Mapping Mueller : a post occupancy evaluation of transportation choices in a new urbanist community in Austin, Texas

Tepper, Rachel Cathryn 09 July 2014 (has links)
The 711-acre Mueller development is located just three miles northeast of downtown on the former site of the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. Planned as one of Austin’s major transit-oriented New Urbanist developments, Mueller contains a pattern of pedestrian and bike friendly streets to encourage a range of transportation options for residents and visitors. Mueller is 30% complete and provides housing and jobs to over 3000 residents and 3000 employees. This MDS seeks to understand how current residents, employees, and visitors use the bike lanes, sidewalks, and roads in the Mueller community. To evaluate the transportation infrastructure, the author designed and coded a custom Google Maps survey that asked residents to draw common routes, points of interest, and points of concern related to their transportation choices. The results of this study then influenced a future urban design of the undeveloped portion of Mueller. / text

A change in perspective: new priorities for neighborhood design in Johnson County, Kansas

Vogel, David L. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Timothy D. Keane / The fundamental purpose of this project, a suburban infill endeavor in southern Overland Park, Kansas, is to create connections on a number of levels and scales through the implementation of traditional neighborhood design principles within the context of the natural and man-made conditions affecting the site. Beginning at the smallest scale, the project examines what kinds of conditions are best suited for connecting people to one another within the site itself in terms of circulation networks, outdoor public spaces, civic uses, and the relationships of buildings and blocks. On a larger scale, the project explores methods for creating connections between the site and the wider community, both locally and regionally, through the integration of trail systems, land uses, and road networks. It also examines the principles for designing a mixed-use component intended to draw people from a wide geographic area and to serve as a center of activity for residents and visitors alike because of its distinctive qualities. Finally, the project examines principles for creating connections between people and the natural environment through the preservation of existing stream corridors, drainage channels, and woodlands and the restoration of the prairie systems that once characterized the land. Instead of sitting in isolation and addressing only the needs of its own residents while turning its back on adjacent land uses and the wider community, the project utilizes a design that directly engages that community through the full integration of its program elements. Traditional neighborhood design principles are therefore best applied not as a formula but rather as a flexible framework for the design components that define the form of the project. Ultimately the project seeks to achieve its goals and objectives not by simply replicating previous efforts but by developing and applying its own creative design solutions.

To guarantee the professional exercise on the working field and at the same time to establish minimun contents that could guarantee the training of the professional, it has been presents subjects on professors and architects discussions since the deployment of the first courses of architecture in Brazil. Facing all of the changes in the professional exercise, and especially the teaching of architecture, it is worth asking: how does it configure today the formation of the architect and urbanist? What is the result of this formation? What kind of professional are we molding? In fact do we mold a generalist professional, with a single license? To achieve this investigative goal has been analysed the finals graduation works of the Course of Architecture and Urbanism awarded on the National Competition of Final Graduation Work Opera Prima, from 1989 to 2011, taken as primary resource of this research. The Opera Prima competition was created in 1988 through a partnership between the (Assossiação Brasileira de Ensino de Arquitetura) Brazilian Assossiation of Architecture Teaching, the ABEA, the magazine Projeto and the sponsorship from FADEMAC. The documental analysis was the methodological procedure adopted for the implementation of the research that has as purpose to analyse the finals graduation work of the course of Architecture and Urbanism. The final graduation work is an academic work widely used in higher education as a way to assess the graduating students of the course. The purpose is to always observe, in the evaluation of Final Work, the diversity of the training aspects of the architect and urbanist.

Desenho de um comportamento profissional: o Código de ética e disciplina do arquiteto e urbanista no Brasil / Design of a professional behavior: the Code of ethics and discipline of the architect and urban designer in Brazil.

Perez, Ana Luisa Dantas Coutinho 10 May 2018 (has links)
With the establishment of the Architecture and Urban Design Council of Brazil (CAU/BR), by the end of 2011, the professional category of architects and urban designers attained the formation of its regulatory entity, exclusively dedicated to its professionals. Therefore, the need to formulate and implement a new Code of Ethics and Discipline for the profession, along with its disciplinary procedures became evident. With that in mind, the thesis aimed, in the first place, to follow and record the elaboration process of the Code, explaining its methodology and highlighting the main discussions that took place to achieve the consolidation of its final draft, with the first Code of Ethics dedicated solely to the field of Architecture and Urban Design in Brazil. The research made possible the survey of the main topics regarding the Code contents structure, and also, discussions that encompassed the predominant conflicts that occurred within the professional practice of Architecture and Urban Design at that time. Subsequently, the thesis focuses on the demonstration of the survey and classification of the decisions published by CAU/UF1, from the southeast region, concerning the applied sanctions regarding infractions committed against the Code after its implementation in the beginning of 2014, until the end of 2017, seeking to highlight the more recurrent ones. With the intention to provide a description of the historical process of the development of the profession of Architect and Urban Designer in Brazil, focused on the evolution of its professional behavior, based on the Conduct Codes established by the regulatory entities, the next step was the elaboration of a comparative study of the obtained results during the investigations mentioned above, containing the data of a previous research, conducted in a period in which the professional category was still under the regulation of the past Code of Ethics, under the CONFEA/CREA System.

Community Participation And Travel Choice: An Analysis Of Central Florida New Urban And Conventional Suburban Residents

Mikovsky, Laura P 01 January 2012 (has links)
Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the built environment and social and transportation outcomes when comparing traditional and conventional suburban neighborhoods, but much remains to be learned about whether New Urbanism can produce similar results. Among studies where new urban neighborhoods have been assessed, most have centered on regions with highly-utilized public transit systems and with climates that are amenable to utilitarian physical activity. This research sought to build on the existing research base through direct comparison of new urban and conventional suburban neighborhoods in central Florida, a region with an under-developed transit system and a climate that renders utilitarian physical activity impractical. Further, this research sought to lend greater insights into neighborhood selection factors across neighborhood types. A mixed-methods, single-case design was utilized to evaluate one new urban and one conventional suburban neighborhood in the central Florida region. Regional new urban neighborhoods were subjectively rated for adherence to tenets of the Charter of the New Urbanism, with the neighborhood (Celebration, in Osceola County, FL) found to most closely adhere to these tenets selected as the experimental group for the study. A socio-demographically comparable conventional suburban neighborhood (Sweetwater, in Seminole County, FL) was selected as the control group. Quantitative methods consisted of a household survey issued to 250 randomly- and convenience-sampled addresses in each neighborhood, followed by regression analysis to evaluate study hypotheses. Qualitative methods employed analysis of open-ended survey responses, detailed case studies of selected neighborhoods, and resident interviews. The household survey yielded net response rates of 15.79 percent and 25.50 percent iv for experimental and control neighborhoods, respectively, and a mean cross-neighborhood response rate of 20.64 percent. Twenty resident interviews (10 per neighborhood) were conducted. Quantitative and qualitative findings were compared to collectively address research questions. Regression results indicated no statistically significant difference between neighborhoods in attitudinal and behavioral components of community participation, in vehicle miles driven per week, or utilitarian physical activity frequency. However, results indicated that new urban residents had more positive attitudes toward utilitarian physical activity than conventional suburban residents and that attitudes toward community participation and utilitarian physical activity were positively correlated with associated behaviors. Qualitative findings provided substantial individual- and environmental-level insights to factors impacting evaluated attitudes and behaviors, and supported some quantitative findings while not aligning with others. Neighborhood selection factors were found to be quite different across neighborhoods: Celebration residents identified neighborhood social atmosphere and connection to the Walt Disney Company brand as top contributors to their selection decision, while Sweetwater residents expressed that access to quality schools was the most important factor in their selection decision. Qualitative findings indicated that car culture and climate within the central Florida region diminished both attitudinal and behavioral components of utilitarian physical activity across neighborhood types. This research expanded the understanding of the social and transportation outcomes of New Urbanism, particularly with respect to the central Florida region. While case and quantitative limitations may have impeded the ability of this study to draw decisive conclusions v about research questions, distinctive themes regarding social and transportation outcomes were identified. Findings of this research supported those of some prior studies while contradicting others, indicating that further exploration is needed to establish a firm understanding of the capabilities of new urban development to achieve desired outcomes, and of regional characteristics that may influence these outcomes.
