The Matrix Behind Womanhood : Political Ideology and Substantive Representation of Women in Poland

Keizer, Dominique January 2021 (has links)
In 2015 the Polish political environment saw a sudden change with the election of PiS (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość/Law and Justice), a conservative right-wing wing party that became the ruling voice in society. Due to the interconnectedness of politics and religion, the role of the Catholic church gained prevalence leading to a shift in the preferred discursive practices. This paper shall primarily focus on the gender perspective, specifically the envisioned role enforced on Polish women by PiS given the shift from liberalism towards conservatism. Substantive representation linked to descriptive representation shall allow to researching policies that concern the needs of women.  As an objective, the study aims to explore gender roles and womanhood through social discourse as well as political actions. The study contributes to the identified research gap between social conservatism and the substantive representation of women in Central and Eastern Europe. Three theories are employed (the Queer theory, the Performativity theory and the Dramaturgical model) that complement each other with the purpose of creating a multi-layered analysis.  In terms of methodology, qualitative research is conducted that includes a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in relation to online data, drawing on principles from nethnography and feminist ethnography. Moreover, in order to grasp the lived experience, a small number of interviews have been conducted. Results have shown the challenging social positioning of women after the implementation of policies concerning women’s rights, such as reproductive rights. This created national debates as to what it means to provide women with a ‘voice’ and how this might threaten the freedom of expression and consequently human rights. Counter-narratives show the resistance to the conditioning of behavioural expectations.

Vad kan ligga bakom företags substantiva CSR-handlingar?

Englund, Julia January 2021 (has links)
CSR-reporting give companies various advantages, it can among other things improve the legitimacy of companies. However, as a result of that more and more companies want to take advantages of the benefits of CSR-reporting, the phenomenon of decoupling arises. The companies state that they must do something and engage in symbolic actions, without implementing the substantive actions. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the connections between symbolic and substantive actions, between financial resources and substantive actions, and discuss differences and similarities between European and American companies. The study included a sample of 1001 companies in Europe and the United States. Three correlation analyzes, three regression analyzes and one t-test were used. The results show that the companies in the study do not engage in decoupling. However, the study shows a connection between financial resources and substantive actions. Some minor differences emerged between European and American companies.

Life is unfair – but not without reason : A field study of Sri Lankan women’s struggle for equal political representation and influence

Kanold, Erica January 2020 (has links)
This study investigates resistance against female local government politicians in Sri Lanka during their first year and a half as members of local government councils, as a result of the 25 % gender quota introduced in 2018. Further, the study investigates these newly elected female politicians’ perceived ability to influence local government politics; experienced substantive representation. Through a minor field study, in-depth interviews were conducted to examine forms of resistance and perceived political influence of these newly appointed women. Several types of resistance were found and divided into three categories; Patronizing Behavior from Male Politicians; the Dispute Between Elected and Appointed Women; Public Distrust. Some evidence of the mandate effect and the label effect were detected, further hampering substantive representation. The study concludes that despite a significant increase in descriptive representation, substantive representation was not necessarily experienced by the interview subjects. Further studies are encouraged to deepen the understanding of the resistance towards appointed female politicians in Sri Lanka, and moreover the problematic effects of the implementation of gender quotas in highly unequal states.

P a D (statistická a věcná významnost a jejich praktické užívání v českých sociálních vědách) / P and d (Practical usage of statistical and substantive significance in Czech social sciences)

Soukup, Petr January 2017 (has links)
Resume The thesis is focused on the usage of statistical and substantive significance in the Czech social science. The thesis consists of four articles (3 published, 1 unpublished yet), introduction and conclusion including practical recommendations. The aim of the thesis is theoretically describe the current " standards" in the use of statistical and substantive significance and through research (content analysis) of articles published in the three leading Czech journals (Czechoslovak Psychology , Pedagogy and Czech Sociological Journal) empirically assess whether the published articles adhere to the " standards" in the field of statistics and the substantive significance of the results . Basic research question was: How are current " standards" followed in the use of statistical and substantive significance in the Czech social science production? In addition to the basic research questions were additional (auxiliary) research questions: What are the basic limits of statistical significance, i.e. in which cases statistical tests are not appropriate to use? What are the shortcomings of statistical significance itself, and what are the most common problems in the practical use of it by researchers? What are the alternatives to the concept of statistical significance? How is it possible to assess the...

Trestný čin obchodování s lidmi / The Crime of Trafficking in human beings

Kučera, Václav January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the crime of Trafficking in human beings from the point of view of substantive criminal law in the Czech Republic, to analyze its weaknesses and propose their solution. The investigation should include an assessment of whether the Czech Republic's regulation is in line with international law obligations to criminalize this crime. In this work, compilation, legal-historical, analytical and general and legal interpretation methods are used. The first part is an introduction to the issue of human trafficking. This part introduces the subject of the social deviant phenomenon and points out the necessity of its perception in various, not only legal, fields. The following is a historical outline of the development of looking at human trafficking. In the second, fundamental part of the thesis, there is an analysis of the valid substantive criminal law, which deals with human trafficking. This hermeneutic-critical analysis serves to determine the problems that are proposed in the third part of the thesis. The work for quality analysis explores the historical basis of the legal regulation of the crime of trafficking in human beings. It also sets out the three most important sources of international law, which affect the current regulation and compares whether they are...

Women’s rights are human rights – a review of gender bias in South African tax law

Jaffer, Taskeen January 2020 (has links)
The role of taxation in gender inequality is something that is perhaps not considered earnestly enough. Both in South Africa and within the context of global initiatives such as the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which are aimed at eradicating all forms of gender-based discrimination, the importance of understanding the gender consequences of tax policy, whether intended or not, should not be underestimated. This study seeks to identify whether or not there are any instances where South Africa’s personal income tax laws have an effect which is potentially inconsistent with both the Constitutional right to equality between genders and international gender equality agreements to which South Africa is bound, namely the CEDAW and the SDG. In doing so, determine whether South Africa’s personal income tax legislation should become a focal point in this regard and be one of the pillars that could further be used as a means to uphold and further the cause of substantive gender equity. / Mini Dissertation (MCom (Taxation))--University of Pretoria, 2020. / pt2021 / Taxation / MCom (Taxation) / Unrestricted

Mara tena juu ya usarufishaji (suala la mwana)

Gromova, Nelli V. 30 November 2012 (has links)

Realizing Promising Educational Practices in Academic Public Health: A Model for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Neubauer, Leah C., Merzel, Cheryl, Weist, Elizabeth M., Corvin, Jaime A., Forsman, Allan, Fraser, Jacquie, Henderson, Heather L., Hinyard, Leslie J., Opacich, Karin J., Runnerstrom, Miryha G. 01 January 2021 (has links)
This paper presents a conceptual framework and critical considerations for the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in academic public health. Academic education for public health has undergone significant transformation over the last two decades as the demand for responsive and innovative public health pedagogy and training for preparing graduates to deploy an increasing array of skills has grown. The authors suggest that the role of schools, administrators, faculty, and educational staff in developing promising practices for teaching and learning in public health involves an articulated conceptual framework to guide the development and dissemination of scholarly, pedagogical innovations. Building on seminal philosophical foundations of SoTL, the authors conceptualize SoTL from the foundational belief that knowing and learning are communal tasks and that faculty are both scholars and learners in the practice of education. The paper advocates for SoTL as a form of engaged practice and scholarly inquiry that exists in contextually rich, diverse educational environments that abounds with uncertainty. SoTL is guided by an educational philosophy, values, and learning theories that envision educators critically examining themselves, their teaching practice, scholarly literature, and students' learning to improve their teaching, enhance learning, and promote further inquiry. The authors suggest that SoTL involves the search for multiple forms of evidence and fosters dialogues on multiple interpretations and perspectives of the most promising practices of teaching and learning. The authors advocate for the term promising practices as an outcome of SoTL that supports and nurtures ongoing scientific discovery and knowledge generation, instead of supporting the search for best-ness in teaching and learning endeavors. SoTL should occur across formal, informal, and nonformal education.
