Investigate the reasons why projects are virtually always completed late, not withstanding that advanced time planning techniques are freely available and applied

Konile, Mandlenkosi Moses 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / This thesis probes the range of factors affecting construction project delays through a literature review and survey of practical experience case studies. The focus is on engineering projects that were not completed in time. A total of eight articles have been studied and seven case studies surveyed. From the findings of this study it is noted that projects that do not complete in time could be categorised into three types namely Employer responsible (E), Contractor responsible (C) and Neither party responsible (N). The causes of delay identified from the literature study are superimposed on the causes identified from the case studies. Furthermore the causes of delay are classified in terms of importance, severity and frequency. It was established that causes resulting from design changes, ranked high in this classification whereas causes resulting from unprediotable weather conditions ranked low. Based on the literature review and the case studies, conclusions are drawn and finally recommendations are made.

Evening Meal Patterns and Meal Management Decisions in Families of Employed and Nonemployed Mothers

Stubbs, Rochelle L. (Rochelle Lundberg) 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to determine if evening meal patterns and meal management decisions are related to the marital and employment status of mothers. Two hundred eighty-two usable questionnaires were completed by mothers who attended elementary school parent-teacher meetings in a suburban city in North Texas. The questionnaire gathered data about family demographics, family evening meal patterns, and factors affecting meal management decisions. Little difference was found between meal patterns of employed and nonemployed mothers in single and two-parent households. Factors found to affect meal pattern decisions were values, traditions, time, energy, nutrition, and family influence. A traditional family evening meal was important to the families studied.

Gestão do tempo no cotidiano de médicos residentes de clínica médica em um hospital público universitário de São Paulo, Brasil / Time managing strategies in the daily routine of internal medicine residents in a public university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil

Torres, Rafael Augusto Tamasauskas 20 June 2018 (has links)
Introduction: Medical education concerns in a complex process which involves acquisition of a wide range of skills. This process develops from undergraduate education to medical residency, when it consolidates. As long as it is a recognized way of training, criticisms are made due to work overload, excessive working hours, and sleep deprivation. Objective: To describe and analyze strategies of time management in the daily life of Internal Medicine residents in a university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: In the first phase, 8 interviews were conducted with resident physicians addressing aspects of personal and family life, jobs, theoretical study and practical activities. Data analysis was carried out using the MaxQDA program. In the second phase, protocols of daily activities were filled by 7 residents, 5 in the preoperative evaluation internship and 2 in the adult emergency room internship. Individual and group averages of the time spent with residency activities, rest, leisure, study and other jobs were performed. Results: After data analysis, 5 categories were selected: a) Organization of work during the practical activities of the residence; b) Activity for learning or professional activity?; c) Housing, financial planning and domestic activities; d) Time for leisure and interpersonal relationships; e) Family planning / children; f) Rest / Sleep. Paid activities beside the residency program were reported and responsible for decreasing the rest, study and leisure time. During the night shifts was noticed a decrease of social and family ties due to the change of resting hours towards the daytime. For the group in the preoperative evaluation internship, were identified the median daily time in activity of 7,5h of working time, 6,7h of night rest, 2,2h of internal medicine theory study and 0h of daytime rest. For the adult emergency room internship group, the activities hours were 13,0h; 7,0h; 0h and 0h, respectively. Lastly, for night shifts routines, the activities hours were 12,5h; 0h; 0h and 7,1h respectively. Discussion: There are differences between described and factual work since the working shift length is higher than anticipated in some internships, due to intercurrences and medical visits in wards. Increasing the duration of residency programs would let a decrease of daily working hours, but would impact in the personal planning of resident doctors. Sleep deprivation gets worse in internships composed by shift hours, impacting in social relationships outside work. During working shifts is notable a worse performance, being reported incidents such as lab tests misreading and prescription mistakes. Conclusions: Resident physicians experience a period of intense learning that requires a high and complex workload with night and weekend shifts. For that, maternity/paternity is postponed to aim studies for board or fellowship exams. There are various strategies used to improve time management: housing around hospital, support of maid services at home, oncampus feeding and social support centered on other residents and medical staff.

Is Time on Their Side? : Exploring Faculty Time Management in Online and Blended/Hybrid Higher Education

Whalen, Martha Anne January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Alec Peck / Time management in faculty online and blended/hybrid higher education is becoming a major concern -- one that is likely complicated by recent growth in demand for these learning opportunities, rapid changes in necessary technologies, and the need for faculty training and development with respect to technology use. Using interview, survey and participant validation activities for gathering data, this qualitative study explored the association between: (1) the use of some specific time management practices (goal- setting; prioritization; delegation; use of supporting technology - including learning the technology; and work-life balance planning) and (2) instructor feelings of success and satisfaction when offering online and blended/hybrid courses. While this study identified valuable insights from current practitioners concerning time management of online and blended/hybrid teaching endeavors, findings were inconclusive with regard to identifying the association of any specific time management practice with success and satisfaction. Specifically, over one-third of participants did not believe their ratings of success and satisfaction related to their experiences managing their time when offering online and/or blended/hybrid course(s). Participant comments did indicate that learning the technology and goal-setting for professional development (two time management activities) were possibly associated with perception of success and satisfaction, but the nature of the association was unclear. Findings suggest the need for sharing practitioner insights on time management detailed herein, as well as pursuing additional research on the effectiveness of faculty implementation of time management practices on improvement of time management in online and blended/hybrid teaching environments. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. / Method for production planning and management of time in real estate projects.

De Filippi, Giancarlo Azevedo 11 April 2017 (has links)
Delays are common in the construction industry. They create many concerns for project performance and cause considerable losses to project parties. This research analyze the main causes of delay in construction projects, and it propose a structured method to improve the current use of time planning tools and control instruments. Initially, a literature review and a field survey with 50 real estate construction projects in Brazilian cities (built in a period of nine years) are conducted to identify the main factors influencing the delays. Next, tools and assumptions to improve the control of project deadlines are identified, thus avoiding the occurrence of various problems raised in the previous survey. This study also proposes a time management framework that consolidates these practices and tools studied. The viability of the practices is measured in other recent projects, by a second field survey in 8 recent construction projects. In addition, validation of the practices by professionals who work in planning processes in construction companies was done. Finally, the results of all these analyses are used to consolidate a method to avoid delay occurrence and to support good time management in real estate projects.

Inventory control and dynamic pricing for inventory systems with delivery time options. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Digital dissertation consortium

January 2010 (has links)
The efficiency of revenue management relies on the effectiveness of the strategies it employs. In the competing market nowadays, time has become an important concern at both demand and supply sides. With time-sensitive customers and additional benefits from intertemporal demand shift, we find that the sellers could turn to a time-differentiation based strategy as an effective revenue management tool. Motivated by real-life business issues of Toyota China dealerships, in this thesis, we consider stylized inventory-control models with delivery upgrades, in which the seller allocates its on-hand inventory to price and delivery-time sensitive customers. The seller provides two delivery-time options with different prices. Customers choose the proper purchasing option according to their heterogeneous preferences. The seller has two decisions: inventory commitment and inventory replenishment. The former addresses, within an inventory cycle, how on-hand inventories are allocated between the two classes of customers. The latter addresses, between inventory cycles, how the inventory is replenished. Furthermore, the seller may employ early delivery, namely upgrade, to achieve a higher inventory flexibility. We develop the optimal inventory allocation and upgrade, and inventory replenishment policies, and demonstrate that the optimal control can be characterized by a switching curve. Based on the basic model setting, we extend our analysis to include cases of upgrade cost, stock-out substitution, and capacity constraint. We further discuss the joint pricing and inventory decision. We obtain the form of the optimal joint policy, and show that the two strategies may well complement each other in our setting. When each is applied separately, their performances are also compared. To shed more light on the practical side, finally, we use the Toyota dealership data to calibrate the required parameters, and demonstrate the potential of the optimal inventory allocation and upgrade control. / Liang, Xiaoying. / Advisers: Houmin Yan; Youhua Chen. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 72-04, Section: B, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 118-124). / Electronic reproduction.

Wagner, Manuela Victora January 2010 (has links)
The continuous worry among organizations and its professional about time management competences are increasing the demand on short endurance courses on the subject. However, theories present the complex process involved in developing any kind of competence. The present research was about the individual time management competence development on short endurance courses on the subject. Throughout three research steps: documental, exploratory and quantitative studies, it was possible to build a theoretical framework of learning product, learning process, training impacts, individual competence notions; and to develop a time management competence notion and a framework of the its complexity levels. It was perceived that some students are capable to develop the individual competence proposed by time management courses after participation.
