Consonance, Tertian Structures and Tonal Coherence in Wladimir Vogel's Dodecaphonic World

Hale, Jacquelyn 12 1900 (has links)
Wladimir Vogel's (1896-1984) interest in twelve-tone composition began to develop in 1936 after hearing a series of lectures by Willi Reich, a music critic and supporter of the new music of the Second Viennese School. The transition for Vogel from a large-scale orchestral “classical” style, influenced by his study with Ferruccio Busoni in Berlin in the early 1920s, to a new technique involving dodecaphony is apparent in his instrumental writing, the third and fourth movements of the Konzert für Violine und Orchester (1937), as well as in his vocal writing, the Madrigaux for mixed a cappella choir (1938/39). Vogel's twelve-tone works exhibit tertian structures which are particularly emphasized by triads located as consecutive pitches within the rows. Emphasis on tertian structures are not limited to small-scale segmentation of the rows but can also be seen in the structural and tonal organization of complete movements and works. A primary example is the Konzert für Violoncello und Orchester (Cello Concerto) (1955) in which, on a smaller scale, the presentation of the row emphasizes both diminished and minor triads, and at the macro level, the structural triadic relationships unify passages within individual movements as well as the concerto as a whole. Since the work is composed using the twelve-tone method, consideration is given to the structure of the serial components. In addition, the concerto is analyzed in terms of its cognitive features-those elements that are demonstrably related to traditional practice- such as tertian melodic/harmonic outlines reinforced by rhythmic features that are common to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century practice. The compositional features evident from the serial structure of the work are addressed in conjunction with references to traditional practice made evident through the serial technique. The findings in the analysis of the Cello Concerto support the argument that the inclusion of consonant sonorities and tertian structures in Vogel's works results in a certain degree of tonal coherence while the large-scale compositional framework is dodecaphonic.

Love on the Stage, War on the Page: Evaluating the Role of War Trauma in How I Learned to Drive

Hull, Deborah 07 May 2016 (has links)
Psychological traumas surface in Paula Vogel’s portrayal of Li’l Bit and Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive (1997). Theorizing Peck’s fixation on Li’l Bit is necessitated by his drive to recapture his innocence—an innocence he lost as a young man during WWII—this thesis will seek to explain how Drive can be viewed as a love story by revealing the motivations behind Li’l Bit’s sympathy for Uncle Peck. Recognizing war trauma as the fundamental catalyst for both the action and the tone of the play situates Drive in a territory not yet explored. Furthermore, this thesis will explore the dubious relationship between war-traumatized veterans and pedophilic tendencies by examining this theme in other literature, particularly, J.D. Salinger’s “For Esmé—with Love and Squalor” (1950) and Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita (1955), thus, placing Drive at the nexus in which American drama and war literature coalesce.

The Nether Worlds of Jennifer Haley — A Case Study of Virtuality Theatre

Yeadon, Michelle 06 September 2018 (has links)
Studies exploring the first wave of digital performance foregrounded technology by cataloging experimentation and novel interactions between liveness, projections and code. As exercises in medium, these high tech spectacles demonstrate the aesthetic potential of digital media while introducing key media concepts. Jennifer Haley is a writer with one foot in theatre and one in code. She is uniquely positioned in two interdependent spheres, which makes her particularly suited to engineer a theatrical bridge into the virtual, because at the heart of the contemporary technological revolution is a new level of writing and media literacy. Theatre has been effectively accessing the virtual imagination for millennia, and new technologies create new intricacies for engaging the virtual within theatrical space. Each is a medium defined by action, which host other media, and provide in depth simulations. Haley’s plays push beyond the fascination and spectacle of technology to incorporate the mundane reality of the digital into the structure of her work. Haley writes plays specifically to resonate with the similarities she sees between theatre and virtual worlds. Utilizing techniques and tropes from other media and then framing the narrative from within a theatrical world Haley exploits the essence of an active, critical audience and opens a dialog between virtual worlds and the perceptions of the audience. She treats her media generated worlds as places. Other digital theatre plays may peer through a window into the virtual by dramatizing a conversation through media; Haley sends an expedition over the threshold into another world. A flesh version of an avatar breathing before the audience establishes a material existence unattainable in two dimensional screen media. Haley illuminates the constructed nature of mediatized communication, but she does it dramaturgically deemphasizing the technology and re-centering the human within the virtual drama. Her approach builds a metaphorical bridge between theatre and virtual digital realities. Through a close reading of Haley’s plays I will demonstrate how Haley takes the artistic next step for computer technology and theatre.

Pees, Kathrin 04 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Playful Conversations: A Study of Shared Dynamics Between the Plays of Paula Vogel and Sarah Ruhl / Study of Shared Dynamics Between the Plays of Paula Vogel and Sarah Ruhl

Petersen, Jeffrey J., 1981- 12 1900 (has links)
vii, 130 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel, playwright and educator, has blazed a trail in American theatre, opening new avenues for female playwrights. In 2005 Vogel's student Sarah Ruhl burst onto the scene with her play The Clean House. As one of the most produced playwrights of 2005, Ruhl has been celebrated as the new voice of American theatre. There are similarities, as might be expected between teacher and former student, but some of the similarities suggest something more: a dynamic shared between Vogel's and Ruhl's plays which suggests an ongoing theatrical conversation and may suggest directions for future American drama. / Committee in Charge: Dr. John Schmor, Chair; Dr. Jennifer Schlueter

Lucien Vogel et Michel de Brunhoff : parcours croisés de deux éditeurs de presse illustrée au XXe siècle / Lucien Vogel and Michel de Brunhoff : crossed career paths of two illustrated press publishers in the 20th century

Kurkdjian, Sophie 05 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis recounts the crossed career paths of two publishers : Lucien Vogel (1886-1954) and Michel de Brunhoff (1892-1958). After La Gazette du bon ton launched in 1912, the two brothers-in-law published French Vogue and Le Jardin des modes in 1920. These three journals, which give a major role to the illustration, contribute to radically modernize women's magazines. The editorial career of Vogel and de Brunhoff, centered around women's magazines, art press (Feuillets d'Art, Arts et métiers graphiques) and fashion is similar to the late 1920s before diverging in 1928 when Vogel founded the photography magazine Vu. From this period, while Brunhoff remains committed to achieving fashion magazines, Vogel is committed towards politics, defending with Le Petit Journal, Marianne and Messidor, leftist ideas and a pronounced anti-fascism. To understand the general career of Lucien Vogel and Michel de Brunhoff while understanding its singularities - their role in the renewal of women's magazines, their interest in technical issues related to the illustration and the choices made by Vogel in 1930 - this thesis study is based on a chronological and compared work. Largely biographical, to highlight the personality and career of Vogel and de Brunhoff from their profession al beginnings to the end of their career, this reflection has also to be taken as a more general contribution to cultural history, to illustrated press history, and to the history of women's magazines of beginning of the twentieth century in which both publishers have left an image of groundbreaking and aesthetes publishers.

Inflow Performance Relationships (IPR) for Solution Gas Drive Reservoirs -- a Semi-Analytical Approach

Nass, Maria A. 2010 May 1900 (has links)
This work provides a semi-analytical development of the pressure-mobility behavior of solution gas-drive reservoir systems producing below the bubble point pressure. Our primary result is the "characteristic" relation which relates normalized (or dimensionless) pressure and mobility functions. This formulation is proven with an exhaustive numerical simulation study consisting of over 900 different cases. We considered 9 different pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) sets, and 13 different relative permeability cases in the simulation study. We also utilized 7 different depletion scenarios. The secondary purpose of this work was to develop a correlation of the "characteristic parameter" as a function of rock and fluid properties evaluated at initial reservoir conditions such as: API density, GOR, formation volume factor, viscosity, reservoir pressure, reservoir temperature, oil saturation, relative permeability end points, corey exponents and oil mobility: We did successfully correlate the characteristic parameter as a function of these variables, which proves that we can uniquely represent the pressure-mobility path during depletion with specific reservoir and fluid property variables, taken as constant values for a particular case. The functional form of our correlation along with all relevant equations are shown on the body of this document.

The increase in [CO 2 ] in the atmosphere from climate change can lead to changes in the composition of communities and the structure and functioning of ecosystems. Due to the impact of biological invasions in the Cerrado, comparisons involving functional characteristics of exotic and native species contribute to a better understanding of the competitive relationships between these species. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the morphological, physiological and growth responses of two species from Cerrado, a native herbaceous C 3 (Stylosantes capitata Vogel.) and an invasive herbaceous C 4 (Melinis minutiflora P. Beauv.). The experiment was conducted in CTA located at UFV, Campus Florestal. Plants of both species grown alone and in competition, under low (350 ppm) and high [CO 2 ] (1000 ppm) for a period of 270 days. Analysis of gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, growth and biomass production were performed when plants were 210, 270, 330 and 390 days old. Stylosanthes capitata and M. minutiflora showed higher A máx in high [CO 2 ] in winter, demonstrating that the elevation of [CO 2 ] stimulates the photosynthesis of the two functional groups even under low temperature conditions. S. capitata showed no decrease in photochemical capacity, unlike M. minutiflora, which showed a reduction over time of F v /F m and NPQ. Melinis minutiflora maintained the pattern of growth over time. However, S. capitata growing alone and in low [CO 2 ], invested in the production of leaves, increasing its capacity of capture of light. The high allocation of biomass to root (MSR) under conditions of high [CO 2 ] favored S. capitata in the competition for resources with M. minutiflora. Melinis minutiflora presented higher biomass production when grown alone than in competition, which shows that competition with S. capitata impaired production of MSC, MSF and MST. Although C 4 alien species are initially better at colonization of invaded areas, native Cerrado C 3 species may adjust morphophysiological traits when growing at high [CO 2 ] and develop strategies that confer advantages on resource competition.
