Designing Lost Circulation Pills For Polymer Based Drill-in Fluids

Kahvecioglu, Alper 01 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Specially designed non-damaging lost circulation pills (LCP) are being effectively applied for drilling depleted zones worldwide. Optimizing the LCP compositions stop the lost circulation effectively and protect the production zone from liquid and solids invasion significantly. Shape, particle size distribution and concentration of the lost circulation materials (LCM) are key parameters determining the effectiveness of LCP. In this study, the Permeability Plugging Apparatus (PPA) is utilized to evaluate effectiveness of various LCM&rsquo / s in curing the lost circulation. Sized calcium carbonates are used as LCM in different concentrations and in different particle size distribution. Lost circulation zones are simulated using the ceramic disks and slotted disks. Ceramic disks with nominal pore sizes 20, 35, 60, 90, and 150 microns are characterized in terms of pore size distribution using the computerized image analysis technique. Filter cake quality, spurt loss and filtrate volume are basic parameters to be evaluated in this study. Tests are performed at 75 F and 300 psi of differential.

”Live to be mogged. The truecel tale” : En kritisk diskursanalys av forumen incels.co och looksmax.me / ”Live to be mogged. The truecel tale” : A critical discourse analysis of incels.co and looksmax.me.

Karlsson, Melinda, Wisberg, Terese January 2020 (has links)
During the 21th century, a new worldview started to take form when forums aimed towards people that live in involuntary celibate; incels, started to spread online. The forums centers around discussions where misogyny values are shared and where the men participating in them gain community and context in their celibate life. This study is a critical discourse analysis of two of those forums where we, using a subculture-theory approach, aimed to create an understanding of this growing phenomenon. The analysis showed that the forums and the individuals in them displayed several features in common with these criminological theories. Based on the result from the study the incel culture could be regarded as a subculture, which should provide a deeper understanding of these kind of environments and the culture itself.

Factors related to prescription drug abuse among young adults in Florida

Gonzalez, Mabel Gonzalez 01 January 2016 (has links)
A lack of available data exists regarding environmental factors related to prescription drug abuse (PDA), which could explain the ineffectiveness of efforts to reduce PDA in Florida. Prescription drug abuse among adults older than age 18 varies with the level of education achieved, and these metrics potentially reflect socioeconomic differences. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the connections between contextual aspects of prescription opioid abuse among Florida's middle and high school students to understand youth PDA in relation to their environments. This study consisted of a secondary analysis of existing PDA data (dependent variable) in relation to a number of independent variables, including the incidence of female-headed households, the nature of residential environment, adherence to religious precepts, and students' ability to achieve educational goals. Incidence of female-headed households, the nature of residential environment, and adherence to religious precepts were not found to predict youth PDA. The only finding of significance was that PDA predicted lowered students' ability to achieve educational goals (p = .015). Data collected from this study might be used by school counselors and administrators when developing drug abuse prevention, intervention, and educational programs, thereby leading to positive social change in helping to reduce PDA among youth.

Poison Pills : A management-shareholder benefits comparison

Zhou, Xin, Alija, Teuta, Ochoche, Owoicho January 2010 (has links)
Abstract Problem: The problem of this thesis involves the controversy that the implementation of poison pills generates. The conflict amongst various stakeholders that are affected directly or indirectly by the implementation of the poison pill also contributes significantly to the problem of this thesis. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and compare the benefits of the poison pill adoption on shareholder and management interests. We also seek to evaluate arguments for and against pill adoption, and determine if these arguments are valid in view of facts established from our study. Conclusions: Our study in this thesis has brought us to five conclusions about the poison pill policy in fulfillment of the purpose. We state in our conclusion that arguments for and against the poison pill can both be validated depending on the case, we also state that a general conclusion cannot be drawn as to the negative or positive effect of the poison pill on stakeholders. We proceed to argue that the pill is a very effective fighting toll in the current business world and state that more should be done to regulate pill implementation. We finish up our conclusion by identifying what appears to be an inverse relationship between management and shareholders benefits from the implementation of the pill. Originality: The uniqueness of our study resides in the theoretical framework that is developed from two prevailing hypotheses in the academic research of the poison pill. The previous studies either take on the management entrenchment hypothesis (MEH) or the shareholder interest hypothesis (SIH). However, we have combined the elements of both hypotheses and jointly revealed the advantages and disadvantages of the pill adoption for both management and shareholders via our original management shareholder benefits comparison matrix.

The Effect of Oral Contraceptives on Women's Labor Force Participation Rates

Yamanaka, Jackie E 01 April 2013 (has links)
The first oral contraceptive was introduced in the United States during the 1960s, and, subsequently, there was an increase in women’s labor force participation rates. Although the economic role of oral contraceptives is still highly debated by scholars, previous studies have found that the pill had a statistically significant impact on women’s labor force participation rates. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Women, I will analyze how hours worked, hourly wages, weekly earnings and occupations for women were affected by oral contraceptives. By controlling for various governing statutes that affected the availability of the use and distribution of oral contraceptives in different states, I am able to provide evidence highlighting the extent of the pill’s significance. I find that early legal access (ELA) to oral contraceptives that resulted from residential states legalizing abortion before others positively and significantly affects women’s hours worked, hourly wages, weekly earnings and whether or not women entered into professional occupations.

Adaptive Sensor : Exploring the use of dynamic role allocation based on interesting to detect blood and tumors in a smart pill

Yang, Can January 2018 (has links)
For intelligent systems, the ability to adapt a sensor's sensing capabilities offers promise for reducing numbers, weight, and volume of sensors required. This basic idea is in line with a recent assertion by the well-known roboticist Rodney Brooks, that versatile robots could be used to perform various tasks instead of requiring a large number of specialized robots. In the current work, we consider the concept of a "smart" sensor which could dynamically adapt itself to replace multiple static sensors--within the application area of ingestible smart pills, where small sensors might be required to detect problems such as bleeding or tumours.\\ Simulations were used to evaluate some basic strategies for how to adapt the sensor and their effectiveness was compared; as well, a hardware prototype using LEDs to indicate system switching was prepared.

Framtidens medicinsystem : Utveckling av en portabel och användarvänlig doseringsask / The medical system of the future : Concept development of a portable and user-friendly pillbox

Hernandez, rodrigo January 2020 (has links)
This project has been carried out as an examination in the education bachelor’s degree in innovation technology and design, the course is conducted in the spring 2019 at Karlstad University. The project has been carried out in accordance with product development process, in an assignment provided by VICTRIX AB, Stockholm. The mission was to create a portable pillbox. Two problem definition were formulated: How should an electronic pillbox be designed to be user-friendly, portable and easy to recharge with new medication? How should a hatch be designed so that a person with a high cognitive disability is able to open and close it? The purpose of the thesis is to carry out a product development process and independently develop a concept with the help of implementing knowledge acquired by the education bachelor’s degree in innovation technology and design. The purpose of the assignment is to reach a larger target group with a new and improved design. The product should offer precision when it comes to medication. The goal was to provide a concept basis in the form of CAD model with associated drawings of an electronic pillbox which is cognitive smart.  Methods covered in the project include project planning, pilot study, requirement specification, concept generation, concept evaluation, concept selection and construction. This resulted in a final concept that illustrates an electronic pillbox that reminds the patient to take their medication at the right time. The product shows from which compartment the medication is to be taken through several alarm signals. The end concept consists of a clock unit with a membrane that includes display and buttons. Two pillboxes that can be connected to the long sides of the clock unit. Each pillbox offer up to four dosing time. This concept is delivered as a basis for continued development and optimization in order to be a fully functional product in the future.

"You're completely brainwashed" : A qualitative study on toxic masculinity as expressed by a 'men's rights' influencers fanbase

Leandersson, Ellie January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis I will use a ‘men’s rights’ influencers fanbase as an example of a new generation of people who values toxic and traditional masculinity. I will do so by doing a critical discourse analysis on 1200 comments from the platform Reddit, using Fairclough's three-dimensional model as inspiration. Furthermore, to deepen the analysis I have chosen to analyze the comments in relation to parasocial relationships, hegemonic masculinity as well as the concepts of traditional and toxic masculinity. I found through my analysis that the fanbase views the influencer as a form of ‘beacon of truth’, and made a plethora of external references in regards to the movie 'The Matrix’. Moreover, the fans articulate masculinity in a way where ‘strength’ is prevalent, and is in line with traditional and toxic masculinity - whilst holding the influencer as a form of ideal of this form. In the discussion I draw parallels to how referencing the Matrix as a concept could speak of a mistrust towards the government, and how the countermovement to ‘modern’ masculinity could result in dangerous practices. To conclude, I highlight how there is still more research to be done on the field of alternative influencers and what consequences this ‘countermovement’ may have.
