Aspectos biológicos e exigências térmicas em quatro espécies de Chrysopidae (Neuroptera) / Biological aspects and thermal requirements in four species of Chrysopidae (Neuroptera)

Gächter Skanata, Camila Beatriz 04 April 2018 (has links)
The Chrysopidae family is the most diverse in the order Neuroptera and lacewings are considered promising biological control agents, because they feed on a wide variety of small insect pests. The objective of this work was to compare the biological and reproductive aspects, to determine the thermal requirements and to establish the climatic zoning of four species of lacewings, Chysoperla externa (Hagen), Ceraeochrysa cubana (Hagen), Ceraeochrysa cincta (Schneider) and Ceraeochrysa paraguaria (Navás) for the state of São Paulo. The results showed that the four species of lacewings were able to complete their egg-adult cycle in the thermal range of 18 to 32 °C and the best viability obtained between 22 and 28 °C. It was observed that the Ch. externa species had a faster development than the other species at each stage of development and the egg-adult cycle. In the fertility life table, the population growth was favored in the thermal range of 22 and 28 °C for Ce. cincta, from 22 to 25 °C for Ce. paraguaria, from 25 to 28 °C for Ch. externa and for Ce. cubana temperature at 28 °C. The thermal requirements of the species indicated that the base temperature (Tt) were 10.5, 12.95, 11.99, and 11.77 °C and the thermal constant were 443.81, 362.7, 399.68, and 314.95 DD for Ce. cincta, Ce. cubana, Ce. paraguaria and Ch. externa, respectively. Through the thermal requirements and the use of computational tools such as the Geographic Information System (GIS), it was possible to represent spatially the development of the four species of lacewings. It was observed that the estimated number of monthly generations was influenced by temperature, and in the warmer months the life cycle was faster than in the colder months. Due to the shorter life span of Ch. externa, this species managed to complete 14 generations/year, with the remaining 10 to 11 generations/year in the warmer regions of the state of São Paulo. In colder regions, the number of estimated annual generations for each species was lower. In addition, it was observed that among the species studied, Ch. externa can be indicated for regions with mild to warm temperatures, Ce. cincta for mild climates to cold, Ce. paraguaria for regions with mild temperatures and Ce. cubana regions to warm temperatures. The data obtained in this study could be used for mass rearing the species, to help predict the occurrence of predators in the field and to choose which of the species are best adapted to certain climates in the environment aiming the use of these predators in Integrated Pest Management programs.

DEVELOPMENT OF A DEGREE DAY MODEL AND ECONOMIC THRESHOLDS FOR CEROTOMA TRIFURCATA (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE) IN ONTARIO

McCreary, Cara M. 06 September 2013 (has links)
Bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an economic pest of soybean in Ontario. Field cage studies were conducted in 2010-2011 to determine voltinism in southern Ontario and the effect of C. trifurcata feeding during soybean reproductive stages on soybean yield and quality. Thermal requirements for C. trifurcata development were determined in a laboratory study. Results of field and laboratory studies support the occurrence of one generation of C. trifurcata in southern Ontario. Pod-feeding increased with both number of beetles and soybean reproductive stage. An increase in defoliation and a reduction in seed quality were observed with increasing number of beetles. Monitoring programs for late-season pod-feeding should begin when degree days approach 500 (base 9.31°C). Economic thresholds for C. trifurcata during soybean reproductive stages range from 0.27 to 2.00 beetles per plant or 8 to 60 beetles per m of row. / Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food – University of Guelph Sustainable Production (Plants) Program and Grain Farmers of Ontario through the Farm Innovation Program.

The purpose of this work was to study the biological cycle of D. gallinae in the laboratory at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35ºC, to determine the fecundity, the fertility and the influence of fasting on fertility, as well as the thermal requirements for D. gallinae. The mean cycle duration of the different phases (in hours), at different temperatures was: Pre-oviposition: 86,7h at 15 °C; 24h at 20 °C; 24,21h at 25 °C; 24,24h at 30 °C and 24,05h at 35 °C. Egg: 214,30h at 15 °C; 67,7h at 20 °C; 42,11h at 25 °C; 38,70h at 30 °C and 51,77h at 35 °C. Larva: 163,44h at 15 °C; 34,73h at 20 °C; 29,44h at 25 °C; 24,85h at 30 °C and 32,23h at 35 °C. Protonymph: 81,25h at 15 °C; 73,06h at 20 °C; 30,35h at 25 °C; 25,66h at 30 °C and 26,4h at 35 °C. Deutonymph: 145,02h at 15 °C); 63,63h at 20 °C; 38,37h at 25 °C; 27,24h at 30 °Ca and 37,6h at 35 °C. Total cycle lenght: 690,75h (28 days) at 15 °C, 263,12h (11 days) at sob 20 °C, 164,63h (7 days) at 25 °C, 140,69h (6 days) at 30 °C and 172,04h (7 days) at 35 °C. The development of D. gallinae was higher at temperature of 30 °C, exhibiting the highest viability in the different phases and the shorter development time. The cycle time of D.gallinae decreased with the increase of temperature, from 690,75 at 15 °C to 140,69 at 30 °C. At 35 °C there was an increase in the cycle length and a drop in viability in all phases, suggesting that in warmer seasons D. gallinae population may decrease or even disappear for a period of time. No variations were found in pre-oviposition time at temperatures of 20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C. In the experiment where female samples were kept from 1 to 12 days of fasting, oviposition occurred up to the 11th day, with the highest rate up to the 3rd day, decreasing from the 4th day. We recommend that the interval of three days between feedings is the most adequate to maintain D. gallinae in the laboratory. Four or more days of interval between feedings are not recommended due to the low fecundity, less than 67,1%, found during those periods of time. The results on fecundity showed that the females began to lay eggs just after the first blood meal and continued to lay eggs up to the seventh day after the meal. The highest percentage of females (58%) laid eggs after the first meal. After the second meal this pencentage began to decrease until the eighth meal, when only one female was present, but it died before it was able to lay eggs. Dermanyssus gallinae females had a total of 7 oviposition cycles totaling 25 eggs. The thermal requirements for D. gallinae were determined, for basal temperature (Tb), thermal constant (k), determination coefficient (R2) and regression equations for preoviposition, egg, larva, protonymph and deutonymph phases. Different values for thermal requirements were found for each developmental phase of D. gallinae. Based on isothermal maps the incidence of D. gallinae in São Paulo State was estimated, verifying that it can develop continuously in São Paulo State, with a decrease in its population numbers during the winter, varying from 15 to 42 generations per year / Doutorado / Parasitologia / Doutor em Parasitologia

Effect of temperature and RH on the biology of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess, 1880) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.

Costa-Lima, Tiago Cardoso da 16 January 2008 (has links)
This research was aimed at studying the influence of temperature and relative air humidity (RH) on biological aspects of the leafminer Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess, 1880) in cowpea [(Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.)], to provide essential information for future biological control projects against this pest. An inverse relation was observed between development duration and temperature increase in the range from 15 to 32°C. Larval viability was not affected in the temperature range studied, while a high mortality of the pupal stage was observed at 32°C. The lower developmental temperature threshold obtained for the egg-adult period was low (7.3°C) when compared with other species of Liriomyza, and was rather low for the larval stage (3.4°C). Based on the thermal requirements verified for L. trifolii, it was possible to estimate the occurrence of 24.5 annual generations at a melon producing region in RN, Brazil. During the melon cropping season alone, the pest can produce 14.8 generations. Adult longevity decreased as temperature increased, and was always higher for females, regardless of temperature. The pre-oviposition and oviposition periods also decreased as temperature increased. Fecundity was similar in the range from 18 to 30°C, but decreased at 32°C; the oviposition rate pattern changed as a function of temperature. RH did not affect duration of the immature stages, although it had an influence on viability. Female longevity was affected by RH, since females lived longer than males under all conditions studied. Regardless of temperature and RH, L. trifolii laid between 83 - 87% of its eggs on the adaxial surface of the cowpea leaves. By cluster analysis it was defined that the most suitable temperatures for development of this insect are 28 and 30°C, while the most suitable RH was 50%. This research allowed a production system to be devised for L. trifolii, based on the temperature and RH requirements for its various stages of development, aimed at the production of natural enemies of the pest or other control alternatives.

Effect of temperature and RH on the biology of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess, 1880) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.

Tiago Cardoso da Costa-Lima 16 January 2008 (has links)

Multi-stage population models applied to insect dynamics

Benedito, Antone dos Santos January 2020 (has links)
Orientador: Cláudia Pio Ferreira / Abstract: This thesis presents two manuscripts previously sent to publication in scientific journals. In the first manuscript, a delay differential equation model is developed to study the dynamics of two Aedes aegypti mosquito populations: infected by the intracellular bacteria Wolbachia and non-infected (wild) individuals. All the steady states of the system are determined, namely extinction of both populations, extinction of the infected population and persistence of the non-infected one, and coexistence. Their local stability is analyzed, including Hopf bifurcation, which promotes periodic solutions around the nontrivial equilibrium points. Finally, one investigates the global asymptotic stability of the trivial solution. In the second manuscript, after rearing soybean looper Chrysodeixis includens in laboratory conditions, thermal requirements for this insect-pest are estimated, from linear and nonlinear regression models, as well as the intrinsic growth rate. This parameter depends on the life-history traits and can provide a measure of population viability of the species. / Doutor

Andrade, Rízia da Silva 15 January 2013 (has links)
Elasmopalpus lignosellus (Zeller, 1848) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), or cornstalk borer, is an important polyphagous pest and there is little knowledge regarding its biological control. The aim of this research was to study the biology of E. lignosellus reared on artificial diet under different temperatures in order to gather information to (i) develop integrated management strategies and (ii) select strains of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879 (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) for biological control programs. The following steps were performed to achieve the proposed goals: 1. Temperature effect on incubation period and E. lignosellus immature-adult period; 2. Table life of E. lignosellus fertility; 3. E. lignosellus behavior studies and oviposition preference; 4. T. pretiosum strain selection aiming E. lignosellus control. Based on the results, it\'s possible to conclude that: the ideal development temperature threshold of E. lignosellus is between 10°C and 37-38°C, therefore, it tolerates high temperatures; the higher immature-adult period viability at 30 and 32°C supports E. lignosellus\'adaptation to high temperatures; at 32ºC, E. lignosellus show elevated the net reproductive rate, since it increased 18.30 times for each genaration; E. lignosellus\' oviposition period was concentrated between 20 and 22 hours, always at the scotophase; most of E. lignosellus eggs was laid exposed, allowing parasitism by the egg parasitoidTrichogramma pretiosum; the selected T. pretiosum strain for E. lignosellus egg control is originated in the brazilian savannah, pointing out the parasitoid\'s specificity to certain climate conditions.
