Advancement of the Adivasis: the effect of development on the culture of the Adivasis

Akta, Jantrania 27 April 2009 (has links)
Laws and policies have created a legal context aimed at allowing the adivasis to develop socioeconomically while retaining the aspects of their culture that they value the most. While the adivasis still face numerous challenges, it is evident that many have achieved successful economical advancement as a result of the legal framework established upon independence in 1947. Yet, it has also been acknowledged that economic advancement can undermine aspects of culture that are essential to the identity and dignity of the adivasis. Such a loss can result from exogenous factors such as government policy and the actions and beliefs of nontribals, or from endogenous factors such as the willingness of the adivasis to adopt the values of nontribals.

The history of abakwaMthethwa

Mthethwa, Absalom Muziwethu. January 1995 (has links)
A research project submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for B.A. Honours degree in the Department of History at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 1995. / AbaKwaMthethwa form a very important component of the Zulu nation as we know it today. They were in fact the vanguards in the implementation of the idea of a confederation of smaller states (clans) under one supreme ruler or a king who become their overlord. The history of abaKwaMthethwa is so wide that one would need volumes to do justice to it. This project is only going to deal with their movement from around uBombo mountains round about AD 1500 to 1818 when king Dingiswyo was assassinated by Zwide, inkosi of the Ndwandwe people. This project will furthermore concentrate on the life of Dingiswayo from the time he escaped death from his father. The project also seeks to examine the controversy surrounding Dingiswayo's formative journey. It is intended that Dingiswayo's influence and his contribution socially, politically, military and economically to the upliftment of the Mthethwa confederacy will be examined. Finally mention will be made of the royal imizi, some principal imizi not necessarily royal ones, as well as religious imizi that are to be found at KwaMthethwa.

The Evolution of the Treatment of Captives by the Indians of the Northeastern Woodlands from Earliest European Contact Through the War of 1812

Carlisle, Jeffrey Deward 12 1900 (has links)
When the first Europeans set foot on the North American continent, they clashed, both physically and culturally, with the native inhabitants. The Indian practice of taking, adopting, and sometimes torturing captives offended the Europeans more than any other practice. The treatment afforded to captives varied from tribe to tribe and tended to change as the Indians adapted to the new environment and adjusted to the increased pressure thrust upon them by the advancing whites. The primary sources used were Indian captivity narratives. The 111-volume "Garland Library of North American Indian Captivities" has made many of the better known narratives more readily available.

Moraes, Thiago Assunção de 17 April 2013 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Arquivototal.pdf: 1791319 bytes, checksum: 52bc8424263fb639549a11a96839fbd1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-04-17 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The initiative to create a virtual community has given to Brands the possibility of approaching the consumer and understands how the interactions occur between them, to the point of creating a grupal identity and a commitment in the light of experiences. However, the creation does not guarantee that consumers will be willing to have these same experiences with the brand and its products, but will make noticeable a standardization of behavior that leads to consume, based on cultural dimensions that involve local, rituals, artifacts, affection and shared awareness, giving rise to a tribe of consumption. Thus, to analyze the process that takes a virtual community of consumption to behave as a tribe, this study appropriated qualitative procedures to capture individuals' speech patterns, obtained by the use of netnography, reflecting the sense of e-tribe. These individuals were selected from the intensity of their interactions in the virtual community chosen, defined as Insiders and Devotees, where, in Social Representations Theory, the process of Anchoring generated their collective opinion, giving rise Discourses of Collective Subject to that evidenced in peladeiro.com.br community, a tribe behavior depending on the peladas (informal soccer games) and not exactly the brand sponsor of the virtual community. The data were analyzed by analysis of collective opinion with the help of software Qualiquantisoft, which allowed the generation of anchors forming DCS s (Discourses of Collective Subject) who responded to the research objectives. The results generates to the academic and managerial environments another approach in studies of virtual brand communities and the opportunity to understand the relationship of tribe that involves consumption and consumers so that these perspectives bring knowledge in marketing that provide balance in the exchange system . The study brings in its findings the elements found in the social relations of a virtual community that make this community a tribe. The limitations of the study that are offered at the end of work, can be seen as opportunities to expand knowledge both in the field of Marketing Theory as involved.

Tribal education in India: an examination of cultural imposition and inequality

Mukherjee, Anirban January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / W. Richard Goe / ABSTRACT This qualitative research study explores the cultural dissonance promoted in Indian tribal students by participation in the mainstream Indian educational system and the changes this has brought to their lives. Previous studies have tried to analyze the problem from four theoretical perspectives: biological interpretation, the socio-economic perspective, inter-colonization theory, and the cultural reproduction perspective. This study examines the applicability of these perspectives in analyzing the participation of Indian tribal students in the Indian education system. It attempts to identify elements that are incompatible with tribal culture, examine the difference in educational achievement between the tribal elites and their downtrodden counterparts, assess the social standing of the tribal graduates, and examine teachers’ conception of tribal students. The study used a non-experimental, cross-sectional research design with the main tools of data collection being observation and personal interviews. The study was conducted on the Santal, Birhor, Kharia and Lodha tribes located in Bankura, Birbhum, Puruliya, and Paschim Medinipur districts of the state of West Bengal in India. Personal interviews were conducted with tribal students, graduates, parents, teachers, and principals of tribal schools. The research revealed that the modern education system makes little attempt to address cultural specificities in designing education policies for tribal students which results in the development of a negative self-image. Moreover, although claimed to be free by the Indian government, achieving success in the education system involves subsidiary costs like private tution which represents an obstacle for poverty stricken tribal families. The problem is further complicated due to the unempathetic attitudes and beliefs of teachers and the ill-conceived developmental policies designed by educational planners that fail to incorporate curricular elements compatible with tribal culture.

Urbanization and Tribalism in Nigeria, 1911-1963

Sijuwade, Philip Oyebowale 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is the description of the past and present trends in the process of urbanization in Nigeria. In addition, the study explores tribal practices and perspectives in Nigeria's urban areas, giving special attention to the bases for the continuous existence of these phenomena. The data used in the study are obtained from books, government documents of both the United States and Nigeria and the. United Nations demographic analysis documents. The study is divided into five chapters. Based on findings and research of this study, the conclusion is drawn that adaptation to Nigeria's urban life proceeds through modification of the traditional institutions and their combination with Western cultural values, technology and economic practices into a new social structure.

The periphery and its elites : conduits of political order or change ?

Azoulay, Rivka 27 June 2016 (has links)
Since the unfolding of the Arab revolts in 2011, we have witnessed the rise and revolts of marginalized communities at the periphery of power everywhere in the MENA region. Kuwait too has witnessed since the start of the millennium the rise of its periphery, its naturalized tribesmen, latecomers to the nation’s fabric. In this study, I analyzed this phenomenon and placed it in its deeper historical and political context. I explained that the implications of socio-political change happening within Kuwait’s badu population can only be understood if the nature of the authority structure of the Al-Sabah’s monarchy is properly comprehended. The novelty of the thesis lies in its historical sociological approach to decipher the nature of political order and authority in Kuwait. It argued that the core aspects of the contemporary authority structure of the Al-Sabah’s monarchy can be traced back to the original tribal dynasty functioning according to the logics of political power of Arabian dynasties as analyzed by the early Muslim scholar, Ibn Khaldun in his Al-Muqaddimah.
