Modelling the Effect of Suspended Bodies on Cavitation Bubbles near a Ridgid Boundary using a Boundary Integral Approach

McGregor, Peter Stanley January 2003 (has links)
Cavitation is the spontaneous vaporisation of a liquid to its gaseous state due to the local absolute pressure falling to the liquid's vapour pressure (Douglas, Gasiorek et al. 1995). Cavitation is present in a wide range of mechanical systems ranging from ship screws to journal bearing. Generally, cavitation is unavoidable and may cause considerable damage and efficiency losses to these systems. This thesis considers hydraulic systems specifically, and uses a modified Greens equation to develop a boundary integral method to simulate the effect that suspended solid bodies have on a single cavitation bubble. Because of the limitations of accurately modelling cavitation bubbles beyond touchdown, results are only presented for cases up to touchdown. The aim of the model is to draw insight into the reasons there is a measurable change in cavitation erosion rate with increasing oil-in-water emulsion percentage. This principle was extended to include the effect that ingested particulates may have on cavitation in hydraulic machinery. Two particular situations are modelled; the first consists of stationary rigid particles in varying proximity to a cavitation bubble near a rigid boundary. The second case is similar; however the suspended particle is allowed to move under the influence of the pressure differential caused by the expanding/contracting cavitation bubble. Numerous characteristics of the domain are considered, including domain pressures and fluid field motion, and individual boundary surface characteristics. The conclusion of the thesis is that solid bodies, either stationary or moving, have little effect on the cavity from an energy perspective. Regardless of size or density, all energy transferred from the cavity to the solid body is returned indicating that there is no net change. As this energy is ultimately responsible for the peak pressure experienced by the domain (and hence responsible for eroding the rigid boundary) as the cavity rebounds, it then serves that a cavity with a solid body will rebound at the same pressure as a cavity without a suspended body present. If this is coupled with the observation that the cavity centroid at touchdown is largely unaffected by the presence of a suspension, then it would appear that the bubble near a solid would rebound at a very similar position as a cavity without a solid. Consequently, the damage potential of a cavity is unaffected by a suspension. However, there is one point of contention as the profile of the re-entrant jet of the cavity is altered by the presence of a suspension. As energy is radiated away from the cavity during penetration, it is possible that the shape of the jet may alter the rate that energy is radiated away during penetration. However, this requires further research to be definitive.

This study aimed to characterize the distribution patterns of suspended particulate matter along the Sepetiba Bay, linking spatial and temporal variability with tidal cycles. Furthermore, the study also evaluates the applicability of acoustic devices as tools for estimation of concentrations of suspended particulate matter. Data acquisition was performed in a total of seven campaigns carried out between November 2010 and December 2011. Seven stations were located near the main channel access to the bay along a transect that extends from its interior to its mouth. The seven sampling campaigns are distributed in two long series of 13 and 25 hours of acquisitions at a fixed station, and five campaigns along the transect. Data acquisition involves: collecting water samples to estimate the concentrations of particulate matter, bottom sediments collected to characterize particle size of the stations sampled; profiles of physicochemical parameters; current data obtained at the bottom. The processing of water samples and sediments was conducted in the Oceanografic Geology Laboratory Laboratório de Oceanografia Geológica of the Faculdade de Oceanografia - Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. The concentrations of suspended particulate matter were used for the calibration of acoustic and optical sensors, allowing an evaluation of more detailed spatial and temporal patterns of distribution along the bottom and along the water column. The analysis allowed to identify that the highest concentrations of suspended particulate matter occur in conditions of high tide, and are associated with tidal asymmetry (highest current velocities). The bay can be divided into two sectors: one in the northern area, where riverine characteristics are more pronounced, and concentrations of suspended particles respond to the spread of the plume of São Francisco channel, and another that extends from the central portion to its mouth, where dominate the marine domain, influenced by events from the continental shelf. It can also be identified the influence of La Niña, which was probably responsible for: high salinities found inside the bay and occurrence of South Atlantic Central Water at lower depths. Regarding the use of acoustic equipment in the estimation of concentrations of particulate matter, the results were rich in detail, which allowed us to evaluate the behavior of particulate material near the bottom for different tidal conditions, turbulence and incidence of oscillations.

Assessment of air pollution in residential areas : a case study of Kinondoni Municipality, Tanzania

Ndambuki, J.M., Rwanga, S. January 2008 (has links)
Published Article / Air pollution, just like any other type of pollution, produces harmful effects to man and his environment. In spite of knowing this, many less industrialised countries of the world have no air quality monitoring strategies in place. Consequently, documented evidence of air pollution studies in such countries is scarce. This is the case in Tanzania. This scenario is made worse by lack of scientific tools which could aid in identifying air pollution-prone areas with a view to aiding town planners in locating safe sites for schools, hospitals and residential areas as well as parks. In this paper, we present results of a study carried out in the city of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania on air pollution in residential areas. Results show significant air pollution in the studied areas. Moreover, both adults and children are at risk due to lead pollution in the air.

Transverse transport of suspended sediment across the main channel – floodplain shear boundary

Denys, Frank 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The floodplain of a river forms a close relationship with the stream that created it. Not only does the river influence the characteristics of the floodplain, the floodplain can also very easily influence its river, as is evidenced by examples such as the Huang He River in China and the Columbia River in Canada. These two cases clearly indicate that suspended sediment has a pronounced influence on the floodplain. This thesis investigates the processes which cause sediment to move onto the floodplain. As observed in many rivers worldwide suspended sediment on the floodplain has a tendency to settle near but not directly next to the main river channel. This gap between the river channel and the location of highest sedimentation rate stems from the fact that there is a zone of relatively higher turbulence at the boundaries of the floodplain. Close to this zone flow on the floodplain is increased in velocity whilst the flow velocity in the main channel is decreased as can be seen in the figure below: ...

Analyses of recreational water quality as related to sediment resuspension

Doyle, Jack David. January 1985 (has links)
Aquatic sediments, at a lake beach site in the Tonto National Forest, Arizona, were experimentally disrutped to quantitatively determine the impact of sediment resuspension on recreational water quality. Sediment resuspension was found to significantly degrade the quality of recreational waters. Mean sediment fecal coliform densities exceeded mean fecal coliform densities in overlying waters by 24.7 fold. When these sediments were experimentally disrupted, fecal coliform densities and turbidity levels in the water column increased by 1.4 to 2.8 and 1.1 to 5.4 fold, respectively. The impact of sediment resuspension on overlying waters was short-lived at the point of disruption. Increasing FC densities and turbidities generally peaked within 5 sec of resuspension and declined to preresuspension levels within 500 sec. The magnitude of the resuspension impact was most significantly influenced by water depth. The greatest risk to public health was found to be within the 0.3 m depth zone; that near-shoreline area most intensively used by young children for water play.
