Student Perception of Professors’ Teaching Attributes in Post-Secondary Hospitality Management Degree Programs

Unknown Date (has links)
This study describes how undergraduate students in their junior and senior year seeking a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management at a regionally accredited university perceive their professors’ instructional attributes and behaviors. This examination concentrated on two critical zones of discernment concerning professors’ instructional practices. Participants were asked what teaching attributes contributed to their academic success, and teaching attributes did not contribute to their academic success. The study also sought to identify any obstacles faced by the participating undergraduate students and their faculty as indicators of how to mitigate such obstacles. This study included a review of an extensive collection of research on student perspectives and how those perspectives may reflect on the evaluation of the adequacy of various teaching techniques and academic practices. This study found that the instructional attributes that participating students reported that they value include: agreeableness (concern and regard for students), accommodation (accessibility), and receptiveness to others’ conclusions (support of class inquiries and exchange), yet all instructors do not exhibit each of these attributes. This study identified the positive teaching characteristics of professors in one setting and how these professors interact with their students in a manner that captures students’ attention and promotes teaching and learning in the classroom. It also suggests attributes that professors in this setting and discipline may wish to elevate to better connect with students in the classroom. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Conceptions of and Motivation for Teaching in Higher Education: An Interview Study among Participants in a Teaching Certificate Program

Vorndran, Patricia January 2014 (has links)
In response to increasing evidence of the need for better preparation for those teaching in higher education, more and more professional development programs are being established to provide faculty and future faculty with pedagogical expertise. The aim of this study was to inform the development and improvement of such programs by analyzing participants' experiences in a teaching in higher education preparation program and developing a conceptual model of motivation for teaching in higher education. Fifteen graduate student instructors who completed a teaching in higher education certificate program at a large, urban university were interviewed using a narrative approach. An initial model based on Personal Investment Theory (Maehr and Braskamp, 1986) was further elaborated on, with the resultant model highlighting the dynamic interplay of teachers' beliefs, purposes, self-perceptions and teaching strategies. The analysis using the model revealed four distinct profiles reflecting diverse motivations and experiences in the professional development (PD) program. These profiles were labeled "The Unchanged," "The Practice Seekers," "The Enlightened," and "The Integrated." The analysis using the model also revealed an array of themes that highlight similarities and differences in participants' construction of their PD experience. These similarities and differences provide insight into the motivational processes that facilitate the formation of teaching identity. Themes that emerged fell into five categories: diversity in self-perceptions, individual differences in component emphasis, variability in utilization of action possibilities, variability in alignment, and variability in change. This emergent model can provide a conceptual tool for future research, as well as a guide for evaluating and designing effective PD for graduate student instructors, and potentially faculty. / Educational Psychology

What college students think about their teachers?: a study on professors of undergraduate courses at the Federal University of Goiás - campus Jataí

Oliveira, Camila Alberto Vicente de 05 December 2013 (has links)
The number of researches that have the training and practice of the University Professor as an object of study has currently increased. Based on this background, the present Ph. D. thesis, bounded by the research line of Didactic methods, pedagogical theories and school practices, aimed to contribute to a reflection on teaching practice in higher education, seen through the eyes of college students towards their teachers. It intended also to identify the profile of these students, what bond they have with their course, the meanings they attribute concerning their initial training and the processes used in teaching procedures at the University that may contribute to their learning. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied to entering and graduating students of academic degrees in all areas of knowledge offered at the Universidade Federal de Goiás Campus Jataí (CAJ/UFG); and a group interview has been developed with some students of these courses. After data collection, analysis and discussion, we noticed that the CAJ/UFGs undergraduate has both a profile that meets the info provided by the Census of Higher Education (2011) and has chosen the academic license as a first option in order to get initial training in an area of interest. That student attaches significant value to the current attended degree course, believing that it is where the basis for the own future teaching performance lies; that student also considers a good teacher the one who dominates and ensures conditions for the content transmission, and on the other hand, a bad teacher the one who neither respects the students nor understands their difficulties. CAJ/UFGs undergraduate maintains a good relationship with the teacher, but reveals that the teaching methodologies which promote their learning in advance are those in which you can participate actively. In testimonies collected, students also reveal the difficulties faced in the relationship with their teachers and the distance between what they are taught and the reality of the elementary school, upholding, in some cases, the pedagogical training for the end of the course. We conclude, by advocating based on what students think about their teachers the reconfiguration of the students role in the teaching processes at the University: becoming coauthor in this formative work.

The relevance of EAP for success at university: a study of student perspectives

Sanders, R. Frank Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
Australia has been striving to increase the number of international full fee paying students at its universities and as a result, foundation studies programs (FSPs) have been developed to ensure that these students have the best chance of succeeding at said universities. These programs comprise many elements. Some, like History of Ideas and Western Literature, provide foreign students with the educational background expected of all students pursuing tertiary studies in western universities. Others, like English for Academic Purposes (EN) provide the everyday skills needed for success at university. This trend raises the question: Are current EAP courses meeting the academic needs of international students when it comes to succeeding at university? And, if they are not, what can be done to these EAP courses? Traditionally, decisions about student needs (needs analysis) have been left to the teachers and researchers in the field. However, this study looks at a relatively new way of evaluating the success of EAP courses: It asks the students themselves what has or has not been helpful about their EAP course with regard to their university studies.

In contemporary society the activities in the classroom have been revised in order to integrate the new technologies with reflexive and more participative activities. This research is based on the assumption that video can be used as didactic material in higher education classes, producing a dynamic and mobilizing learning. In order to do this, the following research question is taken: how does the teacher perceive the use of video as a didactic-pedagogical resource in teaching practices in higher education, specifically in undergraduate programs? This is a qualitative research that considers research already carried out, as well as the analysis of a questionnaire applied to undergraduate teachers in order to understand the teacher's perception of the use of video as a didactic-pedagogical resource in teaching practices in higher education . As a theoretical basis, the studies of Freire, Machado, Moran, Kenski and Levy will be used and the studies of Franco, Pimenta, Sacristán and Libâneo will be used to substantiate the didactic-pedagogical question. The research already analyzed has indicated that the pedagogical use of video can produce innovations in teaching practice and have indicated that the activities of collective dialogue and reflection are fundamental to make the video a didactic-pedagogical instrument, with favorable reflections to students' learning. The objective is to understand teachers' perception about the use of video as a didactic-pedagogical resource in classes in undergraduate courses. A review of the literature was made, from the perspective of Alda Judith Alves-Mazzotti, in which it was evidenced that for the video to function as a didactic resource, there is a need to consider aspects related to the adequate training of professionals, institutional conditions that value the teacher and didactic organization of the content opening spaces for the constructive dialogue between the material and the apprentices.

Utilização das tecnologias da informação e comunicação, no contexto da web 2.0, na prática docente na educação superior / Use of information technology and communication in the context f web 2.0 in teaching practice in higher education

Calheiros, Dawson da Silva 01 September 2009 (has links)
The use of Information and Communication Technologies constitutes pedagogical possibilities even more applied in the educational field. It shows a great expansion in the use of digital media and Web 2.0 services through collaborative tools that enable communication and collective formation of knowledge, recreating the traditional roles of professors and students. Based on this scenario, this research investigates the use of the Web 2.0 resources in the pedagogical practice of bachelor s degree professors from the possibilities offered by these tools of technology in the educational environment and through important factors in this process, such as the interaction and collaboration, it is also investigated whether the use of Web 2.0 helps develop cognitive skills in professors and students who use it. The locus of the research involved four schools in the Centro de Estudos Superiores de Maceió: School of Biological Sciences and Health, School of Applied Sciences and Technology, School of Education and Communication and School of Applied Social Sciences. The ones involved were the professors who teach in undergraduate courses at that institution, as well as students of these professors. The methodology used was the case study with a qualitative approach. Being the object of the study are the possibilities of collaboration tools for students and professors, which Web 2.0 features are being used on teaching practice, causes of non-use of tools, the results achieved by those who have included them in their subjects and content of Web 2.0 services and the development of cognitive skills for cyber-education. The results indicate that most professors still do not use the web 2.0 in their practice for reasons such as lack of time or they were not trained. They also indicate that using Web 2.0 in the educational context, professors and students develop cognitive skills that are essential to a good education, where collaboration and interaction are present. The research suggests that institutions of higher education must adopt policies for access and technical and teaching training for educators involved in the context of the new educational reality so more dynamic, interactive classes and real learning will be generated / A utilização das Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação constitui possibilidades pedagógicas cada vez mais recorrentes no contexto educacional.
