Dhuyvetter / The 2008 National Stocker Survey defines the backgrounding/stocking of cattle as ―operations where calves are grown after weaning and/or preconditioning but before the feedlot. This includes calves purchased for this purpose as well as those retained by cow-calf producers post-weaning, but before marketing or retention through the feedlot. Backgrounding offers many benefits to farmers including, but not limited to, adding value to their feedstuffs—hay, grain, etc.—by feeding it to their cattle and potentially spreading risk by increasing marketing time or engaging in contracts with feedlots. However, producers also take on increased costs as it takes more time to wean, bunk-train, vaccinate, etc. compared to other operations in the cattle industry.
This thesis attempts to analyze two studies using the 2008 National Stocker Survey. The first is how producer and operation characteristics—producer age, type of operation, income derived from backgrounding—relate to why producers find variables such as cattle prices, animal health management, marketing practices, and nutrition important. The second is how producer and operation characteristics relate to producers that use futures market contracts and options on futures. Binary and ordered logit models were used to find the statistical significance of the aforementioned studies.Since this survey was specifically designed to profile the stocking/backgrounding industry, some of the estimated models did not add a lot of value beyond the summary statistics for the various dependent variables. That is, the ordered logit models did not identify any strong relationships given that almost all of the producers that responded to these questions found feeder cattle prices, animal health management, marketing practices, and nutrition very important, which can be seen by analyzing the summary statistics. In addition, the binary logit
models that were used for the futures market contract and options on futures models, found that the best way to pinpoint producers using either futures contracts or options was if producers were already using risk management strategies. Therefore, the survey’s purpose of profiling the stocker industry may be its best use.

The Impacts of Species, Physiological Age and Spacing on Tree Form and BranchingNaylor, Sarah January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examined the impact of species, physiological age and spacing on tree form and branching at a Nelder experiment located near Rolleston, Canterbury. Two species were compared, Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus nitens, at a range of stockings from 271 stems/ha to 40,466 stems/ha. Within the P. radiata, two different physiological ages were compared.
Stocking and species significantly affected (p-value <0.05) tree height, diameter at breast height (DBH), crown depth, branch mortality, branch angle, branch size and internode length. Only stocking was statistically significant for crown width, and height from the ground was also statistically significant for branch angle and branch mortality.
DBH, crown width, crown depth, branch size and branch survival decreased with increasing stocking for both species. Branch angle and average internode length increased as stocking increased for both species, and branch angle and average internode length also increased as you moved away from the base of the tree. DBH, average internode length and branch size were significantly larger for P. radiata across all stockings, however branch mortality and branch angle were significantly larger for E. nitens.
Physiological age was not statistically significant for any aspects of tree form or branching examined in this study.

14 pp. / A primary expression of stocking levels on rangeland vegetation is utilization defined as the proportion or degree of current years forage production that is consumed or destroyed by animals (including insects). Utilization may refer either to a single plant species, a group of species, or the vegetation as a whole. Utilization is an important factor in influencing changes in the soil, water, animal, and vegetation resources. The impact of a specific intensity of use on a plant species is highly variable depending on past and present use, period of use, duration of use, inter-specific competition, weather, availability of soil moisture for regrowth, and how these factors interact. Utilization data can be used as a guideline for moving livestock within an allotment with due consideration to season, weather conditions and the availability of forage and water in pastures scheduled for use during the same grazing season. In combination with actual use and climatic data, utilization measurements on key areas and utilization pattern mapping are useful for estimating proper stocking levels under current management. Utilization studies are helpful in identifying key and problem areas, and in identifying range improvements needed to improve livestock distribution.

Effects of past grazing management on songbirds and plants in rested pastures: the potential for grazing management to influence habitat in the landscape following livestock exclusionFischer, Samantha 20 September 2016 (has links)
Grasslands are the most threatened terrestrial ecosystem in the world, and as they decline the species that depend on them also decline. Variable stocking rates and resting rangeland could be used by range managers to manipulate plant cover and create wildlife habitat. I used generalized linear mixed-models to evaluate how effects of rest on vegetation and songbirds varied based stocking rates previously applied from 2006-2014 in Grasslands National Park, Canada. My results indicate, in the mixed-grass prairie, succession is retrogressive following rest, and both vegetation and songbirds are resilient to grazing. Recovery of songbirds was linked to the recovery of habitat structure. Songbirds with flexible habitat requirements, such as Savannah and grasshopper sparrows, responded rapidly to livestock exclusion. The retrogressive nature of succession in mixed-grass prairie offers managers an opportunity to take chances when attempting to create wildlife habitat with livestock grazing, as risk of irreversible change is relatively low. / October 2016

Management Practices and Communication Strategies to Improve Milk Fat and Protein Content on Dairy FarmsWoolpert, Melissa Elizabeth 01 January 2016 (has links)
Dairy farmers in the Northeastern Unites States are paid based on the amount of fat and protein in their cows' milk, and improving fat and protein production is linked with improved financial sustainability for dairy farms. However, not all farmers are motivated to make changes to increase milk fat and protein production. Previous research has identified a positive correlation between a group of fatty acids, known as the de novo fatty acids, and the fat and protein content of bulk tank milk from commercial dairy farms. Therefore, the first objective of this research was to explore the relationship of farm management, the cow's diet, and lactation performance with de novo fatty acid content on Northeastern US dairy farms. Results from the first objective were communicated with dairy farmers; therefore, the second objective was to understand how to communicate with farmers to influence their behavior. We hypothesized that farms with high de novo fatty acids in bulk tank milk would manage and feed their cows to optimize rumen fermentation conditions.
The first (Chapter 2) and second (Chapter 3) studies were methodologically very similar. Farms were categorized as either high de novo (HDN) or low de novo (LDN) based on the concentration of de novo fatty acids in their bulk tank milk for the 6 months prior to the farm visit. Farms were then visited once in March or April, 2014 (Chapter 2) or between February and April, 2015 (Chapter 3) to assess management practices and collect samples of the cows' diet.
There were no differences in days in milk in Chapter 2 or Chapter 3. Yield of milk, fat, and true protein per cow were higher for HDN versus LDN farms in Chapter 2. In both chapters, HDN farms had higher milk fat and true protein content and higher de novo fatty acid yield per day. The HDN farms had lower freestall stocking density in Chapter 2 and provided more feedbunk space per cow in Chapter 3. Additionally, tiestall feeding frequency was higher for HDN than LDN farms. No differences were detected for dietary chemical composition, except ether extract was lower for HDN than LDN farms in both chapters.
Chapter 4 explored how to communicate the results of Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 through eleven qualitative, semi-structured interviews and insight from the 83 farm visits. Farmers identified the cooperative, expert consultants (nutritionist, veterinarian, and agronomists), financial advisers, print publications, and other farmers as principal sources of information. However, barriers to the transfer of information included family dynamics, lack of access to high speed internet, and difficulties evaluating divergent recommendations from experts. Several farmers expressed an incorrect perception of their farms' fat and protein production compared with cooperative averages which reduced their motivation to incorporate management changes. Recommendations to overcome these barriers include integrating management team meetings and facilitating informal discussion groups between farmers.
This research is correlational in nature, and future research is needed to verify a causal relationship between de novo fatty acids and milk fat and protein content. However, the results of this research can be used to help farmers increase their cows' milk fat and protein content, improve the transfer of knowledge to dairy farmers, and ultimately support the financial sustainability of dairy farms in the Northeastern US.

The tench Tinca tinca (Linnaeus, 1758) is a valued table fish native to Europe and Asia, but which is now widely distributed in many temperate freshwater regions of the world as the result of human-mediated translocations. Spatial genetic analysis applied to sequence data from four unlinked loci (introns of three nuclear genes and mitochondrial DNA) defined two groups of populations that were little structured geographically but were significantly differentiated from each other, and it identified locations of major genetic breaks, which were concordant across genes and were driven by distributions of two major phylogroups. This pattern most reasonably reflects isolation in two principal glacial refugia and subsequent range expansions, with the Eastern and Western phylogroups remaining largely allopatric throughout the tench range. However, this phylogeographic variation was also present in European cultured breeds and some populations at the western edge of the native range contained the Eastern phylogroup. Thus, natural processes have played an important role in structuring tench populations, but human-aided dispersal have also contributed significantly, with the admixed genetic composition of cultured breeds most likely contributing to the introgression. Esse estudo foi composto por dois experimentos, o primeiro referente ao pastejo durante o período de verão e outono cujo objetivo foi avaliar a resposta de duas espécies forrageiras (capim-marandu e capim-mombaça) com doses crescentes de adubação. O segundo correspondeu ao período seco, quando os animais foram confinados com objetivo de avaliar a suplementação da silagem de cana-de-açúcar com duas fontes proteicas (farelo de soja e farelo de algodão) no desempenho animal de três categorias (vaca, novilha e bezerro). O estudo foi conduzido no Laboratório de Pesquisas em Gado de Corte (LPGC), da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, campus Pirassununga. Para o experimento 1, a área experimental foi composta por 12 ha, divididos em oito módulos de pastejo (4 para o capim-marandu e 4 para o capim-mombaça), sendo utilizados 2 módulos como reserva, e cada módulo foi composto por 6 piquetes. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 2x3 sendo duas espécies forrageiras (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu e Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça) e três doses de adubação por ciclo de pastejo, totalizando 42, 333 e 667 kg de N e K2O ha-1 para o capim-marandu e 50, 400 e 800 kg de N e K2O ha-1 para o capim-mombaça, avaliados durante o verão e outono. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características: altura de entrada e saída das forrageiras, período de descanso, taxa de lotação, composição bromatológica de folha e colmo, relação folha/colmo/material morto e desempenho dos animais em pastejo. Para avaliação do desempenho animal, foram utilizadas 60 novilhas da raça Nelore, divididas nas seis unidades experimentais. Para ajuste da taxa de lotação, foram utilizadas vacas e novilhas do rebanho LPGC. No experimento 2 os animais foram alocados nas áreas de lazer, dos módulos de pastejo. A alimentação foi composta por silagem de cana-de-açúcar e duas fontes proteicas (farelo de soja ou farelo de algodão), sendo a relação volumoso:concentrado de 80:20. Os animais receberam alimentação ad libitum uma vez ao dia e os animais foram pesados a cada 21 dias a fim de avaliar o desempenho individual. De maneira geral, o incremento na dose de adubação aumentou linearmente (P<0,05) a altura de entrada, altura de saída, período de descanso, taxa de lotação (6,0 até 10,5 UA ha-1), PB, Lig/FDN, DIVMS, DIVFDN, proporção de colmo, e reduziu o teor de MS e folhas. O capim-mombaça apresentou menor período de descanso e teor de Lig/FDN, e maior teor de MM, FDN e Lig/FDN (P<0,05) em relação ao capim-marandu. Na estação de verão houve um aumento na altura de entrada, no teor de FDN, Lig/FDN e redução no teor de PB, DIVMS e DIFDN. Para o desempenho animal, não houve diferença entre doses de adubação (P=0,55) e espécie forrageira (P=0,07), sendo média de 0,850 kg dia-1. A suplementação com fontes proteicas apresentou efeito para a interação categoria*tratamento no CMS (P=0,03), sendo que vacas alimentadas com farelo de soja tiveram maior CMS em comparação às alimentadas com farelo de algodão. O desempenho animal não foi influenciado pelas fontes proteicas (P=0,10), no entanto houve efeito para categoria animal (P<0,05), sendo 0,677, 0,416 e 0,244 kg dia-1 para vacas novilhas e bezerros. Portanto, o uso de doses crescentes de adubação e o confinamento das categorias de cria permitiu o aumento na eficiência do uso da terra. / This study consisted of two experiments, the first referring to rotational grazing system during the summer and fall that aimed to evaluate the response of two forage species (marandugrass and mombaça) with increasing doses of fertilizer. The second corresponded to dry season, when animals were confined to evaluate the supplementation with sugarcane silage with two protein sources (soybean meal and cottonseed meal) on animal performance of animal three categories (cow, heifer and calf). The study was conducted at the Laboratory of Research in Beef Cattle (LPGC), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of São Paulo, campus Pirassununga. For the experiment 1, the experimental area was composed of 12 ha, divided into eight grazing modules (4 for marandugrass and 4 for mombaça), 2 of these modules were used as reservation. The design was a randomized complete block in factorial arrangement of treatments 2 x 3 with 2 forage species (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu and Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça) and 3 fertilizer levels by grazing cycle, totalying 42, 333 and 667 kg N and K2O ha-1 for Marandu grass and 50, 400 and 800 kg N and K2O ha-1 for Mombaça grass evaluated during the summer and fall. The following characteristics were evaluated: pre and post-grazing sward height of forage, grazing interval, stocking rate, chemical composition of leaf and stem, leaf/stem/dead material ratio and performance of grazing animals. For evaluation of animal performance, we used 60 Nellore heifers, divided into six experimental units. To adjust the stocking rate, cows and heifers, from LPGC herd, were used. In experiment 2 the animals were kept at the resting areas of grazing modules. The feed consisted of sugarcane silage and two protein sources (soybean meal or cottonseed meal), at a forage-to-concentrate ratio 80:20. The animals were fed ad libitum once daily and weighed every 21 days to assess individual performance. Overall, the increase in the dose of fertilizer increased linearly (P < 0.05) the pre and post-grazing sward height, grazing interval, stocking rate (6.0 to 10.5 AU ha-1), PB, Lig/NDF, IVDMD, IVNDFD, stem content, and reduced DM content and leaves. The mombaça showed lower grazing interval and Lig/NDF content and higher MM content, NDF and Lig/NDF (P < 0.05) compared to brachiaria grass. In the summer season there was an increase in the pre-grazing sward height, NDF, Lig/NDF and reduced CP content and IVDMD and IVNDFD. For the animal performance, there was not differences between fertilization doses (P = 0.55) and forage specie (P = 0.07), the ADG was 0.850 kg dia-1. Supplementation with protein sources presented effect of category*treatment interaction for DMI of cows (P = 0.03), while cows fed soybean meal had higher DMI than those fed cottonseed meal. The ADG was not affected by protein sources (P = 0.10), however, there was a category effect (P < 0.05), the means was 0.677, 0.416 and 0.244 kg dia-1 for cows, heifers and calves, respectively. Therefore, the use of increasing doses of fertilizers and the feedlot of calf rearing categories increased the land use efficiency.

Na natureza, durante milhares de anos de convivência, gramíneas forrageiras e herbívoros passaram por um processo de co-evolução desenvolvendo múltiplas estratégias de sobrevivência e de adaptação. Práticas de manejo que interferem na forma como a forragem é disponibilizada aos animais (estrutura do dossel forrageiro) podem causar mudanças dos padrões de procura e ingestão de forragem e interferir com o desempenho animal. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a estrutura do dossel forrageiro e a taxa de consumo de forragem em pastos de capim-elefante cv. Napier (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) submetidos a estratégias de pastejo rotativo. O experimento foi conduzido em área da Escola Superior de Agricultura \"Luiz de Queiroz\", Piracicaba, SP, de janeiro de 2011 a abril de 2012. Os tratamentos corresponderam a combinações entre duas condições pós- (alturas pós-pastejo de 35 e 45 cm) e duas condições pré-pastejo (95% e máxima interceptação de luz pelo dossel forrageiro - IL), alocados às unidades experimentais (piquetes de 870 m²) segundo arranjo fatorial 2x2 e delineamento de blocos completos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliadas em pré- e em pós-pastejo as seguintes variáveis-resposta: distribuição vertical dos componentes morfológicos da massa de forragem dos pastos, taxa de bocados, massa do bocado, taxa de consumo e valor nutritivo da forragem consumida (composição morfológica e bromatológica de amostras de extrusa).A estrutura do dossel influenciou fortemente a massa do bocado, a taxa de bocados e a taxa de consumo independente de tratamento e época do ano. Em pré-pastejo, apesar de a massa do bocado ter sido maior nos pastos manejados com a meta ILMáx, não houve diferença em taxa de consumo entre as metas de IL avaliadas, resultado da maior taxa de bocados registrada nos pastos manejados com a meta IL95%. Em pós-pastejo a taxa de consumo também não variou entre as metas de IL avaliadas, sendo observados ajustes na taxa de bocados como forma decompensar as variações em massa do bocado. As metas de altura pós-pastejo modificaram a composição morfológica e bromatológica da forragem consumida, as quais variaram também em função da época do ano. De maneira geral, pastos manejados com a meta IL95% e altura pós-pastejo de 45 cm resultaram em maior porcentagem de folhas na extrusa, o que conferiu melhor taxa de consumo e valor nutritivo da forragem consumida pelos animais em pastejo. / In nature, during thousands of year of co-existence, forage grasses and herbivores underwent a co-evolution process that resulted in multiple survival strategies and adaptations. Management practices that interfere with the way forage is presented to animals (sward structure) may cause changes in patterns of search and consumption of herbage, affecting animal performance. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate sward structure and rate of herbage intake of rotationally stocked elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureumSchum., cv. Napier). The experiment was carried out at Escola Superior de Agricultura \"Luiz de Queiroz\", Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, from January 2011 to April 2012. Treatments corresponded to combinations between two post- (post-grazing heights of 35 and 45 cm) and two pre-grazing swards conditions (95% and maximum canopy light interception - LI), and were allocated to experimental units (870 m2 paddocks) according to a 2x2 factorial arrangement in a complete randomised block design, with four replications. The following response variables were evaluated in both pre- and post-grazing conditions: vertical distribution of morphological components of sward herbage mass, bite rate, bite mass, rate of intake and nutritive value of the consumed herbage (morphological and chemical composition of extrusa samples). Sward structure strongly influenced bite mass, bite rate and rate of intake regardless of treatment and season of the year. At pre-grazing, in spite of the larger bite mass on swards managed with the pre-grazing target LIMax, there was no difference in rate of intake between LI targets, consequence of the higher bite rate recorded on swards managed with the pre-grazing target LI95%. At post-grazing, there was no difference in rate of intake between LI targets, with variations in bite rate used to compensate variations in bite mass. Post-grazing targets altered the morphological and chemical composition of the consumed herbage, which also varied with season of the year. Overall, swards managed with the pre-grazing target LI95% and the 45 cm post-grazing height resulted in larger percentage of leaves in the extrusa, favouring higher rates of intake and nutritive value of the herbage consumed.

O estresse causa modificações no epitélio intestinal, tais como o aumento de células caliciformes e da taxa de apoptose. O uso de alimentos nutracêuticos tem sido uma alternativa para amenizar essas modificações sobre o tecido epitelial. Desta forma, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar se a inclusão de colostro bovino, o qual é constituído de fatores antioxidantes, imunes e de crescimento, seria capaz de amenizar as consequências do estresse crônico sob o intestino. Para isso, juvenis de pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) adensados a 50 kg/m3 foram alimentados duas vezes ao dia até a saciedade com ração peletizada e semi-purificada sem (0%CBL) e com a inclusão de colostro bovino liofilizado em concentrações crescentes (10, 20 e 30%CBL), (n=4). Após 28 dias, foram coletados segmentos do intestino médio, S1 e S2, e reto. Os tecidos foram marcados com corantes histológicos para a quantificação de células caliciformes contendo mucinas neutras, ácidas (incluindo sialo e sulfomucinas) e ácidas-neutras. Também foram mensurados o volume (Vv) e a densidade da superfície (Sv) da mucosa, por análise estereológica, e a espessura da camada muscular. A razão do número de cada tipo e subtipo de célula caliciforme sobre o Vv e Sv foi calculada para estimar a densidade de células caliciformes, Dv e Ds, respectivamente. A taxa apoptótica foi analisada qualitativamente através da intensidade (alta, média e baixa) da imunomarcação da caspase-3 nas células epiteliais. As dietas não influenciaram os parâmetros zootécnicos analisados (P>0,05). No reto, os grupos que receberam 20 e 30%CBL apresentaram menor número de células caliciformes contendo sulfomucinas e menor Ds em relação a 0 e 10% (P=0,0148 e 0,0198, respectivamente). No RT, Dv total e Dv de células caliciformes contendo mucinas ácidas foi maior em 0 e 30%CBL em relação a 20%CBL (P=0,0155 e 0,225, respectivamente). No S1, 10 e 30%CBL apresentaram maior Dv em relação a 20%CBL (P=0,0540). A espessura da camada muscular, o Vv e a Sv não diferiram entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). No S2 e RT, a taxa de apoptose teve relação inversa à concentração de colostro bovino liofilizado adicionado na ração. Nos três segmentos, houve maior proporção de células caliciformes contendo mucinas ácidas do que neutras, sendo a maioria representada por sulfomucinas. Assim, a inclusão de colostro bovino liofilizado nas rações de juvenis de pacu adensados diminuiu a apoptose nos segmentos intestinais S2 e RT e também diminuiu o número de células caliciformes contendo sulfomucinas no RT, indicando que o colostro bovino liofilizado pode ser utilizado como alimento nutracêutico para pacus (Piaractus mesopotamicus) adensados, a fim de diminuir a taxa apoptótica e proteger o intestino contra enzimas bacterianas, uma das principais funções das sulfomucinas. / The stress causes changes in the intestinal epithelium, such as the increase in the number of goblet cells and on the rate of apoptosis. The use of nutraceutical foods has been an alternative to soften these modifications on the epithelial tissue. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate if the inclusion of bovine colostrum, which is composed of antioxidant, immune and growth factors, would be able to attenuate the consequences of chronic stress on the intestine. For this, pacu juveniles (Piaractus mesopotamicus), stocked at density of 50 kg/m3, were fed twice daily until satiety with pelleted and semi-purified diet without (0% LBC) and with the inclusion of lyophilized bovine colostrum in increasing concentrations (10, 20 and 30% LBC), (n = 4). After 28 days, segments of the middle gut, S1 and S2, and rectum (RT) were collected. The tissues were stained with histological dyes for the quantification of goblet cells containing neutral, acidic (including sialo and sulphomucins) and acid-neutral mucins. The volume (Vv) and surface density (Sv) of the mucosa were also measured by stereological analysis and the thickness of the muscular layer. The ratio between the number of each goblet cell type and subtype and the Vv or Sv was calculated to estimate the density of goblet cells, Dv and Ds, respectively. The apoptotic rate was analyzed qualitatively according to the intensity (high, medium and low) of caspase-3 immunostaining in epithelial cells. The diets did not influence the zootechnical parameters analyzed (P> 0.05). In the rectum, the groups that received 20 and 30% LBC presented lower number of goblet cells containing sulphomucins and lower Ds in relation to 0 and 10% (P = 0.0148 and 0.0198, respectively). In RT, total Dv and Dv of goblet cells containing acid mucins were higher in 0 and 30% LBC in relation to 20% LBC (P = 0.0155 and 0.225, respectively). In S1, 10 and 30% LBC presented higher Dv in relation to 20% LBC (P = 0.0540). Muscle layer thickness, Vv and Sv did not differ between treatments (P> 0.05). In S2 and RT, the rate of apoptosis was inversely related to the concentration of lyophilized bovine colostrum added in the diet. In the three segments, there was higher proportion of goblet cells containing acidic than neutral mucins, most of them being sulphomucins. Thus, the inclusion of lyophilized bovine colostrum in diets of pacu juveniles reduced apoptosis in the intestinal segments S2 and RT and also decreased the number of goblet-containing sulphomucins in the RT, indicating that lyophilized bovine colostrum can be used as a nutraceutical feed for pacus (Piaractus mesopotamicus) under high stocking density to decrease the apoptotic rate and protect the intestine against bacterial enzymes, one of the main functions of sulphomucins.
