Model-based Radiostereometric Analysis of an Uncemented Mobile-bearing Total Ankle Arthroplasty System

Fong, Jason 24 August 2010 (has links)
Model-based radiostereometric analysis (MBRSA) of a total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) prosthesis was studied for the first time. The TAA MBRSA system precision was determined from the double exams of 20 patients implanted with the Mobility(TM). The MTE for any direction was 0.07mm for the tibial component. The MTE was 0.09mm and the MRE was 0.51° for the talar component. The MTPM detection limits were 0.22mm and 0.85mm for the tibial and talar components. Both components followed the typical subsidence-stabilization pattern. There was little detectable continuous migration at one to two years. The median(range) MTPM at two years was 0.96mm(0.17-2.28mm) and 1.23mm(0.39-1.9 mm) for the tibial and talar components. There was no detectable inducible displacement observed for any components at two years, except one talar component. The median(range) MTPM induced by the loading at two years was 0.08mm(0.03-0.18mm) and 0.39mm(0.27-1.06mm) for the tibial and talar components.

Word-final imaala in contemporary Levantine Arabic : a case of language variation and change

Durand, Emilie Pénélope 12 July 2011 (has links)
The phenomenon of word-final imaala, or taa-marbuuTa raising, in the Levantine dialects of Arabic was well documented about 50 years ago by renowned Arabists who described the phenomenon as a purely phonological one. Today, after some major historical and sociological changes have taken place in Arab societies, this feature deserves to be revisited since this might shed some light on the processes of language change in those societies. The scope of this paper is to look into the issue of word-final imaala in contemporary Levantine Arabic (specifically after raa) through a wide lens, and to establish 1) whether there are patterns governing the production of taa marbuuTa after raa, and 2) whether the existing phonological rules account for all instances of word-final imaala as they appear in the speech of Levantine speakers nowadays. In order to do that, instances of all word tokens ending in -ra were extracted from 252 phone conversations recorded in 2004 and found in the LDC Levantine database. Those tokens were analyzed and the word-forms they represent were divided based on whether they exhibit any instances on word-final imaala. It soon became clear that the existing sound rules cannot account for all current instances of taa-marbouTa raising. Two main factors were identified as having a possible effect on the production of taa marbuuTa after raa: word frequency and phonological word classes. Because of a lack of speaker-related information in the database coupled with some imaala-related discrepancies found in the transcriptions of the conversations, it was impossible to determine the exact social meaning(s) of word-final imaala in Levantine communities. However, this study shows that enough changes have taken place since the 1960’s in terms of taa-marbuuTa raising, to consider it a case of language change in progress. This study also establishes some hypotheses which can be used as the base for a future sociolinguistic study whose scope will be to assign social meaning to word-final imaala in Levantine dialects. / text

The objective of this work was to study the effect of the water deficit applied on two bean cultivars, in the vegetative and reproductive phases, associated with the use of wastewater. The work was carried out at the Lageado Experimental Farm, in the Rural Engineering Department, belonging to the School of Agriculture of the Sao Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho", FCA / UNESP, campus of Botucatu / SP. The experiment was conducted from June to December 2016, the whole cycle in a greenhouse. A completely randomized design was used in a 2x2x3 factorial scheme. The first factor was two types of water for irrigation, potable (P) and residuary (R), the second two bean cultivars being an early cycle IAC emperor (C1) and one of normal cycle TAA Dama (C2), and the third were the water regimes used: a) Witness: where the plants were irrigated daily, throughout the cycle, maintaining the soil in the field capacity, whose value was -10kPa, corresponding to the water content in the soil, obtained from the Curve Soil Water Characteristics; b) Stress 1: with water deficit in the vegetative phase; and c) Stress 2: water deficit in the reproductive phase, making a total of twelve treatments with six replicates. Each replicate and / or experimental unit was represented by a vessel, totaling seventy-two experimental units. Plant development, production characteristics, water use efficiency and chemical changes in plant, grain and soil were evaluated. Based on the results and according to the experimental conditions it can be concluded that: The three factors influenced the development of the bean, mainly at the end of the cycle. Regarding the nutritional question, the residual water stood out in the contents of the plant tissue and grain. The soil has undergone changes in its fertility with the use of residuary water. There was no interaction of the factors for the evaluated production characters. Water stresses in the vegetative and reproductive phases influenced practically all evaluations, negatively interfering with development, bean production characteristics and nutrient content. The efficiency of water use by the crop has been affected by water stresses, resulting in decreases in productivity. / CAPES: 1491332

Multivariate Financial Time Series and Volatility Models with Applications to Tactical Asset Allocation / Multivariata finansiella tidsserier och volatilitetsmodeller med tillämpningar för taktisk tillgångsallokering

Andersson, Markus January 2015 (has links)
The financial markets have a complex structure and the modelling techniques have recently been more and more complicated. So for a portfolio manager it is very important to find better and more sophisticated modelling techniques especially after the 2007-2008 banking crisis. The idea in this thesis is to find the connection between the components in macroeconomic environment and portfolios consisting of assets from OMX Stockholm 30 and use these relationships to perform Tactical Asset Allocation (TAA). The more specific aim of the project is to prove that dynamic modelling techniques outperform static models in portfolio theory.

Currently, due to the benefits not restricted to common sense, but also listed from scientific research, they are in clinics, hospitals, schools and many others institutions. These studies gave itself two ways to call procedures involving animals with the purpose of taking care of human health: animal-assisted activities (AAA) and animal-assisted therapy (AAT) (DELTA SOCIETY, 2006) OBJECTIVE:Investigating the possible effects of the interaction speech therapyst-patient-dog in the operation of patients language with disturbances of language. The event set in the possibility of the device animal, in speech therapy setting, enhance the therapeutic process. METHOD: Clinical-quality research, developed in study of clinical cases mode. The ethical standards for research with humans and animals were obey.Casuistry: Three subjects, from sample unintentional: Jonas, 12; 0 years, male, with difficulties in writing / reading language; Lucas, 8; 0 years, male with school´s complaints related to difficulties in the written / reading language, summed the dismotivation for learning; Pedro, 4; 0 years, male with phonological changes that lead to segments of unintelligible speech, as well as complaints related to aggressive behavior. The animal participant was a dog without defined race (SDR), seven years old, female, selected in accordance with the criteria proposed by Aiello (DOTTI, 2005). Procedure: The clinical material was recorded in writing regularly and the sessions were recorded on digital camera bimonthly. The interpretation of the data came from theoretical benchmarks of anthropology, speech therapy, psychoanalysis and AAT. RESULTS: The AAT favored the interaction between therapist / patient, intensified the activity dialogical (LaFRANCE et al, 2007) the motivation to write and to read, the reduction of the problems manifest in writing (replacements / omissions grafemics, junction / separation misuse of words); besides mobilize the affectivity of the patients.CONCLUSION: The introduction of AAT as a therapeutic device shown to be effective in clinical cases studied. It is suggested therefore that the Speech Therapy participate more actively in this field of study, since the results corroborate the findings of research that suggests the effectiveness of AAT in various therapeutic environments / INTRODUÇÃO: Ao compartilhar nossas rotinas com os animais, estes passaram a fazer parte de nossa cultura ao ocupar diferentes papéis, para além da companhia.

Factors to consider when establishing an effective tax ombudsman in South Africa / Charles Ofori-Boateng

Ofori-Boateng, Charles January 2014 (has links)
This study examines the factors to consider in establishing an effective tax Ombudsman in South Africa. It seeks to establish how the democratic protection institutions such as the South African Public Protector and the South African Human Rights Commission and the Courts created in terms of the 1996 Constitution vis-à-vis the ways the South African Revenue Service‟ (hereinafter referred to as SARS) new court rules and Service Monitoring Offices safeguard and protect taxpayers rights against SARS‟ administrative abuses. The researcher reviews and analyses literature gathered from the following sources: the Australian and Canadian tax Ombudsman, the United Kingdom‟s tax adjudicator, the South African motor industry Ombudsman, the South African banking services Ombudsman, the South African Public Protector, the Tax Administration Act (28 of 2011) (hereinafter referred to as the TAA), the South African Constitution (108 of 1996), and other popular scientific articles and reports on the introduction of the tax Ombudsman in South Africa. The findings reveal the core factors that underscore the establishment of an effective tax Ombud in South Africa to include: independence, neutrality, credible review process and confidentiality. Other auxiliary factors with regard to the appointment of the tax Ombud are: leadership skills, honesty, integrity and courage. Furthermore, the provisions of the TAA, in relation to the appointment of the tax Ombud‟s funding, staffing, location, and powers with particular reference to cost recovery and disclosure of taxpayers‟ confidential information, impede on the tax Ombud‟s independence. It also emerged from this study that the independence of the tax Ombud‟s office is being over-emphasised, leaving other pertinent issues of equal importance, such as education and publicity, unattended to. The recommendations for this study revolve on the tax Ombud‟s appointment, budget and recruitment of its own staff, building a reputation of independence through public education and the power to recover costs. / MCom (South African and International Taxation), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
