Urban Travel Time Estimation from Sparse GPS Data : An Efficient and Scalable Approach

Rahmani, Mahmood January 2015 (has links)
The use of GPS probes in traffic management is growing rapidly as the required data collection infrastructure is increasingly in place, with significant number of mobile sensors moving around covering expansive areas of the road network. Many travelers carry with them at least one device with a built-in GPS receiver. Furthermore, vehicles are becoming more and more location aware. Vehicles in commercial fleets are now routinely equipped with GPS. Travel time is important information for various actors of a transport system, ranging from city planning, to day to day traffic management, to individual travelers. They all make decisions based on average travel time or variability of travel time among other factors. AVI (Automatic Vehicle Identification) systems have been commonly used for collecting point-to-point travel time data. Floating car data (FCD) -timestamped locations of moving vehicles- have shown potential for travel time estimation. Some advantages of FCD compared to stationary AVI systems are that they have no single point of failure and they have better network coverage. Furthermore, the availability of opportunistic sensors, such as GPS, makes the data collection infrastructure relatively convenient to deploy. Currently, systems that collect FCD are designed to transmit data in a limited form and relatively infrequently due to the cost of data transmission. Thus, reported locations are far apart in time and space, for example with 2 minutes gaps. For sparse FCD to be useful for transport applications, it is required that the corresponding probes be matched to the underlying digital road network. Matching such data to the network is challenging. This thesis makes the following contributions: (i) a map-matching and path inference algorithm, (ii) a method for route travel time estimation, (iii) a fixed point approach for joint path inference and travel time estimation, and (iv) a method for fusion of FCD with data from automatic number plate recognition. In all methods, scalability and overall computational efficiency are considered among design requirements. Throughout the thesis, the methods are used to process FCD from 1500 taxis in Stockholm City. Prior to this work, the data had been ignored because of its low frequency and minimal information. The proposed methods proved that the data can be processed and transformed into useful traffic information. Finally, the thesis implements the main components of an experimental ITS laboratory, called iMobility Lab. It is designed to explore GPS and other emerging data sources for traffic monitoring and control. Processes are developed to be computationally efficient, scalable, and to support real time applications with large data sets through a proposed distributed implementation. / <p>QC 20150525</p>

Time estimation in humans: ontogenesis and circadian variation.

Miguel, Mario André Leocadio 06 December 2012 (has links)
Factors such as age, sleep and the ability to engage attention to time contribute to the subjective measure of the time flow. We aimed to describe the daily modulation in the production of time as a function of aging and to determine associations between temporal profiles of this behavior and the circadian rhythm of peripheral temperature and sleep/wake cycle. Our findings: (1) the prevalence of social Jet-lag in young adults; (2) a distinct arrangement in the internal temporal organization for each group; (3) the results for retired adults is in line with a prominent influence of the circadian drive, reflecting on changes in the speed of the system that keeps track of time throughout the day.

Estimation en temps fini de systèmes non linéaires et à retards avec application aux systèmes en réseau / Finite-time estimation of nonlinear and delay systems with application to networked systems

Langueh, Kokou Anani Agbessi 06 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis investigates the topology identification problem for network of dynamical complex systems, whose subsystems are described by ordinary differential equations (ODE) and/or delay differential equations (DDE). The first part of this work focuses on the parameters identification of the network of linear systems. Thus, different classes of linear systems have been treated namely systems without delay, systems with commensurable delay and systems with unknown inputs. An impulsive observer is proposed in order to identify both the states and the unknown parameters of the considered class of dynamic system in finite time. In order to guarantee the existence of the proposed impulsive observer, sufficient conditions are deduced. An illustrative example is given in order to show the efficiency of the proposed finite-time observer. The second part of this work treats the topology identification of the network of nonlinear dynamic systems. In our considerations, the topology connections are represented as constant parameters, therefore the topology identification is equivalent to identify the unknown parameters. A sufficient condition on parameter identifiability is firstly deduced, and then a uniform differentiator with finite-time convergence is proposed to estimate the unknown parameters

Leaf Area Index (LAI) monitoring at global scale : improved definition, continuity and consistency of LAI estimates from kilometric satellite observations

Kandasamy, Sivasathivel 13 March 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Monitoring biophysical variables at a global scale over long time periods is vital to address the climatechange and food security challenges. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a structure variable giving a measure of the canopysurface for radiation interception and canopy-atmosphere interactions. LAI is an important variable in manyecosystem models and it has been recognized as an Essential Climate Variable. This thesis aims to provide globaland continuous estimates of LAI from satellite observations in near-real time according to user requirements to beused for diagnostic and prognostic evaluations of vegetation state and functioning. There are already someavailable LAI products which show however some important discrepancies in terms of magnitude and somelimitations in terms of continuity and consistency. This thesis addresses these important issues. First, the nature ofthe LAI estimated from these satellite observations was investigated to address the existing differences in thedefinition of products. Then, different temporal smoothing and gap filling methods were analyzed to reduce noiseand discontinuities in the time series mainly due to cloud cover. Finally, different methods for near real timeestimation of LAI were evaluated. Such comparison assessment as a function of the level of noise and gaps werelacking for LAI.Results achieved within the first part of the thesis show that the effective LAI is more accurately retrievedfrom satellite data than the actual LAI due to leaf clumping in the canopies. Further, the study has demonstratedthat multi-view observations provide only marginal improvements on LAI retrieval. The study also found that foroptimal retrievals the size of the uncertainty envelope over a set of possible solutions to be approximately equal tothat in the reflectance measurements. The results achieved in the second part of the thesis found the method withlocally adaptive temporal window, depending on amount of available observations and Climatology as backgroundestimation to be more robust to noise and missing data for smoothing, gap-filling and near real time estimationswith satellite time series.

Indeed, bus trajectories provide a useful data source for analyzing traffic in the bus network of a city, if the city traffic authority makes the bus trajectories available openly, timely and in a continuous way. In this context, this thesis proposes a bus GPS data-driven approach for analyzing and monitoring the bus network of a city. It combines graph algorithms, geospatial data mining techniques and statistical methods. The major contribution of this thesis is a detailed discussion of key operations and algorithms for modeling, analyzing and monitoring bus network traffic, specifically: (1) modelling, analyzing, and segmentation of the bus network; (2) mining the bus trajectory dataset to uncover traffic patterns; (3) detecting traffic anomalies, classifying them according to their severity, and estimating their impact; (4) maintaining and comparing different versions of the bus network and traffic patterns to help urban planners assess changes. Another contribution is the description of experiments conducted for the bus network of the City of Rio de Janeiro, using bus trajectories obtained from June 2014 to February 2017, which have been made available by the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro. The results obtained corroborate the usefulness of the proposed approach for analyzing and monitoring the bus network of a city, which may help traffic managers and city authorities improve traffic control and urban mobility plans.

Hamryni, Adrian, Mohamed Ibrahim, Dahir January 2020 (has links)
In recent times delivery precision has become more important to customers, which today are characterized by being more time sensitive and constantly looking for products that are specifically tailored to the customer. Time is being seen as a criterion for competitors and it is important for companies to be able to compete in the market. Uncertainties in the current market have an effect on delivery precision and it is a major challenge for companies to plan production based on these uncertainties. When production for an article is planned, it should be planned in consideration of uncertainties, for example, a machine may break down, a defective product may need a rework or that it takes longer than planned to carry out an operation leading to a longer lead time. The purpose of the study was to identify causes of difference between planned and actual production time and to provide improvement suggestions to reduce the difference. The purpose has been achieved through a case study in AQ Group in Pålsboda with help of interviews where planned and actual production time has been investigated. A literature study has been used as well as three questions. These questions are: What is the difference between planned and actual production time? What are the causes of these differences? How can these causes be eliminated? During the theoretical section, the focus has been on cycle times, setup times, production time, Lean and production planning. The results show a total difference of 24% between the planned and actual production time over a 5-day period. Causes that have been found are that the standardized working methods are not up to date, are not mandatory for operators to perform and that there exist no illustrations for the standardization. Another cause is unnecessary work steps where tools is far away from the workstations and sometimes missing which leads to the production time being longer than planned. Lastly the study provides critical improvement suggestions that specifically affect the differences between planned and actual production times and general improvement suggestions that AQ Group in Pålsboda can take part of to streamline operations.

Mapping Concurrent Applications to Multiprocessor Systems with Multithreaded Processors and Network on Chip-Based Interconnections

Pop, Ruxandra January 2011 (has links)
Network on Chip (NoC) architectures provide scalable platforms for designing Systems on Chip (SoC) with large number of cores. Developing products and applications using an NoC architecture offers many challenges and opportunities. A tool which can map an application or a set of applications to a given NoC architecture will be essential. In this thesis we first survey current techniques and we present our proposals for mapping and scheduling of concurrent applications to NoCs with multithreaded processors as computational resources. NoC platforms are basically a special class of Multiprocessor Embedded Systems (MPES). Conventional MPES architectures are mostly bus-based and, thus, are exposed to potential difficulties regarding scalability and reusability. There has been a lot of research on MPES development including work on mapping and scheduling of applications. Many of these results can also be applied to NoC platforms. Mapping and scheduling are known to be computationally hard problems. A large range of exact and approximate optimization algorithms have been proposed for solving these problems. The methods include Branch-and–Bound (BB), constructive and transformative heuristics such as List Scheduling (LS), Genetic Algorithms (GA) and various types of Mathematical Programming algorithms. Concurrent applications are able to capture a typical embedded system which is multifunctional. Concurrent applications can be executed on an NoC which provides a large computational power with multiple on-chip computational resources. Improving the time performances of concurrent applications which are running on Network on Chip (NoC) architectures is mainly correlated with the ability of mapping and scheduling methodologies to exploit the Thread Level Parallelism (TLP) of concurrent applications through the available NoC parallelism. Matching the architectural parallelism to the application concurrency for obtaining good performance-cost tradeoffs is  another aspect of the problem. Multithreading is a technique for hiding long latencies of memory accesses, through the overlapped execution of several threads. Recently, Multi-Threaded Processors (MTPs) have been designed providing the architectural infrastructure to concurrently execute multiple threads at hardware level which, usually, results in a very low context switching overhead. Simultaneous Multi-Threaded Processors (SMTPs) are superscalar processor architectures which adaptively exploit the coarse grain and the fine grain parallelism of applications, by simultaneously executing instructions from several thread contexts. In this thesis we make a case for using SMTPs and MTPs as NoC resources and show that such a multiprocessor architecture provides better time performances than an NoC with solely General-purpose Processors (GP). We have developed a methodology for task mapping and scheduling to an NoC with mixed SMTP, MTP and GP resources, which aims to maximize the time performance of concurrent applications and to satisfy their soft deadlines. The developed methodology was evaluated on many configurations of NoC-based platforms with SMTP, MTP and GP resources. The experimental results demonstrate that the use of SMTPs and MTPs in NoC platforms can significantly speed-up applications.

Software Issue Time Estimation With Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning / Tidsuppskattning för mjukvaruärenden med språkteknologi och maskininlärning

Hyberg, Martin January 2021 (has links)
Time estimation for software issues is crucial to planning projects. Developers and experts have for many decades tried to estimate time requirements for issues as accurately as possible. The methods that are used today are often time-consuming and complex. This thesis investigates if the time estimation process can be done with natural language processing and machine learning. Three different word embeddings were used to represent the free text description, bag-of-words with tf-idf weighing, word2Vec and fastText. The different word embeddings were then fed into two types of machine learning approaches, classification and regression. The classification was binary and can be formulated as will the issue take more than three hours?. The goal of the regression problem was to predict an actual value for the time that the issue would take to complete. The classification models performance were measured with an F1-score, and the regression model was measured with an R2-score. The best F1- score for classification was 0.748 and was achieved with the word2Vec word embedding and an SVM classifier. The best score for the regression analysis was achieved with the bag-of-words word embedding, which achieved an R2- score of 0.380. Further evaluation of the results and a comparison to actual estimates made by the company show that humans only performs slightly better than the models given the binary classification defined above. The F1-score of the employees was 0.792, a difference of just 0.044 from the best F1-score made by the models. This thesis concludes that the models are not good enough to use in a professional setting. An F1-score of 0.748 could be used in other settings, but the classification question in this problem is too broad to be used for a real project. The results for the regression is also too low to be of any valuable use.
