Humidity Sensing Behavior of Endohedral Li-Doped and Undoped SWCNT/SDBS Composite Films

Müller, Christian, Al-Hamry, Ammar, Kanoun, Olfa, Rahaman, Mahfujur, Zahn, Dietrich R. T., Matsubara, Elaine Yoshiko, Rosolen, José Mauricio 14 February 2019 (has links)
We have investigated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) networks wrapped with the cationic surfactant sodium dodecyl-benzenesulfonate (SBDS) as promising candidates for water detection. This is the first time that the humidity behavior of endohedral Li-doped (Li@) and undoped SWCNTs/SDBS has been shown. We identified a strong and almost monotonic decrease in resistance as humidity increased from 11 to 97%. Sensitivities varied between −3 and 65% in the entire humidity range. Electrical characterization, Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis revealed that a combination of the electron donor behavior of the water molecules with Poole-Frenkel conduction accounted for the resistive humidity response in the Li@SWCNT/SDBS and undoped SWCNT/SDBS networks. We found that Li@SWCNTs boosted the semiconducting character in mixtures of metallic/semiconducting SWCNT beams. Moreover, electrical characterization of the sensor suggested that endohedral Li doping produced SWCNT beams with high concentration of semiconducting tubes. We also investigated how frequency influenced film humidity sensing behavior and how this behavior of SWCNT/SDBS films depended on temperature from 20 to 80 ∘ C. The present results will certainly aid design and optimization of SWCNT films with different dopants for humidity or gas sensing in general.

TEMPENSURE, A BLOCKCHAIN SYSTEM FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROL IN COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS

Matthew L Schnell (13206366) 05 August 2022 (has links)

Cold chain logistics comprise a large portion of transported pharmaceutical medications and raw materials which must be preserved at specified temperatures to maintain consumer safety and efficacy. An immutable record of temperatures of transported pharmaceutical goods allows for mitigation of temperature-related issues of such drugs and their raw components. The recording of this information on a blockchain creates such an immutable record of this information which can be readily accessed by any relevant party. This can allow for any components which have not been kept at the appropriate temperatures to be removed from production. These data can also be used as inputs for smart contracts or for data analytic purposes.

A theoretical framework for such a system, referred to as “TempEnsure” is described, which provides digital capture of the internal temperature of temperature-controlled shipping containers. The data are recorded in a blockchain system. Real world testing of this system was not possible due to monetary constraints, but the functional elements of the system, as well as potential improvements for the system, are discussed.

Towards an Integrated Water Quality Monitoring System Using Low Cost Electrochemical Sensors

Alam, Arif Ul January 2019 (has links)
The monitoring of pharmaceuticals, heavy metal, pH and free chlorine concentration in drinking water is important for public health and the environment. However, conventional laboratory-based analytical methods are labor-intensive, expensive, and time consuming. This thesis focuses on developing an integrated, highly sensitive, easy-to-use, and low-cost pharmaceuticals, heavy metal, pH and free chlorine sensing system for drinking water quality monitoring. A low-temperature, solution-processed modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) on glassy carbon electrode is developed for detecting low levels of acetaminophen. The adsorption properties of βCD are combined with the high surface area of carbon nanotubes towards enhanced electrochemical sensing of acetaminophen with a limit of detection of 11 nM and linear range from 0.05-300 μM. Also, a systematic investigation is carried out using four types of modified MWCNT-βCD. A novel, one-step approach called Steglich esterification modified MWCNT-βCD results in large effective surface area, and fast electron transfer towards sensitive detection of acetaminophen and 17β-estradiol (E2, primary female sex hormone) in the range of 0.005–20 and 0.01–15 μM, with low detection limits of 3.3 and 2.5 nM, respectively. The similar MWCNT-βCD modified electrodes can also detect heavy metal ion (lead, Pb2+) with a limit of detection of <10 ppb. Low frequency noise behavior of these sensors are studied. A spin-coated Pd/PdO based pH sensor, and amine-modified carbon electrode-based free chlorine sensor are fabricated on a common substrate together with the pharmaceuticals and heavy metal sensors. A Wheatstone-bridge temperature sensor is fabricated based on silicon and PEDOT:PSS on another substrate. All the sensors are connected to an Arduino microcontroller based data acquisition system with a smartphone application interface. The integrated sensing system is easy-to-use, low-cost, and can provide accurate monitoring data with real drinking water samples. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Low-cost, easy-to-use, and sensitive monitoring system for pharmaceuticals, heavy metal, pH and free chlorine in drinking water is crucial for public health safety. In this thesis, we develop solution-based synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified by β-cyclodextrin for electrochemical sensing of pharmaceuticals and heavy metal. The modification approaches are compared and characterized to analyze their electrochemical behavior and sensing performances. The developed sensors are highly sensitive toward the detection of acetaminophen (a widely used pain-killer) and estrogen hormone in drinking water. We also develop a modified spin-coating technique to deposit palladium/palladium oxide films for potentiometric pH sensor, a calibration-free free chlorine sensor based on modified carbon electrode, and a resistive temperature sensor. The developed pH, free chlorine and temperature sensors are highly sensitive, and stable with fast response time. All the sensors are integrated and interfaced with a custom-made and smartphone-controlled electronic readout system for accurate and on-site drinking water quality monitoring at low cost.

Abstract: In this work the effect of multimodal interference (MMI) in waveguides was studied by numerical simulation. Special attention was given to optical fibers and its the optical response when external parameters such as temperature, curvature or refractive índex were varied. MMI devices are usually formed by connecting three waveguides being the input and output ones single mode waveguides while the middle one is a waveguide that allows the propagation of many optical modes, typically more than three. In this situation re-images that replicate both the phase and the amplitude of the input optical field are formed periodically within the multimode section. The analysis of the transmission spectrum of the first re-image in MMI devices were realized in order to get information about the fiber environment, in particular the surrounding refractive índex, radius of curvature and temperature. The sensors sensitivity was evaluated. / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física

Návrh a identifikace rozšířeného modelu MEMS gyroskopu / An Extended Model of a MEMS Gyroscope: Design and Identification

Vágner, Martin January 2016 (has links)
The thesis is aimed on measurement and modeling of MEMS gyroscopes based on input-output characteristics. The first part briefs the state of the art. The second part is dedicated to measurement methodology. Critical points and sources of uncertainty are discussed and evaluated using measurements or simulations. The last part shows key characteristics of MEMS gyroscopes based on the survey of a group of different sensor types. The results have revealed significant influence of supply voltage that causes bias drift of the gyroscope and bias drift of the internal temperature sensor. The error can be comparable to temperature drift; however, this effect is not addressed in the literature. The second observed effect is temperature dependency of angle random walk. In the last part, a general model of a MEMS gyroscope is rewritten to reflect observed effects. Moreover, the structure is selected to be easily extendable and the coefficients are expressed to allow a comparison of nominal parameters of different sensors.
