Stormtroopers Among Us: Star Wars Costuming, Connection, and Civic Engagement

Simpson, Dava L. 07 April 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the bonds that form between people as consumers of popular visual media and to discuss the relationship and impact of the resulting subcultures on the larger culture. Star Wars costumers offer a magnified glance at some of the ways in which people engage with images. As reflections of popular culture, costumers display their textual devotions and opinions; they embody spectatorship by reincarnating their favorite characters and contexts from text-bound sources. Moreover, they embrace modes of visual representation by performing the roles of both image consumer and image producer. I strive to understand the activities shared by audiences after the viewing experience is over; they are highly articulate interpreting media texts in a variety of interesting and unexpected ways. Whether they impart opinions or pursue alternative relationships with some aspect of the text, people do form communities and celebrate their connections to visual texts. As fans, individuals appropriate movie materials to fulfill personal goals and build social connections. While not all-encompassing, these smaller communities say a lot about the social impact of movies---the impact of images on individuals. This thesis combines an ethnographic study of Star Wars costumers within a theoretical framework of cultural studies and performance to investigate the ways in which media images impact individuals. In documenting events from the perspective of the costumer, I seek to understand the costumer as a member of a visual audience, a reflection of popular culture, and a participant in the dominant culture.

Silveira, Stefanie Carlan da January 2010 (has links)
The convergence culture includes the technological issue of the content flow going through multiple media and the issues of changes in public behavior which appropriates itself of the digital networks seeking for different experiences of entertainment and information. The individuals look for a media product that doesn‟t finish itself in its own exhibition, but propose content that go beyond a single distribution device and require the engagement of the audience to actually happen. The fans are central characters in the change of mass media operating way because they are pioneers in adapting the new technologies of communication and information and in participatory processes of production and consumption. From this, this research seeks a look at the interactions that are part of the behavior of fans, both in relations between them and with the media industry. To this end, the Star Wars fans are studied, more specifically, the members of the Jedi Council of Rio Grande do Sul (CJRS), so that through a consolidated and permanent empirical object, it became possible to investigate the behavior of this group in the convergence culture context where the interactions between them and the media market are changed.

Some of these projects may be called according to what was proposed by the researcher Henry Jenkins of transmedia storytelling and they are those types in which it is expanded the way of telling a story for the use of the most different types of existing media. One of the most successful cases of this kind of transmedia storytelling, which may even be considered a paradigm for this type of narrative is the case of Star Wars saga. Started in the year of 1976 with the release of Star Wars: from the adventures of Luke Skywalker, this saga have been developed for years and still is in the active. It has turned into a complex universe of films, cartoons, comics, ga mes and countless books that help to narrate the most diverses adventures, that happen in a galaxy, far, far away. Considering that the today revenue of the Star Wars saga is around fourty billion dollars and that of this amount, approximately, three billion dollars had came from the commercialization of books, it becomes interesting and necessary to investigate and to understand why there is the interest in a literature production, linked to this type of narrative, as well as to seek the knowledge of how to think about projects that are part of the entertainment industry, which encompass different media, and among them the literary media and that can become a success of audience.

Larsson, Henrik January 2017 (has links)

Mediating Science Fiction Film through Translation and Commentary: The Star Wars Episode 'Attack of the Clones' in Kiswahili

Böhme, Claudia 11 September 2019 (has links)
The mediation of foreign films for Swahili audiences is an established cultural and linguistic practice in Tanzania that combines translation with commentary and story-telling. It helps audiences make sense of films whose original language and cultural background are unfamiliar to them. Today, an industry has grown around translated foreign films of all genres and from all regions. The practice also makes genres accessible that are still under-represented in Tanzanian film production, such as science fiction. The genre’s depiction of a futuristic, technically advanced and strange world presents a challenge to commentators. Through the analysis of a particular episode of the Star Wars saga, I show how the commentator acts as an ethnodramaturg, who through translation, re-narration and intertextual reference explains and re-enacts the strange cultural universe of the source film and brings it closer to the audience.
