Among the possibilities of searching a metapsycological unterstanding, Freud thinks about a more primitive and radical mechanism than the repression, which could work decisively to cause psychosis. Considering an hallucinatory incident that was lived by Ergei Pankejeff, The Wolves Man, Freud calls this mechanism as rejection (Verwerfung). Without a systematic continuity of the research on psychosis, new heirs to the Master developed new ideas not only about psychosis but also about its psycological operation. That s what happened to the psychiatries Wilfred R. Bion and Jacques Lacan. Even if they are from different schools of thought and have different traditions, both consider the diversity of the psychotic categories (Bion with schizophrenia and Lacan with paranoia) to develop their systems of the psychoanalytic thought abou the theme. The originality and the diversity of their ideas make the authors have particular view points about the psychic mechanisms of psychosis; by the way, even withou a dialogue between them, some of their propositions can be considered very similar. The objective of this study is to consider mainly the concept of the defense mechanism called rejection (Verwerfung) e its connections between Wilfred Bion s and Jacques Lacan s thoughts abou their role on the constitution of the psychic system / A psicose sempre foi, aos olhos de Freud, um fenômeno cuja peculiaridade dos sintomas era certamente proporcional à radicalidade dos mecanimos de defesa nele envolvidos.

No. of bitstreams: 1 ViniciosBraga.pdf: 576032 bytes, checksum: 7f9a13e195f5e162977f6c1afb1bfde5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-07-27 / Every day we witness scenes of violence, intolerance and conflicts in different ways and intensities, whether on television, in the neighborhood or even inside our homes. Contemporary authors of Psychoanalysis has written about paranoid frames that can manifest even when there is no psychosis. Such frames are related to aggression that we see expressed in various ways. So, our main objective of this work show how you can be a paranoid framework in the absence of psychosis. To do so, we open the job discussing the notion of unconscious structured as a language, situating the field in which we are working and that the subject treated in the course of our exposition. Then, we used a presentation Verwerfung phenomenon to show that, although it is a mechanism usually linked to psychotic structure, is the base of own symbolic order of any speaker. We also demonstrated how the creation of an Ego is properly paranoid to have a rivalitary base that brings into play an aggressiveness (not always) latent, so that we could learn how it leaves marks that can lead a man to present typically paranoid traits, even if can not find a psychosis. This aggression is inherent in the human psyche and constitutes the extent that our Ego - imaginary function - is founded on such a basis where we first know ourselves into the other. Finally, we discuss about what is the paranoia and how manifest paranoid phenomena in order to contribute to a hearing in the clinic in addition to the closure of paranoid runs only in the field of psychosis. We were able to confirm that imaginary phenomena can not be taken alone as a criterion for the structure, and, therefore, we find situations in which paranoid manifestations occur even in the absence of psychosis. As a working method, we conducted literature search, which resorted to reading and rereading of Freud and Lacan, as well as authors who deal with the issue pertaining to the transmission line of these. With this, we aim to raise the concepts in question by promoting a dialogue between them to develop the question presented. The accuracy of the method in psychoanalysis is not in the accumulation of data, but to submit to the laws of language, in order not to us bogged in definitions closed in advance and be able to pay attention to the development of ideas as presented by the authors, as well as the progress the subject who writes.

O discurso do capitalista e a cultura do mal-estar / The discourse of the capitalista and the culture of malaise

Flávio Corrêa Pinto Bastos 30 September 2010 (has links)
This dissertation aims to address the vicissitudes of the discourse of the capitalist on the subject. For this purpose, it takes as a starting point Lacan statement in his lectures at Saint-Anne on The psychoanalysts knowledge, that what characterizes the discourse of the capitalist is the foreclosure of castration. From this statement - represented in the matheme of the discourse of the capitalist by the disappearance of the disjunction between product and truth, and by the absence of a vector between the agent and the Other, which shows that this discourse does not promote social bond - it traverses some issues that reverberate on the subject, among which stands out: if the subject does not exist apart from the social bond, what sort of effects does he suffer by following a discourse - which appears to be dominant in contemporary society - in which castration is foreclosed and, therefore, also the social bond? Since the Verwerfung is what functions in the discourse of the capitalist, there is the hypothesis that schizophrenizing at the level of the discourse could spread what Helene Deutsch conventionally called as if (als ob). This phenomenon emerges as an imaginary supplementation used by the subject to reach stabilization in view of the effects of castration foreclosure in the discourse of the capitalist. This is a psychosis-inducing discourse that, unlike the four discourses introduced by Lacan at the seminar Psychoanalysis Upside-Down, promotes no social bonding. If the discourse is what promotes social bond and Freud in 1930, announced that the main reason why men suffer is due to the relationship with others, the malaise in civilization is the malaise of social bonds. Thus, the four discourses participate in the malaise of civilization. Unlike these, the discourse of the capitalist, in an attempt to eliminate the malaise, forecloses the social bond. As it promotes enjoyment rather than the renunciation of drive, the discourse of the capitalist eventually instigate it. And, as every drive is a death drive, the discourse of the capitalist produces nothing but the deadly thrust to enjoyment. The power the discourse of the capitalist acquired in contemporary society is analyzed from its close relationship with the discourse of science. From some statements of Hannah Arendt on the banality of evil present in a totalitarian system, such as the Nazi, there is the hypothesis that the alliance between the discourses of the capitalist, and science results in the emergence of a new form of totalitarianism: the totalitarianism of consumption.

Three-dimensional thermo-mechanical modeling of deformation at plate boundaries : case study San Andreas Fault System

Popov, Anton January 2008 (has links)
It has always been enigmatic which processes control the accretion of the North American terranes towards the Pacific plate and the landward migration of the San Andreas plate boundary. One of the theories suggests that the Pacific plate first cools and captures the uprising mantle in the slab window, and then it causes the accretion of the continental crustal blocks. The alternative theory attributes the accretion to the capture of Farallon plate fragments (microplates) stalled in the ceased Farallon-North America subduction zone. Quantitative judgement between these two end-member concepts requires a 3D thermomechanical numerical modeling. However, the software tool required for such modeling is not available at present in the geodynamic modeling community. The major aim of the presented work is comprised basically of two interconnected tasks. The first task is the development and testing of the research Finite Element code with sufficiently advanced facilities to perform the three-dimensional geological time scale simulations of lithospheric deformation. The second task consists in the application of the developed tool to the Neogene deformations of the crust and the mantle along the San Andreas Fault System in Central and northern California. The geological time scale modeling of lithospheric deformation poses numerous conceptual and implementation challenges for the software tools. Among them is the necessity to handle the brittle-ductile transition within the single computational domain, adequately represent the rock rheology in a broad range of temperatures and stresses, and resolve the extreme deformations of the free surface and internal boundaries. In the framework of this thesis the new Finite Element code (SLIM3D) has been successfully developed and tested. This code includes a coupled thermo-mechanical treatment of deformation processes and allows for an elasto-visco-plastic rheology with diffusion, dislocation and Peierls creep mechanisms and Mohr-Coulomb plasticity. The code incorporates an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation with free surface and Winkler boundary conditions. The modeling technique developed is used to study the aspects influencing the Neogene lithospheric deformation in central and northern California. The model setup is focused on the interaction between three major tectonic elements in the region: the North America plate, the Pacific plate and the Gorda plate, which join together near the Mendocino Triple Junction. Among the modeled effects is the influence of asthenosphere upwelling in the opening slab window on the overlying North American plate. The models also incorporate the captured microplate remnants in the fossil Farallon subduction zone, simplified subducting Gorda slab, and prominent crustal heterogeneity such as the Salinian block. The results show that heating of the mantle roots beneath the older fault zones and the transpression related to fault stepping, altogether, render cooling in the slab window alone incapable to explain eastward migration of the plate boundary. From the viewpoint of the thermomechanical modeling, the results confirm the geological concept, which assumes that a series of microplate capture events has been the primary reason of the inland migration of the San Andreas plate boundary over the recent 20 Ma. The remnants of the Farallon slab, stalled in the fossil subduction zone, create much stronger heterogeneity in the mantle than the cooling of the uprising asthenosphere, providing the more efficient and direct way for transferring the North American terranes to Pacific plate. The models demonstrate that a high effective friction coefficient on major faults fails to predict the distinct zones of strain localization in the brittle crust. The magnitude of friction coefficient inferred from the modeling is about 0.075, which is far less than typical values 0.6 – 0.8 obtained by variety of borehole stress measurements and laboratory data. Therefore, the model results presented in this thesis provide additional independent constrain which supports the “weak-fault” hypothesis in the long-term ongoing debate over the strength of major faults in the SAFS.

Seismic Imaging of the Alpine Fault at Whataroa, New Zealand

Lay, Vera 08 April 2021 (has links)
This thesis presents new insights into Alpine Fault structures at the drill site of the Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP)-2B at Whataroa in New Zealand. Despite the challenging conditions for seismic imaging within a glacial valley filled with sediments and steeply dipping valley flanks, several structures related to the valley itself as well as the tectonic fault system are imaged. The Alpine Fault at the West Coast in New Zealand is a major plate boundary forming a significant geohazard as large earthquakes (magnitude 7-8) occur regularly and the next earthquake is expected relatively soon. A major effort has been made to study the fault characteristics through scientific drilling in the Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP) Alpine Fault with the deepest DFDP-2B borehole located in the Whataroa Valley. A great variety of seismic data are newly acquired. First, the WhataDUSIE (Whataroa Detailed University Seismic Imaging Experiment) data set is a ~5 km long 2D profile acquired in 2011 prior to the drilling. As the 2D profile could not fully explain the 3D structures in the Whataroa Valley, an extended surface and borehole data set was acquired in 2016 after the drilling. This data set consists of shorter 2D lines (< 3 km), a dense 3D-array, and vertical seismic profiling (VSP) using the DFDP-2B borehole including the fibre-optic cable. 3D seismic data proved to be essential to understand the complex 3D structures of the glacial valley and the major fault. First-arrival travel time tomography and prestack depth migration (PSDM) are applied to obtain a P-wave velocity model and seismic images of the subsurface (<5 km). In this complex setting, the Fresnel volume migration (a focusing PSDM method) proved to best obtain structural information about the subsurface. Analysing the results of the seismic data processing, two major outcomes are achieved: improved knowledge about the glacial structures of the Whataroa Valley and structural images of the Alpine Fault zone. The Whataroa Valley is an overdeepened glacial valley with details of the basement topography visible in the seismic images. A deep trough is identified south of the DFDP-2B borehole with horizontal layering of the sediments. Valley flanks are identified in both the seismic images and the P-wave velocity model, particularly the western valley flank. Thus, Quaternary and glacial processes can be analysed with the help of the newly derived seismic images. The Alpine Fault is directly imaged with the seismic data, which is the first time in this region at shallow depths (<5 km). Several shorter fault segments between depths of 0.2 km and 2.2 km dipping 40-56° to the southeast are directly imaged. Further identified reflectors and faults are interpreted to represent Alpine Fault structures in the form of a damage zone and induced faults adding further complexity to the fault zone. In conclusion, the 3D seismic results presented in this thesis provide new insights into the Whataroa subsurface. Hence, the new results form a good basis for a deeper understanding of the Alpine Fault structures and underlying processes which is important for potential future drilling but also for the estimation of the geohazard in the region.
