Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / From a modest beginning and with limited program Boston Symphony Orohestra has grown to have surprising impact and demand not only in metropolitan Boston but over the nation and In Europe. The orchestra was established in 1882 through the inspiration of one man. Henry L. Higginson gave his money, time and business ability for its creation. Only four of the world's great orchestras etill in existence have seniority to the Boston Symphony Orchestra: London, Leipzig, Vienna and Paris. The main portion of this thesis will examine the various media of communication that have been and are now being used to bring the Boston Symphony Orchestra to public recognition and to analyse the part played by each in maintaining interest and support for the orchestra, with the degree of success maintained through the years, it is felt that a case study can be of value in the future to anyone who would have need of information ooncerning the forming or operation of an organisation of this type.

ABSTRACT There is a limited possibility for many of the concert-goers to go behind the stage and follow the work process with putting together a program for the concert season in a concert institution. The purpose of this study is to describe a concert institution's work with developing a concert program for each season. This is done through a presentation of the factors affecting the work. This is a descriptive essay and a case study of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Interviews have been made with people directly involved in the work or affected by the outcome of the work process. The results of the survey show that there are many opinions about the choice of repertoire and the program is greatly influenced by the chosen conductors and their preferences. The underlying repertoire ideology is a factor that permeates the work. The ideology and the view of symphony music as public education have to be compromised with the various interests involved in the working process. The survey also shows that the audience is not taken into account in the process as much as I expected before the survey. Key words: repertoire, symphony orchestra, concert, season, conductor

Since the late 20th century, transformation of the general environment has generated unprecedented challenges for symphony orchestras in Europe and America, such as audience development, fundraising, technology innovation, and market competition. Now, transplanted by the Western symphony orchestras, the symphony orchestras in Taiwan also face the most important task to deal with, and that is how to subsist. At the moment, professional symphony orchestras in Taiwan are mainly publicly-owned. The subject of this study will hence probe into the organizational legitimacy, organization positioning, and business strategy of publicly-owned symphony orchestras through analyzing both their external and internal environments as well as the results of in-depth interviews. On one hand, this study will provide an overview of the development of publicly-owned orchestras in Taiwan. On the other hand, it will offer new ways of thinking to orchestra managers and policy makers.

An examination of the role and musical development of the contrabassoon throughout the different periods. The study is being made through analyzing various common orchestra excerpts, both in themselves and in relation to the scores.
