Arenas of service and the development of the Hindu nationalist subject in IndiaAlder, Katan January 2015 (has links)
The study of the relationship between Hindu nationalism and Hindu activist traditions of seva (selfless service) has been principally organised into three approaches: firstly, the instrumentalist deployment of the practice, secondly, the political appropriation of traditions of seva, and thirdly, that these related associational spaces are internally homogenous and distinct from alternative ‘legitimate’ religious arenas. These frameworks largely reflect approaches to Hindu nationalism which place emphasis on its forms of political statecraft and relationship to spectacular violence. These approaches raise manifold concerns. This thesis retheorizes the relationship between Hindu nationalism and seva with reference to primary and secondary sources, together with field research in the seva projects of the Vanavasi Kalyan Kendra (VKK), a Hindu nationalist association. Through deploying a reworked understanding of Fraser’s (1990) approach to associational space and Butler’s (1993, 2007) theorisation of performative acts and subject formation, this thesis contributes to rethinking Hindu nationalism and seva. I demonstrate firstly that the colonial encounter worked to produce a series of social imaginaries which were drawn upon to transform traditions of seva. Through their articulation in shared religious languages, practices of seva were productive of porously structured Hindu activist spaces in which the tradition was contested with regard to ‘radical’ and ‘orthodox’ orientations to Hinduism’s boundaries. Increasingly, articulations of seva which invoked a sangathanist ‘orthodoxy’ came to gain hegemony in Hindu activist arenas. This influenced the early and irregular Hindu nationalist practices of seva. Fractures in Hindu nationalist articulations developed as a result of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) sangathanist organisational idioms, allowing the association to inscribe its practices with pro-active meanings. In the post-independence period the alternative arenas of Hindu nationalist seva projects expanded greatly, a point evident in the degrees of dialogue between the Sangh and the sarvodaya movement. The importance of porous associational boundaries is further demonstrated through noting how engagement in visibilized arenas of popular Hindu religiosity worked to both broaden the fields of reference and vernacularize Hindu nationalist practices of seva. With reference to field research, I demonstrate that central to the expansion of the VKK’s arenas of service into spaces associated with Ayurvedic care is the incorporation of both refocused and transgressive practices. In the educational projects of the VKK, I note how seva works to inscribe daily practices of hygiene, the singing of bhajans and daily assemblies with Hindu nationalist meanings, and so works to regulate conduct through the formation of an ‘ethical Hindu self’. However, arenas of seva are also a location where we can witness subjects negotiating power. I demonstrate this through examining how participants in the VKK’s rural development projects rearticulate Othering practices of seva, with actors using the discourse to position themselves as active subjects, break gendered restrictions on public space, and advance an ‘ethically Hindu’ grounded claim on development and critique of power. This work illustrates that far from being of inconsequence to the circulation of Hindu nationalist identities, alternative arenas of seva operate as spaces where discourses are performatively enacted, refocused, transgressed and rearticulated. These acts contribute to the consolidation and disturbance of Hindu nationalist subject formations.

Two European Traditions of Tuba Playing as Evidenced in the Solo Tuba Compositions of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Paul Hindemith, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of W. Ross, R. Beasley, A. Russell, V. Persichetti, W.S. Hartley, N.K. Brown, J.S. Bach, and OthersSchulz, Charles A. 08 1900 (has links)
The lecture recital was given on June 16, 1980. The Ralph Vaughan Williams Concerto for Bass Tuba and the Paul Hindemith Sonate for Tuba and Piano were performed following a lecture on the historical evolution of the tuba in Europe. The lecture included a history of the predecessors of the tuba and their influence on the development of tuba playing traditions. Tuba performance practices in Europe developed around two playing traditions, one in France and England, and a second in Germany. The ophicleide enjoyed tremendous popularity in France and England during the early nineteenth century. Because this instrument was a major competitor of the tuba in these countries, the tuba was viewed as an ophicleide replacement. Tubists in Europe and England had to develop facility and sound quality equivalent to that of the older instrument. In Germany the tuba's main competitor was the Russian bassoon, a form of upright serpent. At this same time the serpent and its related forms were in decline. This lack of popularity with the older instruments provided an opportunity for the quick adoption of the tuba in Germany.

Previous issue date: 2012-03-30 / Our study aims to understand the social representations of Kanaimî, the shaman and the people Tarenpokon Macuxi, in Canta's Galo and Maturuca's Villages, located in northeastern Roraima. Aimed to deepen the ideas that the Indians of these places have these characters on the
culture in order to make their meaning and relate them to the religion. The initial research was literature in order to observe how the Kanaimî understood, and the shaman Tarenpokon in the past. We conduct interviews, which were used to support the verification of representations today, and analysis with reference to the theory of social representation. The Kanaimî, spiritual and starring as a
character constant violent attacks, manifests and promotes terror to Indians. This causes the Indians to perform a series of rituals in order to keep them away from their paths. The shaman, as a trustee for many health and spiritual problems of the indigenous Macuxi, media to solve these problems together with the spiritual beings as possible. The Tarenpokon also as a healer capable of providing health, conducts prayer sessions that acts on the various "bichos" (bugs) to keep them or convince them to
heal people. We relate these explanations to the cosmovision of the Macuxi to understand its religious manifestations. We have based historical studies and socio-anthropological aspects of the existing religious Macuxi that relate to the characters - Kanaimî, shaman and Tarenpokon - expanding their social representations and specifying the meanings they have / Nosso estudo visa a compreender as Representações Sociais do Kanaimî, do Piya san e
pesquisa inicial foi bibliográfica, visando a observar como entendiam o Kanaimî, o Piya san e o
Tarenpokon no passado.
possuem

Hudební aspekty fenoménu Living History v českém historickém šermu optikou etnomuzikologie / Musical aspects of the Living History phenomenon in the Czech historical fencing through the perspective of ethnomusicologyNovák, Josef January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this musical anthropology thesis focuses on "medieval music" as practiced by fans of historical fencing in the form of living history on the example of two Czech bands - Subulcus and Medieval Open Band as part of project Prácheňská manství. In my thesis I focus not only on sound and musical instruments, but also on the behavior of actors and their conceptualization of the Middle Ages, according to the concepts of music as culture of Allan Merriam, resp. of music as social life of Thomas Turino. I combine here the basic ideas of ethnomusicology with the ideas of musical memory in connection with the contemporary concepts of social memory and, last but not least, with the concepts of "golden age", nostalgia, staged authenticity and invented traditions. The point of this work is to bring about the origin and form of music that the actors understand as medieval, although not always comes the repertoire from the Middle Ages.

CAN STUDYING ABROAD CHANGE THE ATTITUDE OF SAUDI MALES ON SEX SEGREGATION?Yaser Saleh R Almalki (9712952) 16 December 2020 (has links)

This study aimed at investigating the divergence
in attitudes between Saudi students who have lived in the United States for
four years or more compared to Saudi students who have not lived outside Saudi
Arabia for more than a three-month period. A survey was designed based on the
main aspects of Saudi culture for this study as surveys are found to be the
most common means for measuring attitudes. Two samples of Saudi students were
recruited, one sample included students who have lived in the United States for
four years or more, and the other sample consisted of those who have not lived
outside Saudi Arabia for more than three months. A statistically significant difference
between the two samples was found; students who have lived in the United States
for four years or more were found to be more tolerant than those who have not
lived abroad for more than three months towards the issue of sex segregation in
mixed environments.
Grabenbummel- Procházka po Příkopech / Grabenbummel- The walk on PříkopySmrček, David January 2020 (has links)
(in English): "Grabenbummel", a walk of the German Studentenverbindungen in couleur, was one of the most significant displays of a national war over Prague and its public space. Four times between 1898 and 1912 the "bummel" gave opportunity for unrest and riots in the city. Not only it became a political topic, a reason for conflicts between Czech and Germans in the media, Bohemian Diet and Imperial Council, but also a very serious problem for the state and its offices to solve. Based on Czech and German press and archive resources from Národní Archiv České republiky and Österreichisches Staatsarchiv, I am presenting the creation, evolution, and the politicization of the custom. I examined the four main years of the riots, finding multiple important topics, and analyzing some of them in the last chapter. I complemented the thesis with the poems from the press of the Burschenschaften, as well as Czech and German anecdotes and caricatures.

The relationship between Andean traditions and narrative strategies is a process that little has been explored, and that is why in this analysis of the feature film Retablo, it is further developed how they were able to complement both points to develop the film. This film production has an extensive repertoire of awards, which demonstrates its good narrative approach. Despite all this, there is little research that delves into this type of relationship. For this reason, in this research, the use of Andean traditions as a tool for narrative strategy is analyzed from the nine scenes in which they appear. Therefore, the main contribution of this research is to provide relevant information for those looking for other tools for the development of film projects. / Trabajo de investigación

ResPublica/Civitas Socialis – Strachotín, l. p. 2017 / ResPublica/Civitas Socialis - StrachotínGutmanová, Daniela January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to define the vision (in concrete proposals) for the functioning of community, socio-social, leisure and other activities in the village. The vision as such emerged on the basis of analyzes already in the last semester, on its basis, we come to the solution of a partial project, which should show the municipality how to go and why. Representatives and residents of Strachotín have for a long time been considering certain steps, construction works of varying extent, which would strengthen the population, their possibilities in using the potential of the place (wine, tourism) and the village returned the lost face. There is only a small distance between the village and the end of the village in the direction of Pálava, but there is an important urban area - the surroundings of the church - which is historically very important and it hides its potential. In my work, I have commissioned him to uncover it and try to inspect what she can offer. Not only for tourists, but also for locals.
