Geochemistry of Variscan lamprophyre magmatism in the Saxo-Thuringian Zone

Abdelfadil, Khaled Mohamed January 2013 (has links)
Lamprophyres are mantle-derived magmatic rocks, commonly occurring as dikes. They are readily identified from their field setting, petrography, chemical and mineralogical composition. These rocks not only provide important information on melting processes in the mantle, but also on geodynamic processes modifying the mantle. There are numerous occurrences of lamprophyres in the Saxo-Thuringian Zone of Variscan Central Europe, which are useful to track the variable effects of the Variscan orogeny on local mantle evolution. This work presents and evaluates the mineralogical, geochemical, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data of late-Variscan calc-alkaline lamprophyres, post-Variscan ultramafic lamprophyres, of alkaline basalt from Lusatia, and, for comparison, of pre-Variscan gabbros. In addition, lithium isotopic signatures combined with Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data of late-Variscan calc-alkaline lamprophyres from three different Variscan Domains (i.e., Erzgebirge, Lusatia, and Sudetes) are used to assess compositional changes of the mantle during Variscan orogeny.

The Bauhaus and Weimar : rereading Goethe's Faust

Muller, Peter Max January 1993 (has links)
The addition to the College of Architecture and Design Weimar, the former Bauhaus Weimar, consolidates the two existing buildings designed by Henry van de Velde into a new complex with 40,000 sf of existing building and 100, 000 sf of new structure. The new facility contains a 300 seat auditorium, library, lecture and seminar rooms, administrative offices, cafeteria, photo lab and gallery as well as extended studios and offices.Contrary to the brief of the competition which only requires an addition for the Department of Architecture, the position taken here, proposes an interweaving of the Art and Architecture Departments. The Bauhaus interweaves these two schools in the same way as the definition of art and architecture have come to include each other. The additional structure integrates therefore the idea that the building is used both by architecture and art students.Since the project is for a College of Architecture and Art, I believe the new College of Art and Architecture must confront the challenges of current thinking; the search for a new integration of concept and form it must move over the deconstructive approach by achieving a complexity not as a contradiction but as an acceptance of the duality of existence. This interelationship is represented in the famous play "Faust". Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who spent almost 60 years (and most of them in Weimar) working on this piece, the play raises diverse and contradictory questions: 1. of knowledge, 2. of identity and 3. of morality in terms that reflect the 'doubleness' of all beings in nature. Faust becomes important when we recognize the memory of such themes in Weimar. The pieces, and hence, the structure of the play are not composed as a narrative but as an dialogue of different stories. The development of the design parallels the play in which the play becomes the concept and the concept becomes the play; several events - each centered on one major event- provide the scenes for the building. / Department of Architecture

The 'Passiones' of St. Kilian : cult, politics and society in the Carolingian and Ottonian worlds

Thornborough, Joanna January 2015 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the relationship between hagiography and cult in the early medieval west taken through the example of the Passiones of St. Kilian of Würzburg († 689) in the period from circa 700 to circa 1000 AD. Through examining a cult which developed east of the Rhine, this thesis will assess these developments taking place in a region without a strong Christian-Roman history. Thuringia produced new saints and cults in this period, yet they all operated within the overarching framework of the well-established religious phenomenon of saints' cults. In its approach, this thesis builds upon the insights of Ian Wood, James Palmer and others, in which saints' Lives are viewed as ‘textual arguments' which could operate beyond cultic contexts. This is combined with the cultural context approaches advocated in geographically specific studies by the likes of Julia Smith, Thomas Head and Raymond Van Dam. By paying particular attention to the impact of updating saints' Lives this thesis provides an in depth comparison of the relatively overlooked two earliest passiones of St. Kilian and their place in the history of the Würzburg community. It therefore addresses the nature and function of hagiography and its relationship with the institutional memory and identity of that community. The spread of cult through texts and relics is compared with the distribution of the hagiography in order to form a picture of the relationship between these different facets of cult. The question of the way in which these passiones engaged with their wider political and religious contexts is also addressed in order to demonstrate the functions of hagiography outwith an immediate cultic context.

Risiken des regionalen Klimawandels in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen

Franke, Johannes, Mellentin, Udo, Goldberg, Valeri, Bernhofer, Christian 05 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
A global warming of 1.4 to 5.8 °C has been forecasted for the end of this century – attributed mainly to the anthropogenic reinforcement of greenhouse gases. Mankind is thus influencing its living conditions through its own activities. This self-engendered risk will also concern and change the landscapes and people of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, e.g. through an increase in dry periods, heavy rainfall and summer heat exposure. This paper deals with these risks on the basis of current studies of the university department of meteorology, including the results of flood research and a regional climate analysis covering the past 50 years for the above-mentioned federal states of Germany. Additionally, the outcome of a regional climate prognosis is inte
