This curent disertation was developed within the Coordenadoria Distrital 03, advisory organ of SEDUC/AM. The Objective is to analyze the process of the curriculum revision in the component of the Portuguese language and the cycle of the elementary teaching. The participation in the development of the curriculum has aroused interest, with a view of concern about the quality of the Brazilian basic education, because the "duel" between the prescribed curriculum and practice, stresses the neccessity for the involvement of individuals, interested in the curriculum proposals successfully implemented. The relevance of this study lies in the reflection on the involvement of actors performing the curriculum in practice, mainly: the teacher. The assumption of this investigation, confirmed during the research is the need for strategies for the involvement of teachers in implementing the curriculum adjustments in this coordinating body. Based on a methodology of quality nature which primarily involves documents research, focusing on the official documents that guide curriculum change; the literature that emphasizes the study of curriculum and lastly the field research with a series of semi-structured interviews aimed at managers and pedagogues in two different schools as well as to eight regents teachers in the classroom of the 1st to 3rd year. The development of theoretical research framework is represented by authors who have recognized contribution in the field of public politics, analysis articulating various issues that provide the understanding of curriculum and its implementation, emphasizing the process of recontextualization, among them Mainardes (2006); Lopes (2004); Sacristan (1998); Moreira and Candau (2007).The survey results showed that there is no politics of formation of the initial and continuing implementation of curricular proposals for the involvement of teachers, but isolated actions that are not complementary and interconnected hindering the attendance of basic demands for not overseeing the specificities of the different existing realities at Schools. In this sense, it was presented an Educational Action Plan, proposing actions to minimize the aspects that can hinder the implementation of the prescribed curriculum, in particularly, the teaching engagement with the curriculum, such as interscholastic continuing education and production of an educational notebook to serve to support the teacher's lessons.

Onderwyserbetrokkenheid by kurrikulering in die primêre skool

De Wet, William Christoffel 10 February 2014 (has links)
D.Ed. (Curriculum Studies) / The subject of this research was defined as : the devising of strategies for increased teacher involvement in curriculum development, with a view to improving the quality of education. This effort to develop a paradigm for curriculum development showed that such a paradigm should be constructed using both philosophical and relevant procedural points of departure. Study of the literature and of personal correspondence received from developed countries indicated that the teacher should only be expected to participate in those areas of curriculum development which correspond to his training. In developed countries aspirant teachers receive training, not only in curriculum development at the microlevel (lesson planning), but also to equip them for involvement in curriculum development on the mesolevel. Training for the latter activity involves the acquisition of specific knowledge and skills in the field of curriculum development...

The new curriculum and teacher performance.

Morgan, Nicolette Genevive 14 October 2008 (has links)
M.Ed. / This research dissertation sought to discover how teachers have interacted with the New Curriculum, it is, the newly designed Curriculum 2005 (C2005) and the subsequent Revised New Curriculum Statement that featured in the educational realm in South Africa in recent years. It was an attempt at discovering both the mental and physical attributes that teachers conveyed whilst implementing the Curriculum. The qualitative research approach was used in the study, which allowed for an in-depth insight into the day to day successes or failures that both teachers and learners experienced in the classroom. With the use of the interview guide, responses that surfaced, gave the researcher the opportunity to divulge further into the weaknesses or strengths that the New Curriculum possesses. The researcher discovered through this study that there were many controversial issues that surrounded the implementation of the New Curriculum. Thus, the focus remained on the how the most important stakeholders, the teachers, expressed their views pertaining to the Curriculum. The study provided evidence that suggests that teachers need to and should be included in all curriculum planning processes. / Dr. M.C. van Loggerenberg

Teacher professional development and communities of practice

Hirtz, Janine Renee Marie 05 1900 (has links)
The larger research project seeks to examine the role of technology and factors that influence its overall use and efficacy in supporting a community of teachers engaged in professional development. This thesis examines factors that appear to influence teacher participation in the online community of practice engaging in an overarching research project conducted by Dr. Balcaen and a team from UBC O Faculty of Education and funded by the Southern Alberta Professional Development Consortium (SAPDC). The two groups are acting in partnership for supporting and sustaining communities of practice in social studies in southern Alberta. SAPDC is allowing teachers release time to engage in the project while TC² is providing professional development for the participant teachers to become proficient at embedding TC² critical thinking tools into their classroom practices. Various technologies are used during this study as part of the design of providing professional development for the participants including supporting an online community presence. The guiding question for this thesis is: In a blended approach of face-to-face and online supported professional development for embedding critical thinking into the new social studies curriculum, what significant factors appear to influence teacher participation in the online community of practice during the first year of the project? Overall results during the first year of this project show that various technologies used during the project are valuable and effective in nurturing this community of practice by enabling and promoting collaboration, communication, and the completion and delivery of products to be used in teaching the new curriculum. I also examine negative factors that appear to prevent some teachers’ technology use and online participation and collaboration during this project. Findings show that there are several significant factors that influence participation in the online community and while some participants are reluctant to engage or enter the online environment, others have emerged as leaders and play a significant role in building and sustaining the community of practice. These results provide critical information about implementing and integrating an online component and using technology to sustain communities of practice engaged in this form of teacher professional development. / Education, Faculty of (Okanagan) / Graduate

Beginner teachers’ leadership development opportunities: an interventionist case study in a rural combined school in the Ohangwena region, Namibia

Ndakolonkoshi, Klaudia January 2018 (has links)
The emergence of distributed leadership theory encourages multiple involvement of individuals in leadership of the school, regardless of their leadership positions (Spillane, 2006). The manifestation of teacher leadership through distributed leadership theory grants opportunities to teachers to enact leadership roles. This study explored how the notion of teacher leadership is understood, the leadership roles existing for the beginner teachers, and the constraining and enabling factors to the practice of teacher leadership in a rural combined school in Ohangwena region, in Namibia. The study is a formative intervention adopting a case study approach located in a critical paradigm since it aimed to bring changes in the activity system of the beginner teachers. The data were collected from ten participants: four beginner teachers, four experienced teachers, the principal and the Head of Department. The data were generated using the following techniques: document analysis, interview, questionnaires, observation and Change Laboratory workshops. The data were analysed thematically using second generation of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) and Grant’s (2006, 2008, 2010) Teacher Leadership Model. The findings revealed that there were different understandings of the concept of teacher leadership. It was viewed as participation, influence, motivation and mentoring. It was also revealed that beginner teachers practiced leadership roles across the four zones of Grant’s (2006, 2008, 2010) Teacher Leadership Model, but to various extents. A high participation was noted in zone one within the classroom and zone two in curricular and extra-curricular activities and minimal participation was reported in zone three within the whole school development and zone four beyond the school into the community. Teacher leadership in the case study school was constrained by several factors, including teachers’ reluctance to lead, cultural beliefs, top-down leadership structure and lack of experience. Due to the minimal participation of beginner teachers in zone three and four, the findings suggested that the school should foster a collaborative culture, establish induction and mentoring committees in the school and encourage beginner teachers to take up leadership roles by providing opportunities for them to lead through delegation. In a series of Change Laboratory workshops (CLW) the principal and the Head of Department took up the responsibility of providing leadership training to the teachers to enable them to assume leadership roles in the school. In addition, participants agreed to establish induction and mentoring committees in the school to provide guidance and assistance to teacher leaders.

Faculty Participation in University Governance

Battles, Judith Pruett 12 1900 (has links)
This study attempts to examine the conception which faculty members at North Texas State University have of their roles in university governance. These views of role perception are then compared with those reported in the study by Archie Dykes5 (discussed in detail in Chapter III), whose findings were made at a large Midwestern university and then projected to other campuses across the country. The purpose of this research has not been to delve into all the reasons behind the various perceptions which faculty members on the North Texas campus--or any other--have regarding their participation in university governance; nor has it been designed to investigate the total occupational image held by faculty members in regard to all their roles. While such topics would indeed be worthy of additional research, this paper simply attempts to uncover, assess empirically, and compare the perceptions regarding faculty involvement in academic decision-making which are held by faculty members on the North Texas State University campus and in the Dykes' study.

The learning processes teachers in rural schools engage in during policy implementation

Msomi, Nkosiyephana Wilfred 06 August 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / The research study focused on how teachers respond to policy demands given the challenges of rural education and dominating policy discourses and how their professional learning is shaped by these conditions and limitations. In particular I wanted to learn and document what and how teachers learn as they engage in Integrated Quality Management Systems. This study was conducted because there is an outcry of poor examinations results in some rural schools, which could be linked to poor implementation of policies. To respond to this outcry the Teacher Learning Framework which could be used by teachers was developed. The investigation into teacher learning processes when they engage in policy implementation was designed as an interpretive ethnographic study and was conducted in a disadvantaged rural primary school in Ladysmith, in KwaZulu Natal, in South Africa. The study involved five teachers and it was undertaken as an action research study in two cycles. The purpose of cycle one was to verify how teachers presented lessons in terms of policy requirements and guidelines, and authenticate how they learn in the process about their teaching, learners, themselves, and policy requirements. Lessons conducted by teachers were observed and the reflections were also made by two teachers. This was done also as a strategy to gather data. In cycle one, data revealed that teachers were not in a position to implement what they planned to implement. Teachers gave themselves time to plan for cycle two in order to improve on the shortcomings in cycle one. Teachers appeared to have prepared their lessons well, involving learners. Some teachers indicated clear lessons steps which were followed in the classroom. Even before they went to teach in class, they discussed their lessons plans which contributed to the improvement in cycle two. As a process of data gathering, five teachers were interviewed. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed. As a second level of data analysis which was towards developing the Teacher Professional Learning Framework, all the data types were visited with the aim of extracting and discovering codes and categories across data types. These codes and categories were used in a more thorough grounded analysis to formulate a Teacher Professional Learning Framework.
