cells by tracking changes in absorbance patterns produced following virus infection. In this work poliovirus (PV1) was used to evaluate the utility of FTIR spectroscopy with cell culture for rapid detection of infective virus particles.RESULTS:Buffalo green monkey kidney (BGMK) cells infected with different virus titers were studied at 1 - 12 hours post-infection (h.p.i.). A partial least squares (PLS) regression method was used to analyze and model cellular responses to different infection titers and times post-infection. The model performs best at 8 h.p.i., resulting in an estimated root mean square error of cross validation (RMSECV) of 17 plaque forming units (PFU)/ml when using low titers of infection of 10 and 100 PFU/ml. Higher titers, from 103 to 106 PFU/ml, could also be reliably detected.CONCLUSIONS:This approach to poliovirus detection and quantification using FTIR spectroscopy and cell culture could potentially be extended to compare biochemical cell responses to infection with different viruses. This virus detection method could feasibly be adapted to an automated scheme for use in areas such as water safety monitoring and medical diagnostics.

Topic Analysis of Tweets on the European Refugee Crisis Using Non-negative Matrix Factorization

Shen, Chong 01 January 2016 (has links)
The ongoing European Refugee Crisis has been one of the most popular trending topics on Twitter for the past 8 months. This paper applies topic modeling on bulks of tweets to discover the hidden patterns within these social media discussions. In particular, we perform topic analysis through solving Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) as an Inexact Alternating Least Squares problem. We accelerate the computation using techniques including tweet sampling and augmented NMF, compare NMF results with different ranks and visualize the outputs through topic representation and frequency plots. We observe that supportive sentiments maintained a strong presence while negative sentiments such as safety concerns have emerged over time.

Identifying Key Determinants of Service Provider Effectiveness and the Impact it has on Outsourced Security Success

Lewis, James B. 01 January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to identify key determinants of service provider effectiveness and how it impacts outsourced security success. As environments have become more robust and dynamic, many organizations have made the decision to leverage external security expertise and have outsourced many of their information technology security functions to Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs). Information Systems Outsourcing, at its core, is when a customer chooses to outsource certain information technology functions or services to a service provider and engages in a legally binding agreement. While legal contracts govern many aspects of an outsourcing arrangement, it cannot serve as the sole source of determining the outcome of a project. Organizations are viewing outsourcing success as an attainment of net benefits achieved through the use of a service provider. The effectiveness of the service provider has an impact on a company’s ability to meet business objectives and adhere to service level agreements. Many empirical studies have focused on outsourcing success, but few have focused on service provider effectiveness, which can serve as a catalyst to outsourcing success. For this research, Agency Theory (AT) was proposed as a foundation for developing the research model which included key areas of focus in information asymmetry, the outsourcing contract, moral hazard, trust, service provider effectiveness, and security outsourcing success. Agency Theory helped uncover several hypotheses deemed germane to service provider effectiveness and provided insight into helping understand the principal-agent paradigm that exists with security outsourcing. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Partial Least Squares-Structured Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) were used with SmartPLS to analyze the data and provided clarity and validation for the research model and helped uncover key determinants of service provider effectiveness. The statistical results showed support for information asymmetry, contract, and trust, all of which were mediated through service provider effectiveness. The results also showed that service provider effectiveness is directly correlated to increasing security outsourcing success. This concluded that the research model showed significant results to support 4 of the 5 hypotheses proposed and helped uncover key findings on how security outsourcing success can be impacted. This research served as an original contribution to information security while viewing outsourcing success from the perspective of the client, security services, and customer expectations.

Transnational dimensions of civil conflict severity

Nedrebo, Oystein 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Political Science. International Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In an otherwise broad literature on civil conflict little attention has so far been paid to actual conflict violence and variation in severity. Existing work is also hampered by a reliance on a ‘closed polity’ model of the state, leading to disregard of the transnational dimensions of internal conflict, and by a dependence on over‐aggregated data. The present inquiry expands on the existing explanatory framework for variation in civil conflict severity by including transnational factors and characteristics of sub‐national actors. Data on conflict battle deaths are combined with recently available data on transnational ethnic linkages, transnational support and neighbouring conflict as well as other actor and country characteristics. Results from ordinary least squares regression analysis indicate that support for rebel groups from external non‐state actors increase conflict severity, while rebel presence in other states is associated with less severe conflicts. In addition, severity increases with duration but with a diminishing marginal return. Internal armed conflicts are less severe in democratic and ethnically polarised countries but rebel territorial control increases the level of violence.

A Theoretical Model for Telemedicine : Social and Value Outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa

Kifle Gelan, Mengistu January 2006 (has links)
<p>The Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region is faced with limited medical personnel and healthcare services to address the many healthcare problems of the region. Poor health indicators reflect the overall decline in socio-economic development. Shortages of access to health services in the region is further complicated by the concentration of health services in urban areas, the region’s multiple medical problems (over 70% of HIV/AIDS cases in the world); and the brain drain phenomenon – it is estimated one-third of African physicians emigrate to North America and Europe. The result is that the SSA region is left with about 10 physicians, and 20 beds, per 100,000 patients. Telemedicine has been found to offer socio-economic benefits, reduce costs, and improve access to healthcare service providers by patients, but previous attempts to move various information technologies from developers in the industrial world to the developing world have failed because of a clear neglect of infrastructural and cultural factors that influence such transfers. The objective of this study is to address key factors that challenge the introduction of telemedicine technology into the health sector in SSA in particular, and by extension, other developing countries with similar socio-economic structures.</p><p>This research offers a distinctive perspective, focusing on visually-based clinical applications in the SSA region, and considerable attention to the national infrastructure and cultural impact of telemedicine transfer (social and value) outcomes. Two research models and its associated hypotheses are proposed and empirically tested using quantitative data collected from SSA physicians and other health professionals. The study also contributes to the ongoing debate on the potential of telemedicine in improving access and reducing costs. This research can help to understand the socio-economic impact of telemedicine outcomes in a comprehensive way. The finding from the survey shows the rapid advances in telemedicine technology specifically, visual clinical applications may become an essential healthcare tool in the near future within SSA countries.</p>
