The aim of this study is to examine some teachers and assistants’ perception of conditions for students’ democratic participation in the compulsory school for learning disabilities specialization training school. In order to deepen and more clearly describe the purpose of the study, three issues have been selected. Firstly, how do teachers and assistants perceive the concept of participation? Secondly, how do teachers and assistants perceive students opportunities for participation in teaching? And finally, do teachers and assistants perceive students’ opportunities for participation in democratic activities of school? It is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. A total of four interviews are included: two with teachers and two with assistants. The study has Shier’s (2001) model of participation as a theoretical basis. The study shows that teachers and assistant’s perception of participation can be divided into three areas. One is the point of view of making the students’ voices heard. The second is the idea that the students are given the opportunity to make choices, and finally participation perceives as the right to be part of a context. The results also show that teachers and assistants perception of the student’s opportunity to participation in education extends to the opportunity to make choices in every-day-school-life and not to actively participate in their own learning process. Finally, the results show that teachers and assistant’s perception of students’ opportunities to participate in democratic processes are limited within the training school.

Propagating Perfection: Eugenic Sterilization at the Utah State Training School, 1935 - 1974Rust, Jennifer 01 May 2017 (has links)
Compulsory sterilization as a tool of eugenics occurred in the United States from before the U.S. Supreme Court upheld its’ constitutionality in 1927 until the early 1970s. Initial justification for removing a person’s ability to procreate was rooted in hereditarian assertions that disability was transmitted from parent to offspring, and incorporated an economic argument that individuals with disabilities placed a financial burden on the state for care. Due to scientific deconstruction of the hereditarian argument, rationalization for sterilization evolved into an anxiety over the perceived inability of the disabled to parent. The state of Utah sterilized 738 individuals with intellectual disabilities from 1935 to 1974. This paper explores how Utah was similar to other states in terms of implementing compulsory sterilization through the establishment of the Utah State Training School and the philosophy of its leadership team.

Disposition of forty mentally retarded patients presented by the Pre-parole Service to the Social Service Planning Staff from March through October 1959, Rosewood State Training School, Owings Mills, MarylandUnknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study was to survey the cases of forty mentally retarded patients who have been presented by the Pre-parole Service to the Social Service Planning Staff of the Rosewood State Training School, Owings Mills, Maryland, from March through October 1959, in order to describe the differences--if any--on 18 selected items between the 28 retarded patients approved and the 12 disapproved for eventual return to the community. It was anticipated that such an analysis might more clearly define the term 'readiness for parole'"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1960." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: Merle M. Characteristics of five mentally deficient patients being considered for discharge from Rosewood State Training School, Owings Mills, Maryland, December, 1958Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study was to describe to a limited degree the characteristics of five patients of the Rosewood State Training School under consideration for discharge from the institution through the Community Adjustment Unit during December, 1958. It was believed that a case study of five patients would reveal some of the observable factors which may have influenced these five patients being ready for discharge. In addition, the five case illustrations descriptively present the function and procedures of one unit of the Social Services Department, Rosewood State Training School, Owings Mills, Maryland"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1959." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: Dorothy D.
