Vertical motions at the fringes of the Icelandic plume

Schoonman, Charlotte Maria January 2017 (has links)
The Icelandic mantle plume has had a profound influence on the development of the North Atlantic region over its 64 Myr existence. Long-wavelength free-air gravity anomalies and full waveform tomographic studies suggest that the planform of the plume is highly irregular, with up to five fingers of hot asthenosphere radiating away from Iceland beneath the lithospheric plates. Two of these fingers extend beneath the British Isles and southern Scandinavia, where departures from crustal isostatic equilibrium and anomalous uplift have been identified. In this study, the spatial extent of present-day dynamic support associated with the Icelandic plume is investigated using receiver function analysis. Teleseismic events recorded at nine temporary and 59 permanent broadband, three-component seismometer stations are used to calculate 3864 P-to-S crustal receiver functions. The amplitude and arrival time of particular converted phases are assessed, and H-k stacking is applied to estimate bulk crustal properties. Sub-selections of receiver functions are jointly inverted with Rayleigh wave dispersion data to obtain crustal VS profiles at each station. Both inverse- and guided forward modelling techniques are employed, as well as a Bayesian, trans-dimensional algorithm. Moho depths thus obtained are combined with seismic wide-angle and deep reflection data to produce a comprehensive crustal thickness map of northwestern Europe. Moho depth is found to decrease from southeast (37 km) to northwest (26 km) in the British Isles and from northeast (46 km) to southwest (29 km) in Scandinavia, and does not positively correlate with surface elevation. Using an empirical relationship, crustal shear wave velocity profiles are converted to density profiles. Isostatic balances are then used to estimate residual topography at each station, taking into account these novel constraints on crustal density. Areas of significant residual topography are found in the northwestern British Isles (1400 m), southwestern Scandinavia (464 m) and Denmark (620 m), with convective support from the Icelandic plume as its most likely source. Finally, the irregular planform of the Icelandic plume is proposed to be a manifestation of radial viscous fingering due to a Saffman-Taylor instability. This fluid dynamical phenomenon occurs when less viscous fluid is injected into a layer of more viscous fluid. By comparing the thermal and convective characteristics of the plume with experimental and theoretical results, it is shown that viscous fingering could well explain the present-day distribution of plume material.

Uncovering signatures of geomorphic process through high resolution topography

Grieve, Stuart William David January 2016 (has links)
The measurement of topography is a key aspect of geomorphology research, and the prevalence of high resolution topographic data predominantly from Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) in the past decade has facilitated a revolution in the quantitative study of planetary surface processes. From this increased quality of data, many techniques have been developed to quantify processes occurring at diverse spatial and temporal scales; from the flow of material down a hill-slope to the uplift and subsequent erosion of mountain ranges. Such insights have identified signatures of processes imprinted on landscapes. These include physical processes such as wildfires and landslides, biological processes such as animal burrowing and tree throw, in addition to tectonic uplift and large scale sediment transport. These signatures are observed in both the morphology of hill-slopes and their connection to the channel network, thereby allowing measures of topography to provide quantitative measures of the rates of processes shaping the Earth’s surface. This thesis is concerned with the development and application of reproducible topographic analysis techniques, to yield new insights into hill-slope sediment transport and to provide accurate metrics for quantifying hill-slope properties, including hill-slope length (LH) and relief (R). The measurement of hill-slope length can be performed through the inversion of drainage density, or the analysis of slope-area plots. However, in Chapter 3 I present a method which quantifies the length of hill-slopes through the generation of hill-slope flow paths. The flow path method is shown to be the most reliable of these methods, and is able to provide measurements of the properties of individual hill-slopes, rather than the basin or landscape averaged techniques commonly employed. The topographic predictions of the LH-R relationship of the nonlinear sediment flux law, stating that the rate of sediment transport is nonlinearly dependent on hill-slope gradient, are also tested and contrasted with the predictions of a linear sediment flux law. This provides the first purely topography based test of a sediment flux law. Through the fitting of a prediction of the nonlinear flux derived model to these measurements of hill-slope length and relief, the critical gradient of each landscape, a key parameter in the nonlinear sediment flux law, is also constrained. A nondimensional framework for erosion rate and relief, which allows the comparison of hill-slopes with differing properties in order to identify landscape transience is presented in Chapter 4. This analysis technique builds upon the work performed in Chapter 3, utilizing similar measurements of hill-slope properties, including hill-slope length and relief. The software produced alongside this chapter is shown to reproduce the results of previous studies which have employed this technique. The method is employed on a new landscape in Coweeta, North Carolina where subtle evidence of topographic decay is presented, consistent with models of Miocene topographic rejuvenation in this location. A detailed sensitivity analysis of the technique is performed, highlighting the need for careful parameterization of any analysis, to ensure meaningful results. This method is also employed to estimate an average critical gradient for each landscape, presenting more evidence building upon the evidence presented in Chapter 3 that a broad range of critical gradients exist for any given landscape. The work presented in Chapter 5 attempts to constrain the limits of the geomorphic analyses presented in the previous chapters, when they are applied to low resolution topographic data. A series of topographic datasets are generated at resolutions ranging from 1 to 30 meters upon which topographic analyses are performed. I test two common channel extraction algorithms and find that a simple geometric method, which identifies tangential curvature thresholds in the landscape, provides a more accurate representation of the channel network in low resolution topographic data than a process based method which identifies the topographic signature of channel initiation. The measurement of curvature is also evaluated, and alongside the estimation of diffusivity, is shown to be sensitive to data resolution, however landscape properties also exhibit a strong control on these measurements, where the larger scale curvature signal of Gabilan Mesa, California is more robust than the sharp ridgelines of Santa Cruz Island, California. Finally, the techniques developed in Chapter 3 to measure hill-slope length and relief are tested and are shown to be robust at grid sizes up to 30 meters, with the caveat that an accurate channel network can be constrained.

Funcionalização de microtopografia de titânio com peptídeo sintético de colágeno I (P-15): efeitos sobre o desenvolvimento do fenótipo osteogênico in vitro / Development of the osteogenic phenotype in vitro on titanium surface microtopography functionalized with a type I collagen-derived synthetic peptide (P-15).

Karina Kimiko Yamashina Pereira 30 July 2010 (has links)
Surface functionalization of metallic surfaces with bioactive molecules has been developed aiming to promote specific cellular response at biomaterial-tissue interface. The present study evaluated the effects of surface functionalization of a microstructured titanium (Ti) surface with a synthetic peptide (P-15) analogue of the cell-binding domain of collagen I on key parameters of the progression of the osteogenic phenotype in vitro. Calvaria-derived osteogenic cells were plated on Ti disks: i) Machined; ii) with microtopography (Plus); iii) Plus with hydroxyapatite coating (Plus+HA); iv) Plus+HA with a low concentration of P-15 (P-15 low); v) Plus+HA with a high concentration of P-15 (P-15 high). High resolution SEM analysis showed that Plus exhibited a complex microtopography. In addition, a superficial layer of nano-sized needle-shaped HA was noticed for all modified Plus surfaces, although less apparent for P-15 high. Whereas all surfaces were hydrophobic at time zero, biofunctionalization showed a tendency to hydrophilicity at equilibrium. At 4 hours, Plus and modified Plus surfaces exhibited a lower proportion of spread osteogenic cells. At day 3, cells were less spread on the microtopographies, showing long cytoplasmic extensions. Epifluorescence revealed a large extracellular OPN accumulation for modified Plus surfaces. Although at day 3 cell viability was higher for modified Plus surfaces, at day 7 no major differences were detected among groups. Real time PCR showed for Plus and modified Plus surfaces: i) lower levels for RUNX2 at day 7 and for BSP at days 7 and 10, and higher OPN levels at days 7 and 10 compared with Machined; ii) higher ALP levels at day 10 compared with day 7. At day 10, Plus and modified Plus surfaces showed lower ALP activity compared with Machined. At days 14 and 21, higher proportions of Alizarin red stained areas were detected for cultures grown on modified Plus surfaces. The modification of Ti Plus surface by means of HA coating and functionalization with peptide P-15 alters the osteogenic potential of osteoblastic cell cultures, leading to an enhancement in mineralized matrix formation.

Marques, Mariana Tonietto January 2013 (has links)
The gold standard for the assessment and monitoring of postural deviations is the radiological examination. However, exposure to X-rays increases the risk to develop cancer. At this view, it is necessary the use of valid, repeatable and reproducible non-invasive methods to measure and monitor the progression of the postural deviations. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify if the Vert 3D system provides valid information regarding the postural deviations in frontal and sagittal planes of individuals of different age groups. Also, check the repeatability and inter-rater reliability of the Vert 3D system in sagittal and frontal planes. We evaluated the sagittal and frontal posture of 89 children of both sexes and different age groups. The evaluation consisted of two steps: radiological examination and Vert 3D system. The first step was performed by an experienced X-rays operator and from X-ray images were calculated Cobb angles in the sagittal and frontal planes. The second step was performed on the same day by three trained in the method evaluators. Was calculated the Vert 3D deformity angles in the sagittal and frontal planes and the Vert 3D scoliosis arrows. The first evaluator carried out two successive analyzes, the second evaluator then made two other successive analyzes and after the third evaluator made a single analysis. Were compared and correlated successive data of the each evaluator to verify repeatability, data from different evaluators to verify inter-rater reliability reproducibility and data from each system to verify the validity of Vert 3D system. For repeatability the in sagittal plane, was no difference (p>0.05) and the correlations were excellent (ICC≥0.750, p<0.05). For inter-rater reliability in the sagittal plane, was no difference (p>0.05) and the correlations were satisfactory (0.400 <ICC<0.750, p<0.05) for kyphosis in 6-10 years old and 16-18 years old individuals and for lordosis of 11-15 years old individuals and fine (ICC≥0.750, p<0.05) for kyphosis in 11-15 years old individuals 11 to 15 years and for lordosis in 6-10 years old and 16-18 years old individuals. And for validity in the sagittal plane, was significant differences (p<0.05) and the correlations between Vert 3D deformity angles (kyphosis and lordosis) and Cobb angles (kyphosis and lordosis) were moderate (0.400<r<0.699, p<0.05) for kyphosis in 11-18 years old individuals and for lordosis in 6-18 years old individuals. For the repeatability in the frontal plane, was no difference (p>0.05) and the correlations were satisfactory (0.400<ICC<0.750, p <0.05) to excellent (ICC≥0.750, p <0.05) for Vert 3D scoliosis arrows in 6-18 years old individuals and for Vert 3D deformity angles (scoliosis) in 11-18 years old individuals 11-18 years. For inter-rater reliability, was no difference (p>0.05) and the correlations were satisfactory (0.400<ICC<0.750, p<0.05) for Vert 3D scoliosis arrows in 6- 18 years old individuals and Vert 3D deformity angles (scoliosis) in 11-18 years old individuals. And for validity in the frontal plane, was significant differences (p<0.05) between the angles of the two systems and the correlations were moderate (0.400<rho<0.699, p<0.05) to the mean of Vert 3D scoliosis left arrows and the mean of Vert 3D deformity left angles (scoliosis). Considering the results for repeatability and inter-rater reliability of Vert 3D in both planes, the system can be used for monitoring the sagittal and frontal postures of 6-18 years old individuals 6-18 years from Vert 3D deformity angles (kyphosis and lordosis) and from Vert 3D scoliosis arrows. Moreover, it can be used for monitoring the frontal posture of 11-18 years old individuals from Vert 3D deformity angles (scoliosis). However, in the absence of validity related to the gold standard, the Vert 3D system cannot be used for diagnosis of Cobb angles (kyphosis, scoliosis, lordosis).

The city boundary in Late Antique Rome

Kneafsey, Maria Anne January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the changing meaning and conceptualisation of the city boundary of Rome, from the late republic and imperial periods into late antiquity. It is my aim in this study to present a range of archaeological and historical material from three areas of interest: the historical development of the city boundary, from the pomerium to the Aurelian wall, change and continuity in the ritual activities associated with the border, and the reasons for the shift in burial topography in the fifth century AD. I propose that each of these three subject areas will demonstrate the wide range of restrictions and associations made with the city boundary of Rome, and will note in particular instances of continuity into late antiquity. It is shown that there is a great degree of continuity in the behaviours of the inhabitants of Rome with regard to the conceptualisation of their city boundary. The wider proposal made during the course of this study, is that the fifth century was significant in the development of Rome – archaeologically, historically, and conceptually – but not for the reasons that are traditionally given. I have pushed back against the idea that this era was defined by its turbulence, and have constructed an argument that highlights the vast inheritance of the city of Rome that is so often ignored in discussions of the fifth century.

Chronology, topography and social change : a multi-linear perspective on the Chalcolithic to Bronze Age transition in Cyprus

Paraskeva, Charalambos January 2016 (has links)
Theories of socio-cultural change regarding the transition from the Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age in Cyprus have since the nascence of prehistoric archaeology on the island been the subject of lively debate between archaeologists who argue for internal versus external evolution processes. Yet, despite all efforts, a coherent model explaining the evident material culture differences between the two epochs remains elusive, an indication that the current polarization of theories masks inherent complexities of the archaeological record. Moving beyond the internal/external dichotomy, the present thesis argues for one such explanatory model and approaches this notable transition from three distinct and less explored aspects, namely chronology, pottery analysis and topography. Starting with chronology, the thesis assesses previous chronological schemata, examines issues of methodology, performs an in-depth data quality analysis, and, on the basis of the creative dialogue between absolute and relative dating data, proposes a novel chronology for the island. This chronology transcends linearity by adopting cultural period overlaps and differential regional adoption of technologies. Moving to spatial matters, the study disentangles space-time systematics for sites dating from the Middle Chalcolithic to the Philia Phase. In effect, it establishes a ceramic typology for the Chalcolithic that is applicable to the entire island; clarifies and records in a custom-made recording system, dubbed CARMA (Cyprus ARchaeological MAterials Relational Database System), the research history and material assemblages of each site; situates sites in the physical landscape of Cyprus and performs socio-spatial analyses, where the results of pottery analysis are interwoven with the spatial relationships between sites. The last analysis provides positive evidence for cultural uniformity in the Middle Chalcolithic, for the emergence of regional cultures in the Late Chalcolithic and the abandonment of settlements at the beginning of the Philia Phase, and for the co-existence of spatially distinct cultures during the Philia Phase. Lastly, the results of the chronology and spatial studies inform the data synthesis in the final section, where a different narrative of socio-cultural change is developed. This argues for the emergence of divergences already in the Late Chalcolithic, for the co-existence and uneven bi-directional interaction of indigenous and foreign populations during the Philia Phase, and for the development of regionalism in the Early Bronze Age as a result of variable adoption of technologies, entanglement and resistance to cultural identity assimilation.

Influência dos parâmetros de corte do fresamento HSM sobre o desempenho tribológico do aço AISI H13 endurecido. / Influence of HSM milling cutting parameters on tribological performance of hardened AISI H13 steel.

Daniel Hioki 30 June 2006 (has links)
Since 90, the HSM milling process to manufacture dies and molds has been applied and, more specifically, in finishing operation those components. In according to LFS/USP survey, among São Paulo region dies and molds users, the dies and molds life dispersion has been confirmed. This dispersion can be related with machining effects on tribological performance and, therefore, on dies and molds life and has not be explained by scientific community yet. Thus, the objective of this work is to verify if this dispersion is related with cutting parameters effects on tribological performance. In order to do it was necessary to determine the cutting parameters influence on surface integrity characteristics and how this characteristic affects the performance. AISI H13 Steel samples were machined by HSM milling by using manufacturing dies and molds methods. The investigated cutting parameters were: cutting speed (vc), cutting depth (ap), working engagement (ae) and feed per tooth (fz). The surface integrity characteristics measured were: roughness parameters by 3D profilometer method, white layer thickness by optical and scanning electronic microscopy, surface and transversal sub-layers section microhardness and residual stresses by x-ray diffraction. Before characterization, the tribometer in pin-plate with alternate movement configuration was performed to sliding wear the samples nearly cold forging conditions, to posterior correlation with cutting parameters. In this stage, the body was the AISI H13? 565 HV steel HSM milling samples and, the counter-body was pin of AISI 1020 steel. In the investigated parameter ambit one model is proposed which is able to predict the performance in topography character functions (Str, Sq, cavity formation index - CFI) and residual stresses. The white layer, which was intensely investigated by other researchers, has no significant influence because its formation occurs in the valley and not at the summits where the contacts occur.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Cleverson_Holocheski.pdf: 3361676 bytes, checksum: 7e3dfcfe4af0abe5639e043c72615586 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Whereas erosion is a process that detracts from the soil, reducing its productivity or even making impossible the food production in it, it is worth emphasizing the importance of studies on this topic, especially with explanations and solutions to problems found in areas that are degraded by erosive processes. The installation and evolution of this process depends on a number of factors, all of them related to the pedological cover and the shapes of slopes, such as those linked to the hydrology of the hillside. With emphasis on this type of erosion phenomenon, this work takes as its main objective to recognize the factors correlated with onset and progression of tunnels, particularly those concerning the characteristics of soils and landforms in a hillside of Rio das Pombas, in the city of Guarapuava, South Center of the Paraná State. To this end, the research was developed from a comprehensive pedological system approach, identifying and individualizing the units of soil through surveys, and also monitoring the rainfall and hydrological flows in order to observe the dynamics of subsurface water in that slope. The methodology used in the study was divided into four phases with the first phase was consisted basically of bibliographic content to be worked, then the second part of the research was carried out on field work, and in this phase samples for laboratory analysis were collected; the piezometers for monitoring of subsurface flows were installed and it was also installed the weather station to the collections related to rainfall. In the third phase, the work was focused on laboratory and office, where were then carried out the sizing analysis and also the preparation of cartographic material combined with the tabulation of data for the construction of graphs. The fourth and final phase was the analysis of integrated data, from which, through the analysis the results were achieved. In the case studied, the results indicated that the main factors of installation and maintenance of erosion of those tunnels were that related to the physical properties of pedologic cover, such as the particle size, the shape of the slope and mainly the hydrological conditions. Regarding the evolution of the erosion on that slope, it can be said that the tunnels in the future may finally become a crater, damaging the use of the area.

Poletto, Jean Carlos January 2018 (has links)
The present work describes the development and analysis of an experimental apparatus designed to evaluate the contribution of friction materials in vibrations induced on the surface of a brake disc. The proposed apparatus is equipped with a modal exciter (shaker), which was used to promote and control the excitation signal applied in the evaluated friction material. The response of this excitation in the disc surface was measured with accelerometers. The eight samples evaluated in this study was also characterized in terms of its friction coefficient and the asperity distribution of its surface. The modal characteristic of the disc was described in terms of its natural frequencies, damping and modal shapes, whose parameters were obtained by application of experimental modal analysis. The proposed apparatus was used to identify the main characteristics of the disc response when the excitation is applied throw the friction material. This case was also compared to the condition in which the disc was excited directly by the shaker. The most adequate metric to evaluate this experiment was selected as the mean value of the Frequency Response Function (FRF) spectrum, calculated by the H3 estimator The proposed apparatus showed being capable of identifying differences between the evaluated samples, regarding its propensity to produce vibrations on the disc surface. The samples were evaluated in with and without tribological film deposited on its surface. It was shown that the analyzed samples had the vibration increased with tribological film compared to the condition without the film. The obtained results demonstrated a strong correlation between the samples propensity to the production of vibration and the asperity distribution of the samples surfaces. These results indicate that friction materials with flat surfaces are capable to transmit more vibrations to the disc surface than those samples with rough asperity distribution.
