Factors associated with the HIV transmission rate in 18 to 24 month-old children enrolled in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission programme at the City of Tshwane clinicsMoloko, Sophy Mogatlogedi 15 August 2014 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to identify factors associated with the HIV transmission rate in 18 to 24 month-old children enrolled in the PMTCT programme at two selected City of Tshwane clinics. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV during labour and breastfeeding accounts for 40% of all HIV infection in children. The prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programme is one effective strategy to reduce the rate of HIV infection in children. The HIV transmission rate was low at six weeks of age but increases at 18 to 24 months of age due to several factors.
The researcher selected a descriptive retrospective correlational research design. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 60 mothers of children aged 18 to 24 months on the PMTCT programme and a data-collection form to collect data from 152 clinic records of children of the same age on the programme.
The study found that the PMTCT guidelines were not properly adhered to by the nurses and the respondents. Prophylactic treatment was not provided as required and mixed feeding was prominent. The uptake of HIV test at 18 to 24 months was low compared to at 6 weeks. The transmission rate was high at 18 to 24 months compared to at 6 weeks. No factors were associated with the transmission rate / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Lecturers’ experiences of the implementation of the National Certificate (Vocational) in technical vocational education and training colleges in South AfricaKanyane, Motswalle Christina 01 1900 (has links)
The Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system in South Africa has undergone transformation. This includes the introduction of the National Certificate (Vocational) [NC (V)]. The literature on curriculum development and on the TVET college sector in South Africa informed a qualitative inquiry into the lecturers’ experiences of the implementation of the NC (V). The research site was the Tshwane South TVET College, Gauteng Province. Data were gathered by means of individual and focus group interviews with the Campus Manager, four Divisional Heads, and seven lecturers, selected by means of purposeful sampling. The findings were organised around the following key themes, namely the limited participation of the lecturers in curriculum design, the effectiveness of curriculum dissemination, the lecturers’ participation in curriculum review, their perceptions of the NC(V) entry level requirements, the NC(V)’s positioning on the NQF, assessment in the NC(V), the fit between the lecturers’ qualifications and the curriculum, the lecturers’ capacity-building, and finally, their perceptions of the involvement of the industry in the NC(V). / Educational Studies / M. Students' perceptions of the role of the library in their studies at Tshwane University of Technology, Polokwane CampusMalatji, Kwetepe Julious 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ perceptions of the role of the library in their studies. A positivist research paradigm was employed and quantitative and qualitative research approaches were followed. The research design was a case study. Three sampling methods were used in the study. To obtain a sample of the students, stratified random sampling and systematic sampling were applied. In the case of the library staff, purposive sampling was used. Data was collected from students and a limited number of library staff using questionnaires and interview schedules respectively. The latter was for the purpose of validating and collecting complete data from students. The findings of the study revealed that students at TUT, PC have positive perceptions of the library and are satisfied with library services. The findings of the study further revealed that students find the library to be user-friendly and they use the library to borrow materials, read their own notes and books, access the internet and study.
Factors, such as opening and closing hours, a conducive environment for studying, and knowledge of the library staff helps the library to contribute to students’ achievement outcomes. Moreover, the findings reveal that lack of resources, non-attendance of information literacy programmes by students, a lack of research support, and an inadequate infrastructure hinder the library’s contribution to students’ achievement outcomes. The research recommends that there should be a credit-bearing and compulsory information literacy programme offered as part of the curriculum at all levels of study at TUT, PC. Furthermore, library staff need to engage and interact well with students in order to better meet the needs of individual students. They should have continuous engagement with students and notify them about important events within the library. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science) / 1 online resource (xii, 94 leaves) ; color charts

Volhoubare voorsiening van geselekteerde munisipale dienste in Centurion : 'n polities-geografiese ondersoek / The sustainable provision of selected municipal services in Centurion : a politico-gepgraphical investigationDe Jager, Anna Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In this study the relationship between political decision making, spatial change and
provision of selected municipal services was investigated. Legislation and policy,
spatial demarcation and local government structures are determined by political
decision making on various government levels. The international system as well as
the local history and factors leading to spatial change impact on municipal
demarcation and service delivery. Demographic change due to re-delimitation of
boundaries, densification within the area of jurisdiction and immigration imply that
service requirements change.
In 1994/5, the rural and residential areas were incorporated to the former
Verwoerdburg and formed the Southern Pretoria Metropolitan Substructure
(Centurion). In December 2000 Centurion lost its autonomous status and was
incorporated as administrative unit into the larger Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
Restructuring have implications for the political representation of communities, the
spatial extension of service networks, priority areas, and the location of service
provision points.

Munisipaliteit geinkorporeer.
Herstrukturering het implikasies vir die politieke verteenwoordiging wat gemeenskappe
geniet, die ruimtelike uitbreiding van diensnetwerke, prioriteitsgebiede en die
plasing van dienstevoorsieningspunte. / Geography / M.A. (Geografie)

Discontent among registered nurses in the public health sector in Tshwane Metropolitan areaNgwenya, Vindi Sarah 12 1900 (has links)
The researcher used the integration of both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
The respondents were drawn from three district, one regional, one academic and two
private hospitals. Data was collected by means of questionnaires. The open-ended
questions in the questionnaire allowed the respondents to respond in their own words
(“etic” description). This enhanced the organisation and reduction of the relevant data
for analysis as well as the validity and trustworthiness of the study.
The study revealed that even though most of the South African government health
policies were very advanced and among the best in the world, some crucial policies
appeared to have encountered problems with implementation, from conflicting
ideologies and opinions from hospital management, different unions, professional
associations, the provincial government, the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and
patients. Too many groups appeared to have discussed nurses‟ issues with government
and made decisions for nurses, leaving nurses disillusioned. The majority of the
respondents attributed this to poor representation at government level. Furthermore,
some decisions, resolutions and strategies agreed upon between the unions and
bargaining councils appeared to have worked against nurses, further dividing RNs and
failing to accomplish the intended purpose.
Although most of the respondents had hoped that the Occupational Specific
Dispensation (OSD) for nurses would address chronic low salaries for all nurses in the
PHS, it favoured certain specialty qualifications (which were based on the description of
post-basic courses in R212 and R48, which were not clearly delineated). In addition,
RNs were not informed about the meaning and implications of the OSD prior to
implementation. The study thus found an information gap between government and RNs
at the production level, which appeared not to be with the government and the nurses,
but in between.
Most importantly, nurses seemed to be represented more by unions to government and
bargaining councils, as opposed to nurses, while most of the respondents did not favour
the division of nurses between professional associations and unions. Decisions in the
PHS appeared to have been dominated by leaders who had no experience with
pragmatic issues of health care services (HCS), particularly at the operational level, and
the dynamics of the nursing profession.
The study therefore concluded that, if the right people (nurses, doctors and systems)
were put in place, and nurses were represented by nurses at government level,
bargaining councils and parliament, discontent among RNs in the PHS could be
reduced significantly. Existing strategies were found to deal with the symptoms and not
the root cause of discontent among RNs in the PHS. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Health Studies)

A geographical interpretation of the interplay between urban development, conservation, and sense of place of urban greenspace in Rietvlei Nature Reserve, Tshwane, South AfricaDe Jager, Anna Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / In an increasingly changing world, the attributes of human and physical
environments are critical in assessing human quality of life (HQoL). The research
sources consulted for this thesis point to specific relationships between urban
change, ecosystem services and the HQoL. A variety of models have been
developed in the global North to assist urban planners to manage the benefits and
stressors related to urban shrinkage, ecosystems and HQoL. In the global South
the trend is urban growth rather than shrinkage and few models are available for
this context.
Based on a mixed-method case-study approach, the Rietvlei Nature Reserve,
located in the rapidly-growing urban peripheral zone between the Tshwane and
Ekurhuleni metropolitan areas in the Gauteng province of South Africa, was
selected to assess the benefits and stressors of localised urban development,
conservation and sense of place. The purpose of the assessment was to develop
a Greenspace Stress Model of Urban Impact (GSMUI) that would be of value to
local authorities in managing the interplay of the varied functions of a nature
reserve as a greenspace in the global South. Land-use changes were analysed
using remote-sensing images. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with
purposively-selected key informants to evaluate the functions of the Reserve and
the objectives of the Ecological Management Plan for the Reserve. The benefits
and risks to the Reserve, as well as the sense-of-place aspects, were identified
through semi-structured interviews with 18 purposively-selected key informants,
181 on-site face-to-face semi-structured interviews with visitors to the Reserve,
group discussions with interest groups and electronic surveys involving 365
respondents. Data were also collected through the researcher’s own observations
and her participation in activities at the Reserve. The empirical results of the
research were verified by 14 purposively-selected key specialist informants, who
evaluated and ranked the identified benefits and stressors. Benefits and stressors
were not ranked the same from different perspectives.
Using the results of the empirical research, the researcher was able to merge and
adapt a number of models developed for the management of greenspaces in the
global North in order to develop the GSMUI specifically for the Rietvlei Reserve.
Guidelines were also developed for the application of the GSMUI in geographically
similar greenspaces in the global South. / In ‘n toenemend veranderende wêreld, is die eienskappe van menslike en fisiese

The management of parent involvement in historically disadvantaged secondary schools in Tshwane West District, GautengRamadikela, Phillip Mahlodi 06 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine the management of parent involvement in historically disadvantaged secondary schools in Tshwane West district, Gauteng. A literature study was undertaken to investigate the existing theories and models of parent involvement as well as their practical application. A literature study was also done to explore the historical development of the management of parent involvement in South Africa. The advantages of and barriers to parent involvement were also investigated through the review of both local and international literature. An interpretive, qualitative approach was adopted and an investigation of the management of parent involvement was conducted in three of the selected historically disadvantaged secondary schools in Tshwane West district, Gauteng. In-depth interviews were conducted with principals and focus-group interviews were held with three teachers as well as three members of the School Governing Bodies of each of the three selected schools. The overall impression was that the extent of parent involvement in the education of their children was very minimal due to the inability of the School Management Teams, especially school principals, to initiate, facilitate and sustain organisational structures and management processes which would ensure the effective involvement of parents in the education of their children. As a result of those findings, it was realised that a need existed to equip members of the management teams, including school principals, with appropriate skills that would assist in the implementation and sustenance of effective parent involvement programmes. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. A public-private partnership initiative for the rebuilding of the Tshwane municipal headquarters : City of Tshwane, South AfricaQomoyi, Nontando 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa boasts significant cumulative public-private partnership experience when compared to other African countries. However, little has been done to investigate the success and failure of implemented projects versus those registered on the National Treasury database. There is a limited amount of documented progress of public-private partnerships in South Africa, these being successes and failures in project implementation as well as the contributing factors for such outcomes, and these would serve as critical lessons for future partnerships.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the challenges faced in the implementation of municipal public-private partnerships, especially concerning the City of Tshwane’s accommodation public-private partnership. A case study approach was adopted, reviewing the City of Tshwane’s public-private partnership initiative by looking at some of the reported challenges faced as well as the process followed during the implementation of the project.
The results of this research assignment indicate that major strides have been made in acquiring sufficient experience and knowledge relating to public-private partnerships as they relate to the South African environment, and the main project team members, who have been involved long enough to understand the objectives of the project. However, of concern is the constant change of project team members taking into account that for each project phase a new team is established. The implication of this is that project knowledge may be lost due to changes in the structure of the project team. It should be noted that at the submission of this assignment the City of Tshwane accommodation public-private partnership was still in progress and in the initial stages of physical construction.
