Environmental and experiential determinants of human allocentric and egocentric navigation systems

Lee, Sharon 22 November 2012 (has links)
The research program described in this dissertation updates the knowledge base concerning human navigation and presents new methods for investigating selection and use of cognitive navigational strategies. Four experiments were designed to answer questions about the effects of environmental and experiential factors on cognitive mapping and selection of navigation strategies. Humans are thought to navigate using two different reference frames often referred to as “world based” and “person based”. These reference frames correspond to two probable cognitive/memory systems respectively labelled “allocentric” for the formation and use of cognitive maps of the environment, and “egocentric” for navigation by stimulus response or guidance. Different navigational strategies are associated with the two systems. Allocentric strategies rely on the presence of a stable environmental structure containing a number of more distal, relational stimuli whereas egocentric strategies rely only on the presence of simple, local cues (cue-based egocentric) or on body movements (response-based egocentric). The experiments tested navigation behaviour and strategy selection using virtual environment analogues of an animal model, the Morris water maze. Adaptations included, 1) the Place maze biasing participants toward the use of an allocentric strategy, 2) the Cue maze (and Floor Cue maze) biasing participants toward the use of an egocentric strategy, and 3) the Dual-strategy maze that has no bias because participants can choose to utilize either an allocentric or egocentric strategy. Experiment 1 was a behavioural study testing 101 university students in the Place maze and Floor Cue maze, with and without the opportunity to explore the environment before testing. The experiment showed for the first time that exploration is necessary for allocentric but not for egocentric navigation, suggesting that prior exploration is important for cognitive mapping. Experiment 2 outlined a novel and reliable eye tracking method for differentiating strategy use in the Place and Cue mazes. Eye movements were measured during the first orientation second of behavioural trials to differentiate allocentric from egocentric strategy use. Experiment 3 employed the established eye tracking method to test the effects of experience on strategy selection. Participants were trained in either the Place maze or the Cue maze and then tested in the Dual-strategy maze. A strategy probe trial was introduced at the end of testing to indicate whether participants had selected an allocentric or an egocentric strategy. Training experience had a strong behavioural effect on later strategy selection at the end of testing. Furthermore the effect of experience occurred independently of the gender of participants. However, the experience effect was only briefly shown using eye tracking measures. Experiment 4 was a successful feasibility study showing that eye tracking measures can be utilized to measure navigational strategy use in survivors of traumatic brain injury. Together these experiments may indicate that strategies are not innate or within the person but rather are interactions of the person with the environment. / Graduate

Design and Development of a Framework to Bridge the Gap Between Real and Virtual

Hossain, SK Alamgir 01 November 2011 (has links)
Several researchers have successfully developed realistic models of real world objects/ phenomena and then have simulated them in the virtual world. In this thesis, we propose the opposite: instantiating virtual world events in the real world. The interactive 3D virtual environment provides a useful, realistic 3D world that resembles objects/phenomena of a real world, but it has limited capability to communicate with the physical environment. We argue that new and intuitive 3D user interfaces, such as 3D virtual environment interfaces, may provide an alternative form of media for communicating with the real environment. We propose a 3D virtual world-based add-on architecture that achieves a synchronized virtual-real communication. In this framework, we explored the possibilities of integrating haptic and real world object interactions with Linden Lab's multiuser online 3D virtual world, Second Life. We enhanced the open source Second Life viewer client in order to facilitate communications between the real and virtual world. Moreover, we analyzed the suitability of such an approach in terms of user perception, intuition and other common parameters. Our experiments suggest that the proposed approach not only demonstrates a more intuitive mode of communication system, but also is appealing and useful to the user. Some of the potential applications of the proposed approach include remote child-care, communication between distant lovers, stress recovery, and home automation.

Realizing the Interactive Speech Interface in a Multi-user Virtual Environment

Liao , Chun-Feng Unknown Date (has links)
The applications of 3D virtual environments and voice user interface (VUI) on personal computers have received significant attentions in recent years. Since speech is the most natural way of communication, incorporating VUI into virtual environments can enhance user interaction and immersiveness. Although there have been many researches addressing the issue of integrating VUI and 3D virtual environment, most of the proposed solutions do not provide an effective mechanism for multi-user dialog management. The objective of this research is on providing a solution for VUI integration and dialog management and realizing such a mechanism in a multi-user virtual environment. We have designed a dialog scripting language called XAML-V (eXtensible Animation Markup Language – Voice Extension), based on the VoiceXML standard, to address the issues of synchronization between VUI and animation and dialog management for multi-user interaction. We have also implemented such a language and realized it on a multi-user virtual environment to evaluate the effectiveness of this design.

Hannel, Kelly January 2017 (has links)
The use of information and communication technologies made undeniable advances in education. However, advances towards personalized learning and directed to the preferences, the leveling (improvement of difficulties and prerequisites) and to the interests of students are small yet. Thus, it is intended, by identifying the students' prior knowledge and content (conceptual) to improve the process so that each student reach, at their mode (personalized) the learning and make progress in discipline/year in question. We know that is humanly impossible for a teacher to know the characteristics and difficulties of content of all his students. So, the virtual environment that supports the teacher should have the flexibility to customize interactions with each student, which allows the student to interact at his/her own study pace, access the necessary content or deepen in some content that he/she has mastered. This thesis proposes a method for using the available virtual environments tools, especially the MOODLE, to achieve the personalization of teaching and to lead the student in his own individual trajectory toward meaningful learning, healing content difficulties. Following the objective of improving the quality of education without the need for large investment in environmental development or financial contribution. To validate the method was carried out a pilot project plus two experiments, all occurred at Military College of Porto Alegre, with a total of 256 students. The results showed the viability of the method, measured by the improvement in grades (quantitative analysis) and the qualitative analysis of data and questionnaires (answered by students and teachers). It is highlighted as an educational advantage, the development of the method that can be applied to any discipline or teaching model and as computational advantage, the use of MOODLE to customize teaching.

Menegotto, Daniela Brun January 2015 (has links)
This thesis has as its central theme the teaching practices in Virtual Environment of Learning – VEL. It investigates the changes that are being produced in the teaching activities and evidenced in the records of online teaching practices in VEL. The research occurs based on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks proposed by Piaget’s Genetic Epistemology. Part of a case study of teaching practices online, a technical course is developed in VEL MOODLE. It chooses as data evidence the online written records of the educational organizations, developed in different semesters by the teacher, and the semi-structured interviews and inspired in some features of Piaget’s clinical method. However, one notes the difficulty of most students understand this concept; stands out, also, the difficulty of students to interpret a function by analyzing its graph in the Cartesian plane xOy. In this context, this thesis try alternative methods that can contribute to the improvement of teaching and learning theme in question. More precisely, it uses Geogebra educational software and the virtual environment Moodle learning for the study of elementary functions. In general, the resources of Geogebra, the Dynamic Geometry and Algebra, have to propitiate to student understands, the proper form, the ratings and the function representation as a curve in the plane; Furthermore, Geogebra allow guesses about the behavior of an elementary function parameters subject to variation. In turn, the use of Moodle environment allows communication and broader evaluation (between teacher-student and student-student) through, questionnaires / online tests, video lessons, discussion forums etc. This text is six classes developed with the participation of two groups (each with about 35 students) of the third year of high school. Initially, in order to detect major and several difficulties, an evaluation (presence) was made with basic issues (of different levels). The performance of these students was quantified, qualified (enjoying the most problematic conceptual topics) and then served as support for the activities - in order to reverse the reality presented and the existing student-mathematical relationship. It is noteworthy that the use of an educational software like GeoGebra already proposes a new dynamic student-teacher-mathematics. Wanted with this change that the student take a more active position on the mathematical content so that, in fact, with proper guidance of the teacher, can understand and demystify the concept of real function of a real variable.

No. of bitstreams: 1 CarlaCF_DISSERT.pdf: 4902610 bytes, checksum: 638d1ba0be0bc0683b14370711f79fe1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-01-30 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico / We propose a robotics simulation platform, named S-Educ, developed specifically for application in educational robotics, which can be used as an alternative or in association with robotics kits in classes involving the use of robotics. In the usually known approach, educational robotics uses robotics kits for classes which generally include interdisciplinary themes. The idea of this work is not to replace these kits, but to use the developed simulator as an alternative, where, for some reason, the traditional kits cannot be used, or even to use the platform in association with these kits. To develop the simulator, initially, we conducted research in the literature on the use of robotic simulators and robotic kits, facing the education sector, from which it was possible to define a set of features considered important for creating such a tool. Then, on the software development phase, the simulator S-Educ was implemented, taking into account the requirements and features defined in the design phase. Finally, to validate the platform, several tests were conducted with teachers, students and lay adults, in which it was used the simulator S-Educ, to evaluate its use in educational robotics classes. The results show that robotic simulator allows a reduction of financial costs, facilitate testing and reduce robot damage inherent to its use, in addition to other advantages.
