Choosing between Git and Subversion : How does the choice affect software developers?

Spandel, Daniel, Kjellgren, Johannes January 2014 (has links)
Today a lot of software projects are using version control systems for maintaining their software source code. There are a lot of version control systems, and the choice of which one to choose is far from simple. Today the two biggest version control systems are Git and Subversion. In this paper we have found the main differences between the two, and investigated how the choice between them affects software developers. Although software developers in many aspects are unaffected by the choice, we did find some interesting findings. When using Git, our empirical study shows that software developers seem to check in their code to the main repository more frequently than they do when using Subversion. We also found indications that software developers tend to use Subversion with a graphical interface, whereas the preferred interface for working with Git seems to be command-line. We were also surprised of how insignificant the learning aspect of the systems seems to be for the developers. Our goal with this paper is to provide a foundation to stand upon when choosing what version control system to use for a software project.

Démons du crime : les pouvoirs du truand et son instrumentalisation idéologique dans la littérature et le cinéma de l’entre-deux-guerres (Allemagne, États-Unis, France) / Crime Devils : the power(s) of the mobster figure and its ideological use in the literature and cinema of the interwar period (Germany, France, United States)

Platini, Vincent 11 December 2010 (has links)
The cultural productions of the interwar years were marked by the proliferation of representations of the mobster figure. Historically, the socio-economic context facilitated the emergence of a certain criminality which started being widely depicted in mass culture including films, crimen ovels and drama. The mobster figure depicted in these productions turns out to be all the more versatile since power relations were going through profound changes at that time : the official authorities were being contested, the limits of legality were redefined and with the advent of the Third Reich, those who had once challenged power eventually acceded to it. The representations of mobsters therefore acquired ambiguous meanings. These characters could very well support social control by imposing norms and justifying measures of surveillance orembody resistance against the establishment, pointing out loopholes in control systems and promoting new life styles. Based on Michel Foucault’s works, this dissertation examines the social, scientific and political discourses featured in the cultural productions of that periodas well as the ideological, esthetical and practical instrumentalisation of these characters. This dissertation argues that mobsters may appear as participants of punitive and disciplinary systems which subdue the people, but may also be questioning the powers and discourses that shape their representations. This work further demonstrates that, because mass culture usually adapts itself to its consumers, the mobsters may also be taken on by the audience, being the promoters of new cultural practices and new social bonds.

The subversive Afrikaner : an exploration into the subversive stance of the little magazine Stet (1982–1991)

Deysel, Jurgens Johannes Human 08 October 2008 (has links)
This study explores the subversive stance taken by the Afrikaans little magazine Stet (1982–1991) against the then current ideologies of Afrikaansness, apartheid, and censorship in South Africa during the 1980s. A narrative exploration of the context and circumstances from which the publication emerged, provides a base from which the visualisation of the subversive stance on the covers of Stet is semiotically analysed. The oppositional and alternative nature of the covers of Stet is discussed from within the Barthesian paradigm of myth construction and the discipline of social semiotics. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Visual Arts / unrestricted

Hofmann, Petr January 2008 (has links)
Thema of this master thesis is Using Ruby on Rails for support of team collaboration of developers. The main objective is support of team collaboration of developers (students of programming courses) at the Catedry of Computer Science of the University of Economics Prague. The objective has been acomplished by developement of a new application in Ruby on Rails on the school server kitscm.vse.cz. This application is used for support of team collaboration. Application automatizes some of procedures, which were made on the server kitscm.vse.cz manually in the past. Application collaborates with another open-source applications (openldap, dokuwiki, subversion) running on the kitscm.vse.cz server. After the introduction (chapter 1), follows familiarization with Ruby and Ruby on Rails (chapter 2), analysis and design of the application (chapter 3), familirization with application operational architecture (chapter 4) and example of development of part of the application (chapter 5). Main benefit is an application supporting team collaboration, which is used by students and teachers. The whole application is available on http://sourceforge.net/projects/kitscm/ under GPL license.

Female subversion in Zakes Mda's novel, The Madonna of Excelsior

Kgoshiadira, Pitsi Rebeccah January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (English Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / This dissertation examines different modes of female subversion in the novel, The Madonna of Excelsior (2002) by Zakes Mda. Using feminist theory, the study explores how women in the novel transgress apartheid laws and how they use existing discriminatory laws to their own advantage. In addition, it illustrates how these women rise above those existing laws to establish their own subjectivity and independence. The Madonna of Excelsior is a novel set in apartheid South Africa where laws prohibiting sexual relationships between whites and blacks were in effect. Niki, the main character in the novel, transgresses these laws by having sexual intercourse with white men, one of whom eventually fathers her baby. Niki gives birth to Popi who is ostracised by the Mahlatswetsa community because of her mixed racial identity. In spite of growing up in a prejudiced community, Popi works hard and becomes an important member of the town council later on when apartheid gives way to black rule. Popi subverts apartheid and the prejudice of her community by accepting herself as a coloured person, by being active in the political affairs of the Mahlatswetsa community, by engaging with the community through her service at the library and during funerals, and by reconciling with Tjaart Cronje, her half-brother. Popi’s mother, Niki, also subverts apartheid’s discriminatory laws by having sexual relationships with Afrikaner men such as Johannes Smit and Stephanus Cronje. Through these affairs, she exposes the hypocrisy of the Afrikaners and the unfairness of their laws. However, Niki’s subversion goes beyond the use of sex and the body. In her marriage with Pule, she suffers wife battering and marital infidelity. In this instance, Niki subverts traditional expectations of women by leaving Pule and establishing an independent life for herself and her children. In giving birth to Popi and raising her as a coloured child, Niki exposes the double standards of Afrikaner morality. She subverts viii the judgmental attitude of the Mahlatswetsa community by withdrawing from the community and resorting to bee-keeping. In this isolated space, she finds healing. Other female characters in the novel, such as Maria, Mampe and The Seller of Songs, also subvert the apartheid system and their communities through their sexual escapades with white men and their service to the community. On her part, Cecilia Mapeta subverts apartheid by her direct rejection of illicit sex with white men and her pursuit of education. In contrast to her, Maria and Mampe use mainly sex and the body to ensure their survival in a racist South Africa. The Seller of Songs, like Popi, uses her service to the community to subvert its prejudice. In their different circumstances, the women characters in this novel employ different subversive strategies, all of which work ultimately to their advantage. On the whole, this study argues that female subversion in Zakes Mda’s The Madonna of Excelsior is effected through various media, including sex and the body, racial differentiation, education, silence, community engagement, political activity, and family reconciliation.

Breaking Down Binaries : Gender Subversion in Olive Schreiner’s "Undine" and "The Story of an African Farm"

Van Biljon, Lana January 2020 (has links)
This study investigates a thus far neglected aspect of Olive Schreiner’s feminism, namely her subversion of Victorian gender models in her early novels, Undine and The Story of an African Farm. In order to determine what is being subverted a brief outline is first provided of the nature of traditional male and female Victorian gender characteristics; thereafter, the key arguments of Gender Theory are provided, the cornerstone of which is that gender is a social construct and not determined by biology. Analysis of Undine focusses on Schreiner’s eponymous heroine’s subversion of female gender roles, finding that Undine’s subversion is incomplete, due to her repeated lapses into conventional behaviour, seen mainly in her need to fulfil a role of service. In addition, details in Undine are linked to biographical aspects of Schreiner’s own life as many critics have made a link between Schreiner’s fiction and instances in her life. In The Story of an African Farm attention is given to both female and male gender subversion. Female gender subversion is analysed in the character Lyndall who deviates from accepted female characteristics of women as meek and docile, while discussion also focusses on her more conventional cousin, Em, who by acting as her foil, highlights Lyndall’s subversiveness. Although in comparison to Undine, Lyndall shows great progress in her ability to free herself from traditional roles for women, she remains held back by her inability to break free from the idea that service to something was an inherent part of women’s natures. Finally, Schreiner’s most radical work regarding gender is found in connection with her male characters, Gregory Rose and Waldo. While Schreiner shows the constructed nature of male gender models in her characterisation of Gregory who identifies more with the female gender, Waldo avoids gender categories completely, aligning himself with neither femininity nor masculinity, by finding an “escape” from these artificial social constructs in the natural world. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / English / MA / Unrestricted

Fenomén českého travesti show - vystupující vs. publikum / The phenomenon of the czech travesti show - performers vs. audience

Dobešová, Mirka January 2013 (has links)
Travesti show - in other words men's dressing as women (especially famous singers) in order to create a parody - has become a legitimate part of the Czech cultural events for the last twenty years. Moreover, in comparison with a foreign production of that kind it is very specific as regards terminology and content. Although travesti show theme has penetrated into the Czech academic ground too, it is still understood only from the perspective of gender performativity and is focused on performers themselves. On the contrary, this paper tries to grasp spectators' perspectives regarding not only the audience perception of the performers, but also a wide range of spectators' characteristics related to their general degree of tolerance towards gender roles in the society as well as LGBT issues in comparison with common population.
