An attempt to represent geometrically the imaginary of algebra

Tobias, Ruth K. January 1987 (has links)
In 1981 the author submitted that "many of the (then) more recent school syllabuses remain disjointed and give expression still to a school mathematics course as step-by-step progression through a list of disparate topics". The position has not changed. It is not yet generally accepted that there can no longer be an accepted body of mathematical knowledge that needs to be taught. The rapid development of new technology and the introduction of the microcomputer should enable the 'modern' mathematics of the early 1960's to enhance the mathematical experiences of pupils in a practical and comprehensible way and prompt a new style of teaching and learning mathematics. There is, however, a fundamental core of mathematics which must inevitably find a place in the school mathematics curriculum. In Part I of the thesis the emphasis is on a method of presentation of certain key topics which illustrate the basic pattern of a group structure. Former complications at school level of putting plane geometry on a logical footing have to be avoided. The use of complex numbers highlights significant and sometimes rather difficult geometrical ideas. In Part 11 the author attempts to show how some of these ideas may be presented to extend the basic pattern to that of linear algebra. The work culminates in Part III with the use of linear complex algebra to present more vividly the symmetries of the Platonic solids. The author anticipates the realistic presentation of the aesthetic side of 3-dimensional geometry and takes a look at its possible presentation through the medium of the microcomputer. At this early stage of the development of the ideas to be discussed, there can be no formal testing of the results by quantitative analysis. Evaluation of the viability of the proposals will be qualitative and the comments of 'critical academic friends' will be included. The originality demanded of a piece of research goes beyond the exposition. Here it will consist of new insights into ideas appropriate to senior pupils in schools and a rewriting of existing material often thought to be beyond their scope. The work is supported by suggested lesson sequences, transcripts of recorded presentations, and examples of students' work. Subsequent development must face the question of assessment and evaluation at sixth-form level of the proposed new style of teaching mathematics. The author makes some suggestions in the concluding chapter.

Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T12:18:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Jozeildo Jose da Silva.pdf: 1899979 bytes, checksum: 1ca1f7cba3df0db178cad43476390e57 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-10-24 / This dissertation aims to investigate the use of software Ruler and Compass as a methodological resource for teaching geometry. The study was on theoretical base the Van Hielle‟s Model, the Meaningful Learning Theory (AUSUBEL, 2003) and the Construcionist Theory (PAPERT, 1994) linked to studies on the Dynamic Geometry (ZULATTO, 2002; GRAVINA, 1996, Cowper, 1994). The research was based on the difficulty of identifying and exploiting these properties in geometric patterns observed in static printed material such as textbooks. The research universe was formed for two public schools and one of these schools the research was conducted with students and in other school the research was conducted with teachers. The research involved a multiple case study using participant observation was conducted in two stages. The target audience of the research was formed by students of the 7th year of elementary school and teachers math of public schools. The results of the research show that there is an enormous need regarding the teaching of geometry founded on the manipulation of geometric figures to explore their properties and elements. The research also revealed that from the use of the software Ruler and Compass students have become more interactive and that during use they were challenged to conjecture, validate hypothesis and verify properties present in geometric figures. The study allowed us to observe that most of the teachers participating in the research are considered prepared for the use of new technologies in teaching mathematics, but that the school needs to adapt to such developments.

O ensino das geometrias não-euclidianas: um olhar sob a perspectiva da divulgação científica / Teaching non-euclidean geometries: a view from the perspective of scientific popularization

Ribeiro, Renato Douglas Gomes Lorenzetto 14 September 2012 (has links)
This paper investigates the teaching possibilities of fundamental ideas of the non- Euclidean geometries under the perspective of scientific popularization and identifies the main characteristics in the teaching of these geometries. This bibliographical research justifies scientific theory, non-formal education, and the teaching of non-Euclidean geometries. In relation to various geometries, we have emphasized the historical process of its emergence, in particular attempts to prove Euclid\'s fifth postulate since this process shows a paradigm in mathematical knowledge, including the concept of mathematical truth. On the teaching of geometry, we have discussed its inclusion in the curriculum of basic education and the growing number of references to the subject in official educational guidelines, both in Brazil and abroad. We have tried to understand the goals of educators who purport to teach non- Euclidean geometries and realized that these goals do not connect solely to the assumption that learning of Euclidean geometry becomes significant when it provides the contact with non-Euclidean geometries. We have mapped some of the studies with teaching experiences of geometries and listed their successes. The analysis of the research that reports case studies focused on the resources normally used, on the main assumptions, and on chosen audiences. In the analyzed research, we have encountered a strong presence of Spherical Geometry and Hyperbolic Geometry, mainly approached via concrete materials and dynamic geometry pieces of software, respectively. The teaching possibility of basic principles of the non- Euclidean geometries for different publics became evident.

Professores de matemática na educação de jovens e adultos: o pensamento geométrico no centro das atenções / Teachers of mathematics in the education of youngsters and adults: the geometric thought in the center of attentions

Santana, Ivanilde da Conceição 21 May 2010 (has links)
The current qualitative research aims at answering the following question: what are the tensions and reactions of the mathematics teachers who dwell in the Education of Youngsters and Adults, in light of situations of teaching-learning geometry from the knowledge built by the student along his life/work? Therefore, we approached the teachers who work with Education of Youngsters and Adults in public schools from São Paulo, both, through questionnaires and dialogue, talking about their expectations and pedagogical posture from reflexive questions about the Education of Youngsters and Adults and the teaching of geometry. The results of the research indicated, among other aspects, that although the teaching of geometry is not adequately outlined in the working plans of Education of Youngsters and Adults, still the teachers participating in the study demonstrated that they were aware of their importance and of the possible contributions of their teachings. In this perspective, the little experience with the pedagogical practice of geometry combined with the dominance of school mathematics seem to lead to an obstacle when the teachers try to elaborate activities relating geometry with the daily life of the student. The analysis of the manifestations indicates that the efforts of the teachers in the search to recognize/respect the previous knowledge of the students are full of tension and anxiety given the expectation of the necessity to contextualize/problematize the teaching of geometry from the reality of the adult student.
