Housing projects assigned in architecture design studio are considered as an exercise having several pedagogical objectives which constitute a suitable ground of maturation for students after completing their first and second year design studio. The aim of the research is to make an overview of the way housing design projects are conducted in the third year architectural design studio at the Middle East Technical University Department of Architecture, focusing on the last five years in particular. But in the first place, the background of housing assignments is reviewed in order to understand how teaching methods and problem definitions have evolved in the past. The objectives and the learning outcomes expected from these studio exercises, the approaches and tendencies that determine the way the project exercises are examined and lastly the teaching methods, strategies and tools are studied depending on the written and visual documents related to the studio works and interviews with the studio critics.

I don’t want to set the world on fire…or do I? : playing (with) history in Fallout 3

While considering the role of media in shaping and examining histories, we must also grapple with formal limitations in approaching and understanding the past. The thesis aims to bring video games into critical conversations regarding history, memory, and nostalgia by considering the similar and unique perspectives the medium can bring alongside film, television, radio, and literature. Player positionality and interactivity within the unconventional, non-linear game storytelling form allows for different engagements with history. Focusing on the futuristic, post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout 3 (2008), this study interrogates the game’s nuanced presentation of genre as a cultural mediation of the past, the negotiation of memory with history, and our problematic assumptions about technology and narratives of progress. While the study finds games may provide rewarding and potentially critical explorations of history, the self-reflexive nature of video gaming emphasizes the medium’s possibilities, limitations, and implications as a cultural product shaped by the very forces constructing history. / text

The power of education with its range of different fields has had a dramatic impact on our world, and more and younger students graduate every year. This growth and flooding have forced institutes to expand exponentially. And with the idea of internationally recognised degrees, many institutions have changed their curriculums, and some have even changed the institution titles e.g. Durban University of technology that was once called the Durban institute of technology and also the University of Natal that is now called University of KwaZulu Natal. This change has also forced these academic institutes to expand not only in terms of number of students, but also physically, with new buildings being built and also some even change the degree titles. The aim for the new Department of Television, Performance and Staging for Durban University of Technology is to attempt to facilitate this growth and change. To facilitate these changes, the scheme is to be divided into two main aspects – to reunify the existing growth and suggest new better ways of facilitating the growth. Secondly – the new Department of Television, Performance and Staging will not only set out the new dimension in future growth but will also architecturally facilitate the existing growth and change. This dissertation will then focus on a specific department within the Faculty, which is the Department of Television, Performance and Staging which will house the existing and to be upgraded Video Technology and Drama Studies departments. The focus on this department is to explore the relationship between the university and the public engagement, to enhance and upgrade the quality of the existing department. The Department of Television, Performance and Staging tries to explore concepts in architecture – utilising Video Technology and Drama Studies as a exploratory tool for students and professionals to promote architecture to a larger audience. The basis of F.A.CE project.lon was the competition for an future Academy within the spirit of the former Bauhaus Dessau. The competition provided the opportunity to introduce my thoughts for an educational establishment in art, architecture and design. The Essence of F.A.CE project.Ion was to extend the myth of the former Bauhaus utopians. Several artists were active either together or in succession and made valueable contributions to the Bauhaus through their own work. Their names and faces are form together the multifaced image that refers silently as a memory to a former Bauhaus idea. The Identity of the Bauhaus seemed to live as much in the hidden cracks on the facades of a celebrated architecture as in the portraits of the former Bauhaus faces. Through juxtaposing the faces with the Bauhaus Idea I created an dialogue that moved toward a 'corporate identity - Mies v. d. Rohe' and found its ownF.A.CE - F.uture A.rts CE.ntre .Finally, F.A.CE project.Ion led toward a specific spirit ofplastic elements embodying facial aswell as spatial forces with an important contribution to a visual re-education. / Department of Architecture

Changing digital habits among young children have been affiliated to the rapid development, witnessed in the technological field. Prevalently, new forms of technology are being developed and ingrained into young children’s day-to-day activities. The emergence of new forms of technology has in turn prompted significant changes in digital and media consumption particularly, among young children. Changes in media and digital consumption have in turn instigated linear transition in the analogue media industries. This has resulted in analogue media networks working towards digitalizing their industries in a manner that will befit changing digital habits among young children. This report aims at establishing and analyzing the different ways in which children’s digital habits have changed and revolutionized. To achieve this, the report will critically examine the existing scope of knowledge, with reference to changing digital habits among young audiences. Further, the report also aims at establishing the manner in which children television networks have adapted to the changing digital habits among young audiences. To achieve this, the report will focus on two children television networks, Disney channel, and Nickelodeon. After which, a comparative analysis will be conducted to establish the changes made by each of these television channels, with the aim of adapting to the new digital habits among children.

Virtual Test Environment for Motion Capture Shoots

This master thesis presents the design of an implementation of a working prototype for an augmented motion capture acting environment. Motion capture (MoCap), the recording of movements to be applied to characters or objects in computer graphics simulations, is widely used in video games, advertisement, and cinema. MoCap is realized through different techniques, where one common problem is the efficiency to capture actor’s motion performances. To capture motions without obstacles for the motion detectors, actors act blindly, without graphic references while acting. Mistakes or a poor correlation between the actors performances and the computer graphics simulation requires the scene either to be taken many times or to be corrected afterwards in time-consuming post-production. These issues slow down the production process or lead to a low quality product.We suggest that one way to limit the problem of efficiency in motion capture is to let actors perform in a virtual environment. To this end, this master thesis presents a simple prototypeenvironment with the goal to support actors’ performances to improve motion capture efficiency. The idea is to surround an actor with four screens which display the virtual environment. A Microsoft Kinect camera is utilized for motion capture. Gestures are usedto trigger interactions between the actor and the virtual environment. Furthermore, the thesis explores the applicability of open source libraries, game engines, and inexpensivegeneral purpose technology. We suggest, as indicated by demonstrated validity, that virtual environments and augmented motion capture improve the conditions for actors, thus providing more efficient motion capture shots. However, further research and quantitative measurements are needed to understand and fully evaluate the effect of the presented prototype tool.

Jaws(Universal Studios, 1975) set a new standard for Hollywood film production byintroducing the concept of “summer blockbuster,” for a film that changed the way inwhich people thought about sharks. 37 years after the release of the movie, the idea of sharks as ferocious man-hunters still looms large in public opinion. Thisconceptualization of sharks as ruthless killers is mythical rather than factual, and thisresearch tracks the mechanisms that propelled the idea deep into popular culture.The dissertation addresses the problematics of media constructions through a casestudy of the movie Jawsdeparting from its production process, and by applyingBarbara Klinger’s interpretation of “epiphenomena.” The thesis studies how cinematravels into popular culture, by following the traces of the movie into other media, andits dialogue with the surrounding texts generated by PR, marketing andmerchandising; simultaneously, the thesis seek to demonstrate the connection between the movie as mythmaker and the stigmatized portrayal of sharks.

Diploma thesis "Perception of Czechoslovakian cinematography by German film periodicals between 1933 - 1945" deals with the Czech film industry as it was received by German specialized press with an emphasis on the recognition of changes, that took place after the formation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The period is divided into two stages. The first, 1933 to March 15, 1939 and the second, March 16, 1939 to May 1945, when the end of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was proclaimed. Historical events determined the path of Czech cinematography and later protectoral cinematography (Slovak cinematography was not developed at the time). These events are specified in the thesis as well as the Czech film industry in terms of local and foreign production, distribution, film - makers and organizations. A lot of news from Czech lands was published in the German press due to close connections between Czech and German cinematography which was only further interconnected after the formation of the Protectorate. The analytical portion comprises a historical comparison of texts from daily Der Film - Kurier, weekly Der Film and monthly Der deutsche Film.
