Participatory Ecological Storytelling - How to Convey Empathy for the Planet for Behavior Change

Talgorn, Elise 30 June 2022 (has links)
There is still too little urgency and emotional engagement around environmental issues. In organizations and companies, short-term economic imperatives and existing structures and processes hamper consideration and implementation of sustainable solutions. Making sustainability a priority requires – beyond practical enablement and innovation development – an emotional and mindset shift as well as more systemic awareness. The difficulty is that the risks and challenges around environmental issues are often abstract and unrelatable. In our research we investigate storytelling as a tool to create pro-environmental awareness and investigate its impact in terms of behaviour change.

Analyzing the impacts of built environment factors on vehicle-bicycle crashes in Dutch cities

Asadi, Mehrnaz, Ulak, M. Baran, Geurs, Karst T., Weijermars, Wendy, Schepers, Paul 03 January 2023 (has links)
Cycling safety policy and research have mostly focused on cycling infrastructure, cyclists' behavior, and safety equipment in the past decades. However, the role ofbuilt environment characteristics (BECs) in the safety of cyclists has not yet been fully examined. For the Netherlands, this is rather surprising given the significant modal share of bicycles in daily trips, the importance attributed to urban spatial planning, and it being one of the most planned countries in the world. Despite the considerable improvements that have ta1cen place in traffic safety over the decades, the ( actual) number of cyclist deaths between 2011 and 2020 increased by on average 2% per year; the cyclists bad a major portion oftraffic death (followed by passenger cars); also, almost onethird of traffic death happened in built-up a.reas (about 25% of fatalities occurred on 50km/h roads in urban areas) in this period. Considering the aim of construction of on average 75,000 new homes per year until 2025, as weil as promoting bicycle use in as a healthy and sustainable mode of transport in the N etherlands, underst.anding the relationships between the BECs and cycling safety is invaluable for improving the safety of cyclists.

Research on the status of chemical pesticide uses in agricultural activities in Phan Me commune, Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen province: Research article

Nguyen, Thi Hue, Ha, Dinh Nghiem 09 December 2015 (has links)
Phan Me is a midland-mountainous commune of Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam where the agricultural activities are predominant occupation. The investigation on the use of plant protection products in here showed that chemical pesticides have been commonly used in agricultural activities. Although some local people have a good attitude in using plant protection products, the status of using chemical pesticides that were not recommended (like Vofatox) has been quite popular due to the old cultivation customs. The local people have not applied any measures for wastewater treatment, or plant protection product package treatment. Besides, the use of plant protection products in higher concentration than recommendation for vegetables or crops caused the residues of toxics in agricultural products as well as in cultivation soil. The accumulation of toxic residues in the environment is a serious matter of concern because of their significant impact on the environment, agricultural ecosystem and human health.

Effectiveness and Uncertainties of Payments for Watershed Services

Santos de Lima, Letícia 30 January 2018 (has links)
Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) have become the flagship of conservation organizations in recent years. The idea of securing ecosystem service (ES) provision through PES has been present in practical discourses of intermediaries directed at potential payers. However, demonstrating that PES can actually achieve the intended goals has been difficult for practitioners. Researchers have pointed out that many PES schemes, particularly water-related ones, are based on unreliable assumptions and lack strong causal links between land use interventions and ecosystem services. This uncertainty in PES schemes arises not only from practical difficulties, but from the complexity of human-environment systems (HES), and the limits of knowledge about them. Researchers have been able to describe and discuss these major challenges. However, the literature is still poor on empirical studies exploring the additionality of PES schemes, that is, if those schemes produce additional effects not attributable to other factors, as well as studies exploring the importance of impact evidence for stakeholders involved. This dissertation contributes to filling this empirical gap by exploring four water-related payments schemes (here also called payments for watershed services, PWS) in Colombia, comparing the cases in terms of their efforts to produce impact evidence through monitoring and evaluation, and their associated challenges. Three cases from Brazil are also included in one of the chapters and compared with the Colombian cases by illustrating differences and similarities.
