Underwater Optical Properties of Lake Texoma (Oklahoma-Texas) Using Secchi Disk, Submarine Photometer, and High-Resolution Spectroscopy

The underwater optical climate of Lake Texoma was measured at eleven fixed stations from August 1996 to August 1997. Secchi transparency and submarine photometry characterized seasonal and spatial values of secchi depth (SD), vertical attenuation coefficient (η''), and depth of euphotic zone (Zeu). Indices of Zeu:SD and η'' × SD were compared with universally applied values derived from inland and coastal waters. Turbidity explained 76% of the variation (p = 0.0001) of η'' among water quality parameters, including chlorophyll-α. Using a spectroradiometer, spectral signatures of chlorophyll-α and turbidity were located. Stations with low turbidity exhibited a distinct green reflectance peak around 590-610 nanometers, indicating presence of chlorophyll-α. Stations with high turbidity exhibited a reflectance peak shift towards the red spectrum, making it difficult to detect the chlorophyll signature. Derivative analysis of the reflectance signal at 590-610, and 720-780 nanometers allowed discrimination of this chlorophyll signature from those of turbidity (0.66 ≤ r^2 ≤ 0.99).

Hematological Parameters of the Bluegill, Lepomis machrochirus (Rafinesque), Including Effects of Turbidity, Chloramines, and Flexibacter columnaris

Normal ranges of values for hematological parameters of bluegill gathered seasonally from three lakes were determined. Sexual, seasonal, and inter-lake variations were found. Effects of 2-wk exposure to turbidity on blood parameters included an increase in rbc size and a decrease in small lymphocytes. Effects of 3-hr exposure were increases in rbc count, hemoglobin, and pH and decreases in PG2 and large lymphocytes. The effects of 0.44 and 0.88 ppm chloramines were an increase in blood pH, a decrease in MEV, and severe spastic reactions resulting in loss of equilibrium or death in 90% of the fish. Effects of Flexibacter columnaris included an increase in transformed lymphocytes and a decrease in small lymphocytes.

Bien que les systèmes turbiditiques soient très étudiés à travers le monde, les éventails sous-marins volcanoclastiques sont relativement peu connus en comparaison avec les systèmes silicoclastiques. Les nombreuses études réalisées au large des îles d’Hawaii et des Canaries n’ont pas permis d’observer de systèmes turbiditiques bien développé. Des dépôts turbiditiques et des structures sédimentaires comme des canyons et des chenaux sont néanmoins visibles au large de ces îles, suggérant que des processus autres que les grands glissements (glissement de flancs ou avalanche de débris) jouent un rôle important dans les mécanismes d’érosion et de transport des sédiments dans le domaine marin. Les nouvelles données acquises au large de l’île de La Réunion au cours des campagnes FOREVER (2006), ERODER1 (2007) et ERODER 2 (2008) ont permis de mettre en évidence l’existence de cinq systèmes turbiditiques s’étendant à plus de 200 km de l’île. Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse proposent une reconstruction du fonctionnement sédimentaire récent (150 ka) du système turbiditique de Cilaos situé au sud-ouest de l’île. Un large jeu de données, comprenant bathymétrie, imagerie sonar et profils de sondeur de sédiment, a été utilisé afin de conduire une étude détaillée de la morphologie moderne du système turbiditique de Cilaos. L’architecture sédimentaire a été caractérisée grâce àl’étude de plusieurs carottes sédimentaires. Des mesures de granulométrie, ainsi que de fluorescence X ont été effectuées le long de chaque carotte, et une analyse des isotopes de l’oxygène et des dates radiocarbone ont été utilisées pour contraindre le cadre stratigraphique. La cartographie détaillée de la zone a permis d’identifier les éléments architecturaux du système. Celui-ci comprend une zone de canyons alimentant une vallée majeure. Au pied de la pente et sur la plaine abyssale, l’éventail se développe plus largement avec notamment la présence d’un champ de sediment waves, des accumulations sédimentaires de formes lobées et des petits chenaux. La morphologie de ce système et de ses corps sédimentaires est fortement influencée par la topographie de la plaque préexistante avec la présence de rides volcaniques qui compartimentent le système sédimentaire profond et par la nature des dépôts dominés par des sédiments sableux d’origine volcanique. Les structures morphologiques identifiées aux têtes des canyons suggèrent que l’alimentation actuelle du système turbiditique de Cilaos est dominée par des processus hydrodynamiques et sédimentaires liés aux crues de la rivière Saint-Étienne. Les courants hyperpycnaux ne sont pas l’unique processus d’alimentation. La dynamique des vagues et les instabilités de pente jouent également un rôle dans le déclenchement des courants de turbidité et participent à l’incision des canyons. L’analyse détaillée des faciès et séquences sédimentaires a permis de mettre en évidence un fonctionnement sédimentaire en liaison avec l’activité volcanique. Les principales périodes d’activité turbiditiques sont associées aux périodes d’interruption de l’activité volcanique qui permettent une augmentation de l’alimentation du bassin versant de la rivière Saint-Étienne. Les variations climatoeustatiques affectent également le système mais celles-ci sont de moindre importance. L’origine volcanique des sédiments et la morphologie complexe de la plaque océanique rendent le système de Cilaos unique, tant par son mode d’alimentation comparable à celui des systèmes turbiditiques silicoclastiques, que par la nature érosive et riche en sable de ses écoulements caractéristiques des turbidites volcanoclastiques. / Even if deep-water turbidite systems have been widely studied throughout the world ocean,volcaniclastic deep-sea fans are little known compared to silicoclastic systems. Numerous studies dedicated to the Canary or the Hawaii Islands have never revealed the presence of well-developed turbidite system (with canyons, lobes and levees). Nevertheless, turbidite deposits and sedimentary structures like canyons or channels are visible off these volcanic islands suggesting that other processes than large mass wasting processes (flank landslides, debris avalanches) also played an important role in the erosion and transport of sediments in the deep marine environment adjacent to volcanic islands. The new dataset collected off La Réunion Island, during the 2006 cruises FOREVER and ERODER1 and the 2008 ERODER 2, reveals for the first time the presence of five large turbidite systems extending to more than 200 km from the island. The results presented in this PhD thesis propose a reconstruction of the recent sedimentary evolution (last 150 ka) of the Cilaos turbidite system located southwest of the island. Multibeam bathymetry, backscatter imagery, and echosounder profiles have been used to characterise the morphology of the Cilaos turbidite system. The sedimentological variability has been characterised thanks to the study of several gravity cores. Grain-size measurements, and XRF logging have been performed along each core interval and analyses of planktonic oxygen isotopes and radiocarbon dating have been used to constrain the stratigraphic framework. A detail mapping of the system allows the identification of the architectural elements of the deep-sea fan. It is composed of a canyon area feeding a wide valley. At the foot of the slope and on the abyssal plain, a wide fan is developed with a sediment waves field, lobate bodies and an extended channelized system in the lower-fan. Its morphology appears to have been strongly influenced by the morphology of the submarine slopes of the volcanic edifice, the surrounding seafloor and the high content of volcanic sands in the turbidity currents. The morphological features identified at the canyon head suggest that the present-day feeding of the Cilaos turbidite system is dominated by the hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes linked to the Saint-Etienne River floods. The hyperpycnal flows are not the only processes feeding the Cilaos canyon. Wave dynamic and slope instabilities also play a role for the triggering of turbidity currents and participate to the incision of the canyons. The detailed analysis of sedimentary facies and bodies permits to highlight that volcanic activity is the main factor controlling the fan sedimentary supplies. The two main phases of the Cilaos turbidite activity are linked to periods with low volcanic activity which led to an increase of the feeding of the Saint-Etienne drainage basin. Climatic and eustatic variations have also influenced the fan but they are interpreted to be of lesser importance. The volcanic origin of sediments and the complex morphology of the oceanic plate make unique the Cilaos fan which feeding mode is rather similar to those observed in silicoclastic turbidite systems, but its erosive and sand rich turbidite currents are characteristics of volcaniclastic turbidites.

Characterization of Dredged Sediment Used in Coastal Restoration and Marsh Creation Projects

To minimize coastal land loss and create new land, dredged sediment has been in use in coastal Louisiana during the last several years. Engineering properties and material characteristics of dredged material are input parameters in several mathematical models used to predict the long-term hydrodynamic behavior of the coast. Therefore, proper characterization of the dredged material is of utmost importance in the correct design of coastal restoration and land creation projects. The sedimentation characteristics of the dredged material, among other factors, depends on the (a) grain size distribution of the dredged material, (b) salinity (fresh, brackish, or saltwater environment) of the composite slurry, and (c) concentration of the solid particles in the slurry. In this research, dredged sediments obtained from actual coastal restoration projects were characterized. Furthermore, the effects of grain size distribution, salinity and solid particle concentration on sedimentation characteristics have been evaluated.

Development of Novel Turbidity Calibration Standards and Methodologies Using Appropriate Technology

The measurement of turbidity is currently conducted using a variety of methodologies for different applications, primarily using calibration standards composed of formazin, a material which can be difficult to obtain, short-lived, and toxic. The discrepancies between the various measurement methods lead to unreliability in sharing meaningful data across applications, and the deficiencies of the primary calibration standard make it difficult to conduct measurements in appropriate-technology environments. This research focused on examining the current methodologies and synthesizing new materials to use as calibration standards. The selection criteria for these materials were such as to ensure longevity, stability in solution, and ease of creation. Results showed that dilutions of dissolved sodium chloride yielded parabolic regression curves of comparable accuracy to formazin, which could be used for device calibration. These standards can be easily and safely synthesized in appropriate-technology settings. The use of fluorescent materials as calibration standards was also investigated, and the implications of the characteristic curves of turbidity versus solute concentration are discussed.

Development of a Large Batch Bench-Scale Dissolved Air Flotation System for Drinking Water Treatability Tests

The dissolved air flotation (DAF) has been used in drinking water treatment for its excellent algae and natural organic matter (NOM) removal. DAF drinking water treatability test are often conducted in a DAF jar test apparatus. Although, DAF jar test studies showed that they were able to predict NOM removals at full-scale facilities well, they have not always been successful in predicting the turbidity removals. One possible reason of the DAF jar test inaccuracy results could be associated to the small jar diameter, which may create wall effects. Therefore, the first two objectives of this research are: a) to develop and test a new, larger diameter and larger volume batch bench-scale dissolved air flotation system (LB-DAF) to better simulate turbidity removals in drinking water applications; b) to confirm these results by comparing the LB-DAF and full-scale DAF turbidity removals for two other source waters. The raw water characteristics of the three plants were quite different and the testing was performed at different times of the year. The development/optimization of the LB-DAF evaluated the impact of different variables (i.e., mixing intensity, water depth/tank diameter ratio, impeller shape, saturator pressure and recycle ratio). The results showed that the LB-DAF predicted well the full-scale DAF turbidity removals at three water treatment plants, and these predictions were better than those of DAF jar tests. For the LB-DAF design and operational variables evaluated had a limited impact on the turbidity removals. The LB-DAF predicted well DAF full-scale turbidity removals regardless of water temperature. This is an indication of the robustness of the DAF system. Ballasted sedimentation (BS) is a compact coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation process combination that has become very popular because it is very compact and because it can handle large variations in raw water turbidity and NOM. The literature survey did not initially identify studies on the BS treatment of algal impacted waters, for which DAF is considered particularly suitable. Thus, the third main objective of this dissertation was to compare the efficiency of BS with that conventional gravity settling (CGS), and that of DAF for the treatment of an algal impacted water via jar tests. These comparisons were performed at the Belleville Water Treatment Plant using Bay of Quinte water, one of the most eutrophic zones of Lake Ontario. Unfortunately, a change of weather prior to the testing resulted in raw water samples with relatively low concentrations of algae and cyanobacteria. The testing showed that DAF and BS had very similar NOM, cyanobacteria/algae (chlorophyll a and phycocyanin) removals.; however, the BS required microsand addition, polymer addition and a slightly higher alum dose. Only for turbidity removal the DAF was somewhat superior. It is suggested that these comparison experiments be repeated with waters that are more impacted by algae and cyanobacteria.

Polyvinylalcohol-carbazate (PVAC) inhibits bacteria growth

Abstract Introduction This study evaluated the effect of the polymer polyvinylalcohol-carbazate (PVAC) on the bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. PVAC is a polymer with a carbazate moiety that neutralizes free aldehydes and has shown great promise in stabilizing erythrocytes during long term storage. It has also been shown to reduce intraperitoneal adhesions after trauma. For this study, two Gram positive and two Gram negative bacteria strains were used with PVAC to evaluate its effect. Materials and methods PVAC was obtained from the research team at Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala. The bacteria were obtained from Clinical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene, Academic Hospital, Uppsala. The methods used were spectrophotometric assessment of bacteria growth, use of FITC-conjugated PVAC to study adherence to bacteria, use of FITC-antibodies to study PVAC’s effect on bacterial adherence to erythrocytes and a qPCR for quantification of E. coli. Results and discussion PVAC displayed a clear effect of inhibition of bacteria growth in the study as shown by use of spectrophotometric assessment. Trials with FITC-PVAC showed that the polymer adheres directly to the bacteria, displaying a possible function of its inhibitory properties. The qPCR assay was able to detect the bacteria in all the dilutions used. Filtração lenta domiciliar como alternativa de tratamento de água em comunidades isoladas: eficiências com e sem controle de nível da água e aceleração do amadurecimento / Household slow sand filtration as a water treatment alternative in isolated communities: efficiencies with and without water level control and ripening acceleration

A falta de água potável é um agravo que atinge populações em nível mundial e nacional e as pequenas comunidades isoladas são as que estão mais suscetíveis à essa vulnerabilidade. Essas localidades demandam soluções descentralizadas, como o filtro lento domiciliar (FLD). Nesse contexto, nesta tese propõe-se a construção de FLD com materiais de PVC, de fácil aquisição e montagem simples. Na Fase 1 do trabalho, compararam-se FLDs com regime de fluxo intermitente, com (FI) e sem (FIS) controle do nível da água por boia; e contínuo, com (FC) e sem (FCS) boia, tratando mistura de água subterrânea com caulinita. Analisaram-se turbidez remanescente, redução de Escherichia coli, tempo de amadurecimento e duração das carreiras de filtração para investigar o efeito da boia nos dois regimes. Na Fase 2, estudou-se a aceleração do amadurecimento nos dois regimes, usando como acelerador o pó de cacto Opuntia cochenillifera, tratando água natural. Compararam-se unidades intermitentes com (FIA) e sem (FI) acelerador, e unidades contínuas com (FCA) e sem (FC) acelerador. Nessa fase consideraram-se também a redução de coliformes totais, consumo de oxigênio dissolvido e remoção de cistos de Giardia e oocistos de Cryptosporidium além das variáveis consideradas na Fase 1. Nas duas fases estudaram-se as correlações de variáveis operacionais (taxa de filtração, perda de carga dividida por espessura de meio filtrante, tempo de operação, tempo após a manutenção) com eficiências para redução de bactérias e turbidez remanescente. O custo dos FLDs em PVC foi estimado em cerca de R$ 420,00. Os resultados indicaram que na Fase 1, FI demonstrou maiores carreiras de filtração que FIS, sem diferenças para as outras variáveis. FC apresentou turbidez remanescente média menor que FCS (1,24 ± 0,91 versus 1,90 ± 1,36 NTU). Na Fase 2, FIA apresentou melhor eficiência para redução de E. coli (2,32 ± 0,79 versus 1,936 ± 0,61 log) e menor turbidez remanescente média que FI, entre os contínuos, não houve diferença de eficiências (p.e. 2,51 ± 0,60 e 2,60 ± 0,56 log de E. coli), no entanto, FCA apresentou carreiras de filtração mais curtas que FC (33 ± 13 versus 60 ± 14 dias). A variável perda de carga nos primeiros 2 cm foi a com maior correlação com a redução de bactérias na Fase 1, enquanto que na Fase 2, a redução de bactérias se correlacionou melhor com turbidez remanescente. No estudo sobre de remoção de (oo)cistos de protozoários, 92% de 30 amostras não apresentaram os parasitos, no entanto, em duas amostras detectaram-se a presença de um oocisto de Cryptosporidium. Apesar de elevadas reduções de bactérias por FLDs, não houve amostras filtradas com ausência de coliformes, para tanto, fizeram-se testes com hipoclorito de sódio, que resultaram ausência de bactérias na água tratada. O controle por boia prolongou a carreira de filtração no regime intermitente e melhorou a turbidez filtrada no fluxo contínuo. O uso do acelerador de amadurecimento foi efetivo para eficiências dos FLDs apenas no fluxo intermitente. Dentre os modelos estudados, o FC apresentou melhores resultados em termos de eficiência e duração das carreiras de filtração. / The lack of drinking water is an aggravation affecting populations at the global and national levels and the small and isolated communities are the most susceptible to this vulnerability. These locations require decentralized solutions, such as the household slow sand filter (HSSF). In this context, in the present thesis is proposed the construction of a HSSF with PVC materials, of easy acquisition and simple assemble. In Phase 1 of the study, it was compared HSSFs with intermittent flow regime, with (FI) and without (FIS) water level control by float; and continuous, with (FC) and without (FCS) float, treating groundwater with kaolinite. Remaining turbidity, Escherichia coli reduction, ripening time and filtration run times were investigated to explore the effect of the float in the two regimes. In Phase 2 the acceleration of ripening was studied in both regimes, using as accelerator Opuntia cochenillifera cactus powder, treating natural water. Intermittent units were compared with (FIA) and without (FI) accelerator, and continuous units with (FCA) and without (FC) accelerator. In this phase, the reduction of total coliforms, dissolved oxygen consumption and removal of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in addition to the variables considered in Phase 1 were also studied. In the two phases it was studied the correlation of operational variables (filtration rate, head loss divided by filter media thickness, time of operation, time after maintenance) with efficiencies for bacterial reduction and remaining turbidity. The cost of FLDs in PVC was estimated at around R$ 420.00. The results indicated that in Phase 1, FI had larger filtration runs than FIS, with no differences for the other variables. FC had turbidity remaining mean lower than FCS (1.24 ± 0.91 versus 1.90 ± 1.36 NTU). In Phase 2, FIA had a better efficiency to reduce E. coli (2.32 ± 0.79 versus 1.936 ± 0.61 log) and lower average remaining turbidity than FI, there were no differences in efficiencies (e.g. 2, 51 ± 0.60 and 2.60 ± 0.56 log of E. coli), however, FCA had shorter filtration runs than FC (33 ± 13 versus 60 ± 14 days). The variable head loss in the first 2 cm was the one with the highest correlation with E. coli reductions in Phase 1, while in Phase 2, the bacterial reduction correlated better with remaining turbidity. In the study on the removal of protozoa (oo)cysts, 92% of 30 samples did not present the parasites, however, in two samples the presence of a Cryptosporidium oocyst was detected. Despite high bacterial reductions by HSSFs, there were no filtered samples with absence of coliforms; therefore, sodium hypochlorite tests were performed, which resulted in no bacteria in the treated water. The float control extended the filtration run in the intermittent regime and improved the turbidity filtered in the continuous stream. The use of the ripening accelerator was effective for FLD efficiencies only in the intermittent flow. Between the studied models of filters, FC was the one with the better results of efficiencies and duration of filters run.

Neste projeto de pesquisa avaliou-se a etapa de filtração no processo de tratamento de água para abastecimento público. Para isto, foi utilizado um sistema de filtração piloto composto por quatro filtros rápidos por gravidade de camada profunda. Os filtros piloto foram alimentados com água decantada da Estação de Tratamento de Água Rio Grande, e operados com taxa de filtração de 500 m3/m2/dia. A concepção dos filtros variou em termos de material filtrante (areia e antracito), diâmetro dos grãos e altura do leito. Os filtros foram avaliados em termos de turbidez, contagem de partículas, evolução de perda de carga e velocidade ascensional de água de lavagem. Na Etapa 1, operando-se filtros de areia e antracito com diferentes diâmetros, o filtro de antracito com 1,3 mm de diâmetro e 120 cm de altura apresentou melhor comportamento no tocante aos parâmetros avaliados. Na etapa 2, comparando-se filtros de areia e de antracito com mesmo diâmetro (1,3 mm) e altura de leito (120 cm), mais uma vez o filtro de antracito foi superior. Acredita-se que os índices físicos justifiquem esse comportamento. Na Etapa 3, conclui-se que o aumento de altura de leito dos filtros de areia (1,3 mm) e antracito (1,3 mm) de 120 cm para 160 cm foi benéfico para ambos os materiais filtrantes em termos de qualidade do efluente, mas muito mais significativo para o antracito, e não se observou alteração de comportamento no tocante à evolução de perda de carga. Com o ensaio de fluidificação e expansão do leito filtrante, conclui-se que, considerando-se o mesmo tempo de duração da lavagem e a mesma expansão do leito, o filtro de antracito possibilitou a utilização de menor velocidade ascensional de água de lavagem, que representa grande economia com relação aos custos do sistema de lavagem. Assim, em todos os aspectos estudados, o uso de antracito (1,3 mm) como material filtrante para filtros rápidos por gravidade de camada profunda se mostrou mais vantajoso. / This project researched the filtration stage in the water treatment process for public use. The research used a pilot filtration system based on four rapid gravity depth bed filters, with a filtration rate of 500m3/m2/dia. The water used in the experiment came from sedimentation tank of the Rio Grande water treatment facility. During the experimental phase the filters were loaded with different depth, used different filter media (sand and anthracite) and used grain with different effective size. The filters were evaluated in terms of turbidity, particle count, head loss and superficial velocity of backwashing water. In the first part of the study, when analyzing the results of filters loaded to a depth of 120 cm using both sand and anthracite with different size, the anthracite filter with effective size of 1.3 mm was the one with the best results. In the second part of the study, when comparing anthracite and sand with same the effective size, the anthracite also presented better results. Finally when increasing the depth of the filter, both sand and anthracite filters showed improved performance in terms of effluent quality, but anthracite filters kept outperforming sand filters. In both case, there were no evidences of changing in the head loss development. When performing fluidization and expansion experiments, considering the same backwashing cycle time and expansion of filter media, the anthracite filter allowed lower superficial velocity which represents relevant economies in the washing system costs. Therefore the use of anthracite (1.3mm) as a filter medium for rapid gravity depth bed filters is recommended.
