Inovação e sustentabilidade na cadeia produtiva do plástico verde

Mores, Giana de Vargas January 2013 (has links)
The literature highlighted in this research considered that, in an organizational context, innovation has strengthened its role in the function of contributing to sustainable development. Thereby, the climate change scenario adds to the development of sustainable technologies and achievement of clean raw materials. This research has focused on the analysis of how the innovation process occurs in the green plastic supply chain, by replacing a non-renewable resource (naphtha from oil) for a renewable one (ethanol from sugarcane), from the focal organizational, considering the sustainability perspective. Therefore, this research was classified as exploratory and descriptive, due to its qualitative nature. The central method used was a case study; it included thirteen interviews related to the green plastic supply chain (considering Braskem as the focal organization). From the perspective of the focal organization, the diamond of the total innovation was applied to the research. The characteristics of green plastic extrapolate the nature of technological innovation. The sustainability of the product is also linked to the use of renewable input (ethanol from sugar cane), highlighting the fact that the carbon dioxide is captured from the atmosphere over the cultivation of sugarcane, remaining fixed during the life cycle of the product. The biopolymers development is justified by the oil finiteness and its aggravating the greenhouse gas emissions. This development is also due to climate advantages obtained by the production of sugarcane and the amount of available land for cultivation in Brazil. Based on the theoretical discussion of the focal organization, it is able to induce innovation in their supply chains, determining which upstream and downstream effects were initiated by Braskem to consider the green plastic innovation. Based on upstream spillovers, it was visualized that, for the green plastic production, the replacement of the raw material caused significant changes in the supply chain. The sugarcane gave to the chain, by the capture of carbon dioxide, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It is inferred that the Conduct Code for Braskem Ethanol Suppliers was the main upstream factor that triggered these outcomes. The main downstream effects developed by the focal organization are related to the environmental importance suggested by this product. Potential clients have been identified by the focal organization and, for them, the I’m green™ mark was created, which can be considered a major downstream spillover. In most cases, the use of green plastic adds value to the products, which can become a competitive advantage for organizations that use it. In the case studied, it became clear that, from examples of actions and practices, the sustainability policy of the focal organization is sustained on the three main dimensions of sustainability. Moreover, from the analysis of the diamond of the total innovation, the characteristics of the green plastic and the actions discussed in innovation and sustainability perspectives, it can advance the theoretical discussion inferring that the green plastic can be considered a sustainable innovation.

Gestão do uso da energia e do desempenho inovador sustentável na cadeia de suprimentos da indústria mineral / Energy use and innovation sustainability performance management in the supply chain of the mineral industry

Camargo, Caroline Rossetto 05 May 2014 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The management of energy use has been used by industries of several market segments aiming to make their processes more sustainable and more competitive. There is a recurrent concern to combine business strategy with sustainable development in the present scenario. In this new configuration, innovation acts as a competitive differentiator, used to achieve quality, sustainability and efficiency in processes as well as products. Therefore, sustainable innovation becomes a strategic and economic factor for any industry that seek to achieve a high degree of sustainability, especially for the mineral industry due to their environmental and social impacts caused by mining activity and its importance for economic development of the country . From the proposed objectives and based on the theoretical assumptions of Liu et al. (2012), Gunday et al. (2011) and GRI (2006, 2010), we sought to identify management practices of energy use and sustainable innovation performance in the supply chain of the mineral industry. The research has a qualitative exploratory and descriptive approach, using a multicase study, which was developed from exploratory interviews and documentary research with five companies in the mineral sector. Among the main results, it was possible to highlight in two cases the adoption of management practices of energy use and its association with sustainable innovation performance. This attitude shows that Brazilian organizations of the mineral industry are seeking to meet environmental and social demands. In the remaining three cases, the main assumption of the study was not supported by the evidence.

The development of a disruptive innovation response framework within the South African insurance context: adapt, regenerate, transcend (Art)

Amos, Shereen 22 December 2020 (has links)
Companies, nations, governments and multilateral organisations are each in their context recognising that 20th-century approaches to innovation and competitiveness are no longer relevant or effective – with whole industries and economies challenged by the fastmoving and disruptive forces of 21st-century technologies that enable unprecedented innovative capability. The rate and scale of change and disruption calls for innovation thinking more suited to a world highly connected and networked and rapidly redefined by global digital architecture and alternative forms of value exchange, value creation and capture enabled through networks, platforms, and innovation ecosystems. For a mature industry to navigate potential disruption on this scale and possibly direct disruptive innovation of its own, will require a dramatic departure from innovation and business as usual. Christensen (1997) posits that disruptive innovation is the only way for incumbents to maintain market leadership and secure future growth. So how should mature firms respond to disruption, and which strategies are effective to become disruptive too? I undertake a grounded theory study into how specifically, the insurance industry (life and health), navigates disruptive influence and plans to become disruptive too. My analysis of the literature and the research findings has led to the development of an Adapt, Regenerate, Transcend response strategy framework, the ART framework, which describes these three broad response strategies and a further set of sub-strategies, that answer the question of how firms respond to disruptive influence and become disruptive too. The ART framework is my contribution to the work on disruptive innovation response strategies. The framework shows how incumbents can apply one or more of these three broad strategies to suit their objectives. The adapt response strategy, a short-term, defensive or opportunistic strategy, aims to extend lifecycles and fend off disruptive challenges. The regenerate response strategy is an expansive, increasingly inclusive, and transformative hybrid strategy that seeks to extend lifecycles and pursue new growth opportunities that might transform the core business over time to become disruptive too. The transcend response strategy is an original and disruptive strategy where the lead firm partners to reframe and reinvent an industry through a collectively directed value proposition that creates an entirely new playing field. Using the ART framework, I also show how disruptive innovation is an inclusive innovation strategy and how the framework applies to and is of use in the context of inclusive and sustainable innovation. In doing so, a new meta-innovation concept of generative innovation emerges, which the framework begins to describe broadly and which I propose as an area of future research.

DESIGN THINKING AND SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION: A CASE STUDY ON THE HUSKY SLEDGING BUSINESS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Demuro, Cristina January 2021 (has links)
Mushers, sledges, and husky teams run through Lapland for approximately 5000 years already to move goods, travel, and even military purposes. Nowadays, the mushing tradition has entered the local culture and evolved into a professional vocation for numerous entrepreneurs. Husky sledging companies of different sizes and business cultures meet the increasing touristic demand for sledging rides and safaris in the Finnish wilderness. Husky tours constitute a unique selling point for lots of Arctic destinations because part of the “to-do list” of every tourist exploring the extreme North. Despite the growing interests shown by visitors, the academic world has almost never focused any attention or resources to research the husky sledging industry. Since the covid-19 spread also in Lapland, the entire husky sledging business is condemned to face severe consequences and deal with wicked problems. This thesis aims to fill the research gap on the husky safari business and to offer husky tour companies support in mitigating the economic impacts caused by the pandemic outbreak. The investigation is based on the participatory action research realised in collaboration with Bearhill Husky, a dog sledging company operating in Rovaniemi. Design Thinking has been applied as a research methodology to develop sustainable solutions that could help the company survive the crisis. The aim is to prove that, under certain conditions, Design Thinking can succeed in this intent and to inspire other kennels to apply this methodology for developing resilience and sustainable innovation. This research looks at what has been destroyed and sees room for growth and progress and teaches that sometimes the problem is our approach towards it.

The Power of Leadership : Leaders' Behaviours within the Innovation Process as a Contribution Towards Creating Sustainable Businesses

Winstrup, Louise, Barta, Veronika January 2021 (has links)
Background: Companies are assuming a vital role in shaping the future for the coming generations through the development of sustainable innovations. Previous studies have stressed the importance of leadership as fundamental in the innovation process and when creating more sustainable businesses. Leaders behaving responsibly are assumed to have a positive impact on the outcome of the innovation process, as the employees are likely to apply the same behaviour. Even so, exactly how leaders behave to combine innovation and sustainability has not yet been theorised, hence, the integration of leadership, sustainability, and innovation is inadequate in the realm of literature. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how leaders behave when fostering an innovation process that leads to sustainable products, services, and/or technologies. Method: The research uses a qualitative method with an inductive approach conducted through semi- structured interviews at three Swedish business-to-business (B2B) multinational enterprises (MNEs) with three leaders working with sustainability, three innovation managers, and one environment manager. Conclusion: The findings suggest three important behavioural dimensions of leaders when promoting an innovation process that leads to sustainable outcomes. In the analysis section, these dimensions are synchronised into a framework; the first one, Reinforcing Positive Psychological State, influences both Making Future-Oriented Strategic Decisions and Modelling the Opportunities and Importance, while the two latter are interrelated. By applying the behaviours illustrated in the framework, leaders behave in a way that fosters the innovation of sustainable outcomes.

The role of sustainable innovation and factors influencing AI implementation : SMEs in the machine manufacturing and agricultural sector

Hitz, Fabian, Benning, Britt January 2022 (has links)
Sustainable innovation is becoming increasingly important for today’s society due to the existing ecological threats to the earth. Thus, companies have a special responsibility with regard to new technologies and products. One important emerging technology is artificial intelligence (AI), which can help to make processes more efficient and save resources. However, managers are usually not supported by scientists when implementing AI in their businesses, which leads to companies failing in this endeavor or achieving unintended results, especially in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Research on the combination of AI with sustainable innovation has received fairly little attention to date. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out the role of sustainable innovation for SMEs in different sectors and how they perceive a possible implementation of AI. This includes factors such as motivation, barriers, solutions, and advantages. The selected sectors are machine manufacturing and agriculture as they are highly relevant to the topic. The study also looks at possible differences and similarities between the sectors. For this purpose, an exploratory and qualitative research approach was adopted by performing a multiple case study. Four semi-structured interviews with SMEs, two from each sector, were conducted to provide insights into the research field. The results reveal that sustainable innovation plays an important role within these two sectors, as all interviewed companies have a common motivation and responsibility to save the earth’s ecosystem. However, in most aspects the sectors differ here, especially regarding barriers. The companies also reveal a lot of interest in the implementation of artificial intelligence, but barely any differences were found between the sectors, in particular concerning, barriers, solutions, and possible AI types. The study has limited generalizability, as studies with larger companies or different turnovers, in other countries and sectors, and/or with different existing technologies might generate alternative results.

MONEYMAKER OR GLOBAL SAVER- Exploratory study on Sustainable Innovation

Dawson Barker, Benjamin, Ma, Ziyue, Oubari, Zein January 2023 (has links)
In recent years, both academia and practice have shown an increased interest in sustainable innovation. This new area is examined in the context of large enterprises in our qualitative multiple case study. This thesis thus contributes to a better understanding of the concept as well as the underlying variables that drive sustainable innovation. Theory emphasized both external and internal elements in organizations' engagement in sustainable innovation. The empirical evidence helps to identify nine key factors driving sustainable innovation in large firms: cost and cost reduction, risk and risk reduction, sales and profit margin, reputation and brand value, attractiveness as an employer, innovation capabilities, partnerships and collaborations, regions and culture, regulation and government. It also clarifies the extent to which each of the components influences the process of producing sustainable innovation within organizations. These elements have been discovered to complement one another, occasionally colliding and enhancing one another. This study is based on extensive data gathered through semi-structured interviews and secondary sources from two of Sweden's top industry leaders: IKEA and Epiroc. Theoretical and managerial implications are examined in depth, providing valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners.

Human resource slack, sustainable innovation and environmental performance of small and medium-sized enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa

Adomako, Samuel, Nguyen, N.P. 2020 June 1917 (has links)
Yes / Despite the burgeoning interests in the environmental strategy, there is a limited understanding of how human resource slack drives sustainable innovation and environmental performance. This paper contributes to filling this gap by examining the effect of human resource slack on sustainable innovation and its impact on environmental performance. Besides, this paper investigates the contingent effects of intangible resource advantage on this relationship. The hypotheses are tested using data from 301 small and medium‐sized enterprises in Ghana. The results suggest that human resource slack positively relates to sustainable innovation and this relationship is moderated by intangible resource advantage. Also, we find that sustainable innovation mediates the relationship between human resource slack and environmental performance. The insights from our paper provide a nuanced understanding of the relationships among human resource lack, sustainable innovation, and environmental performance. Implications for theory and practices are discussed. / University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Inovação para o desenvolvimento sustentável da bovinocultura de corte brasileira: o caso dos sistemas de integração / Innovation for the sustainable development of Brazilian beef cattle: the case of integration systems

Matias, Marcos José de Almeida 11 December 2018 (has links)
Thus, it has to be considered traditional methods of production in the Brazilian beef cattle, taking into consideration the need to modify the business vision, as well as which actions are adopted towards innovative solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of their production. In this sense, the development of product, process and organizational management innovations, requires continuous studies and practices. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to analyze the innovation for the sustainable development of the integration systems, in regards to Brazilian beef cattle and propose an improvement in the production methods. It is a predominantly qualitative research, with an exploratory. The study at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa Gado de Corte), based in Campo Grande - MS, focusing on Integration Systems projects. Initially, a bibliographic study was carried out on the themes of innovation, sustainable development and sustainable innovations. Secondly, the data to be used were obtained from primary sources, generated by semi-structured interviews, and from secondary sources from the institution\'s documents and reports. The results depicted that in the integration systems there are innovations for sustainable development, which are adequate and directed to the solutions of Brazilian beef cattle problems. It was also observed that these innovations provide performance improvements in line with environmental, economic and social matters. This is due to more sustainable production systems that are being driven and prioritized by research from public institutions, such as Embrapa Gado de Corte. Considering the producer, it has been found that production through integrated systems points to the possibility to diversify production and in a long-term the consolidation in the sustainable domestic and international meat market. The results also depicted that the management of sustainable pastures, the mitigation of greenhouse gases and the flexibilization of the rural unit carried out in the integration systems are based on innovations mostly in order to be environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. Moreover, the study evidences a potential for strengthen the sustainable innovation that will provide opportunities of growth for Brazilian beef cattle. It can be inferred that there is a demand for sustainable beef as it fills a gap in the market, which is attentive both to food quality and to socio-environmental matters. It can be stated that the results of this thesis contribute to the understanding of factors and mechanisms for innovation and for the sustainable development of Brazilian beef cattle
