Thermal Flow Sensors for Intravascular Shear Stress Analysis

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This thesis investigated two different thermal flow sensors for intravascular shear stress analysis. They were based on heat transfer principle, which heat convection from the resistively heated element to the flowing fluid was measured as a function of the changes in voltage. For both sensors, the resistively heated elements were made of Ti/Pt strips with the thickness 0.12 µm and 0.02 µm. The resistance of the sensing element was measured at approximately 1.6-1.7 kohms;. A linear relation between the resistance and temperature was established over the temperature ranging from 22 degree Celsius to 80 degree Celsius and the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was at approximately 0.12 %/degree Celsius. The first thermal flow sensor was one-dimensional (1-D) flexible shear stress sensor. The structure was sensing element sandwiched by a biocompatible polymer "poly-para-xylylene", also known as Parylene, which provided both insulation of electrodes and flexibility of the sensors. A constant-temperature (CT) circuit was designed as the read out circuit based on 0.6 µm CMOS (Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) process. The 1-D shear stress sensor suffered from a large measurement error. Because when the sensor was inserted into blood vessels, it was impossible to mount the sensor to the wall as calibrated in micro fluidic channels. According to the previous simulation work, the shear stress was varying and the sensor itself changed the shear stress distribution. We proposed a three-dimensional (3-D) thermal flow sensor, with three-axis of sensing elements integrated in one sensor. It was in the similar shape as a hexagonal prism with diagonal of 1000 µm. On the top of the sensor, there were five bond pads for external wires over 500 µm thick silicon substrate. In each nonadjacent side surface, there was a bended parylene branch with one sensing element. Based on the unique 3-D structure, the sensor was able to obtain data along three axes. With computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, it is possible to locate the sensor in the blood vessels and give us a better understanding of shear stress distribution in the presence of time-varying component of blood flow and realize more accurate assessment of intravascular convective heat transfer. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Novel theory for shear stress computation in cracked reinforced concrete flexural beams

Abouelleil, AlaaEldin January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Civil Engineering / Hayder A. Rasheed / This study is conducted because of the lack of an existing theory to accurately predict the diagonal tension cracking in shallow reinforced concrete beams. A rational approach is followed to numerically derive the shear stress profile across the depth of the beam in cracked beams based on the smeared crack approach. Furthermore, the determined shear stress distribution coupled with the normal axial stress distribution are used to predict the principal stress variation across the depth and along the shear span using standard Mohr’s circle. Following a biaxial stress cracking criterion, the likely diagonal tension cracks along their orientation profile are predicted. Furthermore, this study is conducted to provide a mechanics-based understanding of the shear stress distribution in cracked reinforced concrete. This approach utilizes the transversal shear differential equation to evaluate the shear stress at any given depth by the variation of the axial stress distribution within an infinitesimal beam segment at that depth. In addition, this study presents a more accurate representation of the change in the strain profile parameters with respect to the sectional applied moment. Furthermore, the dowel action effect is derived to illustrate its significance on the shear stress distribution at various stages of loading.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Afonso Eugenio.pdf: 3225000 bytes, checksum: 3ec57b1525dae6e079bc14c912078ed8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-30 / This study evaluated lingual brackets bonding on the lingual surfaces of bicuspids with different PAD thickness, made with Transbond XT light cured resin in 1.00 m and 2.00 mm thicknesses and compared to the lowest possible thickness. The Sondhi Rapid-Set bonding adhesive was used for indirect bonding. Shear bond strength was evaluated five minutes after bonding, using a Kratos universal testing machine, with a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. The mean force of shear bond strength for Group I was 9.69 MPa (SD 4.02 MPa); 6.15 MPa (SD 2.69 MPa) for Group II; and 5.73 MPa (SD 1.62 MPa) for Group III. Group I, with lower PAD thickness, featured significantly greater shear bond strength than Groups II and III (PADs equal to 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively). The latter two groups showed no significant difference at p<0.05. Score 1 of the Adhesive Remnant Index prevailed in Groups I and II, characterizing a greater number of adhesive fractures.

[en] STRESS ANALYSIS IN SHELLS OF DOUBLE CURVATURE BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD / [pt] ANÁLISE DE TENSÕES EM CASCAS DE DUPLA CURVATURA PELO MÉTODO DOS ELEMENTOS FINITOS

ARTHUR MULLER 02 February 2012 (has links)
[en] The object of this work is the presentation of a simple triangular finite element for plates and shells. Since the rotation fields are assumed independent of the displacement fields, simple shape functions of second and third degree were used. An implicit penalty method allows one to solve thin shell problemas since the Kirchoff- Love hypothesis are automatically satisfied.

The numerical modelling of elastomers

Bayliss, Martin January 2003 (has links)
This thesis reports onreview and research work carried out on the numerical analysis of elastomers. The two numerical techniques investigated for this purpose are the finite and boundary element methods. The finite element method is studied so that existing theory is used to develop a finite element code both to review the finite element method as applied to the stress analysis of elastomers and to provide a comparison of results and numerical approach with the boundary element method. The research work supported on in this thesis covers the application of the boundary element method to the stress analysis of elastomers. To this end a simplified regularization approach is discussed for the removal of strong and hypersingularities generated in the system on non-linear boundary integral equations. The necessary programming details for the implementation of the boundary element method are discussed based on the code developed for this research. Both the finite and boundary element codes developed for this research use the Mooney-Rivlin material model as the strain energy based constitutive stress strain function. For validation purposes four test cases are investigated. These are the uni-axial patch test, pressurized thick wall cylinder, centrifugal loading of a rotating disk and the J-Integral evaluation for a centrally cracked plate. For the patch test and pressurized cylinder, both plane stress and strain have been investigated. For the centrifugal loading and centrally cracked plate test cases only plane stress has been investigated. For each test case the equivalent results for an equivalent FEM program mesh have been presented. The test results included in this thesis prove that the FE and BE derivations detailed in this work are correct. Specifically the simplified domain integral singular and hyper-singular regularization approach was shown to lead to accurate results for the test cases detailed. Various algorithm findings specific to the BEM implementation of the theory are also discussed.
