Previous issue date: 2008-02-27 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / Today s competitive business environment requires companies to change at a quick pace and in this scenario, organizational learning achieves a significant role as a tool designed to ensure companies can achieve differentiated performance compared to their competitors. As a result, organizational players are aware that the differential to be targeted is to understand the learning processes taking place at an individual, team and organizational level. By understanding these learning processes, they can manage them so that people and organizations can benefit from this approach.
This paper seeks to identify the influences from Individual Learning both for Team and Organizational Learning and how Team Learning influences Organizational Learning to understand how learning takes place throughout an organization. Our investigation has a quantitative approach, using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) methodology software Smart PLS2.0 M3, in four companies operating in the Brazilian market and different business segments, ranging from health care through services to automakers. Results from our investigation show that Individual Learning influences both Team Learning and Organizational Learning, just as Team Learning influences Organizational Learning, while having specific differences in each company, even for those operating in the same business segment. / Os mercados competitivos exigem das organizações ritmo acelerado de transformações. Nesse contexto dinâmico de informações, a aprendizagem organizacional tem seu papel relevante, na medida em que ela potencializa a capacidade de manter as empresas em condições diferenciadas, quando comparadas com seus concorrentes. Cresce, desse modo, a consciência dos atores organizacionais, sobre o diferencial a ser perseguido na compreensão dos processos de aprendizagem em níveis individuais, grupais e organizacionais e sua gestão para que pessoas e empresas deles se beneficiem. Este trabalho procura identificar as influências da Aprendizagem Individual tanto na Aprendizagem Grupal quanto na Organizacional e da Aprendizagem Grupal na Organizacional para entender como a aprendizagem se processa pela organização. A investigação de natureza quantitativa utilizou a metodologia do Partial Least Squares (PLS) software Smart PLS2.0 M3 aplicado em quatro empresas, atuantes no mercado nacional em segmentos de negócios distintos, desde a área da saúde, passando pelo segmento de serviços e até o automobilístico. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a Aprendizagem Individual influencia a Aprendizagem Grupal e a Organizacional. Do mesmo modo, a Aprendizagem Grupal influencia a Aprendizagem Organizacional, com diferenciações particulares para cada uma das empresas, mesmo aquelas atuantes no mesmo segmento de negócios.

Previous issue date: 2013-02-26 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / The objective of this thesis is to understand the learning processes that occur in crossfunctional groups in a perspective of Advanced Planning Product Quality (APQP) in automotive companies. The specific objectives seeks to identify and describe the constitution process of cross-functional groups and its relationship to learning; identify and describe the methodologies used inside cross-functional groups and its relationship to learning; identify, describe and discuss the factors that difficult the learning process inside cross-functional groups; identify, describe and discuss the factors that facilitate the learning process of crossfunctional groups and identify, describe and discuss the moments which there was evidence of group and collective learning. The theoretical framework proposed is designed of individual and collective learning developed by Nancy Dixon and team learning from the perspective developed especially in studies of Amy C. Edmondson and colleagues. The field research was developed in a qualitative, descriptive and interpretative way. It is also considered exploratory
because the phenomenon of learning in work groups has been a topic that reveals little knowledge accumulated and systematized. Considering that research begins with a
contextual-interpretive perspective, was proposed as the method qualitative case-study to observe, explore, interpret, understand and discuss issues related to learning processes. In order to achieve the proposed objectives and answer the research question, respondents were members of cross-functional groups of two distinct organizations (Alfa and Beta), three groups per company, totaling nineteen interviewees. Moreover, the non-participant observation is also a strategy to collect data. In order to structure, organize and analyze the
data, was employed the templates analysis method, offered by Nigel King, that consist in the use of a priori codes derived from the theoretical framework. The results showed that, since there is psychological safety established, both team and collective learning occurs when the entire group, converging the members conflicts and discussions on consensus. Furthermore, the learning process is facilitated since the group constitution, mainly due to the mobility of its members, the manager's role as a catalyst of information, working methodologies employed in the two organizations, the Transitive Memory Systems, the "corridors", the practice of consulting the functional areas by its members, the existence of international forums, the actual physical arrangement of the companies surveyed, the moral support practiced in the core community, the investment of financial resources for the development of ideas members, the recognition of the expertise of the members, learning through practice of
collective work, the willingness of participants to learning, among others. The indications for future studies encompass elements as macro-organizational culture and meso-organizational diversity and its influence on group learning, which are also limiting aspects of this research. / O objetivo desta tese é compreender os principais processos de aprendizagem que ocorrem em grupos multifuncionais de Planejamento Avançado da Qualidade do Produto (APQP) que atuam em empresas fornecedoras de autopeças. Os objetivos específicos buscam identificar e descrever o processo de formação de grupos multifuncionais e sua relação com a
aprendizagem; identificar e descrever as metodologias utilizadas no funcionamento dos grupos multifuncionais e sua relação com a aprendizagem; identificar, descrever e discutir os fatores que prejudicam a aprendizagem dos grupos multifuncionais; identificar, descrever e discutir os fatores que facilitam a aprendizagem dos grupos multifuncionais e identificar, descrever e discutir momentos nos quais houve evidências de aprendizagem (grupal e coletiva) nos grupos multifuncionais pesquisados. Com a finalidade de se atingir os objetivos propostos e responder à pergunta de pesquisa, foram entrevistados integrantes de grupos multifuncionais de duas organizações distintas (Alfa e Beta), sendo três grupos por empresa, totalizando dezenove entrevistados. Além disso, a observação não participante também se constituiu em uma
estratégia de investigação. Como forma de estruturar, organizar e analisar os dados utilizou-se os templates propostos por Nigel King - uso a priori de códigos obtidos a partir do referencial teórico. Os resultados mostraram que a segurança psicológica instaurada no âmbito grupal e
coletivo, a aprendizagem ocorre quando o grupo inteiro consegue convergir seus conflitos e discussões internas em consensos. Além disso, o processo de aprendizagem é facilitado desde o momento em que o grupo é formado, principalmente devido à mobilidade dos seus membros, ao papel do gestor enquanto agente catalisador de informações, às metodologias de trabalho empregadas nas duas organizações, ao sistema artificial de Memória Transitiva, aos

Leadership Styles and Learning for Performance Within Commercial Banks in KenyaKaroki, Teckie Michelle 01 January 2016 (has links)
The literature indicates that leaders influence the establishment of organizational learning culture (OLC) by the application of transformational (TFO), transactional (TAC), and passive-avoidant (PAV) styles. Further, the literature links OLC to the financial performance of organizations by leadership involvement in establishing learning organizations. However, the manner in which the practice of OLC occurs and the relationship of OLC with TFO, TAC, and PAV is unclear, as is the link between OLC and financial performance (ROA); especially for growing economies outside North America. The purpose of this study was to address this gap in the literature through a quantitative study of leadership styles and their relationship to OLC based on complexity and contingency leadership theories, and organizational learning theory. The research questions focused on establishing the association between TFO, TAC, and PAV and OLC, and the link between OLC and ROA. Data from 40 commercial banks in Kenya were collected and multiple regression models developed. TFO and PAV Leadership styles were associated significantly with OLC; TAC did not have a significant relationship with OLC. OLC was linked significantly to ROA. The results of this study show that leaders of commercial banks build relationships with followers and support learning within their institutions; however, the results of this study show that these leaders engage in a limited form of organizational learning practice. This study has potential to contribute to positive social change by providing information about leadership and organizational learning strategies that advance transformational engagement with followers and organizational performance.

En cherchant à répondre à la question centrale de la différence entre les équipes d’experts et les équipes expertes (Fiore et Salas, 2006), la recherche en sciences du travail et en sciences du sport a montré que la simple association d’individus experts ne suffisait pas à produire des performances collectives (Sève, Bourbousson, Poizat et Saury, 2009). Toutefois les études engagées sur ce thème ne permettent pas de répondre directement à la problématique de la construction de l’expertise collective (Bourbousson et al., 2008 ; Bourbousson et Sève, 2010 ; Eccles et Tenenbaum, 2004). Notre travail de thèse a pour objectif de répondre à cette problématique par l’analyse de la construction de la coordination interpersonnelle entre des footballeurs d’une même équipe, au sein d’un centre de formation professionnel. En respectant une démarche naturaliste, nous avons mis en place une méthodologie qualitative (non invasive à partir d’entretiens d’autoconfrontation et semi-directifs, et de notes ethnographiques), longitudinale (22 mois de suivi) et multiniveau (une analyse du dispositif de formation, de l’activité des formateurs et une analyse de l’activité des joueurs en situation). Les résultats sont présentés en trois chapitres : 1) l’étude de l’évolution des consciences collectives de la situation (Endsely, 1995), 2) les différents processus d’apprentissage collectif mobilisés par les joueurs au cours des 6 sessions de formation ; 3) l’influence du dispositif de formation et de l’activité des formateurs sur l’activité des joueurs en situation. Nos résultats ont été discutés au regard de la littérature des sciences du sport et de la psychologie ergonomique. Finalement notre travail de thèse propose des avancées méthodologiques, conceptuelles et pratiques. / In order to answer the main question about the difference between a team of experts and an expert team (Fiore et Salas, 2006), research in work sciences and sport sciences showed that the association of expert individuals was not sufficient to produce collective performances (Sève, Bourbousson, Poizat et Saury, 2009). However, the present studies on this theme do not allow to answer directly the question of collective expertise construction (Bourbousson et al., 2008; Bourbousson et Sève, 2010; Eccles et Tenenbaum, 2004). Our thesis work aims to answer this question through the analysis of interpersonal coordination construction between football players in a team, within a professional training center. With a naturalist approach, we created a methodology which is qualitative (non-invasive with autoconfrontation semi-guided interviews, and ethnographic notes), longitudinal (22 months followup) and multi-level (analysis of the training plan, of trainers’ activity and analysis of players activity).Results are exposed in three chapters: 1) study of the evolution of the group awareness regarding thesituation (Endsely, 1995), 2) the different collective training processes mobilized by players during the 6 training sessions; 3) the influence of training plan and trainers’ activity on players activity in situation.Our results have been discussed in relation with literature in sport sciences and ergonomic psychology. Finally, our thesis work offers methodologic, conceptual and practical advances.

Language acquisition of ESL students in a discipline-based art education classroom using collaborative learning and whole languageMuldoon, Teresa Margaret 05 1900 (has links)
This study examined the influences of a variety of verbal and non-verbal strategies on the language acquisition of six fourth grade ESL students in a discipline-based art education classroom. The art teacher/researcher spoke only English, and the students spoke Spanish almost exclusively. The art instruction occurred during eighteen 30 minute sessions, over a period of five months. The program involved the whole language approach, collaborative/cooperative learning, and the study of art concepts through verbal and graphic symbol cue cards and images of art works. Data were amassed from transcripts of video recordings, student and teacher interviews, and reflective notes. This study showed highly successful results with student growth in language acquisition and comprehension of art concepts.

Il y a quelques décennies, l’émergence du discours de la promotion de la santé infléchissait un nouveau tournant à la santé publique, orientant sa pratique vers l’action communautaire, participative et intersectorielle. Parallèlement, au Québec, la réforme du système de santé de 2004 réorganisait le niveau de gouverne locale à travers la création des centres de santé et de services sociaux (CSSS). Ceux-ci doivent articuler les secteurs des soins et de la santé publique à travers un continuum de services qui va de la promotion de la santé aux soins palliatifs. Ces changements ont des implications majeures pour les acteurs de la santé et de la santé publique, qui doivent composer avec de nouveaux rôles professionnels et de nouvelles stratégies d’action. Le développement professionnel est considéré comme un levier potentiel pour soutenir ces changements.
En 2009, une équipe de la Direction de la santé publique de l’Agence de santé et des services sociaux de Montréal concevait un programme de développement professionnel appelé le Laboratoire de promotion de la santé. Ce programme mise sur une approche d’apprentissage de groupe pour permettre aux professionnels des CSSS de développer de nouvelles compétences, une pratique réflexive ainsi que de nouvelles pratiques de promotion de la santé.
Basée sur une méthodologie générale qualitative et une approche d’évaluation collaborative, cette thèse utilise plusieurs stratégies d’investigation afin d’évaluer le Laboratoire de promotion de la santé sous trois angles, qui renvoient à sa conceptualisation, à son implantation et à ses effets. Plus spécifiquement, elle vise à : (1) examiner la plausibilité de la théorie d’intervention du programme; (2) décrire et comprendre les processus d’apprentissage d’équipe ainsi que les facteurs qui les influencent; et (3) explorer, du point de vue des participants, les effets réflexifs du Laboratoire. Afin de répondre à ces objectifs, la thèse mobilise diverses perspectives théoriques liées à l’apprentissage individuel, d’équipe et organisationnel.
Les résultats des analyses démontrent que : (1) malgré quelques améliorations possibles, le modèle du programme est généralement bien conçu pour parvenir aux résultats visés; (2) l’implantation de ce modèle dans deux sites a donné lieu à des processus d’apprentissage d’équipe différents, bien que conditionnés par des facteurs communs liés aux participants, à l’équipe, au contexte organisationnel et à l’implantation du programme; (3) tel que visé, les participants des deux sites ont développé de la réflexivité vis-à-vis leur pratique et leur rôle professionnel – cette réflexivité adoptant une fonction formative ou critique en regard de l’expérience professionnelle.
Ces résultats soulignent le potentiel que représente l’évaluation de la théorie d’intervention pour améliorer la conceptualisation d’un programme de développement professionnel, ainsi que l’intérêt et la pertinence d’évaluer les processus d’apprentissage au niveau de l’équipe dans le cadre d’une approche collective de développement professionnel. De plus, ils appuient l’importance de l’apprentissage réflexif pour l’amélioration des pratiques et l’engagement social des professionnels. En ce sens, ils proposent différentes avenues qui ont le potentiel de consolider les capacités de la main-d’œuvre de santé publique et d’influer conséquemment sur son efficacité à améliorer la santé des collectivités dans le prochain siècle. / The emergence of the health promotion discourse a few decades ago steered public health practice into a new direction, orienting it toward community-based, participatory, and intersectoral action. Meanwhile, in Quebec, the 2004 healthcare system reform restructured the local level through the creation of health and social services centres. The mandate of these new organizations is to integrate the public health and the healthcare sector across a continuum of services ranging from health promotion all the way to palliative care.All these changes have significant implications for healthcare and public health practitioners, who must come to terms with new professional roles and new intervention strategies. Professional development is considered to be a potential lever for action to support these changes.
In 2009, a team from the Public Health Directorate of the Health and Social Services Agency of Montreal designed a professional development program called the Health Promotion Laboratory. This program builds on a team learning approach to enable participants to develop new competencies, a reflexive practice, and new health promotion practices within the organization.
Based on a qualitative methodology and a collaborative evaluation approach, this doctoral thesis used several investigation strategies to evaluate three components of the Health Promotion Laboratory, i.e., the program’s conceptualization, implementation, and outcomes. More specifically, this thesis aims to: (1) examine the plausibility of the program’s intervention theory; (2) describe and understand the team learning processes involved in the program, as well as the factors influencing them; and (3) explore, from the participants’ perspective, the reflexivity outcomes of the program. In pursuing these objectives, this thesis adopts several theoretical perspectives related to adult learning, team learning, and organizational learning.
The results show that: (1) while there is room for improvement, the program’s model is generally well designed to achieve the intended outcomes; (2) the model’s implementation in two sites resulted in different team learning processes, both of which depended on common factors related to the participants, the team, the organizational context, and the implementation of the program itself; and (3) as intended, participants from both sites developed reflexivity with regard to their practice and their professional roles, with this reflexivity taking on a formative and a critical function in terms of their professional experience.
These results highlight the potential offered by the evaluation of a program’s intervention theory for improving the conceptualization of a professional development program. They also demonstrate the importance and relevance of assessing the learning process at a group level in the context of a collective professional development approach. Finally, the findings support the importance of reflexive learning for improving professional practice and fostering the social engagement of practitioners. Thus, they suggest different avenues having the potential to strengthen the capacities of the public health workforce and thereby to increase its effectiveness in improving the health of communities in the coming century.

A series of educational reforms implemented in recent years had a considerable impact on secondary schools. From principals to teachers; from the school sector to the educational system, all parties had to effect fundamental changes. Facing this new educational era, many scholars suggested schools should have organizational learning so as to have continuous improvement and to pursue excellence. / Based on the findings from the quantitative and qualitative studies, some implications could be drawn. First, teachers should be encouraged to attend more workshops and seminars so as to familiarize themselves with the curriculum reforms. Secondly, schools should utilize the central database to store all the teaching materials for teachers' reference and collaborative lesson preparation should be organized so as to facilitate the co-operation among teachers in order to enhance teaching effectiveness. Of course, schools also should know that all the organizational learning obstacles would together form the unique schools atmosphere while these determine whether the schools can have effective organizational learning. Therefore, the schools should have deep understanding of the atmosphere and then make proper improvement accordingly. Thirdly, the Education Bureau should put in more resources to help the language and liberal studies teachers. Training courses for vice-principals should be strengthened so as to enhance their capabilities to assist principals in leading the teaching staff and carrying out the educational reforms in the school. / However, according to various studies, there was low level of organizational learning process and organizational learning outcome in the majority of primary and secondary schools. From this, we learn that there must be some obstacles for schools to practice organizational learning. Furthermore, the capability of teachers, the main staff of schools, to learn effectively is often the key factor affecting the success or failure of schools. Unfortunately, according to some studies and some reports concerning teachers' stress, it is found that in facing series of educational reforms, teachers were facing tremendous work pressure. Many teachers are unable to meet the new requirements of the educational environment. Some chose to retire early or even to leave the educational sector. Therefore, a study on the obstacles to organizational learning in schools becomes a must. / The findings in the qualitative study showed that organizational learning obstacles varied among teachers of different subjects. Language and Liberal Studies teachers were having the most problems. Besides, as some of the educational reforms were still in their initial stage, not many teachers were involved and hence the problems of having organizational learning were still not serious and explicit. Other than that, teachers regarded the policies launched by the Education Bureau were too fast and too extensive in scale, the schools did not have the capabilities to make school-based modifications. / The findings in the quantitative study showed that the problem of having organizational learning obstacles in Hong Kong secondary schools was not serious. Among all the seven factors concerning organizational learning obstacles, the main one was in the factor of communicating problems. Besides, a major finding of the study indicated that the obstacles at the school level were more serious than those at the personal level. From this, one could learn that teachers regarded support from the school organizational structure, school culture and the principals still have room for improvement while they did not think: that they had great problems with their cognitive abilities and confidence. Only that they did have difficulty in handling the ever-mounting work-load. Other than that, it was found that all the factors concerning the organizational learning obstacles were significantly correlated. / This study was conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively. First, by reviewing the literature, one could have a deeper understanding of the situation secondary schools were facing. Based on the above information, a study tool for the organizational learning obstacles was developed. Through this tool, the existing situation of Hong Kong secondary school in organizational learning was examined. Then, according to the questionnaire data, schools were divided into three groups: high, middle and low in the degree of learning obstacles. One school from each group was chosen to have the qualitative study.
