The Investigation on Creativity Related Factors of Urban Indigenous StudentsWang, Hsin-hui 12 August 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore th relationship between urban indigenous students¡¦ creativity and their growing environments. One hundred and two junior high school students, 52 senior high school students, and 126 vocational high
school students were selected by convenience sampling. The participants complete the ¡§Creativity Environment Scale¡¨ and ¡§Torrance Creativity Thinking Test¡¨. Descriptive statistics, t tests, and analysis of variance were conducted on the quantitative data. In addition, 4 targeted students with the high creativity scores were tested for performance assessment and were interviewed after the survey. The main findings in this study were as follows:
1. Urban indigenous students in junior and senior high school has significantly higher scores in creativity than urban indigenous students in vocational high school.
2. Urban indigenous girl students has significantly higher scores in creativity than urban indigenous boy students.
3. Urban indigenous students of junior high school reported that their ¡§family provided creativity opportunities¡¨ score was significantly higher than senior and vocational high school indigenous students.
4. Urban indigenous girl students¡¦ scores of ¡§emotion support in family¡¨, ¡§emotion exchange in school¡¨ and ¡§encourages exchange in school¡¨ were significantly higher than boys¡¦.
5. The urban indigenous students whose parents has high education level scored higher in the category of ¡¥¡¦family provided opportunity¡¦¡¦ than students whose
parents were less educated.
6. Urban indigenous students whose teacher were non-indigenous has higher scores in ¡§school provided opportunity¡¨ than urban indigenous students with indigenous teachers.
7. Urban indigenous students has significantly higher scores in ¡§fluency¡¨,¡§originality¡¨, and ¡§elaboration¡¨ than non-indigenous students, while non-indigenous students has significantly higher scores in ¡§verbal¡¨ than urban indigenous students.
8. After interviewing and performance assessment, it was found that there was significant relationship between their early childhood upbringing environment and creativity.
9. The urban indigenous students from better family and school environment has significantly higher scores in creativity than those from less fortunate
environment. .
The findings and suggestions from this research may be used for future researches on urban indigenous students.

“It’s something that runs through your blood”: urban indigenous identity-making and the Victoria Native Friendship CentreNeale, Katharine 30 August 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the processes of urban Indigenous identity-making at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC), and within Greater Victoria, B.C. more broadly. The diverse experiences of VNFC staff and community members are explored in relation to colonial narratives that fix Indigenous identities to ‘traditional’ ancestral spaces (Wilson and Peters 2005). This project contributes to the newly-emerging bodies of anthropological literature that focus on urban Indigenous identity construction and place-making. I carried out 8 semi-structured interviews with 11 Indigenous women (both VNFC staff and community members over the age of 18) and conducted informal participant observation at various locations around the Centre. Representing a range of different backgrounds and life histories, the women brought to light shared experiences of resistance, relationship-building, and finding balance that permeate identity-making at the Friendship Centre and in Greater Victoria. In addition to challenging discourses that assume “Indigenous people simply cannot be Indigenous in the city” (Watson 2010, 269), discussions with these women also highlight the resilience and adaptability of Indigenous identity-making that transcend spatial boundaries. / Graduate / 2017-08-19 / 0326 / 0740 / kneale26@uvic.ca

Making History Heal: Settler-colonialism and Urban Indigenous Healing in Ontario, 1970s-2010Maxwell, Krista 31 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the interrelationship between Canadian colonial histories and Indigenous healing. I begin by problematising how colonialism is invoked in contemporary scholarship on Aboriginal health and healing, and arguing for more precise historical methods and a more relational understanding of colonial processes. Historicising Indigenous agency is integral to this analysis. Whilst colonial continuities in contemporary Canadian public policy discourse is an important theme, I also attend to social movements, institutions, professions, and political and economic forces beyond the state.
Indigenous healing as a socio-political movement itself has a history dating at least to the late 1960s. Urban Indigenous healing discourse is characterised by linking present-day suffering to collective historical losses, and valorizing the reclamation of Indigenous identity, knowledge and social relations. Drawing on urban Indigenous social histories from Kenora and Toronto, I consider the urban healing movement as an example of Indigenous resistance influenced by the international decolonization and North American Red Power movements, but which over time has also engaged with dominant institutions, professions, policies, and discourses, such as the concept of trauma. My analysis considers professionals and patients invoking historical trauma as political agents, both responding to and participating in broader shifts in the moral economy. These shifts have created the conditions of possibility for public victimhood to become a viable strategy for attracting attention and resources to suffering and injustice.
The thesis highlights the centrality and complexity of self-determination in urban Indigenous healing, drawing on historical and ethnographic analysis from three southern Ontario cities. I analyse how the liberal multiculturalism paradigm dominant in health policy and health care settings contributes to mental health professionals’ failure to recognise Aboriginal clients and issues. I argue that characterising pan-Aboriginal and ethno-national healing as approaches in opposition to one another produces an insufficiently nuanced analysis in the context of urban Indigenous subjectivities and social relations, where both approaches are valuable for different reasons. The thesis urges greater attention to the role of languages and local histories, and to the threat which dominant policy discourses on residential schools and mental health pose to the maintenance of distinct ethno-national histories, epistemologies and traditions in urban Indigenous healing.

Beyond "Business as Usual": Using Counterstorytelling to Engage the Complexity of Urban Indigenous EducationSabzalian, Leilani 23 February 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines the discursive and material terrain of urban Indigenous education in a public school district and Title VII/Indian Education program. Based in tenets of Tribal Critical Race Theory and utilizing counterstorytelling techniques from Critical Race Theory informed by contemporary Indigenous philosophy and methodological theory, this research takes as its focus the often-unacknowledged ways settler colonial discourses continue to operate in public schools. Drawing on two years of fieldwork in a public school district, this dissertation documents and makes explicit racial and colonial dynamics that manifest in educational policy and practice through a series of counterstories. The counterstories survey a range of educational issues, including the implementation of Native-themed curriculum, teachers’ attempts to support Native students in their classrooms, challenges to an administrator’s “no adornment” policies for graduation, Native families’ negotiations of erasures embedded in practice and policy, and a Title VII program’s efforts to claim physical and cultural space in the district, among other issues. As a collective, these stories highlight the ways that colonization and settler society discourses continue to shape Native students’ experiences in schools. Further, by documenting the nuanced intelligence, courage, artfulness, and what Gerald Vizenor has termed the “survivance” of Native students, families, and educators as they attempt to access education, the research provides a corrective to deficit framings of Indigenous students. Beyond building empathy and compassion for Native students and communities, the purpose is to identify both the content and nature of the competencies teachers, administrators, and policy makers might need in order to provide educational services that promote Indigenous students’ success and well-being in school and foster educational self-determination. This research challenges educators to critically interrogate taken-for-granted assumptions about Native identity, culture, and education and invites educators to examine their own contexts for knowledge, insights, and resources to better support Native students in urban public schools and intervene into discourses that constrain their educational experiences.

Decolonizing bodies: a First Nations perspective on the determinants of urban indigenous health and wellness in CanadaQuinless, Jacqueline 27 April 2017 (has links)
Through a research partnership with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and using mixed methods participatory action research this Dissertation critically engages with dominant Western-based knowledge systems of well-being from a decolonizing standpoint to better understand the determinants of Indigenous health and well-being. This study specifically asks: what are the main factors effecting different dimensions of well-being for Indigenous peoples living in urban centres, how does engaging in traditional land-based activities and cultural ways of life affect well-being, and to what extent does intergenerational trauma impact well-being? Thirteen key informant interviews were conducted with FNHA members involved in the development of the First Nations Perspective on Health and Wellness (FNPOW) to garner knowledge about the thoughts, feelings, belief systems, values, and knowledge frameworks that are embedded in this perspective. A multi-level statistical model was developed informed by the First Nations Perspective on Health and Wellness, the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey and 2011 National Household Survey, to produce health and wellness outcomes. Using a strength-based approach to well-being this study shows that the FNPOW advocates self-determination, and implementing the perspective in research work offers a pathway to generating measures of health and wellness rooted in Traditional knowledge systems, and a pathway to decolonizing bodies. These outcomes are a form of social capital reflective of Indigenous values that can be utilized as a resource to strengthen community capacity to support Indigenous self-determination. / Graduate

Mending Identity: The Revitalization Process of the Muisca of SubaSanchez Castaneda, Paola A 26 March 2018 (has links)
For over five centuries, the Muiscas have faced direct colonial aggression against their traditional belief systems and sacred practices that have been historically demonized and driven to the brink of extinction. Despite such circumstances, however, the Muisca community has thrived to the present day, and since the turn of the twentieth century has begun to undergo a process of re-identification as an indigenous community in an attempt to revitalize their ethnic identity and practices. These efforts of re-indigenization have challenged their historically coerced identities, actively engaging in returning to traditional practices and beliefs, demand cultural and spiritual liberties, and regain their proper rights to sacred lands, which have also been devastated for centuries. Based on an ethnographic study conducted in Colombia, this thesis examines how rituals in sacred places are of central importance to this community within the re-indigenization process that is currently underway in the Muisca community.

“Day by day: coming of age is a process that takes time”: supporting culturally appropriate coming of age resources for urban Indigenous youth in care on Vancouver IslandMellor, Andrea Faith Pauline 16 July 2021 (has links)
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s first call to action is to reduce the number
of Indigenous children and youth in care, including keeping young people in culturally
appropriate environments. While we work towards this goal, culturally appropriate
resources are needed to support children and youth as evidence shows that when
Indigenous youth have access to cultural teachings, they have improved physical, mental,
emotional, and spiritual health outcomes.
Our project focused on the protective qualities of Indigenous coming of age teachings.
Together with our community partner Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services,
we worked to develop resources that inform and advocate for a culturally-centered
coming of age for urban Indigenous youth living in foster care in Victoria, British
Columbia on Lekwungen Territory. This dissertation begins with a literature review to
provide the social and historical context surrounding urban Indigenous youth-in-care’s
access to coming of age teachings. This is followed by a description of the Indigenous
research paradigm that guided our work, what it meant for us to do this project in a good
way, and the methods that we used to develop three visual storytelling knowledge sharing
tools. Three manuscripts are presented, two published and one submitted, that reflect a
strength-based vision of coming of age shared by knowledge holders who participated in
our community events.
The first manuscript retells the events of the knowledge holder’s dinner, where
community members shared their perspectives on four questions related to community
engagement and youth support. An analysis of the event’s transcripts revealed key themes including the responsibility of creating safe-spaces for youth, that coming of
age is a community effort, and the importance of youth self-determining their journey. A
graphic recording and short story are used to illustrate and narrate the relationship
between key themes and related signifiers. This manuscript highlights the willingness of
the community to collectively support youth in their journeys to adulthood.
The second manuscript focuses on our two youth workshops that had the objective of
understanding what rites of passage youth in SCCFS’s care engage with and how they
learn what cultural teachings were most important to them. The findings suggest that
when youth experience environments of belonging, and know they are ‘part of something
bigger’, qualities like self-determination, self-awareness, and empowerment are
strengthened.
The third manuscript focuses on how we translated our project findings into different
storytelling modalities using an Indigenist arts-based methodological approach. The
project findings provided the inspiration and content for a fictional story called Becoming
Wolf, which was adapted into a graphic novel, and a watercolour infographic. These
knowledge sharing media present our project findings in accessible and meaningful ways
that maintain the context and essences of our learnings.
This research illustrates how Indigenous coming of age is an experience of
interdependent teachings, events, and milestones, that contribute to the wellness of the
body, mind, heart, and spirit of youth and the Indigenous community more broadly.
Through our efforts, we hope to create a shared awareness about the cultural supports
available to urban Indigenous youth that can contribute to lifelong wellness. / Graduate
