Reframing Classroom Encounters: Teachers Making Sense of School Securitization

Willson, Melanie 18 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the discourses available to teachers in navigating and making sense of their role in the securitization of high schools. My analysis is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with nine teachers working in urban schools in Toronto. Drawing on frameworks from post-colonial, critical race, and urban education studies, I argue that school securitization is not just complicated by racism, but structured and enabled by it. While there is an urgent need to resist the implementation of particular security and surveillance measures that intensify the targeted disqualification of racialized youth, it is equally if not more important to uncover and resist the ways that racial thinking organizes a much wider range of classroom encounters and pedagogical practices. I urge teachers to interrogate their investments in the categories and subject positions that race thinking makes available, including those that are desirable and pleasurable.

Caring teacher-student relationships and the influence of teachers' identities: a grounded theory approach

Dooner, Anne-Marie 19 August 2014 (has links)
This study examines why teachers sometimes struggle to develop caring relationships with their students, despite their intention to do so. To do this, the notion of caring relationships (Mayeroff, 1971) is explored, as well as the influence of teachers’ emotions on these dynamics. The study also examines environmental factors in schools that influence caring teacher-student relationships. In all, fourteen teachers with early, middle, and senior years experience participated in two focus-groups each, and seven of these participants were interviewed individually. Because this study adopts a grounded theory approach, the coding of data is foundational to the data analysis. More specifically, open (Charmaz, 2006; Glaser, 1978), focused (Charmaz, 2006), and selective coding (Glaser, 1978) are used to identify the emergent categories in the data, and how they interrelate with each other. Theoretical coding (Charmaz, 2006; Glaser, 1978) is used to link emergent categories to extant literature to further develop the study’s conceptualization. The findings suggest that teachers’ emotions and more specifically, fear, guilt, and shame, reflect the dissonance that they sometimes experience as they align their idealized views of themselves with their roles in their teaching (McCall & Simmons, 1978). Building on earlier work by Beijaard (1995) and Nias (1989, 1996), this study’s findings suggest that teachers rely primarily on their students to gauge their success in their role and their identities as teachers. Also, teachers’ competitive relationships with their colleagues often reflect their unintentional attempts to protect their relationships with students from the influences of other adults, so as to safeguard their students as their primary source of role support. This not only raises questions about the caring nature of teachers’ relationships with their students (Mayeroff, 1971), but it also underscores the fact that teachers’ collaboration in schools is frequently superficial in quality. This study also suggests that teachers tend to isolate themselves in their classrooms and have little awareness of how their responses to their emotions in teaching influence their caring relationships with students. Finally, the findings indicate that school administrators can act as important role support for teachers as they develop caring relationships with their students.

MudanÃas no letramento acadÃmico de cursistas do ProfLetras: questÃes de linguagem e identidade

Roberta GleyciÃngela Souza Lopes 21 December 2016 (has links)
Our motivation for this thesis comes from the fact that we teach in basic education, and became familiarized with the issue of academic literacy in a course by dr. Izabel MagalhÃes in the M.A. Course in Linguistics. In addition to literacy, we are also committed to set up a profile of teachers and their practices. Both the Social Theory of Literacy and Critical Discourse Analysis helped us in this regard. We are particularly committed to answering the following question: being a new mechanism of continuing education, how far does the Professional MasterÂs Program impact on teacher identities? The main purpose of this work is then to pull together findings that directly address this question, reporting on data from teachers who are enrolled on the Professional MasterÂs Program (Profletras). Given the limitation of any textual analysis vis-Ã-vis the need to take up seriously social features, we adopted ethnography as a methodology that would generate the data required. This methodology was necessary because it allowed for a useful triangulation for intensifying and ensuring all the qualifying procedures related to teachers interviews as well as participant observation. This enquiry follows previous research by Social Theory of Literacy scholars (STREET, 1984; 2003; 2010; 2012; 2014; BARTON and HAMILTON, 1998; BARTON, HAMILTON and IVANIC, 2000), and Critical Discourse Analysis according to Fairclough (2001, 2003). Other investigations show the compatibility between both theories (MAGALHÃES, 1995; RIOS, 2009; SATO, 2013; BATISTA JR, 2013, FONTENELE, 2014). With the Social Theory of Literacy at hand, we described some literacy events within the Professional MasterÂs Course and relate them to literacy practices, which in turn involve social and cultural dimensions, such as values, attitudes, feelings and social relations. And with the help of Critical Discourse Analysis, we analyzed the meanings of identity, by means of the categories of modality and evaluation, both related to speaker assumptions. The analysis revealed continuing and widening literacy practices among the participants under analysis, in part due to reading, writing and discussing about texts which were presented to teachers by the Professional MasterÂs Course. In the context of these changes, we observed a redefinition and reconstruction of the teachers social identities.

Identidades docentes: reflexões sobre disposições, saberes e formação continuada / Faculty identities: reflections on arrangements, acquired knowledge and continuous training

Nunweiler, Kety Cristina 10 June 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the identity construction process of basic education teachers who work in the final years of elementary school and who also participate in on-site continued education programs. With this purpose in mind, we base our rational on the premise that teachers\' identities are built throughout a trajectory and are marked by individual traits and knowledge that result from socializing experiences that come about in different contexts. We also emphasize that these identities are not free from the duality that exists between the individuals self image and the image attributed to him/her by the group / institution. This research adopts a sociological perspective and uses the composition of sociological portraits as a methodological device. Our research subjects were five teachers, all of whom work in the municipal education network of São Paulo and who have been in their profession for more than 5 years. Theoretically, we dialogue with the studies of Claude Dubar, Bernard Lahire, Carlos Marcelo, Maurice Tardif, Clermont Gauthier, Selma Garrido Pimenta, and Francisco Imbérnon, among others. The results reveal that in the subjects\' social trajectory, different factors contributed to their profession and the development of their knowledge on teaching. However, we observe that on-site continued training enhances this knowledge, insofar as interaction favors the objectification of knowledge garnered from experience, and can also be a context that contributes to constituting collective dispositions. We conclude that the teacher identities of these professionals are marked mainly by factors related to learning and the lessons garnered from experience

Competing professional identities in contemporary early childhood teacher education

Krieg, Susan January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is a qualitative case study of curriculum change within a contemporary Australian university. The curriculum change involved a repositioning of early childhood teacher education into a course structure that would qualify teachers to work across both the early childhood and primary years. The study explores the ways some of the institutional social practices of a university at a particular socio historic moment constructed ways of 'being' for the people involved in the change process. In particular, the research investigates language as a social practice within the university and focuses on the ways university curriculum texts privileged some discourses over others, legitimating particular versions of teaching and excluding others.

Teachers living with AIDS : underplaying the role of emotions in the implementation of HIV/AIDS policy in Zimbabwean primary schools

Machawira, Patricia 22 April 2009 (has links)
This study explores how HIV-positive teachers within a specific social context understand, interpret and act on HIV and Life Skills policy. My aim was to illuminate the experiences of teachers living with AIDS and how their experiences affect the ways in which they understand and act on government policy. As a constructivist, I worked on the premise that people’s experiences can best be understood by interacting with them and listening to them. I chose a narrative research design because it allowed me to explore and understand the perceptions and complexity of my research partners’ experiences, and to faithfully present and represent the stories told by teachers living with AIDS. I used the data collected from the teachers’ stories to write narratives that gave a first person account of the experiences of each teacher. To express my own voice in the text I created a column on the side of each page where I recorded my own experience of the process of the inquiry. I used inductive analysis in order to make sense of the field data. Rather than beginning with a theory, inductive analysis allowed me to expose the dominant and significant themes in the raw data without imposing preconceptions on the data. Three distinct themes emerged from the analysis, and formed my conceptualisation of the experiences of teachers living with AIDS: a) conflict between teacher as role model and ideal citizen, and teacher as an HIV-positive person; b) HIV illness and its impact on the body of the teacher; c) teachers as emotional actors. The main findings from the study suggest that in a context with AIDS there are limits to what education policy can achieve if it remains out of touch with a real world in which school is attended by children and teachers whose bodies are either infected or affected by the HIV virus. This is substantiated by the fact that while the HIV/AIDS policy is about bodies and about emotions, it is blind to the bodies and the emotions of those implementing it. I contend that it is this oversight that creates the wide gap between policy intentions and outcomes. Secondly the study highlights the uniqueness of HIV/AIDS education policy and its implementation which, unlike other education policies, powerfully brings to the fore the emotions of the implementers. I conclude the study by suggesting that the policy-making process be reconstructed to inscribe the real bodies and real emotions of the teachers into the policy, to shift from a purely prevention mode to one that looks at the whole prevention-to-care continuum and acknowledges that a significant majority of school pupils and teachers are infected and affected. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted
