Hur en stad kan använda storytelling i sin destinationsmarknadsföring : Fallstudie: Kalmar Stad

Dennisdotter, Emma January 2008 (has links)

VENI, VIDI, VIDS: TRANSFORMING CULTURAL NARRATIVES THROUGH THE ART OF AUDIOVISUAL STORYTELLING

Brownfield, Kristi 01 August 2015 (has links)
The focus of this research is “fanvids” which are the creative work of fans that combine clips or images from a visual “canon” source (usually a television series or movie) to music to create an alternative narrative. By using qualitative content analysis methods, I sampled from the television show Supernatural and the 2009 film Star Trek to understand the ways diverse characters were presented and what types of cultural narratives existed. Then I sampled from seven different vidding communities, collecting a total of 105 vids and 6509 comments on those vids as the second part of my sample. Then drawing on the sociological subfields of social psychology, gender, cultural studies, as well as the broader literatures of media and film studies, I analyzed both the data from canons and fanvids. My analysis centered on the following research questions: a) What are the cultural narratives present in the canon sources and how are those narratives rejected, accepted, replaced, or otherwise transformed within fanvids? (b) How do the narratives present within the canon source and within the vids reflect the ideologies and spirit of the culture that produces those narratives? (c) Are these vids and discussions a sign of potential change in cultural ideologies and narratives and, if so, what change is taking place? My findings within the two canons include an emphasis on a masculinity that maintains control through violence and aggression; in contrast vids reject this type of masculinity and the larger cultural narratives that support it, except when that violent masculinity is sexualized in the context of homosexual relationships. Further, vids predominantly reject the heteronormativity found in both Supernatural and Star Trek in favor of presenting queer relationships. Within this dissertation, I have used the transformation from canon to fandom as a narrative proxy for cultural change. The differences and similarities between canon and vid point to deficiencies both in narrative and in representation in the media we are producing in the U.S. as well as narratives that are stable and enduring, so much so that fans add them even when they are not present in canon. These are the stories our culture, right now, is built on; essentially, these are the narratives that are part of the cultural ideologies that reflect hopes, dreams, beliefs, and ideologies of the people within our society.

Traditional Navajo Storytelling as an Educational Strategy: Student Voices

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This mixed methods action research study explores the phenomenon of Navajo storytelling from the student perspective, exploring views of their experiences, and how those experiences and perceptions impact their learning. Navajo storytelling reflects the traditional teachings of the Dine, and serves as the foundation to character building promoting the concepts and processes of T’aa Sha Bik’ehgo Na’nitin (“sense of direction”). The design of the study supports the students’ achievement by utilizing a storytelling approach to teaching that organizes learning around the principles of critical thinking (nitshakees), planning (nahata), reasoning (iina), and creativity (sihasiin) found in the Dine educational philosophy model, Sa’ah Naaghai Bik’eh Hozhoon. Goals of this study focus on the subject of traditional storytelling, Navajo folktales, to determine how the teaching and learning influences the processes by which a student makes decisions. Through oral storytelling the teachings place priority on creating a nurturing, respectful, and culturally inclusive environment based on Diné knowledge and language. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2016

Community-based social healing approaches in South Africa: a case study of the Institute for Healing of Memories

Mwaura, Mercy Wangui January 2011 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / In this study, the researcher aim is to examine the approach to social healing used by the Institute for Healing of Memories (IHOM). The focus is to explore how the approach has been employed within the community to enhance social transformation and healing. This study comes from a most recent field of social healing which explores the ways of dealing with social ills that are caused by conflict and collective trauma. In South Africa, the majority of the population were oppressed under the apartheid regime for a period that lasted from 1948 to 1994. As a way of dealing with the ordeal after the abolition of apartheid, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was formulated. This created a space for both the perpetrator and the survivor of apartheid atrocities to have public hearings. Although the TRC contributed in laying the foundation for South Africa’s social transformation, it could not meet the population demand. To date individuals and communities in South Africa are struggling to triumph over their past experiences. IHOM is an organisation that has embarked on community healing programmes and has identified the healing needs of the communities in the Western Cape but on a small-scale, at grassroots level. The research design took the form of a case study of IHOM. A qualitative approach to the study was followed to examine the IHOM approach to social healing and the interpretation of the findings would be useful in enhancing the IHOM’s programme. In-depth interviews were used to gather data where IHOM’s facilitators and participants were interviewed. The research found out that IHOM approach is a combination of several methods including spiritual, emotional and psychological methods and that storytelling is the core feature of the approach of IHOM. The results of the research show that the approach caters for the needs of individuals who had suffered emotionally and psychologically due to exposure to traumatic conditions caused by human rights violations. With an exploration into personal narratives, participants experienced emotional relief. Therefore at the Institute for Healing of Memories making sense of one’s suffering through empathising with another is the core finding: making sense of suffering together creates an individual inner awareness of healing strength. Own feelings plus experiences become clearer. Thus the study found that there is a correlation between narrating and healing. Listening and sharing creates sentiments of connection and commonality. Also creates the possibility of empathy and in the process something happens in the spirit and a sense of transcendence emerges. These processes prepare the ground for forgiveness and reconciliation between diverse populations, races, cultures and religions.

Personal stories go worldwide: the ritual of storytelling through Weblogs.

Johnson, Janet L. 08 1900 (has links)
The once private traditional written diary is shifting to an electronic storytelling tradition. Online diaries or weblogs are a growing phenomenon that scholars have ignored until recently. This qualitative project uses narrative and rhetorical analysis to focus on storytelling themes in weblogs, rituals in storytelling and the similarities and differences from traditional written diaries. In this study, 30 weblogs were chosen from three web domains: livejournal.com, blogger.com and diarest.net. The findings show that weblogs are filled with rich storytelling that emulates many qualities of traditional diaries. In general, weblogs authors are communicating stories online to an interactive mass audience and forming new rituals in a new electronic forum.

Learning the ropes through environmental and indexical storytelling : Introducing basic mechanics as a part of the world

Elmhammar, Julia, Berg, Amanda January 2021 (has links)
Abstract Diegetic effects, non-diegetic effects, indexical and environmental storytelling in relation to tutorials, what happens when you introduce the game's mechanics with these concepts? This article examines how other games have used these concepts to introduce mechanics and game conditions. We will discuss how environmental and indexical storytelling together with diegetic and non-diegetic effects can affect the player's perception and understanding of the basic mechanics of a game space. As a result of an analysis of design examples, we investigate this through our own design.

Towards a theology of story : an experiment in contextual theology

Crowder, Roy B January 1987 (has links)
Bibliography: pages 261-275. / This study examines the role of story in the Christian proclamation. It focusses upon the dynamic of story which unites praxis and language in a single message. There are four stages of argument. The First Part examines the hermeneutic problem especially as discussed in the work of Gadamer, Palmer, Robinson, Funk and others writers on the so-called New Hermeneutic. Their views are set against the perspective of liberation and contextual theologies from Cone, Segundo, and Miguez Bonino amongst others. The impact of social praxis and context on communication and interpretation is examined. Its importance as a barrier to the translation of the whole dynamic of the gospel proclamation is stressed. Part Two examines Jesus parables and acted parables. The data comes from two sources: the dominant form-critical approach to parables as exemplified by Jeremias or Crossan, in which the situation behind the text is examined. Second is the recent sociological approach to the practice of Jesus taken by such scholars as Theissen or Echegaray. The approach to this data comes from an analysis of the "history of the transmission of the tradition", a concept developed by Pannenberg from the work of Rentdorf and Von Rad. It provides a series of categories through which the data is examined. The dynamic of story is shown in the unity of actions. Function and structure in the parabolic stories and The Third Part surveys the role of story as a category in contemporary theology. First, the approach of narrative theology is cosidered as in the work of Stroup, McClendon, McFague and others. Then the role of story in Third World theological reflection on liberation struggles is described. Examples are drawn mainly from Asia (China, Korea and the Philippines). The Latin American debate about such cultural forms is briefly reviewed. Lastly the role of story in some British contextual theology is discussed. The dynamic of story is discovered in the function and impact of stories in theological reflection in the struggle against oppressive situations. Part Four briefly notes the perspective of critical theorists, like Habermas, on hermeneutics. Finally an attempt is made to tell stories of theological reflection on domination as a practical exercise illustrating the theoretical themes of the study. The impetus for the study arises from two periods of practical experience. One of some ten years duration, was work in British inner city ministry and theological training, in a context where community groups were struggling against many manifestations of urban stress. The second period, of about half a year, was an exposure to the conditions of life in rural (communal lands) and urban (high density residential area) Zimbabwe, as a visitor to the Methodist Church. In both instances stories were a vital means of communication about the most important things.
