An evaluation of the perceptions of high school teenagers regarding sexual health promotion programmes in Whittlesea, Eastern Cape, South Africa : a qualitative study

Aiyede, Amos Onakho 22 July 2015 (has links)
Introduction Health problems emanating from sexual behaviour include HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections among adolescents are considered high in South Africa. Also, the burden of unplanned pregnancies has wider implications in society. These problems occur in spite of a number of different sexual health promotion programmes. The aim of the study was to view the perception of high school teenagers to sexual health promotions programmes as well as their response to these programmes. The objectives of the study were: 1. To explore the perceptions of local teenagers regarding the content and materials used in local health promotion programmes 2. To explore the perceptions of local teenagers regarding the communication strategies and style used in local health promotion programmes 3. To explore the perceptions of local teenagers regarding the impact of local health promotion programmes on their behaviour Method This was a qualitative study. The study population was high school teenagers from the Whittlesea townships in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Fourteen purposefully selected teenagers from the seven high schools were individually interviewed. Analysis was done using the framework method. Results The study showed that the content of sexual health promotion programmes to which high school teenagers in Whittlesea were exposed to composed of sexual health education and the building of life skills. Perception of the messages in these contents was influenced by lack of communication on sexual matters within individual families and religious beliefs of participants. The programmes were considered to be practical and helpful. Methods that involved teenagers’ participation or interaction were generally preferred and the communication style was perceived as facilitating behavioural/attitudinal change. Conclusion In order for adolescent sexual health promotion programmes to be effective, they should employ methods that involve participation and human interaction. The involvement of parents, role models, religious groups and community services in sexual health promotion could be helpful in promoting sexual health education and lifestyle change amongst teenagers.

The aim of the present study was to test the portuguese version of the questions proposed by the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) for the screening of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), as well as to verify the prevalence and to identify potential risk factors for this condition in adolescents, public school students from Araraquara city, São Paulo, Brazil. The diagnosis of TMD was conducted with the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD), taken as reference standard. The reliability of the questions was estimated through internal consistence, inter-item correlation and reproducibility analyses. For the validity, tests of sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, acuracy and ROC curves were conducted. The potential risk factors were assessed with questionnaires. For the epidemiologic characterization, we used descriptive statistics, chi-squares tests and odds ratio, adopting 5% of significance. The sample was composed by 1307 adolescents (56.8% girls, mean age 12.72 years old). Overall, 397 (30.4%) adolescents presented TMD according to the RDC/TMD, 330 (25.2%) consisted of painful TMD diagnoses. AAOP questions presented satisfactory reliability and validity for the screening of TMD, specially painful TMD. The sample presented a considerable TMD prevalence, especially of painful and muscle TMD, and the majority of studied potential risk factors associated with all painful TMD diagnoses. There was also a high prevalence of headache complaints, which comprised a potential risk fator for painful and cronic TMD of combined origin. We concluded that TMD was common among adolescents and many factors associated with its presence in the studied sample.

An exploratory study of parents’ experiences of their teenagers’ text messaging

Mukasano, Epiphanie January 2014 (has links)
Magister Artium (Child and Family Studies) - MA(CFS) / Today the mobile phone plays a vital role in social life across the globe. For many teenagers and young adults in particular, this device forms an integral part of their daily communication, with text messaging being one of their preferred modes of social interaction. Researchers across the globe have studied various facets of this phenomenon but he main focus has been on this mode of communication in peer relationships. From a family systems perspective, the current qualitative study intended to explore how parents experience their teenagers’ text messaging in terms of communication and relationships with their teenagers, and how parents regulate this pervasive practice. To this end, data were collected by means of one-on-one interviews among eleven parents (eight mothers and three fathers) in Cape Town, South Africa, using a semi-structured interview schedule. With the participants’ permission, the sessions were tape-recorded; data were transcribed, content analysed, and patterns and themes identified according to Creswell’s (2009) steps. Participants expressed a range of experiences, from positive to negative, not only of text messaging, but of their teenagers’ use of mobile phones in general. Among the positives, it was the sense of security the devices gave parents, and the possibility of communicating easily, quickly and at affordable cost and at the same time monitoring their children at a distance. The negatives were mainly related to the misuse/and overuse of the mobile phones. The study suggests that parents were aware of some of the dangers associated with mobile phones, such as bullying, sexting, texting while driving, overuse at the expense of family, studying and sleeping times, and home chores. It also reveals that girls were more at risk, especially when it came to mobile bullying and sexting. Some parents came up with suggestions on dealing with mobile phones and text messaging-related problems. Furthermore, the study is indicative of a predominantly authoritative parenting style whereby parents successfully limited these dangers by regulating the use of their teenagers’ mobile phones. However, for some, finding the balance, especially between parental control and teenagers’ privacy, proved to be a challenge. Moreover, while expressing the need for mobile internet, especially for teenagers’ school work, the majority of participants showed concern about having it under control. The study concludes that text messaging can be used to enhance communication and relationships between parents and their teenagers. It recommends educating the latter about the dangers of mobile phones and the former to monitor their use, while at the same time negotiating teenagers’ freedom.

Problematika závislosti na alkoholu u mladistvých / The Issue of Alcohol Dependence in Adolescents

FILIPOVÁ, Darina January 2012 (has links)
Researches focused on the issues of alcohol addiction performed in the Czech Republic show that the number of alcohol addicts is higher every year and alcoholism has become a serious public health problem. There are more and more addicts every year, which is except others backed by the words that MUDr. Petr Popov, senior consultant of the Addiction Treatment Department of the General Faculty Hospital in Prague, said to the Právo daily on 10 March 2010: ?We used to have about 300 thousand alcohol addicts. Now there are between 600 and 700 thousand. There are twice as many men as women, but women have been gaining on men?. As an article in the Mladá Fronta Dnes of 21 February 2012 says, the number of young alcohol consumers is increasing, while about a fifth of 16 year olds admit drinking five or more glasses at least three times a month. This results from 2011 research quoted in the above article. My thesis dealing with the issues of alcohol addiction in teenagers wants to map the situation among teenagers of České Budějovice region and their knowledge of the impacts of excessive alcohol consumption on their personal and family lives, social lives and relations. The theoretical part deals with the problems of the process and occurrence of alcohol addiction in general and with the social and health consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, with the factors influencing teenagers to consumption of alcohol and other drugs and prevention in the field of addiction focused on teenagers. In the research part I particularly focus on socioeconomic background of young respondents, personal experience with alcohol and marginally on the other addictive substances. I also focus on mapping the knowledge of the consequences of alcohol consumption, influence of environment and of free time activities. I applied quantitative research, in the form of a questionnaire. My research shows that most of teenagers are aware of the consequences of alcohol consumption or abuse, but they do not limit alcohol consumption in their lives and they actually increase its consumption as they are growing older. More systematic application of training seminars focused on more consistent care about personal and social development and better orientation of free time activities can definitely contribute to prevention of alcohol abuse, of addiction development among teenagers, to further improvement of their knowledge and skills used for alcohol consumption reduction and consequent addiction. Better legislation measures in the field of punishing young users of alcohol and drugs would undoubtedly contribute as well.
