Global mindset e fatores culturais: influências nas competências de subsidiárias brasileiras no exterior: pesquisa multinível / Global mindset and culture factors: influences on Brazilian foreign subsidiaries´ competences. A multilevel research.

Reis, Germano Glufke 04 April 2012 (has links)
This study examined the influences of global mindset (GM) and cultural characteristics (power distance and uncertainty avoidance) of Brazilian multinational headquarters on the formation of competences at their foreign subsidiaries. More specifically, it investigated influences of those independent variables on the development of non-local competences (by the subsidiaries themselves) and on the transfer of competences from the parent companies to their subsidiaries. Furthermore, the study investigated the main characteristics of Brazilian multinationals´ GM. For the hypotheses to be tested, a survey was carried out, employing a multilevel research design; for the empirical analysis, a hierarchical linear modeling was employed. Initially, a set of 97 Brazilian multinationals were invited to take part in the research. The total number of returned and acceptable questionnaires was: 64 from headquarters and 79 from subsidiaries. The results of the descriptive analysis indicated that Brazilian multinationals have, in general, a high GM; this finding reflects the profile of the sample which comprised some of the most internationalized Brazilian companies. Nevertheless, it was identified that a small group of companies (6%) show lower GM levels; it was also observed that \"global skills\" is the GM dimension regarding which Brazilian firms are most fragile. Furthermore, a cluster analysis revealed that those companies present multiple configurations when GM and cultural factors were considered simultaneously; the most numerous cluster encompassed companies which have, at the same time, higher GM levels and higher cultural factor levels. The multilevel analysis, in turn, indicated that there is a positive relationship between GM and the development of non-local competences at subsidiaries; conversely, cultural factors (power distance and uncertainty avoidance) are negatively related to development of non-local competences. Furthermore, according to the regression coefficient analysis, the effect of cultural factors on non-local competences is stronger than the GM effect. When the dimensions that comprise the independent variables were tested separately, it was noticed that global skills are positively related to development of non-local competences at subsidiaries; power distance, in turn, is negatively related. The results also revealed effects of GM and cultural factors on specific competences developed at subsidiaries or transferred from Brazilian headquarters. Significant results for headquarter transfers were noticed only when the competences were tested separately. This work contributes to theory and research on international business by showing how culture and GM influence the formation of competences at subsidiaries, particularly competences that may be transferred to the multinational network (non-locals). As such competences are especially relevant for the competitiveness of Brazilian companies abroad, the headquarter dimensions (GM and culture) deserve to be monitored and managed. Another contribution of this study is of methodological nature, as it employed a multilevel research design and hierarchical linear modelling. In fact, these approaches have been overlooked in international business research, despite their potential and strengths. The limits of this study and suggestions for further research are also discussed.

The growing competition for consumer markets, driven by globalization, has required organizations to put in practice strategies to support new business conditions in order to keep its market share and provide continuous growing. In this context, we highlight the needs to implement strategies and processes to have efficient management between headquarters and subsidiaries, highlighted the management of supply. This paper is focused on the management of global sourcing. The aim of the research was to perform analysis of how the production subsidiaries of foreign multinationals, operating in Brazil, are embedded and attend to organizations global sourcing strategies. Initially, an extensive literature research on the global sourcing strategy was made, which identified a gap related to the interaction of the subsidiary in the overall supply. Previous studies have been focused on the organization world headquarters, strategies to implement and manage global sourcing. The field research was adopted as a research method, using visits, and semi-structured interview in-depth with local supply managers, and documentary research. Sample was composed of eight foreign multinational companies with production facilities in Brazil. Different stages of the purchasing function have been identified, according to stage model proposed by Monczka e Trent (2003a). Most of them were characterized by organizational arrangements, management and control forms classified in global sourcing strategy, and significantly less, companies operating at the level of international purchases. Noteworthy, it was identified in most of companies visited, that production subsidiary participation is partially aligned with the strategy of global sourcing, reactive to the demands from world headquarters. The study suggests that local production subsidiaries should review its approach related to the global sourcing management, becoming more proactive, aligned with the organization global sourcing strategy, as well as serving in their level of expertise, best practices referenced in the literature.

The Research on Political Risk and Choice between Joint Venture and Wholly Owned Subsidiary of Taiwanese MNEs¡¦ Investment in Vietnam: The Role of Moderators

Liu, Chih-feng 08 February 2010 (has links)
Since ¡§Doi Moi¡¨ (renovation) begun in 1986, Vietnam has engaged in economic reform on an on-going basis in order to create a fruitful investment environment and attract foreign investors to engage in its market. As the total investment amount is over 19 billion US dollars, the role of Taiwanese investors played is more important than before. Notwithstanding that the investment environment in Vietnam has improved more significantly than ever, the enterprises¡¦ operation still has to bear considerable risk. Due to Vietnam¡¦s special single-party state constitution, for foreign investors, it is expected that the political risk is existed with the high feasibility of government change policies and ignore investors¡¦ benefits. According to this, the purpose of this research is to realize how the host¡¦s political risk influences Taiwanese MNEs¡¦ entry mode choice. As previous studies generally focused on the discussion of the relationship between political risk and entry mode choice, however, the moderating effects of firms¡¦ own resource and advantages are less mentioned. Therefore, this thesis tries to provide a theoretical framework based on resource-based view, eclectic theory and other related theories that includes profitability, financial structure, and R&D capability as the contingency factors to examine how these factors moderate the relationship between political risk and entry mode choice. The findings of this study reveal that when the political risk in Vietnam getting higher, Taiwanese MNEs are more likely to engage in Vietnam through JVs. Besides, the positive moderating effect of profitability is also existed. It shows when a firm with higher profitability, it will more tend to choose JVs as the political risk in Vietnam rising.

Fatores do ambiente de negócios determinantes para a formação de centros de excelência: um estudo com subsidiárias de multinacionais no Brasil / Factors of business environment determinants for the formation of centers of excellence: a study un subsidiaries of multinationals in Brazil

José Hamilton Maturano Cipolla 14 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the factors of business environment that favors the formation of centers of excellence (Frost; Birkinshaw; Ensign, 2002). The centers of excellence have been seen as an important source for the creation and development of technology. The presence of these centers in Brazil could mean an important role for the country in the global knowledge economy, so it is relevant understanding the environmental factors that may lead to the decision of foreign multinationals to establish such centers. In order to analysis the business environment were used the models Porter\'s diamond (1989) of national competitive advantage and the approach by Moon, Rugman and Verbeke, (1998), the generalized double diamond model. The national diamond has been used in research by Frost, Birkinshaw and Ensign (2002). This thesis has extended the analysis of the business environment with the perspective of the international diamond, made possible by the generalized double diamond model, which considers the relevant role of multinational corporations. The research was a survey with a sample of 172 questionnaires sends to CEOs of foreign subsidiaries. The results show that the determinants of national diamond are relevant to performance subsidiaries of 154 respondents, 89.53% of the sample. And, the international diamond determinants are relevant to performance 118 companies, i.e., 68.60% of the sample. However, the regression analysis has limitations as to the capacity of the national diamond propitiate the formation of centers of excellence.

The challenge of implementing TPS in the Czech Republic: A study in cross-cultural management / Výzva implementace TPS v České republice: studie v mezikulturním managementu

Koža, Michal January 2014 (has links)
This master's thesis analyzes the possibilities of implementation of Toyota Production System within Japanese subsidiaries in Czech Republic. It explores the fit between the cultural values of Czech and Japanese management and the values incorporated in the Toyota Production System. In order to conduct the study, 79 companies were contacted, and survey responses from a total of 108 Czech and Japanese employees were collected. Data from the survey show that both Czech and Japanese employees have similar values related to work and neither job satisfaction nor number of conflicts is connected with TPS training. In the conclusion, areas for further research and more detailed elaboration are identified and presented.

Enforcing Global Strategies in Subsidiaries of Highly Decentralized Multinational Corporations. The Role of International Sales Managers

Schill, Richard Bruno January 2013 (has links)
Resistance of subsidiaries of multinational corporations to global coordination efforts by their headquarters is an important contemporary research subject in the field of international business studies. This case study of sales and marketing organizations in five international subsidiaries of a highly divisionalized corporation illustrates how the capabilities and the willingness to adopt and pursue global strategies is strongly influenced by local situational and organizational factors. The defining business problem was different in each country organization, ranging from product related issues such as quick innovation cycles and price competition, to economic concerns like emerging market dynamics and economic crisis, and other problems related to cultural dissimilarity. A large degree of divisionalization seems to dilute central leadership, as central managers compete for the attention and the resources of the subsidiaries and local managers behave like independent distributors, picking and choosing the most favorable offerings. In order to establish successful leadership in the absence of hierarchical control, intermediate central sales and marketing managers need to first of all internally coordinate their activities towards their local counterparts. Top management needs to establish legitimate authority of intermediate managers by clear definitions of international matrix roles and management procedures. Central sales and marketing managers need to have enough international field experience to be able to correctly assess the different local situations, advance their initiatives in a diplomatic way on all local hierarchy levels and to become overall credible and accepted partners for the local teams. Directly engaging in field activities with local customers and sales teams seems to help achieving these objectives and thus to contribute to the successful enforcement of global strategies.
