Text in Afrikaans / In hierdie studie is adolessente se houdings teenoor bejaardes ondersoek. Die sosiale aard van houdings is beklemtoon en in verband gebring met sosiale afstand. Aspekte van subkulture, Cowgill se fotmulering van die moderniseringsteorie, die ouderdomstratifikasie­ model en Dowd se ruilingsteorie is as teoretiese orientering gebruik. Die doel van die studie is om vas te stel of daar 'n verband is tussen adolessente se houdings teenoor spesifieke bejaardes en adolessente se houdings teenoor bejaardes in die algemeen. Die verband tussen houdings teenoor bejaardes en die volgende is ook ondersoek, adolessente se: geslag, huistaal, hoeveelheid kontak met bejaardes en evaluering van gesprekke met bejaardes. Die ondersoek is deur middel van 'n vraelys onder standerd sewe leerlinge in enkele skole in die Vanderbijlpark-Vereeniging gebied geloods. 'n Verband is tussen adolessente se houdings teenoor spesifieke bejaardes en adolessente se houdings teenoor bejaardes in die algemeen gevind. / In this study adolescents' attitudes towards the elderly were investigated. The social nature of attitudes were highlighted and then linked to social distance. Aspects of subcultures, Cowgill's formulation of the modernisation theory, the age stratification model and Dowd's exchange theory were used as a theoretical base. The aim of the study is to establish whether there is a relationship between adolescents' attitudes towards specific elderly persons and adolescents' attitudes towards the elderly in general. The relationship between attitudes towards the elderly and the following were also examined, adolescents': gender, home language, amount of contact with elderly persons and evaluation of conversations with elderly persons. The study was conducted by way of a questionnaire administered to standard seven pupils in several schools in the Vanderbijlpark-Vereeniging area. Facilitating Healthy Parenting Attitudes Among Adolescents Using Filial Therapy in a High School Curriculum

This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of a filial therapy training model with high school students enrolled in a Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL) program. Specifically, this study was designed to determine the effectiveness of filial therapy in: (1) increasing observed empathic behavior with children, (2) increasing acceptance toward children, (3) increasing the ability to allow children self-direction, and (4) increasing the level of involvement with children. Additionally, this study was designed to determine the effectiveness of filial therapy in facilitating healthy parenting attitudes of nonparenting adolescents. A research question was presented to determine if a relationship exists between empathy, acceptance, involvement and allowing children self-direction and other factors considered to be healthy parenting attitudes. An Analysis of Covariance on post-test scores revealed significant findings in the high school students ability to demonstrate empathy towards children, allowing the child self direction, communication of acceptance, and involvement as measured by the Measurement of Empathy in Adult-Child Interactions (MEACI). An Analysis of Covariance on post-test scores revealed no significant changes in parenting attitudes as measured by Adult- Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2). A Bivariate Correlation revealed a statistically significant correlation between the Empathy, Acceptance, Allowing the Child Self-Direction and Involvement scales on the Measurement of Empathy in Adult-Child Interactions (MEACI) and the Oppressing Children's Power and Independence scale on the Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2). This study supports the use of filial therapy as an effective training model for increasing high school students' empathic behavior with children. Filial therapy training offers significant possibilities for future use in high school curricula to facilitate the development of healthy parenting attitudes and interactions between future parents and children.

Adolescent sexuality and media influences in China: modulating effects of school, family and friends. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

A research questionnaire survey was conducted in Shanghai, China. Based on cluster sampling strategy, 1428 students from nine secondary schools participated in the study. The respondents completed a 123-items questionnaire that measured their daily media practice, perceptions about the three dimensions of sexuality under study, functioning of school, family and friends, and socio-demographic profile. Furthermore, the quantitative survey is supplemented with a qualitative semi-structured interview to adolescents who have participated in the survey study. / In addition, the study indicates that, as factors become more liberal, the more powerfully they affect the formation of sexual identity among adolescents. For school and family, the two conservative agents, a strong impact on the formation of sexuality among teenagers can be made by teachers in school or parents at home by: (a) adoption of a more open attitude towards sexuality issues; (b) active engagement in instructions or counseling about sexuality issues; (c) provision of extensive information about sexuality that adolescents are seeking; (d) creation of a horizontal environment to facilitate the process; and, specifically for school-based sexuality education, (e) adoption of peer-led sexuality education; and (f) limitation of the classes to a small size. / The primary concern of this study is the role of media in affecting the formation of sexuality among adolescents. The aspects of sexuality under study include attitudes towards love and relationships, stereotypes of gender role and standards of attractiveness. The central contention is that the role of media in the formation of sexuality during adolescence can only be fully understood within the context of the adolescent's life experience in school, at home and with friends. / These findings validate the assumption that the role of media in the formation of sexuality among adolescents must be investigated in their life experience in school, at home and with friends. The perceptions of sexuality are the result of a confluence of all of these influential sources. The mutual dependencies among these factors made the adolescent life experience essential for understanding the role of media in teenager sexuality development. This provides support for further examination into media and adolescent sexuality development in a more macro-sociological context. / While as proposed, the media appear to be strong predictors of adolescent perceptions of sexuality; this is interrelated with other influential factors like school, family and friends in important ways. For the path to influence, media can affect these perceptions directly and intermediately through the effects on family and friends as well. For the direction of influence, media impact would be strengthened by that of friends but weakened by those of school and family. These findings were illustrated in a structural equation model, which also demonstrated significant associations between the perceptions about sexuality and influential factors other than media, including school, family and friends. By comparing the respective contribution of all of these factors, it was found that friends have the greatest role in shaping adolescent perceptions of sexuality, while media have the second strongest. The relationship between perceived parents’ parenting style and socioeconomic status among gifted students living in a residential academy in a midwestern state

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between gifted students’ perceived parents’ parenting styles living in a residential academy and socioeconomic status. It was also the purpose to investigate if a relationship exists between students’ perceived parents’ parenting styles and their gender. Parenting style was measured by a validated 60-question Parenting Style Questionnaire. The findings were unlike previous research and suggest that residential gifted students may perceive their parents’ parenting styles more negatively than average ability students. Participants did not perceive their parents’ parenting styles differently among socioeconomic status (SES) which is unlike previous research which uses socioeconomic status as a predictor of parenting style among non-gifted students (Pinderhughes, Bates, Dodge, Pettit, & Zelli, 2000) . Statistically significant differences were also found between gifted students’ perceptions of their mothers and fathers. It is the intention of this study to use the results as a starting point for others to investigate residential gifted students and dedicate more studies to gifted research. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

African American and European American adolescents' attitudes toward affirmative action and school desegregation

The purpose of these studies was to examine the predictors of African American and European American adolescents’ attitudes toward affirmative action (Study 1) and school desegregation (Study 2) policies. It was hypothesized that support for both policies would be higher among adolescents who (1) attended more racially diverse classes, (2) held less prejudiced racial attitudes, (3) were more aware of historical and continuing racial inequality and discrimination, (4) described themselves as politically liberal, and (5) had engaged in more racial identity exploration. Participants in both studies included African American and European American adolescents ages 14 to 17 attending a high school in the Midwestern U.S. On the first day of data collection in both studies, adolescents completed assessments of the hypothesized predictor variables in the context of their high school social studies classrooms. On the second day of data collection, adolescents learned about either an affirmative action (Study 1) or a school desegregation (Study 2) policy that had been proposed for their school. Immediately following the policy presentations, adolescents reported their opinions of the policy in open-ended and forced-choice formats. Across studies, results indicated that African American and European American adolescents often held significantly different views of race, racism, and race-related policies. In general, African American adolescents were more aware of racial discrimination, endorsed more positive views about African Americans, and were more supportive of affirmative action and school desegregation policies than European American adolescents. Predictors of individuals’ views of race-related policies also varied by participant race. Among African American adolescents, higher awareness of interracial disparities and discrimination predicted stronger support of affirmative action and school desegregation. Among European American adolescents, in contrast, higher awareness of interracial disparities and discrimination predicted weaker support of affirmative action and school desegregation. More work is needed to examine the origins of differences between African American and European American adolescents’ understanding of, and beliefs about, race in society. / text

The aim of this study was to ascertain the role of parental influence and, in particular, the parenting style on the development of academic responsibility in adolescence. The measurement instrument used to gauge the level of responsibility an adolescent attains was the evaluation of the individual's academic results in relation to a specific parenting style. Academic achievements were seen as a reflection of the individual's positive or negative behaviour towards his/her academic responsibilities and requirements. The research was done by means of a literature study and empirical research. The initial sample of participants consisted of adolescents between the age of fifteen and seventeen years. These individuals completed a questionnaire, which required their biographic details, their perceptions of their parents' parenting styles and their academic results. Two v learners were selected to participate in an in-depth study. One of the learners achieved academically, the other was a poor academic achiever.
