The Ministry of Passion and Meditation: Robert Southwell's Marie Magdalens Funeral Teares and the Adaptation of Continental Influences

Benedict, Mark Russell 22 March 2010 (has links)
In his most popular prose work, Mary Magdalens Funeral Teares (1591), English Jesuit Robert Southwell adapts the Mary Magdalene tradition by incorporating the meditative practices of St. Ignatius Loyola coupled with the Petrarchan language of poetry. Thus, he creates a prose work that ministered to Catholic souls, appealed to Protestant audiences, and initiated the literature of tears in England. Southwell readapts the traditional image of Mary Magdalene for a Catholic Early Modern audience by utilizing the techniques of Jesuit meditation, which later flourished in the weeper texts of Richard Crashaw and George Herbert. His vividly imagined scenes also employ the Petrarchan and Ovidian language of longing and absence and coincide with both traditional and mystic early church writers such as Bernard and Augustine. Through this combination, Southwell’s Marie Magdalens Funeral Teares resonated with Catholics deprived of both ministry and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. These contributions solidify Southwell’s place as a pivotal figure in the religious and literary contexts of Early Modern England.

Lecture documentée et analyse textométrique de l'oeuvre de Jules Verne : les influences de la Franc-Maçonnerie dans son oeuvre / Documented reading and textometric analysis of Jules Verne’s writings : influences of Freemasonry in his work / Lectura documentada y análisis textométrico de la obra de Jules Verne : las influencias de la Francmasonería en su obra

Parada-Ramirez, Jose Gregorio 27 June 2013 (has links)
In this work, a first volume includes a linguistic component involving a textometric analysis of Jules Verne’s writings that provides an overview of his work from a statistical perspective; this analysis has allowed us to enhance our vision of his discourse. Taking advantage of new possibilities offered by recent technologies, we have performed a detailed study of nearly all of the corpus of Verne. The second volume explores the influence of Freemasonry on Verne’s work. This volume relates to new trends that have been explored in recent years, providing an additional element that has permitted a new interpretation of the writer. This body of literary criticism has examined Jules Verne under a different light, viewing his work as being influenced by esotericism, a perspective significantly removed from the traditional conception of his writings. It is important to emphasize that a philosophical component, close to certain secret societies such as Freemasonry, permeates the work of Verne and deserves further study.

A cor como espelho da sociedade e da cultura / Color as a mirror of society and culture: a study on the chromatic system of food packaging

Carla Patrícia de Araujo Pereira 28 March 2012 (has links)
Based on a theoretical referential which included art and design history, semiotics and cultural studies of color, this thesis supports the idea of color as language and cultural construction, observing its use in different systems of signification, in design and, particularly, in packaging design. The work starts from the evolution of visual language of packaging, observed between late 19th century and early 21st century, showing the changes occurred in design as an expression of the different moments of western society and visual culture, and bringing back the historical importance of colors in communication. Secondly, the work reviews the fundamentals of semiotics, transposing them to the approach of the color as a sign, and to the investigation of color language as a system. In order to explain the structural principles of this language, the meanings of colors and chromatic attributes are reviewed through bibliographical research. Through an empirical study, this thesis examines the chromatic language of contemporary packaging design, from a corpus of food packaging commercialized in Brazil. The results showed that the system of significations of color in packaging design leans both on the associative fields generated by the attributes of color -- hue, brightness and saturation -- and on the chromatic and semantic oppositions that such characteristics create. The study approach went beyond the structural analysis, involving simultaneously syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of color, trying to explain its use as a tool for the diffusion of ideas and values. It was observed that the colors assume visual, iconic, indexical and symbolic functions in the packaging communication. In the symbolic level, the most frequent senses assumed by the colors corresponded to different discourses which guide the contemporary food practices. The research showed that design communicates with other systems of signification and rescues, spreads out and reconstructs the color symbolism to construct images of quality, pureness, welfare, health, ecology and femininity, among others, reflecting ideological and cultural conceptions which have their place in contemporary life.

Dědinová, Lenka January 2011 (has links)

We want to reach this aim on the one side through the interpretation and the confrontation of the several philosophical thoughts and on the other side through the analysis of the novel work. This thesis is separated into four main chapters. In the first head we try to approach the effect of the economic development and the all-society transformation, that France passed through at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and especially after the First World War, that it had on the cultural life and the philosophical atmosphere. VOHRADSKÁ, Zuzana January 2017 (has links)
The core thesis is an attempt to contextual interpretation of fairy tales K. J. Erben from the perspective of theological anthropology. And in the context of the overall issue of fairy tales then they found values that can be picked up and interpreted in this way. The Lord of the Rings introduces reconstructive theory, because here it is the opposite. From the peculiar structure of the classic fairy tale, then based on its own interpretation. Dějiny spásy v symbolice byzantské liturgie sv. Jana Zlatoústého / The history of salvation in the symbology of the Byzantic liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom

FOGL, Jaroslav January 2007 (has links)
The thesis deals with the questions, how the Christians in the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom remind themselves the history of salvation and how they make the history of salvation present (i. e. anamnesis of the history of salvation) trough the symbols followed by the word. In the first part the author deals with the Christians symbolic acts in the liturgy as the symbolic acts express their relation to God. In the next part he pays attention to the process of the celebration of the liturgy of Saint John Chrisostom. These themes that describe symbolic acts of celebration are followed by the chapter that deals with the spiritual aspects of the liturgy. For a better orientation in the next text he closes the introductory part with the theological conception of the selected authors of the liturgical commentaries. In the main part of the thesis the author focuses on the history of the liturgy and on the liturgical commentaries of the selected authors of the Orthodox Christianity, who influenced the development of the Byzantine liturgy. Further, he focuses on the analysis of the present text of the liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, where he searches for the ways the anamnesis of the history of salvation is reached. In the final part of the work he presents the results of the analysis and concludes that the Jesus life is really reminded and made present in the particular parts of the Byzantine liturgy.
