A Study of the Relationship between Unemployment in Indiana and the United States

Bell, Jack W. 01 February 1972 (has links)
Each state or region within the United States has certain unique and distinct characteristics that cause its economic performance to vary from that of the nation as a whole. Unemployment rates, as summary measures of unutilized manpower resources, frequently serve as a gauge of the general economic situation and social well-being. It is a well documented fact that unemployment is not evenly distributed througout the nation. For example, although 54% of the labor force is concetrated in the northeast and north central regions, they only account for 46% of the unemployment in recent years. This thesis focuses on the measurement and behavior of unemployed in Indiana, with particular attention devoted to contrasting performance by the State's economy with that of the nation as a whole.

Legally blind people’s experiences of stigma in the context of the labour market: Stories of adaptation and resistance

Jansenberger, Martha 25 August 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the labour market experiences of a purposive sample of legally blind people in a medium-sized Canadian city. Relevant literature on disability, employment and stigma is reviewed, providing context for the thesis. Thematic analysis of qualitative data gathered from 18 in-depth face-to-face interviews of legally blind working-age participants provide rich narratives of their experiences in the labour market and society at large. The participants’ current and past employment situations are described and barriers to acceptance of their disability in the workforce are identified. Findings suggest that while perceived, enacted, and felt stigma constitute significant barriers to meaningful employment for the participants, many employ effective strategies to adapt to or resist stigmatizing treatment by others. Policy suggestions are provided to mitigate the impact of stigma on the lives of legally blind Canadians. The thesis concludes with suggestions for future directions of research in the area. / Graduate / 0629 / 0630 / 0626 / martha.jansenberger@gmail.com

Three Essays on Labor Market Outcomes

Prakash, Anila January 2015 (has links)
The three chapters in this dissertation look at different aspects of the labor market and its players. The first chapter estimates the impact of using the internet for job search on job match quality. Using both the semi-parametric Meyer (1990) model and the non-parametric Hausman Woutersen (2014) hazard model, the paper finds that exit rate from employment is at least 28% lower when internet is used as a job search tool. The second chapter looks at the effect of past unemployment on future wages. It is believed that employers may use past unemployment as a signal of low productivity. In this situation workers with a history of unemployment may receive lower wages. The paper uses the Machado Mata (2005) quantile decomposition technique to decompose the wage difference into differences due to characteristics and differences due to rewards. Results indicate that workers with an unemployment spell of more than three months receive at least 12% lower wages and that more than 40% of this wage difference can be attributed to the lower rewards received by the previously unemployed.. The last chapter focuses on human capital formation and looks at some of the reasons behind the low levels of schooling India. Using the Indian Household Development Survey (2005), the paper finds that income continues to be an important factor behind the low level of primary school enrollment. On average, poor students have at least 3% lower enrollment rates, when compared to similar skilled non-poor students.

Assmund, Therese, Andersson, Catrin January 2009 (has links)
Key words: length of unemployment, hope, intrinsic motivation

Idag student, imorgon arbetslös? : Högskolestudenters oro inför eventuell arbetslöshet efter studier

Nilsson, Louise, Granberg, Charlotta January 2009 (has links)

Bedarbystės sąsaja su sveikata ir sveikatos priežiūros prieinamumu / Associations of unemployment with health and health care accessibility

Stankūnas, Mindaugas 25 January 2007 (has links)
HEALTH 21, a document of the World Health Organization, stresses the importance of tackling social inequalities in health (WHO Regional Office for Europe, 1999). This issue is especially important in countries that are undergoing rapid social, economic and political reforms. The present socio-economic situation in Lithuania calls for the start of research regarding unemployment and its impact on the health status of this society. The aim of this study is to evaluate the associations of unemployment with health and health care accessibility. This was a cross-sectional study. Questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected unemployed persons who attended the Kaunas Labour Market Office in 2005. The questionnaires were distributed to selected respondents during these meetings. The total number of returned questionnaires was 429 (a response rate of 53.6%). This study adds to the growing evidence of associations between unemployment and poor health. Results indicate that health problems are more prevalent among the long-term unemployed. The long-term compared to the short-term unemployed were more likely to perceive their health negatively, feel shame and loneliness, have poor relations with their family members, be more depressive and have a lower sense of coherence.

Schyberg, Johanna, Rohde, Veronica January 2013 (has links)

UNEMPLOYMENT, TARP, AND THE SUBPRIME MORTGAGE CRISIS

Maliha, Nicole 04 April 2012 (has links)
Following the fall of the Lehman Brothers in 2008, the U.S. saw the worst recession since the Great Depression in the 1920's. This dissertation presents a summary of two previous major U.S. recessions, the Great Depression and the Savings and Loans Crisis, and an analysis of the root causes and consequences of the 2007-2009 recession is also provided, namely the bursting of the housing bubble, loose monetary policy, lax financial regulation, and misperception of risk. The Troubled Asset Relief Program, a bailout program implemented following the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act in October 2008, is then discussed. Using county-level panel data, the effect of the implementation of TARP on unemployment patterns is then studied. The results show that TARP negatively affected unemployment patterns, so that TARP alleviated the sharp rise in unemployment after its inception
