Stakeholder Analysis as a tool  for working with  Social Responsibility : Developing a stakeholder analysis  method for ISO 26000

<p>This thesis aims to develop a stakeholder analysis method for the upcoming standard on social  responsibility  (SR)  ISO  26000. The  goal  is  a method  that,  by  adhering  to  three criteria regarding comprehensibility, flexibility and ease of use, can be used and applied by organizations regardless of type (corporation, NGO, municipality etc.) and value chain size. The method consists of  six different  steps which, when completed, will produce a situation map of the organization’s key SR issues and stakeholders for those issues.   The  method  is  practically  applied  and  perfected  through  two  case  studies  on  the respective Swedish  branches  of  the Nordic  corporations  ICA  (grocery  store  chain)  and Eniro  (online and printed  information  services. Although  sharing  similar characteristics in organization size, there are big differences in value chain size and services provided.  The study contributes to providing practical experience with stakeholder analysis for ISO 26000 and as a point of departure  for  further  studies on how  to  identify key  issues and stakeholders;  the  generalizability  of  the  results  suggests  applicability  not  just  for  ISO 26000 but for other preconditions as well.  The results of  the case studies suggest  that  the model developed fulfils  the  three criteria set up for  it,  thus having great practical value for all kinds of organizations  that want  to work with ISO 26000. It is suggested that the model could be improved by applying it on organizations dissimilar to the ones used in the case studies in this thesis, and fine tuning it to those organization’s specific resources and needs.</p>

A Stakeholder Analysis of the Creation of High Seas Marine Protected Areas within the Antarctic Treaty System

This study evaluates the utility of stakeholder analysis for understanding the relationships among actors involved in creating a marine protected area (MPA) in the Southern Ocean. It relies on the Australian Centre of Excellence on Risk Analysis (ACERA) method of critical stakeholder analysis, a concise, step-by-step model to identify stakeholders, assess their perceptions and values, and reveal power relations. The study uses the first two steps of the ACERA method to analyze stakeholders—in this case individuals speaking on behalf of organizations—within the Australian delegation of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) concerning the establishment of an MPA in the Southern Ocean. The study reveals both benefits and weaknesses in the ACERA method. It also portrays conflicting views among these stakeholders, and that the process of identifying and analyzing stakeholder interests is highly complex and dynamic. / Master of Science

The tourism sector, development policy and inequalities in the development of the Eastern Cape

This study on the relations between tourism policies and the tourism development conditions in the Eastern Cape of South Africa is a contribution to the on-going research projects on the transformation that has taken place in the post-1994 development process of South Africa. One theme associated with these studies relates to the important roles that have been played by public bodies in influencing the nature of the transformation in the development of South Africa. The study is based on the expectation that the current policies can open up more investments and other opportunities in the tourism sector to the benefit of the provincial economy. To find out the concrete nature of the changes associated with the current tourism development policies, data collection was organized from six groups of stakeholders in the tourism sector of the 39 local municipalities of the Eastern Cape Province. The use of factor analysis led to the identification of five hierarchies or clusters indicating the levels of inequalities in the tourism development of the province. To obtain an understanding of the processes behind the observed inequalities, the stakeholders were given the opportunity to disclose their concrete activities as they related to the policies. The findings indicate that generally, much has changed since 1994, as a result of the levelling of the playing field in the tourism sector for both the producers and consumers in the industry. It is recommended, however, that measured in terms of the maximum benefits that could be derived from the provincial tourism sector, the government officials associated with the tourism sector in particular need to provide more effective leadership in the implementation of the current tourism development policies. The thrust of the study is that the tourism policies in the Eastern vii Cape can only generate the maximum positive benefits if, inter alia, all the stakeholders in the tourism industry are empowered to produce at their maximum. / Geography / (D. <p><strong><em>Research Question</em></strong><strong><em>:</em></strong> Can organizations truly create value for all its stakeholders simultaneously, without a significant trade-off from one group to another? And what role does current ICT infrastructure play?<strong> </strong></p><p><strong><em>Purpose:</em></strong> This study is aimed at determining how organizations create value simultaneously for stakeholders without a trade-off, and also examine the role of ICT (Information and communication technologies) in balancing responsibility in trying to satisfying all stakeholders (customers, suppliers, society, environment, employees and shareholders) in complex ICT environments.</p><p><strong><em>Methodology:</em></strong> The study involves business organizations in Sweden. A research questionnaire was sent to one thousand five hundred top level management executives in Swedish based business organizations, to collect data.  Business organizations were carefully selected to cut across many industry sectors.</p><p><strong><em>Findings:</em></strong><strong> </strong>Some of the findings includes: that many companies in Sweden still have a hard time satisfying all stakeholders simultaneously without trade-off, even with the huge ICT infrastructures. We discovered that although companies invest a lot on ICT, but the combination of strategy which will bring corporate partnership and create value for all without “robbing Peter to pay Paul” is still lacking.</p><p><strong><em>Research Limitations:</em></strong><strong> </strong>First, the study was limited to Sweden because of lack of resources to conduct interviews in many countries. Thus, there is the need to exercise caution in generalising these findings. Mining and Sustainability? Systems and Stakeholder Analyses of Uranium Mining in Namibia

Roughly 10% of the Namibian GDP and over 40% of total exports are dependent on themining sector. Namibia is one of the five leading uranium producing countries worldwide withperspectives to triple the production in the following years. This study aims to identify the implicationsto sustainable development of the country carried by such a strategy to stimulate the economic growth.The complexity of the issue is addressed by an interdisciplinary set of methods leading to a betterunderstanding of processes linking uranium mining in Namibia with the environment, society and theglobal economy. Regulatory, trade and production systems are outlined and assessed, after which astakeholder analysis is conducted in order to determine who are the most influential actors as well asparties affected by the uranium production in Namibia. The results reveal a great dependence of the Namibian uranium mining sector on external factors, with the government perceived as the most affected stakeholder.

This thesis is focused on the issue of tourism planning within the context of sustainable competitive advantage which can be reached by an engagement of regional stakeholders into the phase of strategy implementation. Its aim is to evaluate cooperation between regional destination management organization and destination's stakeholders during the implementation process of strategic priorities defined in the Tourism Development Strategy in the South Bohemia Region. The thesis utilizes information from representatives of the destination management organization and regional stakeholders to be able to realize so-called Stakeholder analysis. It analyses the destination stakeholders from the point of view of free key attributes. It also pays its attention to the forms of their involvement in the planning of tourism development and their experience with this process. On this basis it formulates the basis for future actions which should lead to an improvement of the current state of cooperation with key regional stakeholders.

There are diverse participants in the student housing development in campus KTH, in which everyone plays a role and has his own claim and influence.  The stakeholder theory provides a pluralistic perspective and various analyzing techniques to get a better understanding of the question “who or what really matters” in the student housing development process.    The aim of this paper is to conduct an empirical stakeholder analysis for the student accommodation projects in campus KTH. The research work is done using stakeholder definitions and analysis techniques derived from relevant literature, based on the stakeholder data gained directly and indirectly form interview informants and open sources.  In the analysis, the author firstly attempts to identify—and map out—the student housing project’s stakeholders and their “stake”, influence and claims. The prioritizing of stakeholders is then studied based on the stakeholder information aforementioned, using Mitchell etc’s (1997) salience class model. The interactions between multi-stakeholders are also revealed to interpret their joint influence on various development activities. Finally, a framework of engagement strategies towards individual stakeholders in different stages is formed by the author, aiming to provide implications for the stakeholder management of the student housing projects.  The conclusion of this study summarizes the main findings of the stakeholder analysis. Considering subjectivity is the most noticeable limitation in this study, it is suggested that future studies focus more on the relatively objective evaluation of importance of stakeholders. Questionnaire may be a feasible method to gather reliable information and stakeholder analysis techniques derived from the literature can provide guidance to decrease bias in stakeholder evaluation and analysis / Det finns flera olika deltagare för utvecklingen av studentbostäder på campus KTH, där alla spelar en egen roll och har sina egna krav och inflytande. Intressentteorin tillhandahåller ett pluralistiskt perspektiv och diverse analystekniker för att få en bättre förståelse i frågan "Vem eller vad är verkligen avgörande" i utvecklingsprocessen för studentbostäder.  Syftet med denna uppsats är att genomföra en empirisk intressentanalys för studentboende projekten på campus KTH. Forskningsarbetet görs med hjälp av intressentanalysstekniker härledda från litteraturen, baserat på intressentdata som erhållits direkt och indirekt från intervjuinformanter och öppna källor. I analysen försöker författaren identifiera och kartlägga studentboende projektens intressenter och deras "stake", inflytande och påståenden. Prioritering av intressenter studeras sedan baserat på intressentinformationen ovan, med hjälp av Mitchell etcs (1997) salience-klassmodell. Samspelet mellan flera intressenter visas också på för att tolka deras gemensamma påverkan på olika utvecklingsaktiviteter. Slutligen bildas en ram av engagemangsstrategier mot enskilda intressenter i olika etapper av författaren, som syftar till att ge konsekvenser för intressenthanteringen av studentboende projekten. Slutsatsen av denna studie sammanfattar de viktigaste resultaten av intressentanalysen.  Att ta hänsyn till subjektivitet är den mest märkbara begränsningen i denna studie, framtida studier föreslås fokuserar mer på den relativt objektiva utvärderingen av intressenternas betydelse. Frågeformuläret kan vara en genomförbar metod för att samla tillförlitlig information och intressentanalys tekniker som är erhållna från litteraturen kan ge vägledning för att minska partiskhet i bedömning och analys av intressenter.
