A maioria dos estudos realizados sobre moonpools existentes em embarcações sempre objetivou a redução das amplitudes de oscilação da água interna a estes, pois sua usual utilização é a passagem de linhas de produção, equipamentos e mergulhadores. Estes estudos mostram que com a mudança da geometria interna do moonpool é possível alterar o comportamento de oscilação da água interna ao mesmo. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o acoplamento entre o movimento vertical da água interna ao moonpool e a dinâmica em heave do corpo flutuante. Os adimensionais que regem o problema são apontados. Através das observações e conclusões em relação aos estudos numéricos e ensaios experimentais realizados, é proposto um modelo massa-mola-amortecedor representando o acoplamento entre o movimento vertical da água interna ao moonpool e a dinâmica em heave do corpo flutuante. / Most published studies related to moonpool existent in vessels always had as it main objective the reduction of vertical oscillation of the water inside the moonpool, as its usual function is the passage of production lines, equipments and divers. These studies show that, through the change of the moonpool\'s internal geometry, it is possible to modify the behavior of vertical oscillation of the water inside the moonpool. The present work has the objective of studying coupling between the vertical movement of the water inside the moonpool and the heave dynamics of the floating-body. The nondimensional numbers that guide the problem are indicated. Through the observations and conclusions in relation to the numerical studies and experimental analysis made, it is proposed a mass-spring-dumper model representing the coupling between the vertical movement of the water inside the moonpool and the heave dynamics of the floating-body.

The dynamics of deployment and observation of a rigid body spacecraft system in the linear and non-linear two-body problem

Modern space situational awareness entails the detection, tracking, identification, and characterization of resident space objects. Characterization is typically accomplished through the use of ground and space based sensors that are able to identify some specific physical feature, monitor unique dynamical behaviors, or deduce some information about the material properties of the object. The present investigation considers the characterizaiton aspects of situational awareness from the perspective of a close-proximity formation reconnaissance mission. The present study explores both relative translational and relative rotational motion for deployment of a spacecraft and observation of a resident space object. This investigation is motivated by specific situations in which characterization with ground or fixed space based sensors is insufficient. Instead, one or more vehicles are deployed in the vicinity of the object of interest. These could be, for instance, nano-satellites with imaging sensors. Nano-satellites offer a low-cost and effective technological platform, which makes consideration of the proposed scenario more feasible. Although the motivating application is rooted in space situational awareness, the techniques explored are generally applicable to flight in the vicinity of asteroids, and both cooperative vs. non-cooperative resident space objects. The investigation is initially focused on identifying the key features of the relative dynamics that are relevant to space situational awareness applications. Subsequently, effective spacecraft control techniques are considered to achieve the reconnaissance goals. / text

O estudo se dá por meio da análise das órbitas de tal sistema. Para isso, é desenvolvido o problema gravitacional de dois corpos que trocam massa com a atmosfera que os involve. O problema de Gylden-Mestschersky é revisado para servir como referência para este problema. Alguns modelos de variação de massa são propostos, tendo como base uma analogia com a hidrodinâmica e a análise microscópica do sistema. O problema de dois corpos estudado é aplicado ao problema de três corpos de massas variáveis. São encontradas soluções estacionárias correspondentes às que estão presentes no problema usual de massas constantes / Abstract: We study the process of galactic merger, where galaxies are regarded as compact objects with time-dependent masses. This study is made through the analysis of the system's orbit. For this purpose, we consider the gravitational problem of two bodies exchanging mass with a surrounding atmosphere. The Gylden-Mestschersky problem is reviewed in order to be used as a reference for that problem. We propose some models of mass variation, based on a hydrodynamics analogy and on a microscopic analysis of the system. The two-body problem considered is applied to the three-boby problem of varying masses. However, the combination of the rocket equation with the two-body problem has not been studied to any degree of depth due to the intractability of the resulting non-linear, non-homogeneous equations. The goal is to use perturbation techniques to approximate solutions to the combined two-body and rocket equations.

Hydrodynamic Design Optimization and Wave Tank Testing of Self-Reacting Two-Body Wave Energy Converter

As worldwide energy consumption continues to increase, so does the demand for renewable energy sources. The total available wave energy resource for the United States alone is 2,640 TWh/yr; nearly two thirds of the 4,000 TWh of electricity used in the United States each year. It is estimated that nearly half of that available energy is recoverable through wave energy conversion techniques. In this thesis, a two-body 'point absorber' type wave energy converter with a mechanical power-takeoff is investigated. The two-body wave energy converter extracts energy through the relative motion of a floating buoy and a neutrally buoyant submerged body. Using a linear frequency-domain model, analytical solutions of the optimal power and the corresponding power-takeoff components are derived for the two-body wave energy converter. Using these solutions, a case study is conducted to investigate the influence of the submerged body size on the absorbed power of the device in regular and irregular waves. Here it is found that an optimal mass ratio between the submerged body and floating buoy exists where the device will achieve resonance. Furthermore, a case study to investigate the influence of the submerged body shape on the absorbed power is conducted using a time-domain numerical model. Here it is found that the submerged body should be designed to reduce the effects of drag, but to maintain relatively large hydrodynamic added mass and excitation force. To validate the analytical and numerical models, a 1/30th scale model of a two-body wave energy converter is tested in a wave tank. The results of the wave tank tests show that the two-body wave energy converter can absorb nearly twice the energy of a single-body 'point absorber' type wave energy converter. / Master of Science

Dynamics of the breakup of two-body halo nuclei

In this thesis, the first-order and higher-order interferences on the total (Coulomb+nuclear), Coulomb and nuclear breakup cross sections in the 15C+208Pb, 11Be+208Pb breakup reactions are first studied at 68 MeV/u incident energy. It is shown that the first-order interference reduces by more than 60% the total breakup cross sections, by less than 3% the Coulomb breakup cross sections and by more than 85% the nuclear breakup cross sections, for both reactions. On the other hand, the high-order interference is found to reduce by less than 9% the total breakup cross section, less than 1% the Coulomb breakup cross section and less than 7% the nuclear breakup cross section for the 15C+208Pb reaction. For the 11Be+208Pb reaction however, the high-order interference reduces by less than 7% the total breakup cross section, by less than 1% the Coulomb breakup cross section and by less than 4% the nuclear breakup cross section. It is finally shown that even at first-order, the incoherent sum of the nuclear breakup cross sections is more important than the incoherent sum of the Coulomb breakup cross sections for the two reactions. The role of the diagonal and off-diagonal continuum-continuum couplings on total, Coulomb and nuclear breakup cross sections is also investigated for the 8B+58Ni, 8B+208Pb and 19C+208Pb at 29.3, 170.3 MeV and 1273 MeV incident energies respectively. Qualitatively, we found that, the diagonal continuum-continuum couplings are responsible for the large reduction of the differential total and nuclear breakup cross sections at backward angles. At forward angles, this reduction is due to the off-diagonal continuum-continuum couplings. In the absence of these couplings, the nuclear breakup is the more dominant process, while when they are included, the Coulomb breakup becomes dominant. This shows that, the nuclear breakup is more affected by the continuum-continuum couplings than its Coulomb counterpart. Quantitatively, we found that, the off-diagonal countinuum-countinuum couplings reduce by 13.39%, 12.71% and 11.11% the total breakup cross sections for the 8B+58Ni, 8B+208Pb and 19C+208Pb reactions, respectively. / Physics / D. Effect of full-contour Y-TZP zirconia surface roughness on wear of glass-based ceramics

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The use of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP), normally employed as a framework for all-ceramic restorations, has now started to be used without any veneering ceramics in patients with parafunctional activities. The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of Y-TZP surface roughness on the wear behavior (volume/height loss) against glass-based ceramics (i.e., IPS Empress CAD and IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar-Vivadent). Thirty-two Y-TZP full-contour zirconia (Ardent®) sliders (ϕ=2 mm, 1.5 mm in height) were milled in a CAD/CAM unit and sintered according to the manufacturer instructions. Sliders were embedded in brass holders using acrylic resin and then randomly allocated into 2 groups according to the surface treatment (n=16): G1-as-machined and G2-glazed (Diazir®). Empress and e.max antagonists were cut into tabs (13×13×2 mm) wet-finished and also embedded in brass holders. Two-body pin-on-disc wear testing was performed at 1.2 Hz for 25,000 cycles under a 3-kg load. Non-contact profilometry was used to measure antagonist height (μm) and volume loss (mm3). Qualitative data of the testing surfaces and wear tracks were obtained using SEM. Statistics were performed using one- and two-way ANOVAs (α=0.05). The results indicated that G1 yielded significantly higher mean roughness values (Ra=0.83 μm, Rq=1.09 μm) than G2 (Ra=0.53 μm, Rq=0.78 μm). Regarding antagonist loss, G1 caused significantly less antagonist mean height and volume loss (68.4 μm, 7.6 mm3) for Empress than G2 (84.9 μm, 9.9 mm3) while no significant differences were found for e.max. Moreover, Empress significantly showed lower mean height and volume loss than e.max (p<0.0001). SEM data revealed morphological differences on wear characteristics between the two ceramics against Y-TZP. Within the limitations of this study, e.max wear was not affected by Y-TZP surface roughness. However, Empress wear was greater when opposing glazed Y-TZP. Overall, based on our findings, surface glazing on full-contour Y-TZP did not minimize glass-ceramic antagonist wear when compared with as-machined group.

The objectives of this in-vitro study were to investigate the effects of different polishing techniques on the surface roughness of Y-TZP (Ardent Dental, Inc.) and to investigate the effects of different polishing techniques on the wear behavior of synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) and bovine enamel. An in-vitro study was conducted by fabrication of 48 Y-TZP sliders (diameter = 2 mm × 1.5 mm in height) using CAD/CAM technique; then the samples were embedded in acrylic resin using brass holders. Samples were then randomly allocated into four groups according to the finishing/polishing procedure: G1-as-machined (n = 8), G2- glazed (n = 16), G3-diamond bur-finishing (Brasseler, USA) (n = 8) and G4- G3+OptraFine polishing kit (Ivoclar-Vivadent) (n = 16). Thirty-two sintered HA disks (diameter = 11 mm × 2.9 mm in height) and 16 bovine enamel samples with a minimum surface area of 64 mm2 were mounted in brass holders. Baseline surface roughness (Ra and Rq, in μm) were recorded using a non-contact profilometer (Proscan 2000) for all the samples. A two-body pin-on-disk wear test was performed for 25,000 cycles at 1.2 Hz in which the four zirconia groups were tested against HA, and only G2-glazed and G4- G3+OptraFine polishing kit (Ivoclar-Vivadent) were tested against bovine enamel. Vertical substance loss (μm) and volume loss (mm3) of HA were measured (Proscan). Zirconia height loss was measured using a digital micrometer. One-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. The results indicated that surface roughness measurements showed significant differences among the surface treatments with G1 (Ra = 0.84, Rq = 1.13 μm) and G3 (Ra = 0.89, Rq = 1.2 μm) being the roughest, and G2 (Ra = 0.42, Rq = 0.63 μm) the smoothest. The glazed group showed the highest vertical loss (35.39 μm) suggesting wear of the glaze layer, while the polished group showed the least vertical loss (6.61 μm). HA antagonist volume loss and vertical height loss for groups (G1, G2 and G3) were similar, while polished group (1.3 mm3, 14.7 μm) showed significant lower (p = 0.0001) values. Antagonist height loss and antagonist volume loss were significantly higher for bovine antagonist than for HA antagonist (197.6 μm/116.2 μm, and 28.5 mm3/17.7 mm3 for bovine against glazed/polished zirconia sliders, respectively) (p < 0.0001). From the results it can be concluded that glazed zirconia provided an initially smooth surface, but a significant increased antagonist wear compared with the polished surface was seen. Bovine enamel showed higher wear compared with HA, which suggested that more studies should be performed to validate the use of bovine enamel as a substitute for human enamel in wear studies.
